(S8) The Internet

Now it is 2014 and the internet has become an important part of our lives.

Millions of people use the Internet every single day as a regular day to day tool. It has changed so much over the past ten years. We now use the Internet to search up things we need to know. Also we use it for school projects as well as in college for various assignments.

A Day in the Life of The Internet: Infographic

1. Give a few facts about the Internet. From top 2 links.

2. Select a moment from the Internet History link and describe how that development contributed to the evolution of the Internet as we know it today.

3. What is the Opte Project?

4. Compare web browsers. Choose one, describe features.

Top ten browsers, browsers,  more browsers.

Nooo repeats!

  1. 1- a:The Internet was initially developed by the IPTO with the intention of helping to develop the progress of computing technology by linking the work being done by all the best academic computer centers.
b: At&T launches the first modem in 1960
2- In 1969 CompuServe, the first commercial online service, is established. This is significant because it was the first of what is now one of the largest multi billion dollar stores to date. It was the first ever service offered online to users who had access to the internet, which is something that a lot of us enjoy and take advantage of now.
3- The opte project is Barrett Lyon's attempt to map out the internet and teach students about how it works. Although a cool concept, the internet is so huge and there are so many unexplored pages, that really something started in 2003 could never be finished due to all of the content added on a daily basis.
4- Google chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. 5 of the top brands of internet browsers to date. While they all do their job, some are better than others. For me, one browsing software sticks out beyond the rest. Firefox is the most open user and efficient browser on my computer. Although I do use google chrome a lot, with firefox I am able to do a lot more, such as proxies, which are always fun.

    3. The Opte Project is, basically, a map of the internet.

    4. Google Chrome.
Google Chrome was built for speed. Secure browsing and sync capabilities that allow you to access your customized browser from any computer. It's security is top notch above all the other browsers and it's easy to use.

    2. The initial idea of the Internet was credited as being Leonard Kleinrock's after he published his first paper entitled "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets" on May 31, 1961. This is definatley vital to the internet, because without KleinRock he Internet might not even be here today.

    3. Barrett Lyon is teaching students how the internet works,

    4. think that Chrome is best, I use it personally and have no trouble with it, you can link your gmail to your chrome which helps with pvlearners. My Father even set up seperate accounts on his computer for himself my mom and sister because those are the tree people who use that computer.

Apple is the most popular mobile internet vendor accounting for 25.9% of mobile web use
2.)1996-More email is sent than postal mail in the USA
this has an impact because that marks the point when the internet is used more for communicating than regular mail is used this also foretells what will happen to the internet eventually its used to look up stuff more than a dictionary!
3.)The Opte Project is a project that is trying to make an accurate model of the extent of the Internet using visual graphics. Its also trying to show the whole universe in 1 dimension
4.) I picked Google Chrome cause hats my favorite web browser and i wanted to learn more about it, Google Chrome was released September 2nd 2008 and in 43 languages, as of 2013, StatCounter estimates that Google Chrome has a 39% worldwide usage share of web browsers, making it the most widely used web browser in the world! Google Chrome 5.0, announced on May 25, 2010, was the first stable release to support all three platforms.Chrome allows users to make local desktop shortcuts that open web applications in the browser. The browser, when opened in this way, contains none of the regular interface except for the title bar, so as not to "interrupt anything the user is trying to do". This allows web applications to run alongside local software

  5. 1: The internet is an amazing piece of technology that revolutionizes our everyday lives. People who use social media programs use the for about 3.2 hours each day. More than 70% of people that do have internet access use it each and every day. These statistics alone show just how important the internet is to all of us.

2: In 1990, the first search engine Archie was created, setting the standards for all modern search engines. Since so many search engines are used each day, this was definitely a great advancement in technology.

3: The OPTE project is an innovative map of the entirety of the world's technologies. It is still in the process of being developed, but will revolutionize the viewing of technology worldwide once completed, and could easily help businesses and individuals.

4: While many web browsers are very useful, my personal favorite is definitely Google Chrome. I like it because it is easy to use, easy to organize, and almost always manages to run quickly when in use. These are just some of the features that make it better than other browsers.

