Mobile Computing

This week: We will take time to use this blog as an 'in classroom assignment' with discussion instead of blog homework.  The completed assignment will be due by Friday.   Read through the articles.  Answer both questions (1 & 2) with a minimum of 100, thoughtful words each.  Add your own relevant commentary based on the information presented in the articles.

1.  Read through this website thoroughly.  Pick four of the most important points, that appeal to you personally and support your point of view!  Your points can be taken from either side; all pro, half pro, all con or any combination.  Four points...

2.  Pick one of the links below and comment on the content or a sublink.

  1. 1. One point that's pro-tablet states, "Tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials." This is a huge point. Textbooks are the most inconvenient learning tools to carry around, and make backpacks significantly heavier. For those students who don't want to carry all of them leave them at home, but then can't do homework at school. A tablet Holds all of those textbooks in a small compact case with a screen and can be carried with ease. Another big point is that they are much less expensive in the long run. Holding all those textbooks as data is way cheaper than aper and ink.

On the opposite side, They can cause eye-strain, headaches, blurry vision, and other health related issues. I get headaches when watching a screen too long. Reading whole textbooks like this makes me sick. Finally, they are extremely distracting, with their included games and internet providing opportunities for students to do something other than their work.

    2. In the link called "Ruled by Tablets," the article explains how tablet sales have increased dramatically and threaten the life of the PC. I think the PC will always last, because there are still the people who work with computers, and tablets are for the everyday user who browses the internet and plays games. Tablets, however, can't compare with the massive computing power of a PC. Movies, programs, Operating Systems, construction, architecture, and space travel all rely on desktop computers. Even tablets are designed with desktop computers, so even tablets are a little dependent on the life of a PC.

  2. 1 Tablets can hold a ton of books in a small space. You could have a whole library of books on a tablet. This is awesome because you can save space. A bunch of space. Tablets save paper. We use a bunch of trees to make a bunch of books. We could save the environment by reducing the use of paper. It is practical now to do so, so why not save the earth. Tablets would be stolen. They are more valuable, and much more likely to be stolen than a textbook is. This would drive up costs, as tablets would be constantly replaced. Files can be stored on a cloud, not in a backpack making work much easier. One can work on homework anywhere if they have it on a cloud, and is a progressive direction for education to go toward.

2 I chose teenagers are changing the world. I agree with this, as we grow up using the internet, with constant internet acces. It makes sense to adapt to this change, and this would mean adapting how we are educated. We can no longer pretend we don't constantly have access to the internet when we are in a classroom, it makes sense and seems very practical to design a way to learn to work with the way the world is changing.

  3. 1. One thing that got my appeal was in the PRO - Tablet number 10. And it was basically telling us about how if there where 100 teachers they would use an average of 250,000 pieces of paper anualy. And it was explaining how the more teachers we have the more paper we use. The second one was in the Con - Tablet. number 2 saying that tablets cost more than textbook themselves. Then back on the PRO - Tablet number 12. They said that tablets can exchange file to another tablet instead of paper. I found that interesting because if a teacher needs to give homework to a kid thats sick the teacher could do it VIA tablet. And last but not least I found that number 14 Pro - Tablet. That students read more on a tablet then on actual paper.

    2. In the link Ruled by tablet, it was explaining that the sales for tablets are more than pc's themselves. Though PC's will still be around, hand held devices will go through the roofs. In my opinion PC's are 10 times better than tablets. They have better processers and you can download games on to a desktop. I also feel that tablets are to easy to brake.

  4. 1. What really stood out to me was that the apple tablets were extremely higher rate than all the others. the charts showed that the Ipads are the number one choice of everyone. Tablets are a wonderful choice for readers everywhere, because you download almost any book that you want to read and it stores it right on the tablet and you can download as many books as you like, because these tablets hod and extreme amount of space on them. You can treat these tablets like you treat desktops. You can do as much as a desktop could and even more. Apple has come a very long way but Samsung more than doubled 263% in a year and that is excellent for them. Tablets can replace all of the textbooks, because they hold more value and you can enjoy learning on a tablet. Tablets are good if you have to go somewhere and have to something online but if you are at home i would use a PC instead of a tablet, just because i get things done faster on a PC.

    2. They are saying that tablets someday or even sooner will take all of the PC's out but i disagree very much. Tablets do serve a great use to everyone and everyone has fun and enjoys using them. PC's will always be around, because everyone is different. In my opinion i like working with PC's better, because i am way more comfortable using them and they have been around a lot longer than tablets. Also mostly everything is done on a PC, such as movie making and certain programs that all the tablets are capable of having.

  5. 1.) The most important part for me was that tablets can hold 1000s of books on it and you can do homework and take test/quizes on the tablet. This is huge because you would no longer need back packs , pencils, pens, paper, and other school supplies that you need to buy every year for school. With a tablet however you wouldn't need any of that because the tablet can do it all.

2.) I click on "Ruled by Tablets" and it should that the sales of tablet increased and threaded PC's. I think PC's will last for a long time to come an then they will slowly die away not in one huge decrease but slowly and nobody will really notice it.

    1. 1.) This is also great because you have every thing with you no matter where you go and you can access it from all of your devices.

2.) There sales decreased by 6.4% in the forth quarter of 2012 while tablet sales increased by 75.3%. This shows how popular tablets are becoming while like i said PC's will decrease slowly until they are very uncommon among the populous.

  6. 1. "Tablets may be too difficult for less-technologically-savvy students to operate." The solution to the is by teaching children from an early age how to use computers.

"Tablets enable students to cut corners or cheat on schoolwork." You can cheat just as easy with a computer connected to the internet. You can never stop kids from cutting corners.

"Handheld technological devices including tablets are associated with a range of health problems." I agree this is an issue. My eyes hurt after looking at a computer all day. This can be fixed with products such as Gunnar glasses that block the light that is harmfull to your eyes.

