(S3) Hacking

The Next Generation of Hacking

Fortresses of code may becoming the most important defenses of a country.

As the world begins to be controlled by the algorithms of computers, everything from phones, pipelines, and power stations could possibly fall prey to a new type of hacking that has emerged; cyber-physical hacking.

1. Based on what you read from selecting at least two of the six article links above, what problems can you foresee with cyber-physical hacking in the future? (Identify the link numbers you chose and what you got from them)

2. Do you believe that hacking will become the next frontier for wars? If so, how? If not, why?

3. What did you take away from the presentation by Dan Petro?

4. So overall, how does the whole topic of hacking affect you personally?

31 comments:

  1. 1. I used the first and fourth links given, and from both of these, I can only see hacking becoming bigger and more widespread as technology becomes a bigger and bigger part of our daily lives. With the points from both articles taken into consideration, absolutely anyone can hack into a large company with a little bit of research.

    2. No, only because it already is (for the most part) a part of normal warfare. Take the virus agent.btz for example; some Afghanistan terrorists find a flash drive in a parking lot, use it to connect to the Pentagon, and input the virus, which beamed over and ruined precious information from our nation's defense hub, and a crack team of white-hats had to work around the clock for at least 14 months to track it down and finally destroy it.

    3. Hacking isn't nearly as complicated as the movies make it look; it's actually relatively easy to do, and it can have very devastating effects.

    4. It affects me the same way it affects anyone with any technology in their lives -- hackers can break in, steal vital information, and generally ruin any virtual safety that you thought you had.

  2. 1. Using the fourth and sixth link, I discovered that hacking isn’t as hard as it’s seen to be, and could be done by almost anyone. It was also stated that hackers can attack on people using public Wi-Fi to raid for personal data. A Cyber security bill was also announced to give the government access to the American citizen’s private information.

    2. As of now hacking is already used for warfare, but I believe in the near future it will be used more often, as the Internet is a source used by almost everyone. By hacking, people are able to steal private information that could be used against an enemy.

    3. I thought it was amazing that a company could exist that was basically made up of hackers, that actually help companies, rather than traumatize them. All the time you see movies portray hackers as nerdy-looking people who know how to type really fast on a keyboard, but that’s not always true.

    4. For those who hack for good, I’m grateful, otherwise I’d much rather not have my information stolen from a hacker.

  3. 1.I use number four and a 7 year old girl knows who knows how to hack so its to look easy that little kids know how to hack. I used number 6 that the Cybersecurity bill poses more serious threats on our privacy.

    2. I really don' see a hacking war starting. Hacking is just people do to on their own time like robbing banks and other hacking.

3.I like how he calls people or people call him and ask to hack into their own company to see and how to protect their company from getting hack. I also like the hacking into the Coca-Cola machine.

    4. It affects my life like, people can hack into your phone and personal e-mails. Also hack into game system, my friends Xbox live has hack a couple of weeks ago .

    ReplyDelete
  4. 1.) I see that hackers can change the way they work, and there's almost always a loophole you could go through to get into security. Once hackers are in, they reveal the hole and the workers patch it. Then, the hackers find another loophole, and it starts all over again.

2.) The hackers are a part of war but I don't think it could start wars because hacking is only for getting information or making things the way you want it to be. I don't think that could start a war.

3.) I learned that the coca-cola machines are awesome! And also hacking is an art and that you have to think outside the box.

4.) I think it's awesome unless people hack for the wrong reasons. It's like a super power, you've got that power, but you need to learn how to control it and use it for the right reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  5. 1. Based on articles 1 and 4, I see that hacking can seriously invade privacy and confidential information. In addition, almost anyone can hack, such as the 7-year old girl from article 4. Hacking is going to lead to blackmail, identity theft, and other major crimes.

    2. I believe that hacking is going to be involved for war. Hacking can access launch codes, breach security, and shut down technology.

