Social Networking in School

What if the administrators of our school district unblocked all the social networking sites to everyone at school?

Read the questions below, but before you answer, do a little research, read through a few of the links and cite your references.  Consider all the people at school involved:  Students, teachers and administrators.

2.  What could be the bad effects or dangers of this decision?

3.   How could teachers use social networking in their classrooms?
(YOU are GenYES be creative!)

4.  Simple Yes or no!  (Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages to open up social networking?)

  1. 1.) I believe that if we opened up all the social media sites, then there wouldn't really be any advantages or disadvantages. Social media is nice, and having it at school is nice, but the only benefit I can see from opening up social media, is giving children with no internet at home, the ability to access social media.

2.) There are really no downsides to this potential decision, as I said above.

3.) well, for instance, I am in band, and on facebook, there is a band group page where anyone can post about questions or just general updates, so I could see this applying to other electives, or just other classes.

4.) I believe that the single advantage outweighs the lack of disadvantages. So, in short, I believe that PVUSD should bring back social media.

    P.S. FIRST!!!

  2. Chris,

Good thoughts and cool that you are first. Your first statement though is confusing. Yes there are advantages and disadvantages to anything that administratively affects thousands of people. So while it's apparent you are for this idea, you need to think a little deeper here. If this issue was as simple as you portray, why is it banned? READ through some of the article links or RESEARCH a bit on your own. Consider the perspectives of everyone involved. Teachers. Elementary kids. The bosses who must handle potential problems. What are those problems? Dig deeper and discover more about this issue and cite a comment, or two, that you read and discuss your views.

  3. 1) An advantage of having a social networking website at school would be that we could teach parents and teachers how to use it. Our CTSO representatives need at least one social networking website that can be shown to the community. Facebook is becoming the most used website in history, so why block it? Teaching people how to use it seems like a great option that we should consider trying. Now, this does NOT mean all social networking websites need to be opened. I'm referring to Facebook alone because of a possible learning opportunity.

    2) One danger I could foresee occurring would be the students becoming distracted at school, and possibly ditching class to use Facebook. If the district approves the offer, I feel only the Compass Lab should have this capability.

    3) Social media has no relevance in classrooms. Students would get distracted and chat with one another when assigned computers. Giving the rest of the school access to social networks is a BAD idea.

    4) Yes.

  4. 1) I think that the advantages of having FaceBook opened would be that it's easier to tell kids what they have to do for a project because veryone checks their FaceBook and no one really checks their PvLearners. I know this is what I have done in the past and this way the student can't deny getting what he was told to do.

    2) I think that their really aren't any disadvantages.

    3) I think that teachers could use it to make an event for their stuendts and people could join maybe for a discussion or something and that way the homework would actually be fun and meaningful.

    4) Yes, I do

  5. 1. One of the advantages to opening up social networking is that communicating with others and could introduce more teacher student interaction.
    2. A negative side effect could be that it may distract students from work if not controlled and directed.
    3. A possible application of social networking in the classroom could be used to keeping track of projects and assignments or to be use as a collaborative help on assignments.
    4. Personally I think that the potential disadvantages out weigh the advantages. But the results from the The Case For Social Media in Schools does have recorded success from such endeavors, so it may be worthwhile to try anyways.

  6. 1. The best benefit I can see for opening social networking sites in schools is that teachers an twitter or post on face book upcoming assignments. Kids check their social networking sites more than their school assignment calendar.
    2. The down side to this argument is that it could be a big distraction for kids in class.
    3. Like I said in the first response, teachers can use it to keep their students up to date on school events.
    4. YES

  7. 1. I think that opening up all the social networking sites would help keep everyone connected. Cyber bulling might become more promenant and people would defiantly be on their phones or ipods more often and attention in class probably wouldn't be as good without.

    2. Cyber bulling and maybe harassment have a chance to increase.

    3. Teachers would have better succes with posting homework and alerting their students about tests and even getting in touch with students to help them better understand the subject.

