4. SkillsUSA

GenYES is a Career and Technology Education Program (CTE)

We are sponsored by a national charter for our Career Technology Student Organization (GenYES CTSO) and that is national organization is SkillsUSA.

Visit SkillsUSA

1.  Look around the site.  Find information about SkillsUSA that you think is relevant to you. Such as perhaps the skills gap, Mike Rowes comments, the competitions, the organizations mission, a student success, special programs, training modules.   Discover something that's of interest to you about this organization.  Explain why.

2.  SkillsUSA has a local chapter here in Arizona.  What's happening with SkillsUSA in our state?  AZSkillsUSA

3.  What ideas do you have for our GenYES CTSO?

  1. 1) "Career and technology education can give your child what’s needed to succeed for life". In our rapidly changing world, students need to get all of the technological experience we can get right now, because in even 5 years' time, the iPhone 6 will be a thing of the past, trumped by, what, the iPhone 10S Air or some other ridiculous number-letter combination? The way that technology is evolving at the moment falls almost directly in line with Moore's Law, getting exponentially better over a short period of time, and we'll need to stay on the forefront of it all, or else it will soon pass us up.

    2) Some of the things that are coming up are the Washington Leadership Institute which I've heard some very good things about; a friend of mine, Owen Prince, either actually attended it, or attended something similar in 6th Grade. Also, there are some conferences about leadership on October 1 and 2, which aren't necessarily very interesting to me. However, from the start to about the middle of November, there will be a Leadership Camp over in Williams, which might be interesting if I knew what was going to be covered there.

    3) The ideas developed by Ms. Kovesdy and Callahan and Hayden and everyone else spearheading CTSO have all been so good and cover so much, I'm not entirely sure I'd be able to come up with anything new and exciting that we could try.

  2. 1. “SkillsUSA is an applied method of instruction for preparing America’s high performance workers in public career and technical programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development.” SkillsUSA’s mission is to prepare all students with the tools required to be successful in the working environment. As the tech industry broadens, this organization will help prepare students to create a more prosperous world.

    2. The Arizona division of SkillsUSA mainly focuses on enhances the lives of student, instructor, and representative’s careers as they strive to succeed. On the first of October the division is hosting an event to jump start the year and excite the active members of SkillsUSA Arizona.

    3. For GenYES’s CTSO I believe we should reach out and find funds to further advance out school with technology. With our organization we should first focuses on enriching our school with technology, making sure each student is capable of using it. With the knowledge they’ll learn we will then be able to prepare Shadow’s students for a tech filled work environment.

  3. 1. "SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. We provide educational programs, events, and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms." SkillsUSA is trying to make sure students/future adults are knowledgeable in computers and general technology.

    2. I searched Arizona in the search bar but couldn't find things particularly about Arizona or an Arizonan student, just articles that contain that in 1 spot in a list. (I will continue if I can find something)

    3. There are a lot of good ideas from Ms. K, and other students. The only thing I can think of is just set-ups/organization. Not too much.

  4. 1) "A career and technology based education will help your child to be more than just an average student." Technology is a rapidly growing experience. With Technology we are at an advantage. Back in the day not everyone had this kind of technology. Adding technology in with our education helps us learn about technology itself and help us get things done faster. It let's us get a hands on experience and to get a feel for it ourselves.

    2) The SkillsUSA championship is starting in February 16 and goes on for about a month here in Phoenix AZ.

    3) I have never been good at coming up with ideas and i don't really have any to suggest for GenYes.

  5. 1. SkillsUSA is an organization meant to educate students so they are more well prepared for a career. This is relevant to all GENYes students who are interested in continuing their career in tech. "SkillsUSA’s mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens." -SkillsUSA

    2. SkillsUSA Arizona recently had a championship on trading, technology and service high school and college students.

    3. Perhaps the CTSO business will become a well known organization of helping the community with technology problems. I certainly home to be a part of CTSO and enjoy helping others with technology and having fun

  6. 1.) Nowadays, the modern generation always bury their head into their phones, video games, etc. On the virtual field trip, the students learn why math and science are actually important by showing them that trigonometry, chemistry, and physics are applied in real life. This interests me because it would be really cool to go on a virtual field trip to learn these subjects.

