(S10) Desktop vs. Laptop

What do you think is the future of desktop computers?

Take a look at these links before you answer:

Intel Kills Desktop Production

Top Ten Desktop Computers

Forget Mobile vs Desktop

1.  So what do you think?  Will desktops be necessary in 3, 5, 10 years?  And will you be using one?

2.  Do the "Computer Configurator" exercise on the Top Ten link.  What device does it suggest for your needs?

3.  Comment on someone else's answer and provide facts along with your opinions on why you agree or disagree with their answer.

  1. 1.Desktops are going to die with the new flexible glass and things like google glasses out there in 5 to 10 years we won't even be using them. I specifically will probably move on to tablets as opposed to the desktop.

    3. I disagree. I don't think desktops will disappear in the near future. As it is they are in common use today and the chance that everybody will transition in 5-10 years is very low.

  2. 1. I think that desktops will always be around, unless laptops manage to get a better portable mouse. That trackpad is still pretty bad.. But otherwise, I think people will always be using desktops, because they are a bit easier to use because there is no worrying about charging. But with the future, there of course could be much better batteries.
    2. Based on the quiz, I would most likely be using a Gaming desktop... Shocking...

    2. I disagree that they will be around. New technology comes out everyday and you mostly see people with Ipads instead of desktop computers. Many people like the idea of having a device that is touch screen and that is mobile.

    1. I think that desktops will still be around since desktops can hold a lot more memory than current laptops, but in the next few years, they might become fewer.

      Delete
    2. I think that Desktops will stick around for another 10-15 years because a lot of people wont want to convert over from desktop. Also because Tablets will always be behind because there will be better OS for Desktops etc.

      Delete
    3. I think desktops will still be used by the people who want to use them, it is all up to your needs when it comes to people buying computers.

  4. 1. In the future desktops will not be necessary, however, I think they will certainly still be in use. As it is most americans have desktops in their homes and use them frequently, so a departure from them while possible is unlikely in the near future. As to whether or not I will being using one I will have to say that I probably won't own one but may use one occasionally in college or in a library.

in terms of Intel "killing" desktops, that would never happen. As nice as they can make a mobile computers, a desktop is a secure, in home platform that will always have better processing power.

  6. No, the desktop computer will be obsolete. We will all be using fast mini computers in the future.

  7. 1. Although desktops may be dropping in sales due to the new technology like wrist computers and tablets, I believe they are still a necessity. They can store a lot of data and have capabilities that tablets do not. Tablets are convenient, but they can be a hassel as well. They do not contain the security or the programs that home computers can contain. Home computers can just do so much more and are worth the money.

    2. It said that a home computer was a perfect choice because I often use business applications, saving and editing photos, and I do research and homework. Those are the most important features for me and they are much easier to do with a home computer as opposed to anything else. I don't do much gaming, so a gaming computer or a tablet is not necessary for my needs.

    4. yeah I also believe they will be around for a long time because like you said, the have a lot of storage space. Not only but also desktops are for a home thats why they will always be around.

  8. 1. I do no think desktops will be around in 5 years. I have a smart phone now and I don't ever use my computer unless I'm home at night and charging my phone.

  9. 1 I think desktops will still be around in the future, and will never go away. They are as powerful as laptop computers, but aesthetically work and feel differently. There will always be somebody who will prefer a desktop to a laptop.
2 It says I need a gaming PC which would be an awful choice for what I want to use a computer for. I want a computer, that is a laptop, that has a high cpu so it can handle running dj software, and music production or recording software easily.

  12. 1: I think that desktops will easily be around in the next 5 to 10 years because people enjoy having a home desktop. Although I thoroughly believe that desktops will be super fast with ridiculous spyware protection so it runs properly. In todays day and age the design of desktops isnt really looking to great unless of course you purchase a desktop from Alienware. I also know that desktops will have a great design in the future because a stylish design is very appealing to people in todays day and age.

    2. To add onto my first statement, laptops will probably evolve into having more space, and having a 'portable desktop' computer would be nice. Desktops will fade away eventually, but they will not be completely gone. They'll probably be considered more like antiques, such as an Apple 2 computer might be now.

  18. 1. I still have a use for desktops, I will still probably use a desktop. It's what my family can afford. It may not be fast but it works just fine and i'm happy with it. Though I would enjoy my own laptop so I can do stuff my parents won't yell at me for, and it's nothing wrong. Just to download a free game, no pirating. I kinda disagree with pirating.

  19. 1. I believe that they are necessary for more powerful processes, because laptops, while still being capable of many of the same tasks that desktops are capable of, laptops are more compact, mobile, and accessible.

    1. 3. Mobility and accessibility are not always necessary, and often detract from the power and ability in computing. If you are going for mobility, you may as well get a tablet device as their power is rising and may soon be able to rival laptop computers.

