(S17) Mind Blowing Technology

Ok I just watched "Interstellar" last night.  Mind blowing.  Here's a mind blowing technology idea found from a fellow student:

Large Hadron Collider

Research Links:
Official Website
Hadron sets sights on dark matter?

1.  The Hadron Collider has been the spot of controversy amongst scientists, techs and political leaders alike. What do you think?  Do you think that it is too risky to use? Or is risk worth result?

2. Why is this important? Where do you think this machine will take us in terms of technology and science?

If you really understood what you read, it's mind blowing. (I had to read it twice) And that is real.

3. Now consider all the mind blowing technologies that you see in some movies.  Pick one below (or another POPULAR movie with futuristic technology) and share your perspective about the details of a extraordinary technology concept introduced in the movie.  Is it SciFi forever or potentially real?  Discuss if:     It can never be real because...  or It could be real if....

  1. 1. The potential uses in today's society for a material like dark matter are almost limitless. Not only would it have almost unprecedented military applications, but it could help us understand how some of the most basic functions in our universe, like simple atomic energy, function. However, if we want to actually get a good read on dark matter, we'll need an absolutely perfect vacuum within, and we will need an equal amount of protons slung at each other, thus removing any potential for collisions with normal matter.

    2. Like I said before, with the way that people have talked about antimatter (or dark matter), we could advance leaps and bounds, both militarily and technologically. Materials like dark matter have been used throughout science fiction to explain how spaceships can fly at speeds greater than light, or how bombs can completely evaporate entire planets in fractions of a second. It could really take us about anywhere, once it's discovered.

    3. WARFRAME - The suits that the Tenno use could very well become reality; even though they are some sort of biotechnology in the game, there is the possibility that nanotechnology could hold the answer that we would need to make actual Warframes. The suits are skintight (so it seems), and while they wouldn't necessarily have any sort of powers in real life, the Tenno's suits can resist damage to a great degree. (I know this isn't technically a movie, but I'm doing it anyway)

  2. 1. All technology is the risk worth taking, as long it will benefit humans, or help us understand how things work in the universe. The Hadron Collider is used as a particle accelerator to accelerate particles at high velocities, containing the electromagnetic fields and containing them in well-defined beams. While it is a dangerous task to do, these particle accelerators will help use better understand the experimental particle physics.

    2. These ideas of dark matter and particle accelerators can be used for good and evil, by advancing our technology to use these for exploring how things work in the world. Science and technology were created to explore, and to see how far we can advance this world, by using our minds to discover.

    3. IRONMAN’S J.A.R.V.I.S – Introduced in the first Ironman movie, Jarvis is the ultimate voice control assistant, and far more advanced than your current Google Now or Siri. His capability to interact with Tony Stark, helping him develop and control, all the pieces of technology that Stark owns simultaneously, while giving him feedback, and his own snarky remarks. Now we are far away from anything close to J.A.R.V.I.S, but it won’t stay in the Sci-Fi world forever, as digital assistants get far more advanced and intuitive.

  3. 1.) Technology always holds risk and we need to always take these risks or we aren't going to get anywhere as a species and are understanding of our universe wont progress in anyway. The Hadron Collider is a particle accelerator the accelerates particles at high velocities and smashing them together to test certain physics and test for the Higgs boson contained in electromagnetic fields and containing them into well defined beams. It is a risky scientific device but the benefits do out way the negatives and is a valuable contribution to science.

2.) Dark matter or the Higgs Boson could advance science by leaps and bounds and these particles could make it so space travel is a daily thing that anyone could do with ease. Or they could solve several mystery's of the universe or our planet.

3.) If i'm going to pick anything it would be space travel and mechanized suits. The most well know interstellar travel method is warp drive or FTL and it is completely possible the idea is a spacecraft could achieve faster-than-light travel if a configurable energy-density field lower than that of vacuum could be created. Rather than exceeding the speed of light within a local reference frame, a spacecraft would traverse distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, resulting in effective faster-than-light travel. And in terms of mechanized suits we have the technology currently to make something like a gundam its just not cost effective at the moment because of motors that would need to run at the speed required are expensive and the armored plating would also cost a lot but in terms of where they would be used would be space. In the most practical terms a humanoid mech would be the best option for space combat or space operations from repairs, construction, or recovery of spacecraft the best option for these things are humanoid mechs.

  4. 1. Its a big risk, I see why some are not so sure about using it because some people could get hurt, a lot of money and time could be lost. However this device succeeding will be a break through.
Just listen to this old guy ---> "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
    ~Albert Einstein
    2. With the ability to use Dark Matter many things are possible, because it is an incredible efficient source of power. And with great power comes great responsibility (There is another quote). We could use this to power the entire world and still have leftovers. But this isn't all sunshine and rainbows, the military uses are there too.

