Big Data in Your Blood

What is this?
And why should you care about how it might change your life?
  1. So what is it?
  2. After reading the entire article, consider first, is this a good advance in technological progress for you personally?  For your health?  For your participation in sports?  For the potential of raising a family?
  3. After reading the entire article, quote a line that jumps out to you and comment on the benefits or detriment to society this might cause.
  4. Explore one of the links in the article.  Comment on what you discovered.

Before you comment... reread the instructions for this blog.  Many of you are skimpy on your writing.  Please be mindful grades here on out will expect you to; 1) write in complete sentences after thoughtfully considering what you read and 2) write a significant amount defending your position.

  1. 1. The image depicts a new technological advancement which would serve as a epidermal implant used to monitor biological activity, including heart rate, brain activity, and body temperature.

    2. Personally this tech would not significantly affect me in my life and health, my participation in sports, or my potential in raising a family as I do not categorize myself as someone who would find them self needing such specific biological data.

    3. "There are likely to be different strategies depending on company, country of use and whether the product is looking as something regulated, like a drug, or open, like a heart rate." The free reign given to companies with this technology may play into the "Big Brother" mob-mentality, giving new reason for an age old ideal of over-bearing control of society and government, which, at extremes, causes revolt.

    4. I followed a link to an article about the Nike "Fuelband". The article spoke about its un-friendlike approach to keeping you healthy. It focused on how its unapologetic manner made it a hated acquaintance of the author, constantly badgering the wearer towards health which may not be the greatest goal of the user for the entire time it is used.

  2. 1) The picture above shows a tattoo that can be put onto human flesh to monitor the activity in both the Circulatory and Nervous systems. While an individual wears this electronic tattoo, the company manufacturing it keeps track of all the data recorded by this device and stores it.

    2) I would not want to have something leech information from within my body off of me. This advancement in technology looks very interesting, but I don't feel comfortable with it myself. The idea of a device calculating a person physical and mental state makes me a little uneasy because I feel everybody can determine their own path to living a healthy and fit lifestyle. However, if this new device could help scientist discover new medicine than I'll give it a thumbs up there.

    3) "There are also movements to use this data in entirely new ways, for patient-generated medical research (Quentin Hardy)." From what I stated above, this was the one benefit I saw in this device. It could perhaps assist scientists in finding solutions for certain diseases or sicknesses.

    4) The link I decided to follow was "23andme", which led to a website selling DNA Spit Kits. In the kits, you get a device that you spit in and you then send it to a laboratory to be analyzed and check your results online. The only downfall is the device costs $299.

  3. 1.) This is a tattoo that is applied to your skin made by Nike designed to monitor your heart rate.

2.) I think that this product may be good for sport players but outside of that may be a slight invasion of privacy.

3.)"Those legal and corporate distinctions, of course, were all developed in a world where we weren’t able to see so much of each other, or deduce one behavior by crunching the data from several other sources" This sort of stands out to me because it sounds like they are trying to put down any other companies.

4.)I went to nike.com and discovered that they have a ring that works as a heart rate monitor and a step counter.

  4. 1 This is a Stretchable electronic that will be able to measure heart rate, brain activity, body temperature and hydration levels.

    2. I think that this is a very outstanding thing for athletes, and also for their health.

  5. 1) This article was basically saying that you should buy their product because it's a new advance in technology. This is a product that tells you how many calories you have burned and what your heart rate is.

    2) I think that it's a leap in technology but I mean I don't think that many people will buy it because they wont like the feeling of having something on your skin that does all the tasks that it does and some may be freaked out by the task of what such a small thing can do. It's like some people don't like the fact of having a smart phone and how "unsafe" I think that this is a leap in technology for health because of some of the features it can do and it's just like a pedometer that kids used to have and you could shake them in your hands to make the count go up on how many steps you've taken.

    3) "Already products like the Nike+ FuelBand and the Fitbit wireless monitor track our daily activity, taking note of our steps and calories burned." This line stood out to me because for a cheaper item that does just about the same thing and these you can hook up to your smart phone, people may go for these instead of a creepy chip you can put on you that measures the same things this does. I personally like the Nike Fuel Band because it's stylish and they wree such a big hit that Nike had a HUGE waiting list for them so their was more demand then how many they could make and everyone wanted one.

    4) I went to Nike.com and checked out the Nike Fuel Band and found out more interesting fact about it and how its works and it's kick of cool how we have gone from a pedometer that we wore in the 5th grade to these and it's basically the same thing, but only in a more stylish idea that people want to see and find more appealing.

  7. 1. It is a wearable, stretchable, monitoring device that allows the user and company to gather tons of data that can be used to monitor activity, disease, and many other things.

    2. I think that this is quite a cool thing for me. I think that as I grow older, I might want to see information about my blood, heartbeat, and activity. It would show me in what areas I would need to work to keep physically healthy.