    1. "People who read print text comprehend more, remember more, and learn more than those who read digital text." I disagree. I read faster using online text. I do see this as an issue with other people but I think they could could get used to it if we teach from a young age to read from a screen

    2. 2. "Teenagers & Smartphones: How They're Already Changing The World" I have seen first-handedly how the constant connection to the everyone lowers attention spans and decreases intellectual conversation. This is because the fact that you can only text messages about 50 words long. You cannot have intelectual conversation in 50 words or less. You can't add the evidence that allows for the deep meaning in a 50 word message. It lowers attention spans because you ar always getting hundreds of short messages so you are never prepared when someone conveys long messages.

  8. 1.) Well the pros are that the tablet is very small and a nice size as-well it holds a lot of information and is faster to search and fing information the cons are it can be distracting battery problems and it needs to be charged constantly it also takes time to get used to a tablet and learn how to use it. Pros on a textbook are all the information is right there infront of you and its in a way were it helps you condense the subject easer.

2.) I picked teenagers changing the world because i think its very true because teenagers are very interested in new popular things.

  9. 1. Point 1, Bringing technology to the class now prepares teens for technology when they get out of high school and get a job in technology. It's better to bring technology early so that kids can gain technology skills and get good jobs. Isn't that what school is for? To better educate us so we can get better jobs in this though economy?
Point 2, Tablets can hold hundreds of books, quizzes, homework and more! ANd if you need a newer updated version of the textbook then you can just download it instead of buying a $100 textbook.
Point 3,Schools spend 8 billion dollars a year buying textbooks, downloading a newer textbook on a tablet will save schools $250-$1000 for each student every year. That will save the school a lot allowing them to have no concern with money.
Point 4,Not only dose it cost less, but students do better on standardized tests, plus majority of students prefer learning on a device then a textbook.

    2. I chose teens changing the world, because we grew up with technology, it's in our nature to use and know things about technology, Plus technology helps make the world easier, you can just look it up on the internet instead of taking hours looking through a book.

    1. To add on to #2 it surprised me that only 37% of teens had a smart phone and that girls rely on smartphones more than guys for a primary Internet access device. Also that most of the people that own a smartphone are ages 12-17. I think that these numbers will rise in the future.

  11. 1-1. "Using tablets is more expensive than using print textbooks." Nowadays, especially for older students, textbooks just don't cost $14.26 as this point claims. I Think that this point is relative to where you are and how old the students are.
1-2. "Tablets help students learn more material faster." I find this highly agreeable, as I can browse a website on a tablet and read it more enjoyably as opposed to reading it on a laptop. Reading on a laptop is just boring, and makes it hard to focus. Also, it's a pain in my neck to keep my head low and pointed forward, I like the mobility of a tablet computer.
1-3. "A broken tablet requires an experienced technician to fix, which can be costly and time-consuming. Textbooks can usually be repaired with basic supplies such as glue or tape." This point is agreeable, however, I must offer a rebuttal, because the tablet (aside from being fragile and expensive) is more versatile and arguably more useful. It can perform infinitely more functions than the textbook ever could. In the wrong hands, either the book or the tablet can be irreparably damaged.
1-4. "Tablets allow teachers to better customize student learning." I think this is an excellent point, because it helps break away from the monotonous routine of school, where it goes learning, packet, learning, packet, test, rinse, repeat.

    2. Now, as far as the ruling position held by the tablets goes, I believe that the PC's throne hasn't been totally overthrown so much as they've been put on the backburner, so to say. PC's aren't going anywhere soon, and there's no denying that. We still need the power of a PC as opposed to a tablet, due to the amount of peripherals that can go with a PC, not to mention the amount of programs that tablets just don't get. Tablets may be more mobile, but it'll take quite the tablet to usurp the position that PC's hold in modern computing technology.

  12. 1) Choosing tablets over books involves considering a variety of factors, including what makes it more appealing or useful. Some of the following points have led me to believe a tablet has some essential pros and cons.

POINT 1: A tablet's screen can cause irritation for the eyes and cause individual to become dizzy or have headaches from excessive use.

POINT 2: Textbooks or novels are exponentially cheaper with an increasing amount of used bookstores.

POINT 3: Manufacturing the tablets inhibits slavery in third world countries where people are forced to work in factories producing the devices in order to live.

POINT 4: Actual books look great on a shelf inside of a house and create a sophisticated image for the owner.

    2) The article that gained my attention most was "Teenagers and Smartphones change the world." In the contents, it stated 37% of american teens have smartphones in which 50% of them access the internet via phones only. Our future definitely depends on technology to execute specific human needs, but needs to be controlled. Will the Technology Age take things too far?

  13. 1. Eighty-one percent of K-12 teachers believe that "tablets enrich classroom education." In addition, tablets can save a ton of space, since they can hold hundreds of textbooks, homework, quizzes, and other files, all of which eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials on each and every device. Adding on, the information that is bought via apps on tablets is around 50-60 percent less money then actual textbooks. Also, tablets are much lighter than textbooks. Finally, e-textbooks can be updated instantly to get new editions or information.
    2. I clicked on and read about the 'Teenagers changing the World' link. It was extremely interesting. I was surprised at first, then when I thought about it more it made perfect sense. Two things that took me by surprise at first is that 37 percent of American youth ages 12-17 now have a smartphone, which is up from 23% in 2011, and that 23 percent of teens own a tablet.

  14. 1. My favorite part is that tablets can fit over thousands of books, assignments, and other type of files you would need for a project like a word document. This is better because then if you have a tablet you might not even need a backpack because all of your school related things would be in the tablet. Another point that I liked was that tablets are easier and more fun to use and that would make grades rise in every class because you can actually want to do your home work or read a book because o how fun it would be to use the tablet.

