This is perfect timing for this student's entry, considering this weeks recent news and events.
The 'people of the Internet' voiced opinions loud and clear about SOPA and PIPA.
Do you have the total picture?
Read through ALL 5 SHORT articles below before commenting.
Find information on your own, to support your thinking.

(OK.. the wiki is not short but you get the idea pretty quick)

1. What are bills like SOPA and PIPA trying to accomplish?
2. What is good about all this?
3. What is bad about all this?
4. What are your solutions?

31 comments:

  1. 1. SOPA and PIPA are both trying to eliminate piracy of movies, music, video games, and anything that can be posted on the internet.
    2. If the act passes, then artists and video game publishers will stop losing money through online piracy, and will be able to produce more songs, games, and other content.
    3. Many people (including myself) who aren't able to afford music and games, will be forced to do so. Also, the internet will be a more boring place to be, forcing many blogs and other websites to be taken down, if they even THINK about using another person's content without permission. Even if I run a website and one of my users posts a picture of Pikachu from Pokemon, then I get punished for it and MY website gets taken down. Anybody who pirates a song or picture will have to pay $150,000. Yeah, good luck collecting that.
    4. I don't really have any solutions, but piracy is illegal anyway, why not just scour the net for any major piracy sites and shut them down, not shut me down for posting a comic on my tumblr.

  2. 1.) The are trying to get rid of illegal downloads, such as music, videos and lots of other things.

2.) The whole point of the act is to generate more profit for the companies that are making this music by stopping people getting it for free.

3). The internet is going to be come a battle field of avoiding punishment, it would be incredibly easy for someone to just bomb websites with illegal photos to take them down. It will be hard to think through everything we are doing, but if we mess up we could have to pay a HUGE fine.

4). You can not stop piracy, there are always people in the world that will work around it, i think this law is being to harsh because it not only stops the criminals, but it limits what all of us post just for fun. The only way i can think of a solution is if we had some way to stop the music and videos from being released.

    1. Yikes! Don't stop the music!! (Isn't that a song?)

  3. 1) SOPA and PIPA are presented as trying to control the illegal downloads from foreign websites. The government can effectively force ISP's to stop the viewing of websites. Although, a lot of major corporations are in on it and have been excluded: Go Daddy is one example.

    2) Companies can make more profit, and they get to control the internet, something they haven't been able to do before.

    3) Companies get to control the internet, something they haven't been able to do before.

    4) If a person pirates a game the company doesn't lose any more. Pirating isn't equivalent to stealing; they are completely separate ideas. We went through this whole idea of piracy _every single time_ a new product comes out - Cassettes, DVD's, CD's, VHS, the internet - and guess what? The movie sector is doing better than ever. What's the best way to defeat pirates? Offer a better service -- and you know what Apple and Steam/Valve have offered such services. Many former pirates are now loyal customers who buy all their games. Even as pirates, their is an ethical code that says you should support the developers who make the games for we know without them there would be nothing to play.

You can't simply say that pirating is killing the businesses -- for what is really happening is that small time movies and small time gamers are now making excellent games and don't need multi-million dollar budgets to make an AAA movie or game. I think people are right in their idea that pirating is wrong, but many times people who torrent games or music will buy them later on because the service those companies provide is better than the pirates, and the pirates have no incentive to offer better service for they receive no money. Many times people will download a game and then play it as a demo. Why would I want to pay $60 for a bad game that I don't want to play? Thats the companies fault. Many games who get pirates actually have a larger sale because of pirates. People try it out and then decide they like it and pay for it.

Offer better services, lower prices, compete with other companies, don't compete with your customers.

    1. A demo or trailer is vastly different than having the whole product. It is often a good indicator of the essence of the product. Once you have the whole thing via pirating or illegal downloading there is no need to buy it. I understand your thinking that sometimes it does happen, people buy the original copy, but not very often. Good thoughts..

  4. 1. There trying to shut down the internet because people get games movies ect. and upload them to the internet which i think is awesome, but businesses are getting mad because there not getting money off of people that download it off the internet though there making a lot of money anyway.

    2. Government just rakes in more money to control us

    3. Its bad because the government is going to start hiding sites you can download illegal games movies ect. from like MegaUpload Utorrent ect.

    4. I think people should stop trying to fix this by putting up SOPA and PIPA, because people are going to find ways to avoid it/work around it.

  5. They are trying to limit what we can do on the internet if anything. They are trying to stop people from uploading videos, music, games, software (just about everything you can imagine) etc... The government is getting mad at people that are doing this because the artists or who ever created them aren't getting paid like they use to when all people knew how to get music would be via iTunes.