  6. 1.
Americans consume an enormous amount of media daily via television, radio, phone and computer. As you read this article on the Internet, perhaps while checking the text messages on your smartphone or listening to satellite radio, that statement undoubtedly rings true. But exactly how much media flows to individuals and households in a year? Try 6.9 zettabytes -- that's 6.9 million MILLION gigabytes.THIS IS A LOT!!!!!! Also the media consumption levels are about 15.5 hours a day. Thats a lot!
    2. 1971 was a big contribution because this was when the first email was sent. This sparked a new evolution of the internet. Now today thousands of e-mails are sent everyday.
    3. The Opte Project is a project created by Barrett Lyon that seeks to make an accurate representation of the extent of the Internet using visual graphics.
Opte (pronounced op-tee) originated from the Latin word opti, meaning "optical". The name originated from the project creator Barrett Lyon and the fluid nature of the name opte.org made it stick.
The project was started in October 2003 in an effort to provide a useful Internet map with open source code. Lyon believes that the network mapping can help teach students more about the Internet. It can also be used to visualize sites of disasters in the world, citing the significant destruction of Internet capabilities after a disaster. Additionally it can be used as a gauge for the growth of the Internet and the areas of growth. This is cool I think this should continue to teach people.
    4. I love using Firefox. Its toolbar and settings is easily accessed as well as the search and website bar. Chrome is annoying to me because its very laggy on any computer I use. Safari is not good because it is hard to navigate. Internet explorer is the 2nd best because it has everything that Firefox has except, easy access to the settings bar. Its a little harder to find on the toolbar.

    3) The Opte Project is a visual representation of the Internet's extent across the world.

    4) Like most people on this blog, I myself prefer Google Chrome as a web browser. To me, it feels cleaner and faster than the rest. It appears more organized than other browsers. The last time I used Firefox, it would keep throwing all these "new" features at me trying to come off as innovative and hip, but it was just overwhelming.

    2. Ray Tomlinson sends the first e-mail, This has had a great impact on society because we use it so commonly now but back then it was a big achievement. The ability to send documents to different machines was a big deal because it was a much faster and simpler way to tell something to someone or to move documents.

    3. The Opte project is a project created by Barrett Lyon that seeks to make a accurate representation of the extent of the Internet using visual graphics. The project was started in 2003 to provide a internet map with open source code Lyon believed it could teach students more about the internet. It can also be used to sites of disaster in the world. This showed significant destruction of Internet capabilities after a disaster or serous event.

    4. Google chrome is my main browser because of its ease of use. Firefox and Chrome are incredibly similar but each have their own pros and cons. Google Chrome has more customization but Firefox has more support. Either way their both good browsers but my preferred choice is Chrome because I like the micromanaging it has and the customization it offers

    b. 88% Of market shares go to google

2)1962 Paul Baran suggests transmission of data using fixed size message blocks. without that thought, we would not have half of the new ideas that we have today.

    3) Opte is a project thats end goal is to be able to accurately and physically see the extent of the internet, to make it a visible and "tangible" map of the internet.

Javascript is used worldwide for websites and games on the internet. It enabled people to insert their own code onto websites and it does jobs that normal html script cannot do. Lots of programs and games are made with Java, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Eclipse, Lotus Notes, Minecraft, OpenOffice, Runescape, and Vuze.

    3. The Opte project is basicly aiming to map every connection on the Internet from a single computer and a single Internet connection with an overall goal of creating a map of the entire Internet. It was created by Barret Lyon and was started in 2003.

    4. Torch Web Browser is a browser that is truly unique. I haven't experienced anything like it. It has a built in torrent client, file saving and sharing, and it can play media files straight from the browser. Torch browser lets you not only find videos and audio, but also easily save web media from virtually any site you go to. Torch browser's media grabber is integrated into the browser and supports all kinds of media file types, so once you find a web video or a song you want to save, you can easily grab and save it.