    3. "Those are not just lofty goals; they make a lot of sense." This is completely true about this device. Although they are lofty goals, this device seems to provide the possibility that people can learn more through this device.

    4. I went to mc10's website and found out about their goals and accomplishments. The "tattoo" isn't their only accomplishment, they also have designed rigid-less LEDs and solar panels, quite cool. http://goo.gl/4ZqPo

  8. 1. That right there is "stretchable electronics" a small patch that goes on clothes, shoes, or even on or inside the skin. Its job is to measure and record data about the processes of your body. Such as heart rate, brain activity, hydration levels and the such.
    2. personally i think its pretty creepy, partially because i watched a Doctor Who episode yesterday where humans were given ear pieces that updated them on the news and such but the real reason was that it could control their brain. I think these patches are a step closer to mind control technology. In my life i don't think i would ever need one, maybe if i had some super rare decease and they needed to study the effects it had on me. Other than that i don't find it very practical in daily life.
    3. “Ultimately, we see ourselves as a part of the healthcare ecosystem,” Amar Kendale, MC10’s VP of market strategy and development, said in an e-mail. In this future, he wrote, “data will need to be shared seamlessly between customers, providers, and payers in order to reduce heathcare costs and simultaneously deliver the best possible care.” my thoughts on this is that it will be very expensive and won't reduce the cost of healthcare, i don't see this product as being a major part of healthcare in the world.
    4. I went on over to mc10's website and found that they are making electronic components that can fold and be placed on just about anything, personally i see this as a very good component for like spies. You could fold it onto the inside of a piece of paper and it would be so flat it wouldn't stand out much.

  9. 1. It's a stretchable electronic that can be put in your body or worn as a temporary tatoo or clothing. It can measure heart rate, brain activity, body temperature, and hydration levels.

    2. Personally I wouldn't use this device because I really couldn't aford it. But this technology would be good for athletes so they can track their hydration and activity level so they can preform better in their sport.

    3. “Ultimately, we see ourselves as a part of the healthcare ecosystem,” - Amar Kendale. We might be able to benifit from this new technology and everyone can be even more healthier by useing this device.

    4. I went to the Nike website and there was this really cool Nike band that tracks calories, steps, and time. It can even track your progress by using your phone. One of my friends has one and it's really cool.

  10. 1. It is a flexible skin patch/implant that you put on/in your skin to monitor your vitals, including blood and H2O levels.
    2. I believe that is's an amazing advance in healthcare products. This could bring us closer to the stereotypical future, such as in The Jetsons. Probably not for me in the near future, but maybe later in my life, I might invest my money into it. No to sports, period. This could be a good advancement for the raising of a family with diabetic, and even hemophiliac children.
    3. "Proteus hopes to use anonymized data from its customers to understand health patterns over an entire population, presumably to revolutionize medicine." This line jumps at me because it implies that the device will have some sort of connectivity to a database, be it wirelessly or otherwise. This could benefit society because of real-time health readings wirelessly and save lives. It could detriment society due to their privacy feeling infringed.
    4. The 23andme.com site. It's a spit scanner that reads health information.

  11. 1. What this device is is a stretchable patch that you put on your clothes, body or what you will it to be. It measures heartbeat, brain activity, body temperature and hydration level.

    2. I personally would not use this device it is a very intresting idea and invention but it gives me the feeling that I'm being monitored by other people.

    3. “All of the devices that are coming on the market will shuffle their data into different environments,” linda Avey,co founder of personal genetics company 23andme.

    4. I went to Nike fuelband and saw that you can do a lot cool features like challenge yourself daily, reach new goals, and even tell the device what activity your participating in such as basketball. I thought that was really neat that you can put the activities your doing instead of just your calorie intake and stuff like just walking.

  12. 1. The contraption is a small microchip that can be tattooed onto people's skin, placed over clothes, or swallowed in pill form. It monitors things that are happening in your body like blood rate, heart rate, brain waves, etc.

    2. For me personally, this might be a major advantage in health and lifestyle since I can monitor how my body is working so I can see a heart attack in advance or something. If some brainwaves can be translated into pain meters or something, then it might be a good idea to use in sports to see how much effort you're exerting and how much you're faking.

    3. "These will be capable of measuring not just heart rate, the company says, but brain activity, body temperature and hydration levels." The main thesis of this article is the most shocking thing I found about it. It's truly amazing, and seems like we're advancing into the future. Scientists will be able to record statistics for a population's bodily factors and use it to perform experiments and create new medicines to cure more diseases.

    4. I looked at the Proteus site, and found that they're developing a pill that can monitor medication intake, heart rate, rest, and activity.