    2. I chose the link Ruled By Tablets and it said that people are wanting tablets more than PCs and they knew that because somewhere in about the fourth quarter of 2012 PC shipments dropped by about 6.4 percent when tablet sales roe at about 75 percent but eve though the PC sales are dropping they are saying that PCs are still going to be used. In my opinion I would say that tablets are better because of there light weight and how they are really portable and the PCs are better for projects because of how they have lots of memory in them.

  15. 1. a. Tablets help students learn material faster. This is very important because this means more information can be learned in a shorter time period. Plus we wont have as many worthless broken outdated books lying around.
    b. Tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials. This will help eliminate pollution and cut down on paper products AND help students with their organization skills.
    c. Students who own tablets purchase and read more books than those who read print books alone. As far as I'm concerned, I would read books all the time if i had a tablet. For example, lets just say I have a huge jiu jitsu tournament in vegas and I'm flying. I get super bored on the flight and pull out my beautiful tablet to read.
    d. Using a tablet is so intuitive that it makes learning fun and easy. One of the biggest problems in education is the fact that it is very difficult to make it fun.

    2. I think the only way tablets will completely out date pcs is if there is better advancements in wifi.

  16. 1) Tablets are useful for many reasons. One is that they weigh and cost nothing near the amount of texts books. Buying a lot of textbooks and a lot of tablets add up to close to the same amount at first but, after time the text books will cost more because you will still have that one tablet when you need to buy more text books, and also with the tablets you can get hundreds of books for free with the apps on there and it will also way a lot less. They are also able to update information quicker than textbooks can, because on the tablet you just download an update and with textbooks you need to buy a whole new textbook with the new information. They weigh less in obvious reasons, but they can also take away loose papers for homework and notes because you can do all of that on the tablet. You wont even need a backpack at that point all you will need is the tablet. So basically you will not only save money but you will have to carry less around with you.

    2) In the LA school plugs into the future the school is already starting to use the tablets, but only starting, they take the carts to the different classes and use them from the carts and the carts only. The way they should be used is they should be kept by the student the whole time so that they can take books and loose papers out of the picture.

  18. 1. A. On the pro tablet side number six talks about tablets giving students the ability to write in the textbooks with out having to worry about having to erase it when your bone or having to pay for it. So you could highlight point you think would be important. You also have a built in dictionary for, when you are reading you come across a word you don't know. Being able to do these little things could help a lot. Almost everyone will write in their textbook a least once for what ever reason. And being able to know what one or two words mean could be the difference in someone understanding the material.

    B. On the Pro side of tablets point 9 is one of the best reasons why to switch to e-textbooks. Being able to update your text books so that you always have the most updated information you can. This would help because you would know that the things you are learning wont be out of date by the time you get out of school.

    C. Pro tablet point 3 says that the Kindle fire can hold up to 1,000 books in one GB of storage. This would make it way easier to carry around books, to and from class. Then because it is easy to carry books from home to school, there would be no need for a school set of books which would save the school money.

    D. Con tablet point 16 says that it might be hard for less tech savvy students to operate. This could be true but over time and as school goes on they would get use to using what ever tablet they have been given to them. They also could get their friends to help them out and show them how to use the basics of the device.

    2. On the teenagers change the world, I found the % of teens that have a smart phone a little low at 37%. I thought this would be way higher at the point in time we are now.

  19. 1. The four most interesting points to me on this website are, "Tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in print textbooks. Tablets give users the ability to highlight and edit text and write notes without ruining a textbook for the next user. Tablets have a search function, a backlighting option to read in low light, and a built-in dictionary. Interactive diagrams and videos increase student creativity, motivation, attentiveness, and engagement with classroom materials." This point is important to me because sometimes students do not know what a word means, and so they will have to look it up, and it is much easier to find out new informations with the definition at the touch of a finger. another good point is, "Print textbooks are heavy and cause injuries, while a tablet only weighs 1-2 pounds. Pediatricians and chiropractors recommend that students carry less than 15% of their body weight in a backpack, but the combined average weight of textbooks in History, Mathematics, Science, and Reading/Language Arts exceeds this percentage at nearly all grade levels from 1-12. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, during the 2011-12 school year more than 13,700 kids, aged 5 to 18, were treated for backpack-related injuries." This point is also a good one because carrying around textbooks really stinks. With the weight of a tablet only weighing around one pound versus a textbook weighing 3 pounds each. "Tablets lower the amount of paper teachers have to print for handouts and assignments, helping to save the environment and money. A school with 100 teachers uses on average 250,000 pieces of paper annually. [14] A school of 1,000 students on average spends between $3,000-4,000 a month on paper, ink, and toner, not counting printer wear and tear or technical support costs."
Saving the environment is important to me, because there is no reason to waste all the money on taking down trees when the same thing can be compressed to a gigabyte of informations.
and the last point is, "Students who own tablets purchase and read more books than those who read print books alone. The average tablet-owning US student reads 24 books per year on a tablet compared with 15 in print for those who do not own a tablet. [17] According to a survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 30% of e-content readers (including 40% of those under age 30) say that they now spend more time reading than they used to due to the availability of e-content." Reading books is awesome. and so the more you read the better. That is all.
    2. I read the one about teenagers changing the world, and thought it was very interesting to see that there is almost no change in the numbers from different racial groups for owning a phone or smartphone, and also that there is no change in the numbers based on how much the families make.

  20. 1. I beleive that tablets are a great use of technology for educational puposes and teachers complain about wasting paper the copy machine is broken . They side with having tablets in stead of wasting paper and having to go by a lessoned book plan . Plus its lighter and eaiser to carry and is a great way to search the material you need and there is a way to take notes and document them for another time. You can also use the tablet for quizzes and tests.
    2. I clicked teenagers changing the world i agree that teenagers use smarphones more than desktops mostly for it cpabilities for on roadtrips and in class for information.

