(S2) New Tech

January is a big month for New Tech.  The CES 2013 is usually the debut event for new gadgets, media electronics, digital devices, and more.  It's always exciting to see what's out there!  I've combined  two GenYES students blog entries here, but several more  "new tech" ideas will appear in future blogs.   Have fun exploring!

1.  Check out these "new tech" devices first and compare the two.  Which interests you the most?

Hands Free Video Call Headset The Hands-Free Videophone captures the user’s face with three cameras in each of the left and right sides of the frames. The video sent to the other person is created by combining the pictures with a pre-rendered 3D model of the users face.

HUD Google Glasses  These glasses have a front facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality apps.  It will also take pictures.  The spied prototype has a flash- perhaps for help at night, or maybe it was just a way to take better photos.  The camera is extremely small and likely only a few megapixels.

2.  Check out some other new technologies launched last week.  Which items do you think will significantly impact our lives?  Which ones do you personally like the best?

1.  CES 2013

  1. 1) The first pair of glasses are for video calling usage, while the second pair of glasses are used for searching different things on the web. I would have to say that the second pair of glasses would interest me the most because of the feature that you're able to search things on the web. I don't do many video calls anyway so I wouldn't find much usage in that.

    2) I found a link under CES 2013 that directed me to this place: http://www.hapilabs.com/products-hapifork.asp This fork is designed to moderate how you eat. If you eat too fast, the fork vibrates. It also measures how much is on the fork and tells you if it's too big of a bite. I think this is a fantastic technology that needs to be brought into homes and restaurants and even schools.

  2. 1. The 3d webcam headset is pretty cool. It's like Star Wars hologram communication is finally actually happening. Maybe later we'll create better space travel and go light speed across the galaxy. It would be really nice to talk to what seems like an actual face like normal.

    2. On Popsci, there's a weird orange goo stuff that they're using for packaging, and a guy wrapped it around his finger and smashed it with a hammer. His finger was fine, then. I thought that was kind of cool. Maybe they could make it bullet proof, too.

  3. 1.) The Hands-Free Videophone is used to make video calls without having to hold a phone/device up during the call. The HUD Google Glasses function more like a smartphone. The HUD Google Glasses interest me more because they do more and seem to have a better function.

2.) I think the Audi self-driving car will impact peoples lives greatly. I think it is an interesting technology that has been created. It can be helpful because there would be less accidents while driving because people will not try to multi-task while driving.

  4. 1.) I think that the Google glasses seem a lot more interesting. the HUD seems like it could be the next huge step in technology. Augmented reality is an amazing step in the right direction for mobile computing, kudos to Google.

2.) As shallow as it seems, the Innergie PocketCell Duo was my pick for new tech. being able to keep your monile devices charged without being near a wall outlet, that will impact my life every day, literally. that is a device with a lot of potential for common use.

  5. 1. The HUD glasses are for hands free smart phone computing and basically a better Siri with your eyes. The hands free video calling is for... Well... Video calling.. and not much else. So with that being said, The HUD glasses intrest me more because they actually do stuff, besides just video calling.
    2. Those links are all terrible... But I saw the so called Steam box, and that is always interesting to me(and probably most people in GenYES).

  6. 1. I think the Hands-Free Video Call Headset interests me a little more due to the fact that I often find myself on Skype with friends, and wish to do video calls with them. The other item sounds more expensive, and would look a little odd on an ordinary person.

    2. I liked the Omniphobic material which would repel liquids to the point of bouncing. could impact the way we travel through hazardous materials or even through the ocean.

  7. 1. I think I prefer the google glasses because the hud is kinda big and bulky while the google glasses are unobtrusive and slightly more stylish. Another reason is that the hud is kinda specialized while the google glasses are more universal.
    2. I think the Switch and the Omniphobic material, the Switch is cool because it is just as bright as a normal light bulb but uses leds to use less power and the last years longer. then the Omniphobic material is cool for making all of your cloths water and stain proof making them last much longer.

  8. 1. I am more interested by the google glasses. They are cooler, do a whole lot more, and look nicer. Plus, they are like a mini google search! They do have the issue of the fact that people don't know that you are recording them and that it is being broadcasted to the internet. But if you don't want people to see what your doing, then don't do it. The Hands Free Video Call Headset is less attractive, and it doesn't look new. However, they are for different things. So I suppose it's mostly everyone's opinions and what they like to do.
    2. On Popsci 2013, I am really interested by the anti-surveillance hoodie and scarf that prevent drones from tracking you. There is also a shirt with an X-ray-deflecting patch over the heart. Even a pocket that can, as long as your phones inside, hide your phone’s signal. All of these are supposed to conceal the body’s thermal signature that is picked up by the IR sensors built into several surveillance drones and cameras.