  7. 1. "Career and technology education can give your child what’s needed to succeed for life". As technology grows, the need for people to use it also grows. This program will help kids to stop taking and become makers in the field of technology.
2.The skillsUSA will be coming to Arizona February 16, and it will be going on close to a month
3.As of right now,i have no ideas. The only constant is change however and i can tell the CTSO will have many great things coming out of it in the near future

  8. 1. The thing that interested me about SkillsUSA is the professional development program. This course helps young adults with what they want to do when they get older. This will one look good on a resume and it will teach you certain skills such as recognize stress factors, establish career goals, or demonstrate social etiquette. There are alot more but it would be useless to list them.

    2. They are working in Arizona there helping the local zrizona citizens by enableing them to exel forward. They set up this program in nearly all states so no matter where you live you could join this program and get a good future ahead of you.

    3. To be complete honest i have no ideas for genyes because i just like it the way it is. So the CTSO must be doing something right.

  9. 1) "SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA’s mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens." For this company I have the highest regard for in the fact that it helps those out that need the help. I have the highest respect for any company that will do this for people. I would like to do something like this later in life.

    2) The Arizona division of SkillsUSA mainly focuses the enhancement of their students, instructors, and representatives lives while they try for success in their careers and lives.

    3) For the GenYes CTSO I would save money in an account instead of paying the students the very generous payment that they, get I would save the money for better tech for not only our school but all the schools in the district and depending on how it went I would like to get it nation wide so that all kids could be prepared for the future technology jobs that will come up so that they can be more likely to succeed later in life.

  10. 1. The thing that interested me the most about SkillsUSA, is the Professional Development Program (PDP). What PDP does, is allows an easy and smooth movement into the workforce or higher education. The program is available in both online and book form for easy access to anyone and everyone. This program allows for self-teaching and developing many skills to be prepared and have the proper skills in the workplace and in general. SkillsUSA is a great method and tool to prepare everyone for the technological world.

    2. The SkillsUSA division in Arizona has a couple events coming up, one being the Employee Leadership Conference taking place on Thursday October 2nd, which I will hopefully be attending because it sounds like an adventure.

    3. My ideas revolve around getting the GenYes class to do a lot more hands on projects, similar to that of the Arduino. This way so we can familiarize ourselves better with this technology and grasp how to use it better. This way us students can jump in and completely learn the potential that we truly possess and the use that to form outstanding things that will inspire new ideas and motivations.

  11. SkillsUSA Arizona empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens. SkillsUSA Arizona improves the quality of America’s skilled work force through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, technical and professional skills training. SkillsUSA Arizona enhances the lives and careers of students, instructors and industry representatives as they strive to be champions at work.

3.3. What ideas do you have for our GenYES CTSO? Honestly I don't have any idea for the genyes i am still new to genyes and i am still learning a lot about genyes.

  12. 1) Something that is of interest to me is the customer service training. This is because it will help you once you join the workforce. Another thing that interests me is the championships. During these there are over 6000 contests for over 98 events.

  13. 1. I found the scholarships section on the SkillsUSA website. This interested me because I need scholarships if I would like to attend a prodigious college, and the more scholarships that I find, the better. The fact that this organization offers scholarships also gives me insight on how large it is and how serious it is. Since SkillsUSA offers scholarships, I know that it is a serious and large organization that promotes education.

    2. In Arizona, SkillsUSA hosts a multitude of events. In October, they run a few leadership events, in November a leadership training camp, and regional competitions in January. These events seem to be interesting.

    3. For our CTSO, I believe that we should have more officers for more grades. We could have a freshman representative or two, one or two sophomore representatives, and so on. I also think that we should send more people to more competitions.

  14. 1.) The one thing in SkillsUSA was the Professional Development Program, a program that allows smoother movement into the workforce and higher education. This program helps people become better at learning and developing communication skills.

2.) Some events are coming up with this development in Arizona, coming up soon. I don't know the exact dates, however.

3.) My objective in GenYES is to do what I never thought I'd do, like making music, learning Java, and building computers.

  15. 1) SkillsUSA is a Career and Technology based education will help your child to be more than an average student. They have different types of training for different things. Like Webinars, Chapter Develop and managament, CSEP advisor training, PDP advisor training, service learning seminars, and washigton leadership training. This is reveleant because if your a genyes student or any other type of technology person then you can take one of these training lessons or all of them to increase your further understand of technology.

  16. 1.)I found the partnership they have with Rebuilding Together as a really kind and giving gesture. They reassure families with low-income or children, elderly, disabled live in good conditions and have a place they can call home. Every year more than 200,000 volunteers are used by 200 local RT affiliates to complete 10,000 projects. This is relevant to me because i grew up in a home where close to nothing was the paycheck. This article stood out and reach to me because i know how hard it can be and to have someone there and helping would be the greatest thing anyone could do.
2.)The leadership training camp is a 3-day camp where speakers and presenters. It is the most intense leadership program. It gives leadership experience and allows students to work with others from Arizona. It challenges them to think about their community and how to work with others to accomplish goals. It also teaches the importance of understanding their own strengths and weaknesses.
3.)As for CTSO we should get all the people who are truly interested and make group ideas and from that point thw board can take it away and vote on it within them.