    4. Yes I do.

  8. 1. I feel like the only advantage would for student and teachers to connect on a personal level... however the advantages are slim
    2. This is the part of the argument doesnt make sense because the disadvantages do are not there do to the fact that the amount of distractions of the kids at school are already there and social networks wont impact the school life that much
    3. the teachers can connect with there students on a personal level and in turn be able to teach them better
    4. yes...

  9. 1. I think that there are few, if any, advantages to opening all social networking sites. In the case of sites like facebook and twitter there is no point to having them at school and the dangers they present outweigh the benefits. However there are sites like pvlearners that allow safe communication between teachers and students and between students and other students, as well as providing a place for documents and presentations to be stored online and shared between them.
    2. Social networking sites are the perfect environments for bullies. It makes it so the kid being bullied can no longer escape from the bullying. If these sites were allowed at school there would also be that many more ways for students to get distracted and disregard their work.
    3. Social networking sites could be used in classrooms to help teach and share ideas but there are better ways to achieve the same objectives, such as pvlearners.
    4. No, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and there are much better alternatives to opening up social networking sites.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. The main advantages that anyone could make an argument for is that social media sites are great communication tools. However, how does facebook offer any educational value? We are at school and we are around anyone we need to get a hold of. And yes it is a given that kids check their facebook more then say their pvlearners so it would be a good reminder system. But that's just allowing kids to use their facebook for that purpose, which they wouldn't.

    2. I can guarantee that students would get distracted during library time and they would not be doing their work. There are reasons that these social media sites have been blocked and I don't think we should change that now. Why not avoid all of the problems and just leave things the way they are.

    3. Posting homework, getting in touch with students, group discussions, etc. These are all ways the teachers could utilize social media sites but realistically, would this work? In a perfect world. This question does not really relate to these social media sites NEEDING to be un blocked because that is why we have pvlearners and other safe sites. The connotation that would go with our school using Facebook is also a factor to take into consideration.

    4. Disadvantages outweigh advantages

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1.) it would allow for great communication in social groups between students and teachers. It would be great for keeping everyone connected and the teacher could post reminders about homeworks and what not.

2.) bullying and sexual situations might occur

3.) Teachers would be able to post homework or notes for extra review and even have some assignments linked thru it.

    4.) yessss

2.) A teacher and student might have an inappropriate relationship, this can vary from words to setting up a future situation. Cyber bullying also can occur with student making fun of another student to where everyone can see.

3.) Teachers could have discussion posts or socratic seminars where students would be able to participate within the social network with each other. TEachers could also post assignments and notes from that day of class to help students absorb it more or for easy home access for students that did not attend school that day.

  12. 1. There are no advantages in unblocking social media websites at school. Teachers could interact with students, but they can already do that with pvlearners. If the district is worried about the types of interactions that will go on between teachers and students, blocking the website at school will not prevent such interactions from going on outside of school. Also, with smartphones increasing in popularity, everybody has social networking at their fingertips if they wish do use them at school. The only disadvantage is that the school becomes responsible for what goes on on these social media websites during school hours.

    2. The bad side of the social media websites open at school is no different than the general use, except that whatever is to happen on these websites during/at school is the schools responsibility to deal with. The same type of policy goes for cell phones. If students are harassing each other via text message, then the school gets involved. Both Facebook, and phones, allow students to contact teachers without supervision of the district.

    3. There is nothing that teachers could use social media for that pvleaners does not already offer. Teachers could make a Facebook page with homework information, or keys, but they can already do this through google. Every teacher can make a website through pvlearners with google to have whatever they want on it.

    2. Like i said it can lead to Hacks, Cyber Bullying, and Viruses. But the Viruses isnt much of a concern than the other two.

  15. 1. I feel like it is pointless to block these sites, people say bullying will happen if they unblock the sites but wouldn't they just be able to get online once they get home? The school should only be responsible for censoring the content, Such as pornographic sites. Getting on Facebook will not give you a virus, simple stuff

    2. I see the only downside to this is that students that use computers during their class might wander off to social media sites. People say a risk would be Hackers or Viruses but they aren't just in social media. Viruses can come from any website or any link or download. As i see it the only disadvantage to unblocking the sites is students not paying attention.