  22. 1. I think the best point of tables on the pro side would be, "Tablets help students learn more material faster. Technology-based instruction can reduce the time students take to reach a learning objective by 30-80%, according to the US Department of Education and studies by the National Training and Simulation Association." This by far is the most outstanding fact about tablets... The numbers alone are worth buying tablets. Another pro would be, "Tablets help students better prepare for a world immersed in technology. Students that learn technology skills early in life will be better prepared to pursue relevant careers later in life. The fastest growing and highest paying jobs in the United States are technology intensive. Employment in "computer and information systems" is expected to grow by 18% between 2010-20, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. [13]. This is another numbers fact and proves that tablets should be implemented. However, there is alot of cons against the tablets. An example of this would be, "Tablets are more susceptible to theft than print textbooks. In San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles, robberies related to internet-enabled handheld devices (including tablets) have accounted for 50, 40, and 25 percent respectively of all robberies in 2012. Stolen and lost internet-enabled handheld devices have cost Americans more than $30 billion in 2012.". This would prove a problems to schools and put a lot more pressure on students. Also the school also has to ask themselves if they think their students are responsible enough to handle the tablets. This brings me into the next issue witch is tablets are distracting; many students could not be mature enough to handle the tablets.

    2. I did ruled by tablets link... It shows how tablet sales are going through the roof whereas the pc and laptop sales are struggling.

  23. I think that one of the most important points in this article that despite the projected initial cost of implementing tablets would I think eventually the use of tablets would bring us forward to a more technology friendly world as well as introducing us to a wide range of educational possibilities. Another point would be even though the tablets would provide a wide range of distractions our world as it is has and is accumulating more distractions. I think that the students of today will have to learn to ignore detractions regardless of if they are in school or not. The third point that I found was that most textbooks may not yet be offered on tablets now but if we were to embrace them then the textbook companies would follow. The final point I have come across is that I think that the combined cost of textbooks and printer ink is just as wasteful as the production of tablets.
After Reading how teenagers are already changing the world with their mobile computing use I saw how a majority of teenagers get their primary internet access through their phones. They also talked about how there is a study about teens hiding their online activity from their parents. I thought that this is really not anything new because for years teens have been hiding as much from their parents as they can and I don’t think that will change any time soon regardless of the medium. I think that the rapid maturing of teens with regards to technology is that we are the ones who will take the technology and make it our own regardless of peoples attempts to constrain us. I think it is a problem of social views and not one of technology.

  24. 1.
    a. "Tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials." I think this is a huge plus for tablets. The ability to easily store and organize numerous documents is significantly more useful than actually have a physical copy. I know that personally I have a very hard time organizing the physical copies of my homework and notes.
    b. "Tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in print textbooks." Tablets also have a variety of features that make them much more beneficial to a student than a physical textbook. Tools like highlighting make reading and note taking on a tablet much more useful than a textbook or a notebook.
    c. "Tablets help students better prepare for a world immersed in technology." This piece is perhaps more significant than the rest. In modern society technology is increasingly becoming the center and focus for everything we do in life and because of that having them in normal use in the classroom would be extremely beneficial to students looking to be successful members in society.
    d. "Files on one tablet can be downloaded onto any other tablet, increasing flexibility and convenience for teachers and students." This is also a good point for arguing for tablets. Storing data on a device such as an ipad makes it really easy to transfer files to other tablets or computers, allowing or easier management of files than simply having several physical copies.
    2. The increasing acceptance of smart phones and other digital devices by teenagers is changing the world as we know it. This factor is changing everything from school work to gaming and from jobs to simply browsing the internet. While the actual effects of this rapid increase are not quite clear as of now and can only be speculated about we can be sure that it will have a lasting effect on the world as we know it.

  26. 1. One point that appealed to me is a pro for tablets, that states that textbooks are heavy and can cause injuries. With arthritis and back problems, carrying textbooks around is extremely painful. Another point is a pro for textbooks, which I disagree with. It states that textbooks can't freeze or stop working. While this is true, as technology gets better and better, devices crash less and less. The third point states that using a tablet is intuitive, which, in turn, sparks creativity. I agree with this completely. The final point is that not a lot of books are available electronically, which is true, but something we should aim to fix.

    2. I find what LA Center is doing to be awesome! It's nice to see that schools are finally starting to jump in to the digital age, and I hope our school eventually does the same. I feel it will help in the long run, especially with many students in this class struggling with grades and schoolwork.

  27. 1: The first link clearly is just listing/ telling us the pros and cons on using a tablet in class. Personally I think the tablet is the next greatest invention for the classroom since a smart board! The four most important points to me are: that 81% of teachers think that a tablet enriches education in the classroom, tablets also save paper because they have the textbooks you need on the tablet, tablets are also not heavy like textbooks, lastly, tablets allow teachers to customize their lessons for better learning. For me, their is no explaining, I love the tablet and believe it should be in every student hand counting the fact that you can easily find answers no learn better.

2: I clicked on the link about students changing the word. The link provides us with key statistics about how most children have either a smarty phone or a cell phone in general. It also says how many kids use the phone for online purposes which is pretty interesting. Statistically, the link shows us that girls like to talk over a phone more than boys do which is obviously true lol:). In many ways, teens represent the leading edge of mobile connectivity, and the patterns of their technology use often signal future changes in the adult population. Teens are just as likely to have a cell phone as they are to have a desktop or laptop computer. I really enjoyed reading this link and looking at the statistics because I am part of those statistics.