  9. 1.I prefer the Google glasses, because they look like normal glasses and the other ones do not. The other glasses are enormous and plus you do not look that cool while you wear them. The google glasses are very universal and i am really interested in them and i would love to invest into them.

    2. I love learning about Popsci, because if the guy could smash his finger with a hammer and still be fine then i think we all really need to invest in that stuff, cause we can overcome dangers easily. The material is like orange goo and when it's around something, it protects it. If we keep working with it then who knows what we can discover with that stuff.

  11. The First pair of glasses is designed o make video calls, and the second pair is designed to have interaction with the real world, with artificial entities projected onto the screen. It has a camera which could possibly help improve vision in situations where it is difficult to see.
2I found a fabric material which made somebody invisible to thermal cameras. This is very cool, and could be utilized by the military to protect our soldiers on stealth operations.
Also there is a self driving car. This could be very useful, as this could protect us as a computer will be a safer driver than a person will, because they will have complete and focussed control.

  12. 1) I think the google glasses were cooler because they have more features than the video chat glasses, they also look pretty cool aswell.

    2) On popsci 2013 i checked out temple run 2 it looks pretty cool and i read a little about it and now i want to go buy that app and try it out

  13. 1. I like the google glasses more because I think it will be more common on the market as google has more resources to get this projected finished. Also, the google glass could be used for many things even as outrageous as hacking it for use as a virtual reality videogame. The video caller looks like it will be exclusively for calls.
    2. I don't think anything I saw will change our lives drastically. The only thing I saw that might have the ability to become popular enough to change most common 1st world country lives was google glass. Mostly the stuff I found was better versions of things we already had such as Liquipel 2.0 and a better LED TV. After google glass comes out who knows what will be the next cool product. We are starting to plateau in our inventions.

  14. 1. I think they both are really cool. The google ones have style but can't do things the other one can't. It gos for the other one to it can't do things that the google one can't do. I prefer the google one. Because apparently it's like a smart phone and can go on the internet.

    2. I think the samsung galaxy camera on the gadget lab video will impact on how we take pictures and share them to family, friends, and the world. My personal favorite is the game controller with a phone screen. Thats pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. The Hands Free Video Call most interests me for the possibility of opening up opportunities in animation and communication. The Google glasses seem to be found in modern smart phones, with a few more bells, no more whistles though.

    2. Samsung's 4k TVs most interest me out of all the technologies I was able to see. The ultra-high resolution will allow for many different possibilities in graphic design, as well as simply revolutionizing the way we see tv.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. The HUD Google glasses interest me, they look like a more condensed version of Sixth-Sense, where it is completely mounted on your head and can take pictures along with other stuff. The Hand Free video is an interesting concept however i would not like to video chat with someone who wears this, it looks like an animated face because thats basically how it is. It has video of portions of your face in order to created a fully moving animated resemblance.

    2. One of the things that stood out to me while looking through the CES 2013 products was the water-proof smartphones, this will send those companies products farther ahead of all the other phones due to the fact that so many people drop their phones into the water, or leave it in the wash. I've even dropped my phone in my pool hoping it would turn back on. Its just a little thing but its something many people have been waiting for.

  17. 1. The hands free video camera is a great idea in theory so far but the way they made it is almost garbage to me because of showing your 3D face and not your real face. The second is camera is much better with real world outlooks.

    2. I really enjoy the new video game gadget with an xbox controller and mobile like a psp. The new samsung camera is a revolutionary step for cameras but yet is still too expensive in my view for people to mass consume it and can't make calls. It's like a android phone but can't make a phone call so in my view it's to expensive.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. I think both are really cool but I like the Google glasses better because on the hands free video call headset only does video calls. But on the Google glasses it does so much more than that and you can go on the internet.

    2. On Popsci there was this humanoid robot toddler named Diego-San. It's face really scared me but this technology could help advance robotics. But the thing I liked the most, also on Popsci, was a lego robot and it looked really cool.

  19. 1.the first is for vidio chating the second is for web searching. I think the google glassesn have a lot more potential tahn the other and i personlay like them a lot more not only are they more streamlined but there desing could actually do what the other glasses are desing for with some modifacation.

2.On popsci i found a link to a jacket that protects you from drone teraking. it will i beleve conceall your het signature from them making almost invisible. in the new age of warfare this could become very impoertant. Its basicly discovering how to hide your self from the most advanced weapons around.