    3. For this question i'll use Ms. K and GenYES as an example. Ms K. could create a twitter for SMHS Genyes to share pictures and tweet about the cool things we are doing here, or a facebook page to notify users of homework or information they might need.

Facebook is a great tool for a Potential employers, they use it to see what type of person. So why not use it for good and make a page for your class so that you can upload cool stuff (much like our GenYES websites). PvLearners is a great tool for the classroom, however Employers have been/are using Facebook for employing people so why not make it easier for them to see your stuff? students are much more likely to post stuff to a school class page during school than when they are at home. If students had to use Facebook for homework then they would do faster and without grumbling because students don't see Facebook as a tool for homework.

  16. 1. If we were to open up all the social media sites, we could open accounts for the school's organizations on those sites and maintain them on campus. It could also be handy for opening shortlinks that are provided by news sites on twitter or through other sites.

    2. The only main bad affect I can think about is abuse of the openness of the sites by students. It has the potential to slow productivity, but that doesn't mean that it WILL slow productivity.

    3. Teachers could use Facebook as a way for students to give feedback into a class group or to ask each other about assignments because, let's face it: students don't want to use PVLearners, and they don't check them on a daily basis.

    4. Yes.

  17. 1. I think that there would definitely be disadvantages not so much advantages the disadvantages are no body would do anything but on the social websites and not do anything productive but playing around not doing work.

    2. No work would be done stuff would be done but not right away.

    3. They could talk to other teachers not the students because the students would chat with the teachers.

    4. No we should not open up the social networking

  18. 1. Some advantages of opening social networking to a school, is the fact that it would make it much easier for teachers to help students with homework, and to make it easier for kids to learn lessons they missed or get homework that they missed. We could also find a social network that has the ability to use video calling of a sort, if a student is not in a class, so that they could watch the lesson as it is actually happening, and the teacher could record it and post it for students to watch again.
    2. Some dangers of course are the fact that cyber bullying could run rampant if it went unmonitored, but we could stop that by having a script or something that saved all of the conversations that admins and some trusted people could look over if something happened.
    3. Well I sort of answered this in number one, but teachers could use it to give students homework, post lessons that students missed, and even have discussion pages to help struggling students with lessons, and even help students that just want some extra help.
    4. YES :)

  19. 1. To be honest I don't think there is advantages or disadvantages to opening social media at school. If people were worried that there would be more bullying if we opened it up couldn't kids just go on it at home.

    2. One of the only bad effects I can see in this is being disrupted in class but that's only if your in a computer class such as this one genyes or if you have a computer in your class. Even then I dont think it would change that much because kids can still access facebook through there phones without the schools wifi.

    3. Teachers could create groups on facebook there students can follow where it's a forum with there assignments, homework, and e.t.c.

  21. 1 Opening up social networking opens up communication. By using the same network we use to communicate for fun at home to communicate for education in school, it blends them together so on our free time outside of school we capable of learning easier.

2 A big downside is the distractions it could bring. But there would be rules about when it could be used in class and whatnot, eliminating this problem.

3Teachers can post lessons, links to outside information, and be able to help share one question by one student for the whole class. It opens communication for easier learning by students.

  22. 1. The advantages of social sites is to connect and meet a lot of other people, well the site Online Social Networking to connect with people with the same goals and interests. Social sites like Face Book can also help teens go into relationships. Another great use the site says it can even help you
get a job! Employers look for employes over social sites like Face Book.

    2. The Disadvantages would be the temptation to go on during class, So my idea is to block face book on class time, and unblock it during before school, after school, and at lunch.

    3. Teachers could use face book to post homework and upcoming tests. Most of the teens don't check the teacher's website they go on face book. So teachers should post homework and tests.

  23. 1. The advantages of opening up social media sites at school would be that students would form closer groups, get information on assignments or projects, and to just be social with their other friends. It would also allow students to communicate with each other out of school as well as to keep school interesting to them as well.