  28. In my view, theses are the most important points in the article-

    1. On the Pros side, it explains that tablets can hold 100s of Ebooks, it would be extremely helpful for school if you needed your math book, science english, etc. You wouldn't have to hull around 15+ pounds of book either, it would all be compact in a small device. It also could help save paper which is a big help for our environment and earth. I just think this is a wonderful thing to have on a tablet, its small efficient and easy to read.

    2. On the Cons side, #5 caught my attention, most or some students can not afford or do not have internet at there home. This would be a huge problem if you need to do a project with the internet and a waste of a tablet unless your just using it for a book, it just seems like it's not to great of an idea. Unless they can some how connect to a neighbor or local service nearby.

    3. On the Pros side, it said that ebooks are cheaper then buying an actual printed copy of the book, this si a really nice idea because the books will not waste paper, they will not be as expensive and you can read it back lighten which I find very nice for reading in the dark.

    4. On the Cons side, another problem would be if the tablet was destroyed damaged or, it would require expensive work to be done on the tablet, a lot of time, and only a few people know how to repair a tablet, while text books could be repaired with tape, glue easy materials that are cheap and handy.

    5. The link I thought was interesting above was the La Center School so I selected it.
At first, students are starting to use tablets to take a test in a spanish class. The students are trying to push forward in wireless technology in class. Some of the students were explaining that it was easier to look through pages because you didn't have to flip through them, others said it was an all day study aide. The article is explaining for a classroom set that it was not a cheap process it cost around $70,000. They have begun using them in just a few classrooms.

  29. 1. In my opinion, the best points on the pro tablet side are: 1. Tablets help students learn more material faster. Technology-based instruction can reduce the time students take to reach a learning objective by 30-80%, and 3. Tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials. The average tablet contains anywhere from 8 to 64 gigabytes of storage space. and 7. Print textbooks are heavy and cause injuries, while a tablet only weighs 1-2 pounds. Pediatricians and chiropractors recommend that students carry less than 15% of their body weight in a backpack, but the combined average weight of textbooks in History, Mathematics, Science, and Reading/Language Arts exceeds this percentage at nearly all grade levels from 1-12. and also 10. Tablets lower the amount of paper teachers have to print for handouts and assignments, helping to save the environment and money. A school with 100 teachers uses on average 250,000 pieces of paper annually. Using tablets will decrease the amount of paper used by 100%, because it doesn't use any paper.

    2. The link I chose was "Ruled by tablets". It says that pc shipment sales have dropped 6.4%, and that tablets rose 75.3%. I think that tablets will become even more popular in the next years and eventually take out pc's.

  30. 1. E-Books cost 50-60% less than text books, most schools now are making kids have electronics than OLD SCHOOL books. I knew that one day this would happen, im going to miss the smell of old books. Yes I understand how our technology can help us and its more "Up to date" information than the "Average" book in the "Average" library. More people comprehend with a book than an electronic. Either Pro or Con its obvious that we are all on the road to have no more books anywhere, the average rate for books would fall and electronics go up. This maybe off topic but I have been thinking about it for some time. If we all turned to technology then what will we do if a technology crash happens? What will we do if this does happen? Books to be read to a child percentage is higher than on a road trip or on a plane. Number 11 pro says that they can customize the learning of the students in a classroom. I agree with the con Number 11 because it says they can use the devices to cheat on their homework assignments, only because im going to be honest, I would too. Its easy access to find the answers on the web. Another issue is that high schools are a trusting environment, it really isn't. See the thing is we can carry all these tech things that can help you for school, but there are thugs among us. Yes, even at SMHS we have teen thugs who like to steal the nice things, at schools who have the technology will more than likely have a thug problem. I do agree that it will be more organized and very kept together. Theres the problem of electricity fail or even damage of the tech, some kids cant even afford the clothing on there back that can keep them dry. Money wont be an issue with this but lots of other problems can.

    2. Now a days i've noticed that tablets are being used more than PC's. Ive chosen the link, "Tablets take over" and it doesn't surprise me how technology has updated over the years. PC's shipments dropped by 6.4% and the tablets shipment rose 75.3%. Maybe tablets will take over, and the PC will lose its touch, but its funny how technology has changed everything on this planet. I remember Mac computers that were like TV sets. If we change to tablets then its going to be a lot harder to do things that we normally cannot do with a PC.

  31. 1.i think that tablets should be the new text books of the future because tablets are really light and there so convenient you can almost use them every where like in the bus or in the car where ever plus you can download thousands of apps strait off the app store theres so many choices and theres lots off apps for every subject like math, science, english, social studies and many more
text books are old and need to be replaced no one likes to carry big text books and the information in the text books are old and outdated.

2.i chose teenagers changing the world and i would have to agree because teens are changing the world because of the new technology that we have because we can make change because we have grown up with technology and have advanced so far and now that we are a bit older and our brains have expanded a bit more we have more creativity and can make allot more change the way we think as humans we must upgrade our electronics every time

    a. Even though it may seem like teachers and education officials would not like this idea, "High-level education officials support tablets over textbooks." This shows that the stereotypical view of teachers may change as educators are learning more and more about technology. "Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Federal Communications Commission chair Julius Genachowski said on Feb. 1, 2012 that schools and publishers should 'switch to digital textbooks within five years to foster interactive education, save money on books, and ensure classrooms in the US use up-to-date content.'" Though this might not work right off the bat and teachers may not support the thought about having devices in the classroom for students to use, in the long run, it would most likely save schools money.

    b. On the other side, "Print textbooks cannot crash, freeze, or get hacked." This may be true. But are tablets just as heavy as textbooks are? You could have 100 textbooks on your tablet and it would barely weigh a gram over the original weight. How do I know this? This is one of the arguments that was introduced at the beginning of the article: "A 4GB tablet filled with 3,500 e-books weighs a billionth of a billionth of a gram more than if it were empty of data - a difference that is approximately the same weight as a molecule of DNA. The same number of physical books would weigh about two tons."

    c. Another negative point: "Manufacturing tablets is environmentally destructive and dangerous to human health." The factories that manufacture these tablets emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels for electricity and the use of energy. This does affect human health. The greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere causes a global warming effect. However, looking at a tablet scree for more than 2 hours at a time could be a direct detriment to eyesight failure and brain function.

    d. Now let's get back to the positives. "Print textbooks are heavy and cause injuries, while a tablet only weighs 1-2 pounds." Using tablets would mean that backpacks wouldn't need to implemented and children would not have to use heavy backpacks to carry all of their information. "During the 2011-12 school year more than 13,700 US children, aged 5 to 18, were treated in hospitals and doctors' offices for backpack-related injuries such as contusions, sprains, fractures, and strains to the back and shoulders." With a tablet, these numbers would go down significantly and might disappear completely.