  20. 1. I like both options because they sound cool and the person that created it has a good idea, I like the second one more because Ive studied that for years.

    2. All of them seem cool, and all Have great Ideas, so I cant really choose only to think they are really informative.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. The Google smart glasses interests me more, as rather than it just being a video call device, it's also a smart phone. The video calling glasses will probably be more affordable, however.

    2. I didn't really see anything that would radically change our lives, per-say. Sure, water proof smartphones would be nice, but we don't exactly live underwater, do we? If phones were waterproof, the only thing accomplished would be putting repair shops out of buisness.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. The Hands Free Video Call headset looks neat, but I'm more interested in the Google smart glasses. The Google smart glasses are like mobile computers, kind of like a laptop. Although the video call headset would be cool, the Google smart glasses would have a lot more uses.

    2. I found several things under Popsci 2013. The flexible, paperlike computers are pretty cool, they could replace paper itself. Also, the indestructible hard drive is amazing. It can withstand tons of damage from heat to water damage to even theft. And even one of the drive fails, the other one copies every single bit of information.

  23. 1:The device that interest me the most is the Ryno one wheel scooter. That thing is sooooooo cool. The RYNO scooter is meant to be a low speed urban transport. It’s powered by dual DC motors and has a range of 35 miles and a max speed of 25MPH.I wish I could drive that thing to school lol!

2: I like the ADATA device which is a wireless device that enables you to share your photos wirelessly with 10 different devices by plugging in an SD card into the device, which then can be wirelessly connect to any PC or Smartphone (via an App).

  24. 1. The first pair glasses are used for video call only, whereas the Google glasses Are more like a smart phone. The Google glasses provide more the practical use to society, they represents items such as the smart phone, iPad, and laptop. So in turn the Google glasses are far above the first pair

2.A refocused Sony is now hoping to recapture the public's wonder, and purchasing power, with a new quad-core smartphone, the Xperia Z. This is after another show of humility in November 2012, when it admitted that its phones can't compete with likes of the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3. The fact that this new phone is waterproof might just inspire a few wows. This new waterproof phone is the most practical and inspirational technology they came out this past week

  25. 1. I found the google glasses the most interesting as I think they have much more potential than the others which seem to be just based off of video. The google ones appear to be capable of more useful and more generally used abilities.

    2. I clicked on CES 2013 and found myself on a site that talked about Makerbot's 3d printer. I thought it was really cool as it is capable of replicating actual 3d objects. While the material that generated is not actually the same as the original, the appearance is almost identical.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1.I like the Hands Free video call because it uses 3D rendering to show 720P picture. This technology has a lot of potential for future use. As for the HUD Google Glasses look very good and very promising I'm not really surprised that its Google they have so much money its ridiculous. Google Glasses compared to the Hands Free Video Call Headset i would want the Google Glasses more practical and looks very good and is pretty much a smart phone

    2. I found the most interesting study a Harvard professor is trying to prove that neanderthals are smarter then people think. He takes bone samples and makes a Artificial DNA and mixes them with stem cells and put them in a embryo then he puts the embryo into a woman and boom a neanderthal. This could could show if they were smart or it could end horrifically they still haven't found a person to do it but they say its going to happen within this year.

  27. 1. I like that hand free video calling because it could convient when you're occupied but also make it easy to talk to people. it is probably extremely expensive though.

    2. Water proof smartphones!!!!! it would really help our generation because we are forgetful a lot of our technology is destroyed by water so that will be convient.

  30. 1. I think the HUD Google Glasses are quite interesting because they have an out-ward facing camera that gathers information about your environ ment much like a video game. They can connect to the internet over wifi or a low power bluetooth.
    2. I liked the Omniphobic material which would repel liquids to the point of bouncing. It could possibly effect the way we travel through hazardous materials or even through the ocean.

  31. 1. I really like the google glasses. I like how they act as a kind of smart phone. The google glasses have a lot of potential and thats why I like them. The navigation system on it seems really cool. The navigation system currently used is a head tilting-to scroll and click. It is very quick to learn and once the user is adept at navigation, it becomes second nature and almost indistinguishable to outside users.

    2. I think the TV's will impact out lives the most. They are making 4k super definition TV's. This is also the technology I like the most. I can tell a huge difference in standard definition to high definition TV and want to see if the difference will as great for super high definition.

  32. 1. The link for the Hud glasses was broken but the first website was not very interesting. Those asians have all kinds of technology that nobody uses. These glasses just seem way too complicated for the 2nd grade intelligence of the average American.