    3. Dan Petro was AWESOME! He sees life in a different perspective, and willingly shares experience as a professional. I would like to see him again.

    4. The topic of hacking is overall looking negative. On one hand, hacking just bends rules that nobody wants to follow. On the other hand, hacking can be used for crime. There aren't many benefits of hacking.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 1.

    2. I believe that hacking will become the next form of warfare instead of sending troops. Cyber warfare can cause a lot more damage than regular warfare. Cyber warfare can cause things like the leaking of critical government information, electronic devices we use every day malfunctioning, and crippling computer viruses.

    3. Hacking is not as glamorous as movies and TV make it out to be. Hacking is a game that you can't lose and always need to win.

    4. I have been hacked before, not just on social networking apps, like Steam, but my entire computer system being compromised. While I do not like hacking nor do I want to learn, I do have a new appreciation for the art of hacking.

    1. 1. Links 1 and 5 worry me about hacking in the future. We may be faced with global cyber threats that are untraceable to even the most elite of cyber security. Someone could set up their laptop in a cafe in North Africa and be able to launch nuclear missiles. It might sound ridiculous, but that might become a reality in the future.

      Delete
  7. 1.

2.Cyber terrorism is a very real threat. North Korea recently hacked us, and they caused many problems. Any device that has a source of wifi is as stake. Cyber warfare is going to be an international attack.

    3. Hacking isn't as easy mode as movies make it to be. You always have to win, you can't lose.

    4. Hacking is really cool only for ethical reasons and when it's used for good.

    ReplyDelete

    1. 1. The first and fourth links have some merit to them and worry me a somewhat. If a child can hack, then that poses a problem for the U.S. and the population as a whole. Also if some utilities are able to be hacked into, then that is a way of cyber terrorism to become much more apparent.

      Delete
  8. 1. I got my ideas from briefly reading all the links. Computer hackers are unauthorized users who break into computer systems in order to steal, change or destroy information, often by installing dangerous malware without your knowledge or consent. Their clever tactics and detailed technical knowledge help them access information you really don’t want them to have.

    2. i think that hacking will not be an active complete war. considering that it is already used in wars and everyday life

    3. i learned that hacking is just a big game. and the hackers win most of the time. The majority of people make hacking information very easy with most of there scams and other traps that pull ignorant people to giving them personal information.

    4. having personal information stollen by hacking is definitely scary but is easily avoidable considering the simple steps that can be taken. like protecting your phones and computers etc.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1.The links i chose were 1 and 6 since they looked over the u.s take on cyber security and the steps they are taking to ensure our safety. They also shine on how destructive it can be
2.It will be implemented into warfare but NO war will ever be won without boots on the ground and planes in the sky.
3.That hacking is a game and that if you don't know you are playing, your out of luck and theres nothing you can do about it
4.I have never been hacked but if i do,my life will be in shambles

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. I chose links 3 and 6, link 3 worries me because if hacking can be justified it may have people making excuses just so they can see your personal information, and link 6 worries me because I don't want the government snooping in personal information, I'd prefer if they offered more ways to protect our info but they might just use that to peek at our info anyways.

    2. I believe hacking will be used in wars, it could be used to find out crucial information that could give us an upper hand in battle.

    3.

    4. All this talk about hacking unsettles me, anyone could be watching, seeing what your doing, all your contacts, everything about you someone else could use for their own desires.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1.From the third and fourth links i earned that if a person is trained enough hacking can be extremly easy for them especially for hacker groups.but there are hacker groups who are hired to show weakpoints and help reinforce them.
2.Hacking could lead to warfare one country could completly shut down another. And if drones with networks are introduced they can be hacked and turned on the enemy.
3.That hacking can be a good a very profitable thing. Also that you can have fun doing it.And create neat little gadgets to help you.
4.I find it cool and intresting.I wouldnt mind being able to do it for a company and make profit.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1. I used the fourth and first, from these two links I gathered that with not a massive amount of effort anyone can hack into just about anything as long as you can get to it. Their has even been a 7 year old girl, stated in article 4, who can hack with all these people being able to do basically do anything as long as they can find a loophole because there is almost always a loophole.