    2) Scantrons and papers have been disappearing steadily in the La Center School District. The teacher who started it all, Rhea Heaton, started using iPads for tests. Students who have experienced it first hand say it's a point in the right direction. "I thought it was a lot easier than the paper format test," said sophomore Alex Firl, a student in Heaton's class. "For some reason, there's just something about technology that makes it a lot easier." Ever since they wre first implementing the tablets into Heaton's classroom, they have been literally choving the iPads into students hands. Students enjoy taking tests now, and they also do not have to drag their backpacks around. Instead, they carry their tablets around and enjoy learning.

  33. 1. I am 50/50 on this subject. I believe tablets can help the classroom to an extent but can't fully replace hard copy books. My reason for this is they are two different items that are both equally important. A textbook is much cheaper to afford so therefore schools can buy a bigger quantity of them. As with tablets though there activities you can do with them a textbook can't such as look up countless amounts of information and the weight of a tablet is much lighter than a textbook. A tablet can also strain your eyes from looking at the screen to long where on a book you can look at it a longer period of time without straining your eyes.

    2. On the L.A link I really do like it because it shows the full potential a tablet can do. In one case in the story they tell how the students math scores on average have raised because of it. One student sophmore Alex Firl says how he thought it would be easier taking his spanish test with paper and a pencil but now he's all on board with the ipad. The L.A district have been big on implementing technology in there education system and maybe with in time they can prove to the rest of us how technology can be a big step in our education.

  34. 1. “Tablets can hold hundreds of textbooks on one device, plus homework, quizzes, and other files, eliminating the need for physical storage of books and classroom materials.” --This is a great feature of tablets, a tablet is the only thing that one would need in the classroom. It helps keep everything in order and students aren’t struggling to keep their papers in order in their backpack.
“Tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in print textbooks.”-- Although this might not seem like such a big accomplishment or great thing about tablets, it is. The ability to use digital and technological resources is invaluable to a student, it allows them to search the dictionary for a book with the click of a button. It also allows them to do research straight from their “textbook”.
“Tablets have too many distractions for classroom use.”-- This is probably the largest problem with tablets, their ease of access allows for students to mess around with them in class. They are fairly small and can be concealed, it would also look like they were working if they were playing a game.
“A broken tablet requires an experienced technician to fix, which can be costly and time-consuming.”-- People will break these tablets; some will intentionally and other un-intentionally. We would need a full-time tablet repair technician to cover all of these problems.
    2. The school in LA seems to be doing fine in this venture of deploying iPads to the students, but I am sure that their are many problems with their setup. There may be some serious benefits with this project though and it would be good to investigate it.

  35. 1.) I feel that tablets would make education much easier, textbook are big and heavy and they have to be rented to students, plus a class set, and that is a lot of money. Textbooks dont last long and they get destroyed extremely quickly, I recieved a text book and when I got home to do my homework I couldn't because the page was missing. Tablets are light and they can hold multiple textbooks, homework assignments, quizzes, tests on the, while you need 5 different textbooks and then papers. Tablets lower the amounts of paper teachers have to use. Textbooks change constantly, new editions come out, but its a lot of money to buy all new textbooks for 200 students plus the class copies, but with tablets e-textbooks can be updated each year, if neccessary. Tablets over all are the better choice for schools, students, teachers, and education.
2.) I opened the link called "LA school plugs into the future" and read about a spanish teacher who has started using iPads instead of paper, he said he does this so there will be no more shuffling through papers, or loosing them. This article had students point of views in it too and they said it made testing easier and that using tablets was a step in the right direction. This LA school is not the only school who is doing it, I'm not sure of the name but one of my old teachers was telling us about his daughters school, he said each student has there own iPad that they so there work on. They take tests on it, do their math and science work on it. That iPad follows them through there school career and I believe all schools should be like that. This LA school was a good example of how all schools should become.

  36. 1. The frist point is that tablets are light weight and can hold thousands of textbooks. Tablets only weigh a pound or two. A 4GB tablet with 3,500 books downlaoded on it weighs a billionth of a billionth of a gram more than if it were empty of data. The same amount of text books weigh about two tons (pro). The second point is a textbook on a tablet can be instantly updated with new information. With regular textbooks, updated ones would have to be bought once in a while (pro). The third point is kids can easily get distracted with the tablets. Most students wouldn't listen to the teacher and insted play games, text, or go on social media sites (con). The fourth point is tablets can freeze, get hacked, and lose it's battery life. Unlike tablets, books don't need to be charged and can't freeze (con).

    2. I picked the "Ruled By Tablets" link. I found out that PC shipments have dropped 6.4% in the fourth quarter of 2012, while tablet sales rose 75.3%. More people are now buying tablets. I think in the future, tablets will replace PC. Tablest are already slowly becoming cheeper so more people can buy them. So far the tablet producer that has dominated is Apple selling over 22.9 million units. Then next producer is Samsung selling about 7.9 million units. Another vendor for tablets is Amazon selling 6.0 million units. These companies combined make up a total of 70.2% of all tablet sales. That is a lot of tablets. But I don't think we are ruled by tablets. Many schools and other placed don't use tablets.