  20. 3. I agree with Abbe Stormer's comment about pc's being used for school and business use with limited use at home.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. Absolutely, desktops will be necessary in 3, 5, and 10 years. Their computing power, speed, and customizability is the only way for many things to be done. Most movie makers use desktop computers because videos are huge files, and they need huge processing speeds and harddrive memory to edit videos. I'd like to use one, if they still exist commercially.

    2. It recommended Imac for me. I don't like mac, though, so its next option said HP Pavilion Elite.

    3. I disagree with Public Scorpion. Even if he uses a smart phone, he doesn't necessarily use computers for major goals. Try editing a feature film with professional effects on a tablet. It's not easy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1) desktops will still be here in 10 years because most of them run faster than laptops, they are also good if you have space for them because you dont have to charge them. Most of them run games better than laptops so they are more useful than laptops most of the time.

    2) I recommended me for an apple computer and an HP pavillion elite

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1.) I think desktop computers will not be necessary in 5 years. Desktop computers are good but you cant take them anywhere which can be bad if you need to travel for work. I think though people will still have them. Businesses will have them if there are desk jobs because those computers dont need to move any where.

2.) The computers recommend to me where either a Lenovo Edge 72 or build a custom gaming computer. I dont like PC so i dont think these are good choices for me.

    1. I agree with you. Desktop computers are rapidly getting out-dated and becoming unnecessary. It is nearly impossible to travel with them because they are big. Portable, new mobile devices are the future of desktop computers.

    2. I agree, even though the need for them might go down I don't think they will completely diminish, especially with the necessity for them in businesses.

      Delete
  24. 1. I think they will exist, but not be "necessary". I think that people like me that want to pick and choose parts for themselves to cater to their needs will use the option. I think I will likely always use one so I can have the best performance for cost.

  25. 1. Desktop computers have been the powerhouses of personal computing for more than a decade. In 10 years, this will be unchanged as laptops are unable to reach the level of power which you can with desktop computers. They are also exponentially more upgrade-able. I will most certainly be using one.

    2. It suggested a gaming computer.

    2. The quiz said i would be using a multimedia PC.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Desktops are great, but in a few years I don't see myself using one. Currently, I have my own desktop computer and it runs smoothly. However, it always lets me down whenever I want to go to a friend's house or on a vacation, and I have no way to transport that big monster. With the new data that allows the way the wires are connected to the motherboard can be much more convenient for mobile devices, it will be hard not to switch entirely to mobile devices. It is difficult to keep up with technology, but it is usually worth it.
    2. The survey/quiz said I should use a multimedia PC, and a Gaming PC was a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1. I think that in the future desktops will be completely phased out of production only due to the increasing intracity and complexity. I also believe that an alternative to only laptops or more customizable and standardized laptop components.

  29. 1. Desktops are still around today. Im planning on using one as for just storage in the future. So yes I think it is necessary to have these things in the future. I own an alienware laptop, the m11x. I plan to own an alienware desktop in the future. The alienware area 51 is the best desktop alienware computer ive seen so far. 2. Response to comment- A laptop is a computer you can swap out hard drives depending if its a 2.5 or 3.5 inch hard drive and you can also get a SATA to USB adapter if necessary. In case you meant tablet instead of laptop the iPad can read storage you just need a adapter to go from the dock/charging connector to a USB I believe.

  35. 1. With the way technology is advancing there may not be as many desktop computers. Eventually desktop computers will go extinct farther in the future. I use a desktop and a tablet. But if there is some thing made in the future that's better than a desktop I might use it.

    2. It gave me an IMAC computer. But I really can't afford that computer.

    1. I see your point with something coming out that's better than a desktop, but with all of these new advances to store things on the cloud, specifically so you can send them to your desktop at home, I doubt we would just throw it out the window.

  36. 1. Honestly I don't think the tablets/laptops will pass the desktops for another 15-20 years. When price starts going down people will start to convert to tablets etc.

    1. I honestly do not agree with you. Your point is unclear. Look at modern phones for instance. The Galaxy S IV is said to have Samsung's new eight-core processor clocked around 2GHz, now relate that to the "new" phone last year... the Galaxy S III which only have a quad-core 1.4GHz processor. Looking at the evolution between these devices can predict the future. The power is increasing while prices are starting to drop. The industrial world is also taking mobile computing into effect. Most restaurants and stores (JC Pennys, etc) are using mobile computing to process their marketing. If this continues, you are surely not going to see desktops around much longer and DEFINITELY not another 15-20 years.

      Delete
    2. Response- no don't worry they will be the ones being able to run graphic intensive games and also servers so don't worry they will be around for another 15-20 years. Also I believe if Intel stops making desktop CPU's AMD is going to come out on top but I doubt that Intel would stop now. Also I said that the when Prices really start going down, people are going to convert to tablets but as I mentioned earlier there not going to conquer desktops as far as gaming and performance.

  37. 1. Yes I very strongly think desktops will be relevant in for years to come it just is more convenient to have a monitor and a keyboard in a home office instead of a laptop for the fact it laptops have a smaller screen and it's more confined. I think of it like this they both have there different things they were built for it's like saying why don't just fly instead of drive.