    3. The Matrix scared me when I saw it, got me really paranoid. The idea of a computer that programs your brain to simulate a dream is ludicrous. But perhaps not impossible. Maybe in the near future more simulation devices like the Oculus Rift could take a step further into "Dream Tech." Or perhaps we are already there, perhaps we are in the Matrix right now...

  5. 1. Using the Large Hadron Collider, and successfully identifying dark matter, would benefit astronomers greatly. Astronomers know so little about dark matter and what it can do, and the LHC would be just the right tool for the job.

    2. This is probably important to understand the universe, and see if dark matter can improve our technology. As for technological improvements, I only see the ability to construct larger and more stable structures.

    3. Time travel (in "Back to the Future") is fun to think about, but in reality, it seems impossible. One little "bug" in the time-space continuum could completely change the world as we know it. Even if time travel was possible, anyone could change history, and I certainly would not expose that risk to the public.

  7. 1.) I do not think it is worth the risk. The LHC is mainly for knowledge purposes and does not have any direct benefit from it. It seems to cost too much money, too much energy, and too much manpower for it to have a higher reward than risk.

2.) I think this Hadron Collider will let us defy physics and do impossible.

  8. my topic so i get a blog pass.

  9. 1. I think that the hadron collider is dangerous because you can basically create a atom bomb with it. LHC is not any imagined threat that it poses, but rather the unbridled, unschooled and utterly absurd fears promulgated by uninformed people. Of course such things have always occurred such as in the with hunts of the middle ages, but today absurdities spread with the speed of light through the Internet, and can have potentially deleterious affects on genuine and well-founded research. Too bad that human reasoning and the intelligence of the average public (which of course my dear reader, does not include you) has not kept up with the pace of technological development.

    2. it can help us understand atoms and the energy they release when smashed together. The hadron collider smashes particles together which is fusion.

    3. the matrix is virtual reality and this can be used for many things like games, tests, training,etc...

  10. 1. The Hadron Collider is an amazing piece of equipment. It is crazy to think about what happens to those molecules when hurled at each other at insane speeds. Many thing happen, and we can barely see what happens on the molecular level. LSAG reaffirms and extends the conclusions of the 2003 report that LHC collisions present no danger and that there are no reasons for concern. They claim that everything that happens is what the earth already does in the un-contained universe.

    2. This large device could help us immensely in many scientific fields, because we are able to simulate reactions that we would otherwise never be able to study.

    3. Robo Cop~ This movie could be real because we already have robots, we are a little immature in that we don't have full control over it. But if we did they could be doing a lot for us and the world would be a very different place. It could be real if we could but a half human body inside a robot but we have full control over it.

  11. 1. The Hadron collider should be a spot of controversy, because we do not know what dark matter does. For all we know the scientists with this machine could be working toward creating a black hole. This item in my eyes is not a waste, because even if we could all die the benefits could be overwhelming. The risk could be worth the result and it could definitely be used for good.

    2. This is important for scientist to learn what to do when something like this happens in the future. This machine will take the human race to a new level of technology or it will decimate us.

    3. In movies such as Star Trek, Ender's Game and Star wars they have warp drive which allow the space ships move at unimaginable speeds above light even. This could become a reality which would make time travel possible. This could become real, because scientists have been able to make single particles move at the speed of light and it would take immense amounts of energy, but it would work.

  12. 1.) I feel like what has been done with the project is good enough where it is, and I feel if the people work on it too much then it will end up not going too well for us considering all the tech and stuff involved in making it, so I really think it has it’s own risks as of right now, but if it keeps on getting the work that it is to surpass much more boundaries then it might become dangerous.
2.) This technology seems to be quite important for discovering certain subatomic particles that can never be seen by anything else other than the Collider, and it will probably take us to quite a few interesting places if we can use it right and not blow anything up that doesn’t need to be blown up.
3.) One concept that I have found very interesting is something involving some sort of mech suits that are controlled by the user’s motions, I believe something like those were used briefly in the Avatar movie, and a better example would be the Jaegers of Pacific Rim, and I feel it might be possible to create something like that, although creating something the size of a Jaeger would probably not be too useful, maybe make it much smaller.

  13. 1. People have been using acceleration colliers to find new elements for years. The Hadron Collider is just a larger scale with more technology in it and the risk of overheating. In my opinion it's worth that risk. For years brave scientists have been doing things in the name of science and the greater good.

    2. The discovery of something new is amazing. A new element could be studied and be used in so many ways depending on its properties. A new resource could be made and potentially evolve mankind in so many ways.