Bad: Government is starting to shut down and limit what people are doing on the internet and also they are shutting down major uploading sites such as Megaupload, Limewire, Utorrent, etc...

Good: I can't think of a good, but it's just going to make people find ways around them and then eventually people will know and then SOPA and PIPA will be useless.

  6. 1. SOPA and PIPA are trying to end piracy on the internet of music, movies, video games, software, etc.
    2. Good: less pirating
    3. Bad: the internet is controlled, which is not supposed to happen. People would be more clever in their pirating which could be bad for the common man.
    4. Nothing substantial, but, piracy will happen even if SOPA and PIPA pass, so there is no reason to try and regulate it.

    1. Where's the solution for #4... ?

  7. 1. These bills are trying to get rid of online pirating and limit the ways that people illegally download things such as music and basically everything accessible by the internet. They want to also limit internet and prohibit the publics downloads.

2./3. The good thing about all of this is that with these bills, people will stop illegally downloading their entertainment, therefore, this is all in all a good thing for companies. However, for the general public, people will have to find new ways to pirate things and that means an angry public. People have become so independent on the internet that if something like this were to happen, it would be a mess.

    4. I think that there are few solutions to this type of problem because it's been around for so long, people will always find ways around the rules and we can't really stop that from happening. They should have tried this a while ago before it got out of control. Plus, I really don't find anything wrong with what the bills are trying to pass so I think they should just forget trying to pass them.

  8. 1.) SOPA is trying to stop piracy of movies, music, and articles. PIPA I'm pretty sure is doing the same but it also censors intolerable actions, like it said on the third article, a 14 year old girl singing "Sexy And I Know It".

2.) The benefit of this is that websites with the original music or articles won't lose money from having their content stolen and posted on a better site. The issue with video games is if a huge amount of people get a pirated version of a game the company loses money and won't be able to create a new game. That would tick me off if the company didn't have the money to create a sequel to a good game.

3.) As I read on the third article the person's opinion said that if the SOPA and PIPA thing gets out of control you would have to go through millions of web pages to make sure that what you wrote was not pirating someones idea. I think that's a bit too far. Mrs. Kovesdy as you know I am writing a story but if I posted it on a website that I would make I would NOT go through so many online sites JUST to make sure that my story isn't ripping someone off.

4.) Uh this is way too out of control. I only see 2 options, by either the pirating getting worse then take extreme action OR tighten down on the rules on the internet now but in the future people would complain about no freedom to post just one pic. Wow this is just like a zombie OUTBREAK but with online pirating spreading instead. I think it's too late, it's at the point where everybody just found out that "SOMETHING IS GOING DOWN" and they are struggling to stay on the same page because they didn't think it was a big issue. Ps sorry I got in late.

  9. 1)SOPA and PIPA are trying to stop piracy(illegal downloading of movies, music , Video games, ect) and if you break a copyright on a website the can censor it and fine you/give you jail time
2)i dont see much good from it i mean it will help the producers make more but how much more do they need they already have soo much revenue
    3) The internet will be terrible no more youtube for music or video game montages and things like that and you could possibly get fined or jailed for the smallest things which really makes no sense and the bills should be done
    4) There really isnt anyway to stop piracy really the bills take stopping piracy overboard and there is no real way to stop it it will happen no matter what i think they should just not care about the few hundred people getting it illegal because they have millions actually paying for it

  10. 1. sopa and pipa are both trying to stop online piracy.
    2. they ar beneficial in letting people post things without having there ideas stolen and help musicians and such earn the money they deserve for there work.
    3. this is the question of a slippery slope. if they are allowed to pass this bill and censure the internet then what is to stop them from doing the same thing to the news and other outlets for expression.
    4. I dont think you can stop piracy the only way to cut it down would be to add more penaltys to it and that wouldn't really work out either so I dont think that there is a solution.

  11. 1. Sopa and Pipa are both anti-pirating laws that they hope will decrease the amounts of illegal downloads.
    2. They are beneficial in some ways by stopping the illegal download of movies and music and therefore, bringing money to the true owners of the movies and songs.
    3. This is the true problem, if they are allowed to censure the internet, is that a violation of the right to free speech? But is is also trying to do good, which would you rather have, censoring, or pirating, your choice.
    4. There isn't a true solution, there will always be problems with piracy, we can't stop that. We should just shut down major pirating websites while keeping other things not censored.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The SOPA and PIPA bills are trying to abolish online piracy of music and movies. The government is trying to censor the internet! The internet is all about free speech, if we let the government pass those bills we will be letting them tell us what we can and can't say. That isn't the American way! Taking away one of our rights just to give a couple of billion dollar companies an increased profit? While we are at it why don't we start a charity for bill gates. On the other hand however online piracy is a little bit too common. Maybe we need a little censoring, but we shouldn't let the suit wearing government do it.