    2. The disadvantages of social would be the ability of students to access Facebook or other social media sites during school time, taking away from their learning time and work ethic.

    3. There are a couple of ways that teachers could use social media in the classroom. The most effective use would probably to organize the class schedule and help tell the students what homework is due.

    4. No.

  24. 1. Social media can provide well formed social groups, direct communication between a class outside of school, and the better organization of assignments and homework in a single area. Social media is also a common request of students and good serve to lighten the mood of students.

    2. The obvious danger of social media is a great detriment to focus and workflow. This decision could give students a large distraction which may take away from normal academic activities.

    3. Teachers could have to ability to organize their work such as assignment information, homework schedules, and forums for collaboration between students.

  25. 1.) The benefits would be that everyone could become more social with others and get to know every one better at the school therefor more friends would be made and a kinder environment would be made form opening the the social network.

2.) The down side to this idea would have to be viruses hackers and HUGE distraction to all student with smart phones or are on a computer doing work. Also a student can get a teacher fired if he or she knew how to.

3.) some of the ideas i could come up with would be that teachers could get to know their students better and could collaborate with student about work and homework instantly

  26. 1 / 2. I can't think of any advantages or disadvantages to opening up the social networking sites to Shadow Mountain because even when they were restricted before, there was a way to bypass the Mcafee site blocker by typing in https:// before any URL, and it wouldn't block it. The district fixed that now, but nothing has really changed, other than that kids can't use the computers to access facebook anymore. But even then, they can still use their phone to go on it somehow. I know someone who uses an iphone to go on facebook all the time anyway. The overall point is, nothing is going to change that drastically because even if PVUSD bans the social networking sites from their own wi-fi, students still have ways to get around it and use them anyway. This answers question 2 as well.

    3. Facebook and other social networking sites don’t have any features that could help teachers teach students that can’t be done with PvLeaners. They can communicate through e-mail, make their own sites with calenders that display the assignments, and have their own blogs that students post answers on if that was something they wanted to do.

    4. No

  27. 1. Opening up our social networks would be very benificial and would open up some good advantages for us by interfering education into the Social Networks, because kids could get a chance to have one on one chats that can help certain areas that the students are struggling with in the classroom. If you forget an assignment then it could be posted on there and easy for students to find.
2.Some dangers to think about are, students could get very distracted with it in class and would be on their iphones and ipods the whole time teaching is taking place.Students could go on different websites while their teachers think they are doing what they should be doing.
3.Teachers could use this in their classrooms by having one on one sessions with their students. Power points and projects could also be used through Social Networking by creating a page about whatever you are working on. This Could very much open a lot of different opportunities for teachers.

  28. 1. The advantages of letting the schools open up social networking is that you are able to have students create pages for there classes and invite people who have the same teacher and they can help each other out if they need help or they can post pictures of the homework for others to check if they got it right.

    2. Some bad effects are students can get distracted and go on facebook when they get bored during class, or they can add some random pedo and it'd just be sketchy.

    3. They could use social networking back to question number one, they can use it to make pages and update there page daily. They can post pictures of the homework and tell them the due dates and it'd be a lot easier knowing that teens (such as I) go on facebook daily.

  29. 1. Opening up social networking during school hours would have both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that teachers and students would have better communications at lunch. It would be better than having to email someone because emails take much longer and are more complicated

    2. But the disadvantages would be that students would take advantage of the social networking and communicate with other students during classtime being a distraction to everyone around that person who is using the social networking.

    3. They could use social networking in and out of the classroom in good ways such as, they could make forums to put up for collaberation between students, teachers could create groups on facebook and post things like, "assignments are due tomorrow!!" to inform students when their work is due, they could post links to their website, the calander for the class, etc.

    4. Yes!

  30. 1. An advantage to having social networks at school could be like if a student had a question about a certain thing in class or about his homework he could ask his teacher from home and get his work done. A benefit of this is that you can have one on one chats with your teacher.

    2. The bad side about having a social network at school is maybe the teacher and the student message each other sexual messages to each other.