    2. I think that hacking will be the frontier for war in the future because if you are able to hack into top secret files about undercover agents for example you can wipe them out destroying the intel of the enemy. You could also find out about were all the top secret weapons are and the intel on the places were they are kept and many other things, which obviously can change the tide of war.

    3. I took that movies suck at portraying hacking and that it can be used for good not just bad also I learned how to hack a old time Coke machine.

    4. I find the topic to be indifferent because people can use it for extremely bad things or to help people so I don't really know yet. I would however love to know how to do this skill just-incase I could need it for a job.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. The First and Fourth,People can start using hacking to blackmail/holding ransom power plants and other valuable resources that we need. Also wifi in the future could be hacked with technological advances. Even now free wifi spots are being hacked, but it can be made worse as technology evolves.

    2. Personally I thought it already was part of it. I can advance over the years and be stronger in usage, but it's already here somewhat.

    3. That hacking can be used for good ways and in the good ways it changes what people think about hacking. And Coke Machines have menus that can be accessed and possible drop coins and change how much soda costs.

    4. Hacking affects everyone that is in or uses technology.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1) Some problems i see in the future is that the new wave of technology that includes more house hold and car technology could be your problem. For example, if you have a program that can control your house then a hacker could possibly take control of your house. With a car that can drive itself a hacker could take it off the road.

    2) As more technology is being used by the military a hacker could shut down servers for enemy technology leaving them blind to their surroundings.

    3) Dan Petro taught me a lot about hacking. He dismissed the myths about movie hacking and we learned some interesting facts about coke machines.

    4) Hacking can affect anyone. If you are not secure online you expose yourself to hacking. The only way to be safe from hacking is to not use technology at all.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. (3 and 5) I learned threw these that hacking is becoming a big problem even sometimes white hat hackers doing it wrong. I do see problems with hackers getting out of control and getting deep into systems.
2.There might be a war using hacking because it seems like it is the best way to attack someone without loosing troops and risking nuclear weapons.
3.That hacking is the best way to fight hacking because hacking can close security holes.
4.Not to much I just have to make sure I don't get hacked.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1.) One potential problem might be that hacking is becoming more popular, and people are finding ways to “justify” it, as seen in the 3rd link. Another problem is the fact that children are able to hack into things, as the 4th link describes, because that just shows that even someone with little experience can hack into something, it can be imaginable what an experienced person can do.
2.) It is highly possible that hacking will become a new front for future wars, as it allows one side to damage the other side with a lot more ease and a lot less casualties than normal means of warfare.
3.) One thing would be that there are a lot of ways that are possible to hack into something, even in older times when technology isn’t as sophisticated as it is today.
4.) I think hacking is an intriguing subject, because of how much it can vary, although I’m not too sure how much it would actually affect me personally.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. (1 and 6) What worries me is that the government is trying to pass a bill that would allow themto look at anyone's personal info by asking companies for "voluntary" cooperation in sharing their info, including their employees communications, for cybersecurity purposes (link 6). And then in link 1with how technology keeps advancing, hackers will be able hack into public utilities, if no most things, and use that to get them whatever they want.
    2. I believe that hacking can become the next frontier for wars because of how it keeps advancing. There would be less casualties and one side could hurt the other without too much trouble.
    3. Hacking is one big game that isn't as easy as the movies make it out to be. When playing this game you have to win because you can only lose once.
    4. I find hacking a very interesting topic that I would like to look into further because it's very intriguing. I think it would be something cool to do as a living, as long as you use it the right way.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. I chose Utilities at Risk for Cyber Attacks and Debatewise: Hacking Can be Justified, or links one and three. In the near future, most of the world will be run by devices that can be hacked into. Whether its military computers, electrical grids, or organ transplants, almost anything is hackable. With clever minds behind the code, anything is possible. Holding entire cities for ransom isn't too far out of the picture, although its unlikely. Hacking major companies or businesses can even be justified depending on the outcome of the disruption. It may lead to a better security system in the target system. Whether its justified or not, people are able to hack into just about anything that has a poor security system.