  13. 1) SOPA and PIPA are trying to stop the piracy of movies, music, video games, and anything that can be posted on the Internet.
    2) The people who are the original owners aren’t loosing money they worked for and stopping people from stealing their work.
    3) What’s bad is the censuring. These bills will block websites that have pirated media on them. But they will also block website that have linked to another site with pirated media.
    4) If websites like Mediafire make money from people downloading songs from there website part of their profits should be given to the owners of the song, game ect.

  14. 1. Their cover object is to end online piracy, but if one to read further they find out they had alternative motives.
    2. It's a good idea to stop goods from being illegally downloaded or shared because those whose sold them were losing revenue.
    3. The latter was the surface, but as you read further it later begins to explain how the government could shut down a site for copyright infringement. Also, a person accused of copyright infringement could go to jail for as little as 5 years.
    4. I cannot come up with any other solution because when they try to control piracy they end up with the power to control the internet. Their solution wasn't a one size fits all because most people perform acts of copyright infringement without even knowing it.

  15. 1) The bills SOPA & PIPA are trying to be passed to stop the internet from illegally downloading and sharing content that doesn't necessarily belong to the people doing it.

    2) A good aspect I could foresee coming out of this is that the people who make copyrighted material will now have full control over their content.

    3) A bad aspect I could foresee however would be the fact that many large companies might take advantage of people and sue tons of them. Being so rich, these companies would eventually make many people homeless.

    4) My one and only solution is this. Stop the idea of copyrighting content and your worldwide issue is solved. Nobody should ever get to control the largest virtual information highway because the word "copyright" gets them all riled up.

  16. 1:this is all because of two pieces of legislation: the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and its Senate companion bill, the Protect IP Act (PIPA). The purpose of these bills is to make it harder for sites — especially those located outside the United States — to sell or distribute pirated copyrighted material such as movies and music as well as physical goods such as counterfeit purses and watches. Even most of SOPA and PIPA’s strongest opponents applaud the intentions of the legislation while deploring what it might actually accomplish.

2: Illegal downloading of intellectual property not only hurts the headline-making actors and musicians, but the much lower paid writers, lyricists, screenwriters, bit part actors, etc. whose income is dependent on the small royalty checks from their work. For every Taylor Swift making millions off her talents who aren't really hurt by pirating, there are literally hundreds of hard-working industry people making a few bucks at a time whose next rent payment or grocery bill is dependent on that revenue stream.

3:youtube and facebook will be effected....people who make frag movies or montages will be removed completely as is unauthorized use of the video game.....

list can go on and on....

4:i have no solution.Piracy and illegal stuff is all over the internet you can not stop it.

  19. 1. They are trying to rid of the illegal piracy. They are controlling internet use in order to protect the illegal usage.
    2. The benefits to this is it will keep people from pirating things such as movies and music. This benefits the creators because they will get their money.
    3. The only downfall is you have to pay for everything that was able to be obtained by a touch of the button.
    4. The only solution is to allow the creators of thing to determine whether or not it should be free and the government will lock any other sources that dont avide by these rules.

  21. 1. The goal is to end piracy quickly and to give the government the power and control need to suppress copyright infringement.

    2. People ought to be able to make money off their creative ideas and work. To avoid paying for materials one steals money from producers.

    3. In trying to define what materials could be taken down by the government, the bills were extremely vague. The largest problem was with sites that "enabled" piracy. Such sites could be taken down without a trial. They could not sue the government because of the wording of the bill. Any website that had user created comments could be shutdown for enabling piracy.

4 I personally can't come up with a solution. However, if I were in the government's position, I would consult/hire Google to come up with a solution. The largest problem comes because there is no one good solution. The last thing our country needed was a bill that was put together in less than a month that limited freedom of speech rather than protecting the rights of producers.

  22. 1.Bills like this are trying to end piracy which is fine by me but the way that they want to go about it is ridiculous.
    2. If we can end Piracy than we can prevent the loss of money that the artists rightfully deserves. The whole reason that we download things is because we like them and support them but by downloading them illegally we take support out of the equation.
3.The bad thing about this is that to prevent piracy they want to shut down everything that does not credit things......that would shut down the entire internet essentially.
4.As far as solutions go I suggest that if they really wish to get rid of piracy they should go after the huge piracy sites rather than attacking the entire internet.