3.So that the teacher can share files through a social networkl that has to do with the class.

    4.Yes.

  31. 1. I feel that there isn't that many advantages to open up the social networks again. You could chat with your friends personally with out anybody knowing, and maybe get information on homework, but that is pretty much it.

    2. In my opinion, there is more disadvantages than advantages. Social networks could be a big distraction in class because of people can be on there smartphones. There could also be sexual encounters with students and teachers.

3.Teachers can share videos and files that are related to the subject.

  32. 1. i think having a social network in school is an advantage due to students being able to talk to teachers easier and not having to be shy of talking in front of the class.

3.teacher can transmit assignments and projects.

  33. 1. I could see some of the benefits of opening up social networking sites, such as the first article. The first article above stated that a teacher used social networking sites to her advantage to help the kids and it actually worked! I totally understand this because if a student is having trouble in a class then they can help and feed back using social networking sites and having people help them. Some teacher could post assignments and such online, like how us GenYES students do when we do our blog home works and such. I know that will help me a lot because when a teacher hands out home work, I usually forget all about it by the time I get home and will only remember by coincidence or wont remember to do the home work at all. Also, it could be beneficial by having the ability of talking to your teacher even when you are not with them, you can ask them a question from anywhere and they will be able to answer, maybe even work it out on paper and post a picture of it on the site so you can see how something is done. In the third link above, it says some more way that social network sites can be useful. Some classes may even be able to use social network to teach something in their classes by being able to contact and converse with people who hold more and detailed information on certain topics that they are learning in class. Such as a college professor who holds knowledge on a subject and/or even contacting and author of a relevant book in class rooms. Another big reason why it could help is that some students are very shy and don't have the confidence to approach teachers in person with questions that they may have, so doing over a social networking site may be able to help them get past that face to face contact and ask a teacher questions. Also, if you saw that someone has already asked them a question then the answer would already be there for you to look at and for all other students to look at get their questions answered as well. Also, I think that cyber bullying would go way down, because teachers and administration would be able to see if someone is saying mean things about someone and confront the cyber bully.

    2. A bad affect of this could be that it would be a distraction in the class rooms. For example, when a teacher is giving a important lesson that the student should really be listening to, and the student is distracted by a social network site and they don't listen to the important lesson that the teacher is giving. Although, my thought process is that prohibition of the social network sites are like prohibition of alcohol. While it was not allowed, people would sneak around and drink, then when it was legalized no one really care for it as much anymore. I feel like if we let students use social network sites then they wont really use them much in the classrooms anymore because they know once they have free time in a class room then they can go straight to it with out the teachers or administration getting on them about not using the site. A disadvantage I'm sure that people will bring up are that students and teacher have be having an inappropriate conversations. The teachers just need to smart enough to ONLY talk to students using posts. For example, when someone posts on facebook then everyone has view to that post and the comments to that post. So if a student tries to accuse of a teacher doing something or saying something wrong, people who have viewed that post would be able to tell if this accusation was true or not. Even if they printed up a photoshoped copy of the conversation, the original post is still there to be seen by everyone.

    3. I already pretty much answered this question in the first question answer.

  34. 1. my opinion in opining all social sites is. i think it would be a terrible idea because three reason 1 there will be major distractions 2 face book twitter and other sites would give students the chance to go and check there wall and stuff and somethings they could have may not be appropriate for school 3 if student had the chance to go on these site they would never get any work done because all they would want to do is to check theere status and stuff.

2.it can be very distracting and could have students not doing there work because of these sites

3.it could be distracting to student in the media center when they are suppose to be researching or working on an important project instead they are on face book or twitter checking there status and may be seeing inappropriate things like i said before

  35. 1) There may be many advantages to having social networking brought into schools. Things like Twitter, to look for updates on projects or homework. would be beneficial, but that would cause Facebook to be allowed as well. That would not be a good idea because people would not use it for educational purposes. Another advantageous site would be Glogster. Making virtual posters with more options than making posters with just paper? That could be very awesome for students to unleash their creative side and make their projects/presentations extremely interesting.