  17. 1.) What caught my attention was the student 2 student program. Which gave high schoolers the chance to tutor middle or elementary schoolers. The reason this caught my attention is because I would have welcomed this when I was in elementary school or middle school. I think this kind of program is great is because giving kids the chance to consider career options before entering high school and also learning from high school students give those younger kids a better chance.

2.) A lot of conferences that are meant too provide training, Leadership, and competitive experiences for there members. This allow members to develop there employment skills for future job opportunity. Also conferences for competitive competitions for there members.

3.) I think we should push the board or district to integrate technology into are learning even more then it already has. Like having tablets instead of large heavy books that get lost or damaged. Or having tablets or laptops that get used in class instead of notebooks and pencils. This will also cut down paper use and help the environment more. This is something I really want to happen at our school because we already got a 3-D printer why not make our school even more technological in everyday classwork.

  18. 1. SkillsUSA is a conference about how to make it in the real world. The convention/conference gives all the details about how to properly do an interview, form a resume, how to get a job, and how to get your boss to keep you. SkillsUSA is for people wanting to learn the skills about how to become successful in whatever goal you're striving towards.

    2. The SkillsUSA champion ships are being held here in AZ. Not to mention the leadership conference. Also the leadership training camp.

    3. I would want to have the CTSO have more meetings, but, I don't want it to be more than 75% of the meeting is talking about the business. I want CTSO to be like an after school meeting for GenYES students to become more technology savvy. After the business is up and running and we already have meetings for people in the business, CTSO needs to take on a different form, and start to really become a GenYES club. GenYES students could come in after school and there would be meetings where we would talk about different things and people could choose to come or not come. There could be a meeting that's all about coding or computer building and delving deeper into each of the parts, or there could be another meeting where we delve into the gaming world and experience all it has to offer as an art form and a learning platform. This is something I would love to see and I hope this idea gets to see the light of day.
(Please, for the love of god, don't be a repeat)

  19. 1) I'm interested in the SkillsUSA program because I've always felt like I need to be a part of something big. With SkillsUSA, I can become a leader and set an example for kids my age. I'm interested in learning how to become a leader and lead people.

    2) AZSkillsUSA holds many Leadership conferences. I am going to attend their next conference in downtown Phoenix on October 2nd. AZSkillsUSA even has a leadership camping trip in the near future which would be fun to attend, but is sadly a little too out of reach for me... Last year I went to a similar leadership conference downtown and it was a blast. I learned so much on how being a leader doesnt mean you're instantly better than everyone, but rather just a guide.

    3) In our CTSO, I hope that students will be able to learn that we are the people of the future, and that we need to be teaching teachers and students on campus as leaders. When i'm asked to help a teacher use or fix their technology, I feel like I'm there to teach them how to fix it for the future. I never feel like it's an inconvenience towards me that I'm going to have to help with this problem every time. I think CTSO members and our leaders need to be teaching other students and teachers that we're there to guide them and teach everyone else.

  20. 1. SkillsUSA is a large organization that brings together teachers and students alike, giving knowledge to both generations. They hold conferences to give people heading into business the skills to be successful, getting good jobs and how to keep them. Using their foundation to share what everyone knows on being successful, they create new leaders that will help bring success to generations to come.

    2. SkillsUSA currently has several smaller state foundations that form the bonds of the organization. In Arizona, AZSkillsUSA is spreading events out that will allow the continuation of our generation's professionalism. Their most recent event allows the spreading of knowledge on how to create proper resumes, keep a job, and much more.

    3. The CTSO must act as a start to something big. It must be the leader in our generations technical prowess, and show that it is capable at accomplishing anything imaginable. The CTSO has to stand up, and share the technical knowledge with the world, allowing everyone to take part in the new technical revolution that has began.

  21. 1.Career readiness curriculum is a program that we in Genyes use a lot. From cooperating to each other to being a tech leader for the school. Also doing our responsibility and keeping our self's motivated. One thing in the program is to have good tech skill which we learn more everyday.
    2. The next thing that is happening in Arizona is the two leadership conferences in Phoenix and Tuscon. These leadership conferences we learn how to become a better leader and what you need to do to do that.
3.I recommend that we get more people to sell water and use the board more. If you like I can try to get people in 7th period.