    2. Dot-com: A term used to describe Internet websites ending with the domain suffix .com. This term started being used and was popularized in 1995 during the start of the dot-com boom, when companies and individuals in large quantities started websites on the Internet and started making a lot of money. Between 1995 and 2001, the Internet experienced what is now referred to as the dot-com bubble, which was the time dot-com companies and websites were making an enormous amount of money primarily off of stocks until the bubble started to burst in 2000 and Internet companies started going under.
    3. The Opte Project is a project created by Barrett Lyon that seeks to make an accurate representation of the extent of the Internet using visual graphics.
    4. I chose Deepnet Explorer. It was released in 2005. It was the first anti-phishing web browser in the world that has helped millions of Internet users fight against phishing websites. Today, all leading web browsers have followed suit and provided anti-phishing features.

The internet contains billions which seems like countless websites created by regular people, small business', large companies, and many others that makes it a limitless location for information and entertainment. Also in 1993 the internet faced its first real debut as it was released for the entire world to use.

    2. In 1960 AT&T released the dataphone and the first known MODEM. We all know what a modem is coincidentelly and if they were not made it would be virtually impossible to access the internet in the first place. So AT&T created this device so the internet could actually be used on a different new "computer/ dinosaur".

    3. This project was developed by Barrett Lyon and was basically developed to help explain the internet as it looks also giving a visual representation of it through the globe (the picture). Though as we all know the internet will cease to be the same so you cannot really teach what the internet is since it is constantly changing. Though you have to let the "students" figure it out on there own if you really want them to know what the internet is.

    4. Many web browsers are better than others. I remember when internet explorer was good, then for some reason it changed and became "slow". Right now i use Google Chrome because it seems very easy to navigate and is very fast for browsing.

  21. 1. Broadband is telecommunication that is provided by multiple companies. Each offers their own features that different than the next company. FiOS is now up to $200 a month, which is ridiculous. DSL is has much lower speeds and baseband due to all information being transmitted and received through a single telephone line.

    2. Before the internet, there was the ARPANET. This was, at the time, the most advanced method of data packet switching between computers. It influenced the general operation of the internet, but with a different system of transmission.

    3. The Opte Project is a project created by Barrett Lyon that seeks to make an accurate representation of the extent of the Internet using visual graphics.

    4. Internet Explorer, the most famous one known for crashing and giving many viruses. Very slow. I chose this one because sadly I do use Internet Explorer at home, it crashes a lot, pages won't load and really slow. Unlike the top five: Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer is on the top five list, but it's bad.

    2) In 1973, the first VoIP call was made. This was the beginning for our 2014 times, as the majority of phones now run through the internet instead of through standard phone lines. Most cellphones place calls through 3G or LTE, while business phones are now connected through ethernet.

I see it as clean, similar to Google Chrome, however boasts a more traditional layout with popup windows for settings, etc, instead of a Chrome Machine-like tabbed experience. It also offers a reading list if there's a website you want to come back to but don't want to bookmark. Safari also seamlessly syncs between your iPhone, iPad, and any computer which has downloaded Safari.

  29. 1. The internet runs on a TCP/IP protocol, TCP is the language servers use to communicate and send data, and the IP is in a way the name of the server, although it’s a lot more complicated than that.

    2. In my opinion a very pivotal moment is when DNS was created. The DNS servers are basically the backbone of the internet and is what makes it run as smoothly as it does. Without a DNS server it would be much more difficult to connect to other servers. It’s like a road sign telling the packets where to go.

    3. The Opte project is an attempt to map out the internet, in order to see waisted IP space and to visualize it’s extent. In a way it’s like graphing another universe or as it says on the projects homepage “This project was created to make a visual representation of a space that is very much one-dimensional, a metaphysical universe.”

    4. Personally I would choose Google Chrome, based on the review it says it gets a lower score for lack of parental controls but when you reach the age group that we are at (along with maturity level) we don’t exactly need parental controls so that category is kinda irrelevant. Although Firefox would be a good second choice because of its support across multiple platforms. If you are just an average computer user Google Chrome is fast, safe, and reliable. Although it’s closed source it’s still good. Firefox, on the other hand, is open source and has much support.