    2) These sites would be a distraction to students. In my opinion, only Glogster and to a certain degree Twitter would be beneficial to the education of students in the PV District. Facebook and Tumblr would be distracting; many students would want to check their wall instead of work on making their education matter in life.

    3) Well, for Glogster, teachers could have students make an interesting poster about that project they're working on, or make a poster that can be printed out and copied for an event they have. However, it would definitely be difficult to accomplish because people would mistreat the program.

    4) I would say no to most of the social networking sites.

  36. 1. There are a few advantages of opening all the social network sites. One advantage is students would be more willing to do their home work because it's online. It also would be saving more paper because more work could be on a website, like the blog. The first article, case for social media in school, was about a school that tried using the social network sites and it turned out really good.

    2. Some disadvantages of opening all the social network sites are that people would be too distracted to pay attention in class if Facebook was open to them and they used their phones to constantly go on the social network sites. Also there would be more people being bullied through a social network site. I think we should try opening the social network sites for awhile and see how it goes. But it might end up horrible.

    3. Teachers could work with their students online through a social network site to improve the students work, home work, productivity, and grades.

  37. 1. There are quite a few advantages to social networking sties. A great example is, well, this blog. It serves as both homework and in-class work, as well as a place where we can hear other's opinions on technology related articles. As well as this, it'd be great for group projects, as it would add another level of collaboration.

    2. There are just as many disadvantages as there are advantages. Some students aren't allowed on sites such as Facebook, making it complicated for the Teachers to come up with alternative assignments for those students. Other disadvantages are the safety concerns, as well as the ability to get distracted.

    3. Teachers and Students could work together online, they could be more productive and work in groups outside of school. However, this is all already possible through PvLearners.

    4. Just as many disadvantages as there are advantages, it most likely wouldn't change much anyway, so I'll vote Yes.

  38. 1. a major advantage would be the ability for teachers to post assignments on there walls but even better what about posting videos of lectures and things students should take notes on. another advantage would be the ability for students to colaberate and study thrue the Facebook messenger on homework letting there peers help them find the corect answer to a problem or assignment.

2.the dangers would be students missusing it and posting things like test anwers and alander aginst other students and teachers in the school.

    3. they could bost links to websites on there wall or give notes out in the form of wall post they could even have sudents answering there in class questions ojn their wall or homework could even just be posted to there wall for grading

  39. 1.) Opening up social networking sites at school can have many advantages. Students can use the social networking sites to keep in touch with other students while doing group projects. Teachers can use it for assignments, like updating the students on when the assignments are due or if there are any changes to the assigments then the teachers can post updates for the kids to see. Social networking can also be used for clubs. Clubs can update schedule information and advertise for that club. Social networking can also be used for the school itself. If there is a half day or a break coming up then the school can post a reminder about it on the site so the kids will not forget.
2.) Bad effects could be the obvious of cyber bulling. But it can also be a student and teacher communicating and if the student were to get angry at the teacher he can claim the teacher did or said bad things.
3.) Teachers can use social networking in the classroom to do prjects and assignments. For example if a teacher wanted to give the students question for an assignment they could display the questions through social networking. Also a teacher could display websites for the students to use for extra help or for research. If a student were absent then they could just go onto the social networking site theur teacher uses and get the assignments and use the sites displayed for extra help.

  40. 1. allowing social networks at school could help students with mostly tutoring, if you can not find a tutor at school, why not try online.

2 some bad effects would be, goofing off. Like taking pictures, chatting randomly all day, video chats, updating your stats, just so much stuff that could keep you off task and would possibly effect your learning.

    3. Teachers, they could use social networking sites for updating there stats, news for projects or homework, due dates. Just so much stuff. For example, if our teacher updated her stats for twitter, she could say: Homeworking assignment, the page number due date etc.

  41. 1:Social media is beyond great! I believe it is critical that social media is allowed in schools as it presents a world of opportunities that far outweigh the risks if it is implemented safely and properly. Social media has become far too integrated into daily life on a global basis; failing to incorporate it into schools would do our children a disservice.