  22. 1. Skills USA looks like a overall good program for any group. Gen Yes totally. Its for determined people. I see so many people in my classroom who go to school to get it done and do there work. They actually try. Then there the kids who don't really care and overall slack. So Skills USA is for those hard working kids. This organization look like a good backbone for anyone really. Mike Rowe started a foundation with Skills USA that is really cool. His words stood out to me. The people that really want skills and to learn to help. Skills USA I can see helping my generation with jobs. Jobs in high demand. Like the tech jobs my fellow GenYes people look in to. Skills USA is something I would really look in to.
    2. In Arizona Skills USA there are really looking to the employee Leader conference. It is a big deal in our convention center. They are focusing on unemployment. We really need that. We have lots of jobs people could do. This really interest me. In the Arizona group its interesting because there are mostly girls and like two guy. So go girl power. Its good to see girl leader. I am so excited to go to this conference.
    3. In GenYes I think I am pretty confident in our leaders. One thing I like to see more of thought is other options. I am one of two girls in GenYes and I well speak my option. It interest me. Having that girl power. And my insight. I think Mrs. K. you run the group well. This time I don't have many ideas but I think the higher GenYes classes should get know period 6 and 7 a little more. The leaders especially.

  23. 1.) One thing that seemed interesting about SkillsUSA is that it is pretty much runned by the students in order to increase their skills and eventually get better jobs because of it. These skills include Technical, Academic, and Employability.
2.) The SkillsUSA Chapter here in Arizona has around 7 conferences each year, with 4 in the Fall and 3 in the Spring, and the fall conferences focus on building certain skills that will help the person later on in life, and the Spring conferences are mainly competitions that the members go through.
3.) I’m not really sure if I have much ideas at the current moment that the CTSO can d

  24. 1.) Something I found interesting about SkillsUSA is all of the different programs that are centered around meaningful career development for students, including assessments, online classes, student-to-student mentoring, and other programs of similar nature.
2.) In SkillsUSA Arizona, there are five events held within Arizona, which included leadership conferences, leadership development seminars, and competitions. They additionally run the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO), which gives students work skills not available in traditional classrooms.
3.) While I don't have many ideas for our GenYes CTSO, I think it might be of use to learn about creating traditional resumes and portfolios.

  25. 1.) "SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce." Career and technology education can give students whats needed to succeed in life, this type of education will be able to prepare them for the future. SkillsUSA can also build self-esteem, positive attitudes and qualify students to excel.

2.) SkillsUSA Arizona has many leadership conferences, and they also hold championships here in Phoenix. On October 1st there will be a chapter leadership conference and on October 2nd there will be an employee leadership conference.

3.) I can't think of anything new and exciting to add to CTSO.

2.SkillsUSA az is focusing on leadership with many leadership conferences coming up. Like the National leadership skills conference coming up on June 23-28

    3. I think our CTO should put a lot of focus on the business and get more people to sell water. Other than that I am confident about our leaders.

"SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce." 29. 1. Skills USA is an organization dedicated to ensuring that America is supplied with a great deal of specialists. They want every job covered and they want them covered well. It's pretty fascinating interesting how Skills USA promotes specializing in everything including jobs that are often considered gritty and rough and only for people who are college drop-outs. Most often students are encouraged to shoot big for something like a science or big business.

    2. AZ Skills USA is hosting a leadership training camp this November. I would be interested have I not been to multiple other leadership training camps. They also hold chapter conferences, and participate in the national competition where highschool and college students can compete in how skilled they are in various areas such as welding, carpentry, etc.

    3. Obviously our CTSO will focus specifically on specialization with computers and other electronic devices. We could try hosting a competition amongst ourselves, just for fun, to try and show off our numerous abilities as well teach each other some cool stuff.

2)Employee Leadership Conference is coming to Arizona in October and it is helping peers to learn how to hear the words "Your Hired" from the employer, Also it will provide tips on Job interviews
3)I feel like the GenYES CTSO should help people with their tech troubles in and out of school no madder what time of day or night it is also we should be some what of a stand out from the normal crowd. 2. The Arizona devision is working to make school a better place, and provide opportunites, like the upcoming leadership conference, to help students learn about real live.

    3. I think that it would not only be fun, but a good learning experience to work togethor or in small groups, and compete against each other to show off our talents, but also to show others new things that they didnt know about yet.