    2. Hacking won't necessarily become the main part of wars, but it could become a larger part of it. Nearly every military across the globe is computerized. With just a small security breach, anything can happen. With the deadly power being accessible to hackers, more people have been hired to hack into the systems in tests of its security, and then fortify it. As time progresses, the systems are becoming harder and harder to break, resulting in an extremely secure system.

    3. The presentation Dan Petro gave shed light onto the hidden aspects of hacking that aren't normally given credit. Social hacking can be basic enough as asking someone about a critical part of security, such as a password. Out of all the people that use a site, at least one will give away their password, and that's all it takes to get into the system. Another key part of his presentation was that hacking isn't always what it seems compared to the media. The media rarely gets any information on hacking correct, and usually blows it out of proportion. The form of hacking most of the population knows is over exaggerated, when really it is just innovative minds finding clever ways to accomplish their goals.

    4. Hacking is an intriguing subject. When given a task that is seemingly impossible, innovative minds find a way to overcome the obstacles and persevere to whatever they have their minds set on accomplishing. Hacking may seem as a purely computerized subject to the majority of the population, but in reality correlates into every part of their daily lives. Hacking is just another word for innovation, and deserves more recognition across the globe.

  19. My main worry comes straight from link number one. My dad has always talked to me about what would happen if our power grid was hacked or went down. Personally I'd be helpless. Physically causing mayhem. I think this is a big problem here. There is no way of stopping it though. Its like the evil villain in the movies. He gets the power and wants to use it in bad ways. So person with bad intension could use the hacking ability, for no good. This is why we need the justified "white hat hacker" to make our fire walls and virtual security safe. Making it impossible to hack our power grid or anything. There is good and bad.
2.) It all depends in the battle. If we get to a war that is all drones and technology then absolutely. I can see a war on a tech scale. Just not very soon. Honestly I don't know how I feel about that. The mass number of people affected in that way. Its scary to think about that.
    3) Dan taught me that it is a rewarding job being a hacker. He learns and grows in his knowledge of tech and how to help company's keep there fire walls strong. He just a normal guy you know. Hackers aren't strange evil guys. Hacking actually seem very interesting. I really enjoyed his presentation.
    4) In the end all I can say is hacking well affect my life in some shape or form. It well be more and more present as I grow. Mainly it well either be an advantage, or our demise.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1.) Something that i'm not leaning towards is the fact that the government is trying to pass a bill that will allow them to pretty much look at anything we are doing (Link Six). Also from link number one, technology will ALWAYS be advancing and is giving hackers more things they can test on and possibly hack into whether it be big or small it can lead to something bad.
2.)Yes, we include technology into everything and people tend to want to win a war so being ahead in a technological state will help so i think we are going to incorporate this new technology into war.
3.)Dan showed me that although people think hacking is cheating that it really isnt. It is just a bend in the system where you get results that you did not expect.
4.)The whole topic on hacking is interesting. It shows all the hidden possibilities and flaws that not a normal person would see. It may help later in life but right now i dont see it being a major thing for me.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1) I believe many issues would happen other be able to get information that you don't want anyone to know
    2) Yes depending on what the country hacked I believe another country would respond by either hacking them or declare war on that country for snooping around where they shouldn't of been.
    3) Ive learned how to hack a coca cola machine which I have not tried out yet but will in the near future
    4) It will affect all of out lives eventually it will get bigger and many others will do it just for fun