2: Their are many disadvantages to having social media in schools. To me the main problems are, less socializing for kids in person. Many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media specifically and the web in general to provide answers. That means a reduced focus on learning and retaining information.

3: Facebook and Twitter for out-of-class communications is amazing. Students can get in touch with teachers for questions, it gives them a space where they know that their teachers is just a tweet or wall post away!

  42. 1) Social networks are a good thing to have. If they unblocked them in schools they would have to be used properly for school, sometimes for fun, and could make group projects way easier.

2)The only disadvantage is kids using them during class but i mean its not that big of a problem if you dont have kids using facebook they are texting and things like that so i mean its a never ending loop.

3)having a twitter where teachers could ask students things or vice versa would be good because if could be sort of like the blog for this class and a question asking place.

    4)Yeahh

  43. 1. For the advantages you could talk to other people around school such as teachers not much better than Pvlearners but is a little bit

    2. Its just the privacy issue with creepy people such as pedos but none of that would happen if you put on that only your friends see your profile then that would be fine plus your Profile page is all encrypted with 128 bit encryption and people would miss use them in class

    3. um they could create pages for certain subjects in there classroom and have a open discussion with all the people in the class as homework

  44. 1. The advantages would be that basically everyone has it where ever they are. It is already in the hands of all the students. All students have the phone app and can reach Facebook from anywhere. Facebook is a one-stop shop or supermarket for imparting blogging, media, calendaring, communicating, sharing ideas or information and others. Facebook can provide “Cooperative Extension” abilities or capabilities to work together and construct our networks in a single place by giving one place without difficulty, imparting ideas or information and discuss subject or topics of interest.

    2. The downside of social apparatus or tools, like Facebook and MySpace are imparting too many ideas or information could turn into trouble or problem so impart only what are at ease with sharing.

    3. In a history class we could use facebooks popular "timeline" feature to learn about the life of a famous person from history, or country.

  45. 1- For most sites, opening up social media sites is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. If sites were open, such as twitter, it would be easy for teachers just to tweet there homework assignments so students can have a wall full of homework and humor tweets in the same place. The same thing can be done via Facebook. It will also be a great tool to use for online help, and it can be a place were a student feels safe rather then monitored by the district. A counter argument i am going to bring up is teachers interacting with students. This can be fixed by doing what company's have been doing for a few years now, teachers giving out their passwords so they can be monitored if their is any rumor about them and a student.

2- There are quite a bit of downsides to having the social media network sites open to the school. One thing that has to be kept in mind is chatting. People are most likely going to chat during the school day. But to counter that, the same thing happens on pv-learners with kids instant messaging each other during class. Another counter piece that will be addressed is teachers interacting with students. This interaction can be monitored as I stated before.

3- One way I see this being EXTREMELY helpful is it being used by teachers to broadcast the homework. For example, in Social Studies, if my teacher would broadcast the due date of each assignment daily, and it was on my feed, it would be so helpful and would play a large role in me organizing my school work.

  46. 1. Students would be happier,, more well connected and also make it easier for students to organize projects and and school work.

    2. Obviously it would be an issue if a student forgot to log out and another student "Hacked" them, and there's the obvious elephant in the room, cyber bullying would possibly occur but this will happen weather students have access to these sites at school or not.

    3. quick updates could be sent out via twitter (use of a twitter for the class not the teacher) and have students use facebook/ skype group chat to coordinate assignments and such.

    4. as much good as it could do, No, it's another distraction in the learning environment.

  47. 1. Unlike most students I am not a fan of Facebook, however there some huge advantages, for example you could use social media to make it much more convenient for communication between teachers/professors and their students.

    2. Their are quite a few disadvantages to using social media in schools, just about every reason that a computer is dangerous in the first place, it distracts you, you can get bullied, and there's no way of controlling what you look up.

3.There are many cool uses, one would be using facebook to share the page to homework or links to get reading assignments for absent students.