  33. 1. So SkillsUSA is an organization built around students and teachers. What interests me is that the program has so many great opportunity to offer up for students. It heavily promotes student leadership, and supports it through events and scholarships.

    2. We (GenYes) are a part of SkillsUSA. The class is teaching valuable career skills through and with technology. Our program specifically is amazing because we get lots of help through funds and support from big business company and people. We also have Debbie Kovesdy who has gotten national recognition through the Genyes program, and is even on the front page of the GenYes.org webpage.

    3. I think for CTSO , we should preform like a business because that's what we will become. It will teach us how to preform in a working environment and how to be successful in our careers.

  34. 1. SkillsUSA’s mission is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations.
More than 14,500 instructors and administrators are professional members of SkillsUSA.

    2. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations.
More than 14,500 instructors and administrators are professional members of SkillsUSA.SkillsUSA offers advanced training for students and advisors that focuses on the skills needed to be champions at work, in the communities and in their personal lives. It's known as the Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI).

    3. I think the CTSO is really god, maybe we should just reach out more and get more advanced technology but besides that it's great!

  35. 1. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry workers together. Their mission is to empower it's members to become world class workers, and leaders. They serve more than 300,000 students annually and continue to educate students and industry workers throughout the years. This interest me because it makes me wonder how society is feeling about fellow students around the country and what the real meaning of their work is.

    2. SkillsUSA is having a big conference series about the event and people have to submit certain amount of information by November 1. They are going to be training teachers, having a skills conference and doing a training camp over the past 3 months of time. They are running a chapter for students that is going to help the growth and benefit.

    3. In my opinion I don't know much of what CTSO is planning but I think they are doing the right thing so far and started the ideas that I know of right now are really great way to expand the thoughts of the community and students in school.

  36. 1. I really like the success stories that they have on their site. One success story that I really like is Alan Gomez'. He started out as a student in high school who just got by. "Nothing really inspired me," he said. But after a few inspiring words from his counselor and her assistant, he felt inspired to to to make something out of his life. He later joined SkillsUSA, which gave him the leadership and survival skills to get overcome anything that life threw at him. These skills helped him to receive a career as a technology education instructor in the middle and high school levels, a master’s degree in education and a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering.
    2. SkillsUSA is holding a Leadership Training Camp here in Arizona. They are using huge amounts of resources to bring in fun and educational speakers to engage students during the 3 day event. The camp will help the students learn how to work with others to accomplish large and small goals and and will show them the importance of understanding their own strengths.
    3. I think our CTSO should focus on the business and making ourselves known to the community. We could also have small competitions in groups so that we can show off our many talents. I think that would be fun and it would show our strengths and weaknesses to the people we are working with.

  37. 1. I think the CTE program and Skills USA are cool, because they feel like I can be a part of something bigger. I've always wanted to be a leader and these programs are a great way to get a head start!

    2. Skills USA is holding a leadership conference downtown at the Phoenix Convention center, which I, along with many of my classmates, will be attending tomorrow on October the 2nd.

    3. I would suggest a promotion for our business where customers can bring one extra person for free for a specific session. It would encourage elderly couples to come together to learn about their tech devices, and have them both wanting to come back for the next session.

  38. 1: I like the PDP program they have because as a person who will be transitioning from an educational perspective to using technology as a profession. It says that it will smooth out the transition. I think that it is great that they have this. A lot of people will undoubtedly use this to their advantage.

2: In the Arizona branch of Skills USA, we are just about to have the leadership conference on the second. We are also having the championship on the 7-8.

3: I think that the Genyes CTSO should have meetings a little more often and have them on regular intervals. It would also be a good idea to incorporate talking about what we will next do in the class.

  39. 1)The most interesting and thought worthy section of the skills USA website is their goals and their goals for connections. They have goals for 1 million people yearly to be in this program and it is not for money, but to change the new generation into better people.
2)Skills USA Arizona is insuring a skilled work force, they serve around 300, 000 people yearly and want to keep on helping more people yearly. The Skills USA in Arizona has officers for welding, broadcast, media production, construction, photography, fire fighting, building trades and robotics. These people are fairly young and help people around the AZ area.
3)I feel that genyes CTSO should follow by the same rules for Skills USA including leadership, selflessness and to be with others and teach them. We need to learn and grow.

  40. 1.During SkillsUSA week, members can also help raise awareness of SkillsUSA. This can be accomplished through field trips to local businesses, an open house for parents or industry partners, a visit to local community organizations to make a brief presentation about SkillsUSA, or providing news releases and public service announcements to local media outlets for possible distribution. this is great