    1. I agree 100000000% A desktop computer is way better for doing the things that interest you most. It capability exceeds portable devices by a long run. It may not be very portable but it will allow you to peruse your strongest technological hobbies.

  38. 1. From personal experience and research in the field of mobile and stationary technology, I have found that I am always on a mobile device and not so much on stationary computers (desktop computers). I have not upgraded any of my desktop computer recently but have upgraded my laptops. Personally, I will not buy another desktop computer again. I have seen the same results in computing power in both laptop and desktop. The only difference being portability. Taking the factors into thought, I will spend the extra little bit of money to have a portable computer over a non-portable one. The modern technology has allowed, once again, to have enormous amounts of power. That being said, I do not see desktop computers staying around in the net few years.

    2. The results of the "Computer Configurator" show recommendations to get a home computer that has strong multimedia capabilities. I understand and mostly agree with the poll. The computer would need hyper-threading, a strong CPU, great graphics, optical drive, several peripherals, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. In a practical standpoint I highly doubt that desktops will be relevant in the next 3 to 5 years. As a personal standpoint no, I highly doubt I'll be using one due to the fact of mobility that laptops give me. A laptop can do most of the basic functions that a desktop can do and gives the user mobility which in today's society is highly needed.
    2. It suggested that Apple iMac for me.

  40. 1. I think desktops will always be relevant. Even with mobile devices, people like gamers enjoy playing across three monitors. And a lot of people can't stand touch-screen keyboards, due to the fact that there's no tactile feedback.

    2. The iMac was suggested to me. It seems to have suggested the iMac to a lot of other people as well. Something tells me it may be a tad biased.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 3. I agree that the computer configurator is quite biased. Almost every one who did the blog got the choice powerful imac and I think that the survey needs a better variate of both computers and questions. But I disagree that desktops will stay because they are not as reliable as they use to be. laptops are portable and con now be used as really good gaming computers.

      Delete
    2. So if you think desktop will always be relevant then why don't we have room sized computers? why won't the trend of electronics getting smaller apply to desktops as well?

      Delete
  41. 1. I think that desktops will stay for a decade or because of there reliability, better gaming specs, and the fact that it is easier to upgrade parts. Although the desktop is reliable, mobile devices are becoming better for all of the desktops traits. The fact of the matter is that people will want to use a portable machine so desktops will become fewer. Lastly I believe that laptops will not be the only popular portable device taking the desktops place.

    2. The survey choose the apples famous imac as my personal desktop. I believe that the survey had a good choice but it doesn't have a lot of diversity so a lot of people got the same choice. Although not a lot of people got the laptop choice which means that there is still hope for the dektop.

  42. 1. I think in 5 years desktops will become old fashioned. Many may argue with me but the same happened back in the 40's and 50's when computers took up entire rooms, people never thought they would be used for personal use and they have.

    2. It suggested an IMac for me which in my opinion is not a bad choice. I just withed they considered prices because all the computers they had were waaaaaaay over my budget.

    2. It wanted me to get a gaming PC, even though I mostly just browse the internet.

  45. 1.If I do use a desktop then it would have to be a good reason but in 10 years I think that I would just use a laptop because it is portable and more easier to use.

  47. 1. Of course I believe that Desktop computers will be around and necessary. If you go to work, you don't need to take the computer home, There are tablets, and mobile devices for that, laptops are still good too for the go as they can be nice on a car ride for movies or play a game, tablets and mobile phones are now becoming as high tech as some of the computers made so it would be easier to just bring a tablet/smart phone.

    2. The recommended device for me would be the Alienware Area 51 because its very neat because I do actually have an Alienware M17x Gaming Laptop! A lot of people dislike Alienware and think it's just nice for having "flashing lights" but I disagree I find it very nice as it can run High performance games, you can upgrade it and do a ton of stuff.

  48. 1. With the upcoming advances in mobile technology and quick easy to use processing equipment I believe the desktop will start to slowly decrease in use in the next 5 years or so, but I don't think desktops will ever really die out, the need for a quicker easily customizable desktop will never completely go away.

2.The program suggests Alienware Area 51 ALX.

  49. 1. They will be extremely necessary. Intel is doing many thing that are extremely advanced and will help in the extinction of a desktop computer but nothing still beats having a custom built PC for video gaming and any true gamer will never give up the desktop. Especially if there is a lot of money in it. Yes, other devices are being advanced at a vast rate but so is the desktop nation. It may seem impractical but millions are still avid desktop users and there is absolutely no way that they will diminish in the near future.

    2. Apple iMac

  50. 1.) I believe that desktops are going to remain in our world as we know it for a very long time. Desktops can simply do things better than laptops, nine times out of ten. They are not a dying breed, they are just being pushed down by social media. All the "cool and hip" people are getting laptops and tablets and such, so therefore they are wanted more by the people, and therefore "better"

2.) I got an apple iMac. Yeah, no not happening.