  33. 1) I enjoyed reading about the Hands Free Headset more because of the 3D feature it had. I would love to experience everything I do or watch in 3 dimensions instead of the 2 I see now. The Google glasses were something I decided not to read about because Google is becoming a world power and as the King I already know everything about it.

  35. 1. I like the hands free video call because it is using 3D technology in a new way that will be used way more then 3D tvs. I also like the faced that when you call some one you aren't just talking to the person.

    2. I didn't find any thing that impressed me that much and I also do not think that any of these will change our lives.

  36. 1- The hands free headset seemed to much of a burden, i preferred the Google glasses. This is more than likely because of my work on the sixth sense and because I am much more interested in computer interaction with environment than user with user.
2- The link that i found was extremely cool was the bendable unbreakable smart phone by Samsung. http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-ces-samsung-flexible-oled-display-20130110,0,5524272.story. This wasn't as much of something that will impact my life, but its something that i have been thinking about ever sense I heard of the I phone. It is also a big step in mirco chips if this is possible, and can lead to many even cooler things, I cannot wait for this.

  37. 1. The HFVC is 3D video call device that is hands free and the HUD glasses is a visual
analyzer. The "Hands Free Video Call Headset" interests me the most. It seems closer to us in
the future than the "HUD Google Glasses" does. I would much rather interacted 3D video
conversation with someone, than having a terminator style pair of high procession glasses.

    2. The Juji HS50 EXR will surely impact our lives with better, more realistic, image capturing
technology. I like this the best because it adds a new technology to our lives and we
could prosper from this achievement and make better video capturing devices in the future
    and make history.

  38. 1. The google glasses interest me much more than then the hands free video headset, they seem like they could completely change the way we interact with the internet as well as make it much more convenient.

    2. One of the most significant things i found was that scientist are now able to bio-engineer mice so that they don't feel the cold, this could give us the ability to develop rescue animals that don't shy away from the elements and therefore become more successful at what they do. This seem to be one of the coolest in my opinion.

  39. 1.I like the google glasses a lot more than the hands free video headset thing. I was intrested with the 3D part of the hands free headset, but it also would seem like a problem in some ways. The HUD google glasses can do alot more than the hands free headset, thats why it intrests me alot more.

2.Under Popsci, there is this orange gel used for packing and it is really strong. A guy smashed his hand and didnt even feel it.

  40. 1. I think the google glasses are cool. They have a front facing camera, a heads up display on one side of the computer, and uses the navigation device as a way to use the mouse.

    2. Science has really grown. We can see if a person is suicidal just by taking a blood test. The question is if you can stop people from killing themselves with this test. The Australians are trying to find quinolic acid in the blood.

  41. 1) I think that the HUD Glasses that have the Front camera and that it takes pictures is really cool. And how you can use them to navigate through stuff.

    2) I thought that the blood test to show who is suicidal or not was fascinating because they can stop people from killing them selves. Maybe they could find away to cure cancer and other deadly stuff.

  42. 1. The google glasses are amazing. Having the access to a HUD of information would make life so much easier.

    2. The quadracopter was sick! The technology implemented in it was something I had no Idea could be done. The minute the pole landed on the copter, the technology began to study the dynamics of the pole then balance it automatically!!! THATS CRAZY!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1.The HUD google glasses are really cool. I could think of million ways to use them form millitary applications like maps or a camera to replace helmet cams.

2.I liked the self driving car. it will give blind people more freedom than they have and will help with long road tripps so people won't fall asleep at the wheel and get in car acsedents.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1. I thought the google glasses were really cool but they looked they were just a more convenient sixth sense thing. A lot of people are coming up with different devices that have the same function.

    2. The blood sample thing caught my eye. Telling if someone is suicidal by reading their blood is pretty amazing and could be helpful but it also be an invasion of privacy. Even so that invasion could be worth it to save someone's life.

  45. 1. in my opinion the hands free glasses are just for phone calls that's not really thinking in the future but the hud glasses are taking a huge step in advanced technology there interest me 1000 times more then the hands free ones and they also have a more slim and sleek design.

2.i'm really interested in the Biometric scan instead of credit card because i am sick and tired of people hacking into banks and peoples credit cards so many people's money have been taken from them and this is going to wipe all that away.

  46. 1.) I personally prefer the google goggles because they are better looking at seem easier to use than the "Hands free glasses". It's all a matter of appealing to the lowest common denominator, so if it looks good, people will buy it (iPhone)

2.) I don't think that any technologies released recently will drastically impact our society or the way we live. Unless of course the hover-car is released this week.