  13. 1. It is a stretchable sensor that will be able to monitor heart rate brain activity, and blood pressure.
    2. I don't think that this is a good piece of technology for the reason that I think this is an invasion of privacy. I don't want big corporations looking in to my health and exercise regiment and use it to try to sell me things.
    3. "Make no mistake about these companies’ ambitions. “Ultimately, we see ourselves as a part of the healthcare ecosystem,” Amar Kendale, MC10’s VP of market strategy and development" I think that this is some complete BS! These big companies care nothing about our health or well being. The only thing that they are doing this for it to make money using our personal information. A world where no one has privacy is not a good world at all.
    4. I looked at an article on apples patents and how this could have cluse on what the new apple products could be.

  14. 1. It is a sensor that can be used to monitor blood and brain activity in the human body.
    2. Yes because it could provide nessary data to succeed in all three categories.
3 “data will need to be shared seamlessly between customers, providers, and payers in order to reduce heathcare costs and simultaneously deliver the best possible care.” It is a benefit to society due to the fact that america will get the best healthcare for the least amount of money.
    4. Nike fuelband is a way for athletes to discover how hard they work therefore benefiting the work rate of that athlete.

  15. 1. The article talks about a sensor/computer chip that can be used to monitor biological functions and levels of various substances within the body. It also mentions the issues that this sort of technology might raise.
    2. I'd say the answer to all of those is yes because it allows you to monitor things that otherwise can only be speculated.
    3. "If this kind of information exists for a lot of people, it is arguably folly to not look for larger trends and patterns." I think that this can be a detriment to society as people have a right to privacy and when corporations and researches have access to personal information, however valuable, it becomes an issue of privacy.
    4. I find it really interesting that we are now capable of measuring peoples activity levels throughout their lives.

It can benefit society as it can store medical history and information, which could allow for faster medical response and saving of lives.

I found the reason this was invented and all i have to say is nice job for inventing this.

  21. 1. It is a computer chip type thing that can be/ will be able to travel through your body in the form of a pill, or gather information via implanted into the skin, a tattoo, or within clothing. This chip will communicate with other technology to show a persons medical state, such as heart rate or medical conditions.
    2. I believe this could be beneficial for me and my health. I am a diabetic, so it could be amazing if by having the chip in me I would not have to poke my fingers for a blood test. Instead I could hopefully just see whatever the chip sends the data to and correct my blood sugar levels. It would also be nice not having the doctors always wanting to check how my kidneys are functioning via blood samples
    3. The quote that stood out to me was, “data will need to be shared seamlessly between customers, providers, and payers in order to reduce heathcare costs and simultaneously deliver the best possible care.” Either they writers made a spelling error or I need to widen my vocabulary. To my knowledge, “heathcare” is not a word. This makes our society look uneducated. The New York Times should have well educated writers and editors, and if they cannot find a simple spelling error it makes them look bad.
    4. I learned that the Proteus Digital company makes a pill with a sensor in it that people can take. This pill can map out a persons glucose levels. This makes it easier to stay in control and manage a diabetics health.

  22. 1. This is a bar-code like tattoo that monitors vital systems like blood pressure, clots in the blood stream and other important things that your body does.
    2. This device is not very helpful for me personally because I do not have many health issues, but I can see the benefit for people with conditions or the elderly having this and being able to know that they are safe. This could be good for sports, by letting coaches and other players know when you should sit out or if you are faking an injury or something. It would also be good for the potential of raising a family because then you could know what you are up against with diseases you carry and other things.
    3. "Proteus says its customers will own their data and may share it, but must also grant the company permission to use it for product development and the cultivation of its data sets." This jumped out at me because it says that the users own their own data personally, but the company can use it too.

As for raising a family, it would be helpful for parents as it could let parents know if a child is sick, if they are keeping themselves healthy, or if they have been abusing substances that can be found by drug test, an excellent parenting asset.

  30. 1. It is a tattoo like sensor that you put on your skin and it is suppose to monitor all sorts of things, like for example your heart rate and biological information.

    2. It is a great advance in our technology, because this new technology would be very beneificial to us. For example athletes could find this very useful for keeping track of your weight loss and how many calories you burned for that certain amount of time you worked out. Parents would find this useful for their children incase of illness and if something was ever wrong with them, their parents could tell and help them out.

3."Powered by your stomach fluids, it emits a signal picked up by an external sensor, capturing vital data." This could be seriously benefifical to our society, because this little sensor can capture vital data and we can see what is going on with our bodies.

  31. 1- This new type of tech is a device that pretty much scans your blood and different survival rates in your body.

2-I think that this device will be not only a HUGE step in the future for the future care for your body, but will possibly increase life spans and even stop infections and viruses from forming into things like cancer. For sports it could detect when the player is being pushed beyond their limits and prevent possible injury. As far as raising a family goes, the only way that this could be helpful is if it scanned your blood for things such as Aid's and prevent you from having children.

2.) The advancement has its pros and cons, your personality may change do to normal changes in activity that can cause the people to become Hypochondriacs. This will help your health, it will provide the info needed to conduct research and improve health like heart rate before heart attack. Monitoring your body in sports is a necessity, with this device it will be easy to supply the right materials that your body needs to appropriately manage your body based on its info gathered.