  22. 1. I feel like a massive tragedy will happen to like a huge cluster of companies in one big event where a team of hackers break in and just go buckwild taking information, implementing viruses, and stealing identities just because too many companies aren’t being careful with their security. It’s these kind of 9-11-ish events that make people freak out and be super careful about that particular area.
    2. It would make sense for an organization like ISIS to put together some trick to access U.S. nuclear warfare using ninjas and cyber-ninjas.
    3. Dan Petro’s presentation was awesome because I now understand what hacking is all about. I always thought that hacking was something that was filled with crazy concepts that go way over my head but it actually uses a lot of simple tricks and lies.
    4. Now I know what kind of information to be careful with. I don’t plan on taking a career in cyber security, but I might become proficient enough in my studies to be able to find some bug bounties.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. Links 3 and 5. There will always be bad people to hack for evil, and pointing fingers at people who hack to combat the bad hackers is just plain stupid. The explosion could have been prevented if the proper security was in place, and sometimes hacking to confirm the identity of a possible terrorist is necessary.
    2. I believe hacking is already involved in warfare, cyber-warfare. There have been countless attempts to hack our highest levels of security, we need all the help we can get.

3.I was absent when Dan Petro was here.
    4. Theres alsways a risk of someone hacking me, but I would rather know a few things about hacking to properly defend myself and to stay secure than be a vulnerable target for hackers and government agencies.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1.) I feel hackers are annoying overall with cheating in games, shutting down websites, and changing settings, but the real threat lies in important info getting stolen. Huge companies are a huge target by hackers, and that makes them for vulnerable. That means there are more and more people trying to get into their webbase and trying to steal information. This is dangerous for employees, and they could start losing trust in the companies' ability to keep their secrets safe.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1.) I used links one and five and what I got out of it is that the more technology evolves the more hacking will become a day to day thing because we cant keep us with making security programs as hacker keep hacking them. Things like nuclear launch codes could be stolen at some home in a different country because as long as you have the skills nothing can stop you.

2.) I do because even right now we are so reliant on technology that it could already cripple our military and throw our country into chaos and that could be a serious issue if it were to happen.

3.) Hacking is something that requires time and patience to accomplish in the long run. And that hacking isn't as simple as it in the movies and is a career that require a large amount of skill to preform.

4.) I have never really been in fear of hacking because I have always been careful on the internet so it really doesn't effect me as much as most people.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. Using the fourth and sixth link, I have noticed that hacking can be done by anyone and is not as hard as it is seen in many movies today.

    2. I do because I think hacking is a game changer when it comes to a war, people could easily use this to find out info from the enemy or find out what and where they are planning something. many things can be considered when it comes to hacking and wars, the most important being information on certain events or ideas of the enemy.

    3. Hacking is 100 percent not as complicated as the movies look, which is really disapointing because growing up I thought hacking was the coolest thing because of how hard it was, but in the end it was interesting to find out many new things about hacking.

    4. I feel just like everyone else does, it's nice to have hackers out there that are doing what they do for the good, but in the end, I would not want anyone to steal my personal information at any time of any day.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. I got my info from the fourth and sixth along with some side research. Hacking shows to quite easy and anyone can get online and teach themselves how to do it.

    2. I believe that hacking is going to be the next gen spies. It will cause wars and end them. Hacking has already been done and North Korea is blamed. We are already seeing that hacking and getting caught is starting conflict between countries along with ISIS.

    3. Dan Petro's presentation showed me that i need to start learning more about coding and more languages. He also opened my eyes and showed me that you can get a job from it. I have used his Coke machine hack that he showed off and it feels cool to have someone look over your shoulder and see you in the mainframe of a machine.

    4. It affects me by making me want to learn more about hacking and progressing through my skills and have fun with it but also consider it as a job source.

  29. 1. Links #4 and #1 in number four hacking is child's play people that do it for bad could really hurt someone in the long run and from what number one says it make it feel like that could happen any day now.