  37. The 4 most appealing to me were E-textbooks on tablets cost on average 50-60% less than print textbooks, Tablets lower the amount of paper teachers have to print for handouts and assignments, helping to save the environment and money, On a tablet, e-textbooks can be updated instantly to get new editions or information and Students who own tablets purchase and read more books than those who read print books alone.

    1. I like theses because they really illustrate the useful and can be cost effective. They also actually inspire a love of learning and cause students to read more something that schools have been failing at for years. Over all theses are more cost effective and they inspire learning so there really is not a big downside to these devices.

2.I looked at the ruled by tablets link and though that some of the results were weird. It seems weird to me that apple has almost fifty percent of the tablet market when there are alternatives out there that work virtually the same and are a lot less expensive like the nexus seven. I don’t get why people still want to pay 500 for an ipad when you can now get virtually the same thing for as low as a hundred and fifty.

  38. 1. The four most appealing facts were A 4 GB tablet with 3,500 E-Books weighs a billionth of s billionth of s gram more than if it was empty. I mean who knew (other than Joey L.) that the amount of Gigs you have on your device changes its weight. Next fact was students who learned Algebra 1 through a digital device scored 20 percent higher than if they studied with a print text book. Next tablets help improve with less injuries because they weigh one to two pounds. Lastly students who have tablets buy more books than a person who reads them printed.

    2. I choose the Ruled By Tablets link and found that there has been an 6.4 percent drop in shipments for the Computer but an 7.3 percent increase in tablets. This does not surprise me because if you read my Desktop vs. Laptop I said that personal computers are not going to live for a huge amount of time. They are slowly dying to the more reliable mobile devices not just laptops but tablets too (hence the words Mobile Devices). I have also found that most tablet companies such as Samsung, Amazon inc., and other companies have risen up the percentage charts in the 2012 fourth quarter. Although the companies Apple and ASUS have lowered.

  39. 1. #3 #4 #8 #15 Pro Tablet- Tablets overall would decrease the amount of weight in your backpack.Such as textbooks homework we would widen the class room by getting rid of books. Homework would be a breeze while teachers wouldn't need to print off paper for homework or test reviews there by reducing costs of running a school all together. Also decreasing the number of books bought for students ranging from 50-500 dollars which is rediculous. While a Tablet costs 150-300 dollars. The tablets also hold multiple books so to save even more money. Which is what the school needs because students have to buy items taxpayers money is going into. The teachers money sometimes because they are scarce on supplies from time to time. We are also going into the tech age while people converted from books to kindles/tablets and liked it. Wouldn't it be nice to see kids born into technology and even see them go down a Technology Career because new jobs are opening every day in the technology field. Setting them down on the right path with make it easier for them to use technology further down the road. Also kids would be more easier and more fun and engaging in learning overall. I think school today is to boring using paper and a big book like we have for the past 20 years don't you think its time for a change by now.

    2. The link that I checked out was the LA School Plugs into the Future. In this link it shows how LA Center School buys about 70,000 dollars worth of iPad's and charging stations for them. Some students say its a right step in the direction after taking a Spanish test on a iPad. I think that tablets are starting to get integrated into school system such as the one I am talking about. I also very much like the quote "In 1980, a gigabyte of information storage could cost around $200,000. Today, a terabyte, or about 1,000 gigabytes, costs about $100, according to a June study by the Alliance for Excellent Education." This just shows how far technology has come and how much farther it will go. We need to start pumping technology like tablets into the hands of our children to open there mind and career path success.

  40. 1. Pro #3 Because everyone would like to not have to carry all their books all day, everywhere. #6 Is also true. Many textbooks have a picture or two of the galaxy but most Tablets can provide a 3D view of the galaxy, letting you go deeper into your experience. Though it may cause you to get sidetracked, the pros out weigh the cons in #6. #15 Is true as well, seeing as the Tablet can interact with you more than a textbook. Taking that into account, I think a tablet would definitely keep you more interested than a textbook could. The only Con I agree with is #14. Students with tablets might be distracted from the teacher. While thats the only Con I agree with, its a MAJOR con. Its also why I think our school might not be ready for tablets.

    2. "Here's something to think about. When friends and family used to call their local techie to find out what laptop or computer they should buy, it was because there were too many choices and complicated setup. Now they are buying tablets on their own because "they just work." No need for the techie to explain things, and they don't care if they aren't using even half of the features on the tablet." That was said by turfgrrl on that page and I think that is the reason right there. Tablets look and are easier to use to the uneducated. Looking easier and smoother makes it more marketable. I know someones parents who said they wanted to get a Mac for themselves. Then they ended up getting an Ipad because it "looked better". This is the reason why tablets are overshadowing PC's and Laptops. The majority of this world wants something that looks as least as a hassel as possible, but can still do its job and as much as I would rather have a PC, I'm not the majority of the world.

  41. 1. Point 1:(Con - Tablets have too many distractions for classroom use.) This is true for a variety of reasons. Namely, games are a great distraction to students as they are always available to students at any time.
Point 2:(Pro - Tablets help students learn more material faster.) Tablets also allow you to have a nearly limitless amount of information at your fingertips in tandem with whatever you are studying at the moment allows you to better grasp a subject or a certain piece of information.
Point 3:(Pro - Tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in print textbooks.) With tablets you can have access to things such as interactive maps or games which teach you about a topic in an entertaining way.
Point 4:(Pro - Tablets help students better prepare for a world immersed in technology.) We likely know, more than most, that the future will be immersed with technology, our lives likely revolving around it. The sooner one is able to work with tech, the better it will serve them for the rest of their life.