    3. Cyborg Enhancements (Metal Gear Rising Revengance.) They have created private military mercenaries out of cyborgs from people who want a second chance or have returned from a war with missing limbs. Also have made high tech weaponry and robotic bodies. Even putting a conciseness into a body and be used as a weapon.

  14. 1) Everything has a risk to it and we won't know if it will be a risk worth taking until we try. It is a big risk, I know, but this may be a risk worth taking. It is true that the collider does not produce many molecules of a new element and that it requires a lot of energy but there is always a chance that the outcome can be amazing and it will be well worth taking this risk.

    2) The discovery of a new material is outstanding. New elements can have great potential and if we are able to make mass productions of the element, then we could do amazing things. It is said that people have discovered dark matter. If so, then this could help astronauts and scientists greatly.

    3)to be continued

2.) Well the Creation a new material could change everything but with a new creation everyone would want it. As Terms in science and tech this machine is the next step to more amazing items.
3.) Now this isn't a moive but it would be sweet but also very dangerous at the same time. In the show StarGate you have a gate that leads you to different worlds so if we had a stargate, we can expand our space knowledge and if earth ever fails this can help us escape maybe to another earth?

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. The Hadron Collider I believe to be worth its risks because the scientific discoveries that result from experiments it produces are greatly beneficial to mankind.

    2. I think the Hadron Collider may help us discover more about the origins of our universe, and hopefully will be able to greatly improve technology in the future. Future engines anyone?

    3. SciFi almost always has the potential to become scientific reality in the future, and we live in a time where modern gadgets and doohickeys were a thing of fantasy when they were conceived. Take a look at the original RoboCop: much of the tech displayed seems either normal or antiquated in modern light. Unresponsive AI are all too familiar, prosthetics and neural technology are making strides, and many of the cool, futuristic devices used look like clunky old things that our smartphones can do twice as efficiently. Going back even further, Dick Tracy's watch once seemed like the a surreally imaginative concept, but with the advent of the Apple Watch, scifi becomes reality.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. Some sources seem to believe that the risk isn't as big as others make it out to be. If that's true, than the experiment most definitely should begin. I think we should get a guarantee on it's safety before beginning, or at least some remotely close measurement of its destructive power.

    2. Discovering new information about our universe is always important, and there is no telling what this information could lead to. Societies could come to war, new elements may be harvest-able and even more dangerous inventions could be created.

    3. Terminator (series). The main theme of these movies consist of human-like machines that are (sent back in time) and designed for manslaughter. This isn't a completely unrealistic idea (except for the traveling to the past part). The robots and machines we build continually get more advanced and intelligent. People have already created extremely complex A,I, and deadly computer controlled weapons, With both in mind, I think it is a definite plausible , but not something probable.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1.) I don't think the risk is as bad as some of other sciences, but it is definitely risky. Risks are what are going to have to happen though, so we can progress science. Not everything in science is easy to find and discover, so these types of risks are going to have to happen. I don't think it's too risky, so we can progress in science.

2.) These types of machines are important in scientific advances. With discovery of dark matter and other things, we can drastically improve technology with elements and other things we've never had access to before.

3.) The matrix is something that definitely seems far-fetched in the movies, but may be something entirely possible in the near future. With the constant development of virtual reality, we might be able to make a world for everyone to plug in to. This subject may have seemed impossible when it came out, but with recent technological advances, this doesn't seem too far off. Maybe even with the creations of these movies, these technologies will come faster as people will want to recreate what they saw in movies.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1) The risk isn't necessarily too bad about it, but without the risk we might not come to a breakthrough with this machine. If things pan out as hoped, we've got a step up in science

    2) New material creation will be very beneficial to us as time progresses and multitude of benefits are very promising and exciting to have.

    3) The Matrix is what seems more possible than some other things that movies have brought to light. Virtual reality is in an all time high and the research for it is rapid. Perhaps at first when VR things came out they seemed very practical but the world soon then embraced it and wanted more. This will arrive sooner than some have expected and in all honesty will be a greater good.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1.) Technology always holds risk and we need to always take these risks or we aren't going to get anywhere as a species and are understanding our universe wont progress in anyway. The Hadron Collider is a particle accelerator that accelerates particles at high speeds and smashing them together to test certain physics and test for the Higgs boson contained in electromagnetic fields and containing them into well defined beams. its risky but taking risks you might discover something amazing.

2)Being to understand the results of what this machine can do can lead us to learn more.

    3) Matrix seems to over hyped in movies but can be possible in the future. Virtual reality being constantly worked on we are going to be able to let every individual live in a mind of their own.