    2. I went to "Teenagers changing the World" link. It surprised me to see the lack of fluctuation in the percentages of teens with smartphones across many demographics. Although it does serve as a cultural statement in some cases, I find that smartphones appear to serve as more of a utility. This is based on the fact that 25% of teenagers use their smartphones as a "primary" source of internet access. This comes as a surprise to me as considering the increased difficulty in browsing the internet using a smartphone. I suppose the accessibility simply out-ways the difficulty.

    c) Tablets have too many distractions for classroom use. This is a major one, with all the games tablets can be very distracting.
    d) Print textbooks cannot crash, freeze, or get hacked. Unlike tablets, there is no chance of getting, spyware, or having personal information stolen from a print textbook.

    2. I chose the LA schools one. It looks like they are having a huge success with the iPads. The tablets can be used as an all-in-one study aide, Firl said. He typically conducts research on them, watches videos or accesses lesson plans. The school is having a bandwidth problem that they are trying to address though. The iPads have resulted in a 60-percent increase in the number of devices that access the high school's Internet. The goal of the school is to totally get rid of the backpack. The head of the project admitted it will take time to get it right though.

  43. 1. the first fact on the screen was very interesting to me, the weight of tablets? that has so much potential for providing schools with an amazing digital library. The first pro is also pretty cool, the fact that tablets can help students learn more material faster is really cool, it seems that if we invest in these, it could open to a lot of possibilities in terms of the curriculum. Another cool point is the 81% of K-12 students prefer tablets in the class room says a lot about the potential of these devices.

    2. The Run by tablets link, I thought it was pretty neat. The idea that the PC is slowly going out of style is a very interesting thought. The idea of the PC going away seems a little far fetched but isn't completely impossible. I really did enjoy reading the idea that PC's could die off.

  45. 1. The pros of using tablets and smart phones would be that the kids are already used to the devices and would be able to work with them easily. They would be able to search up subjects faster and have research faster as well. The flaws are that some kids are going to play games instead of work on assignments, or just be off task.

    2. All this article is pretty much saying is that tablets are becoming extremely popular and that they are becoming more popular bought than pc's.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1. a) Many students do not have sufficient home bandwidth to use tablets. If students are only given tablets and not textbooks, how are they going to do things at home for school? Using tablets is okay, but a textbook must be coupled with it because a good amount of students don't have good enough internet bandwidth.
    b) Tablets shift the focus of learning from the teacher to the technology. In class, the teacher should be the main focus of attention, but with tablets all around the classroom, that is what becomes the main focus of the kids in the classroom. They are giving little to no attention to the teacher because they are so focused on the tablet.
    c) Tablets may be too difficult for less-technologically-savvy students to operate. Students will be spending so much time figuring out how to operate the tablets that they are not even focusing on the school portion of it anymore. General courses would have to be set up on how to use the tablets which would take a considerable amount of time away from classroom.
    d) Print textbooks cannot crash, freeze, or get hacked. There are no problems that can arise with a textbook other than a couple pages being ripped or somebody writing profanity on the cover. With tablets, a lot of things can happen that require and money to fix.

    2. I read the article about the schools in LA. It appears that the students really like the tablets there which shows that some students really can succeed with them. It all really depends on the learning style you prefer. I have always preferred textbooks and paper handouts where as other students prefer everything on digital devices.

  47. 1.)

Point 1 - Tablets can hold many quizzes, books and more, and if you need a updated version of the textbook then you can just download it instead of buying a new book. Pro

Point 2 - E-textbooks on tablets cost on average 50% less than print textbooks. Tablets lower the amount of paper teachers have to print for handouts and assignments, helping to save the environment and money. Pro

Point 3 - On a tablet, e-textbooks can be updated instantly to get new editions or information and Students who own tablets purchase and read more books than those who read print books alone. Pro

Point 4 - It might be more complicated for kids that are not as techy as others. This could be true but over time and as school goes on they would get use to using what ever tablet they have been given to them. They also could get their friends to help them out and show them how to use the devices through practice and time. Con

    2. I chose teenagers changing the world, I agree because teenagers are always looking for new things and trying to upgrade and change. We have grown up with technology and have advanced so far and now that we are more understanding we have more creativity and can change the future like that.

  48. 1.) (stealing other peoples format)

Point 1 - For my first pick I chose con two which states that the cost of a tablet is much higher than the cost of textbooks that you would need for the same subject. I chose this because I believe that they left out quite a few variables that are very key to measuring this. Instead of just the one textbook I think we should factor in all the textbooks f that year and every year the students would be using the tablets, as well as the cost of all the materials that the tablet saves money on, giving a broader view on the cost.

Point 2 - For my second pick I chose pro four (oh the irony) where they make the projection that the tablet can save $250 - $1000 per student. I chose this projection because it more or less gave a slightly more in depth look at the claims from my previous choice and gave a lot more research for their findings, showing that tablets do, indeed, save you money.

Point 3 - For my third i chose pro number 6 which says that tablets have many more technological features than a textbook. I like this one because it really gives a basic example of a really huge advantage of using tablets, tablets have an infinite amount of info at your disposal, from apps, to books, to the internet which is a immensely large library of information with citations and resources.

Point 4 - For my final choice I picked pro eight which says that tablets help better immerse and prepare students for a world filled with technology. I think there is some huge truth in that. We are a society that is becoming more and more tech reliant on the daily, every day people are inventing amazing devices and software that is changing the world, and to be better successful we need people who are better compatible with technology, and the best way to immerse people into tech is to teach them with it.

    2. I chose the first link "Ruled by tablets" because it really is a situation we have been tackling for a while, will mobile computing kill the PC? It brings up the question of whether it is more realistic to use mobile computing devices to PC's for nothing more than just cost of materials.
