  1. 1. STEM Students and Teachers Achieving Reform (STEM STAR) is an innovative approach to lasting and transformative improvements in STEM teaching and learning. STEM STAR will improve STEM learning in five rural high schools in North Carolina and Louisiana and build on previous studies to strengthen the evidence that when students and teachers take ownership of the change process, academic success follows.

    2. The STEM program in North Carolina and Louisiana is an approach to teach science, technology, engineering and math in a better, longer lasting way. The idea is that students will collaborate with each other on projects based around technology that will also create learning communities within the schools. If this project is academically successful, it will strengthen the idea of change as beneficial.

    3. I believe the overall mission statement of GenYES is to incorporate technology with our education system and use the devices we have designed to improve the way teachers instruct lessons in schools.

  2. 1. Dr. Dennis Harper taught in the West African country of Liberia during the 1970s. In 2005, after 25 years of civil war, the country was in ruins and a generation of children had been lost their childhoods and opportunity for education. Generation YES worked with Liberian educators and President Ellen Sirleaf to design, build, and fund a Liberia Renaissance Education Complex. More than $1.1 million was raised and over 5,000 hours donated to ensure Liberian children receive the 21st century education necessary to achieve a peaceful future.

    2. The plan of giving proper education to countries who have been struck by the ravages of war is a benevolent one, and one that is beneficial to the society as a whole. With proper education they can create not just a future for themselves, but a future for the country as a whole.

    3. I personally believe the overall mission statement of GenYES is not just to educate youth and teachers in the world of technology, but to bring that technology to the forefront of education.

  3. 1. Generation YES is led by Dr. Dennis Harper. Dr. Harper has been an international leader in the educational technology field for more than 35 years. He wrote the first college text on computer education, RUN: Computer Education while a faculty member at the University of California. Dr. Harper has taught in universities around the world and has been instrumental in bringing the first computers into schools in numerous countries. These experiences led Dr. Harper to develop the GenYES model.

    2. Dr. Harper has many years of experience under his belt. He has written college level text about computer education and used that knowledge in developing GenYes. He has also been a key leader in putting computers in the classroom, not just in America, but all over the world.

    3. Technology provides never-ending opportunities to benefit students. Utilizing it, opens doors to brighter futures and helps achieve the school's goals. So GenYes was created to do just that by using the extensive technological knowledge found in most students to revolutionize teaching techniques.

  4. 1.Generation YES and The After School Corporation (TASC) partnered to design a full-day workshop for New York City teachers entitled "Students and Adults Partnering for Success." The workshop taught site-level personnel how to involve young people in meaningful ways at every level of capability. Participants learned practical ways that students can be taught to contribute to the overall success of any after-school program.
2.This program is helping the students service their school in ways that far exceed being a normal student aide, by doing this the student feel a sense of accomplishment and by extension like their school more.
3.GenYes is all about empowering school's students and faculty with knowledge pertaining to technology and leadership skills. By pairing teachers with their students and learning together, we are all on the same page.

  5. 1.The question is how to harness the students' technology expertise and at the same time, expand their learning opportunities. This scaffolding method, of taking what a student already knows, and building on it, is one of the basic tenets of educational theory, and has been proven time and again in research and in practice. How to take this theory and make a real working model out of it was the heart of a Technology Challenge Grant application submitted in 1995 by Dr. Dennis Harper, the Technology Director of the Olympia Washington School District… The goal of this grant was to document and prove that students could do more than just provide free labor and fix computers. Student projects could be authentic, meaningful improvements to the school technology goals - if the students understood what the school technology plan was, and were taught about pedagogy and learning. These projects could empower the student to participate in their own learning, and impact the learning of other students. Students could be part of the school-wide goals of infusing technology into the school, and therefore become full stakeholders in the process.

2.Students who knew about technology needed a way to expand on the knowledge and experience they already had, but the opportunity to do this within the structure of the public school system did not yet exist. The problem was tackled by Dr. Harper who established a grant to find a system where students could build on their knowledge of technology while using what they knew for tech support within their own schools. Dr. Harper showed how students could take charge of projects and directly take control of their and their peers’ education.

3.The mission of GenYES is both education and incorporation of technology in schools. It teaches students to operate, develop, and make the best uses of available technology in a school environment. GenYES aims to progress schools into the next generation and use all the existing tools to improve education.

  6. 1. Students represent more than 90% of the K-12 education population, and they likely possess 95% of the technology expertise in the school. Unquestionably, they are 100% of the reason that schools exist. However, they are often left out of the equation when we plan, discuss and implement educational reforms. There is no question that the technology innovations of the last several decades have not been integrated into most schools in a way that satisfies anyone. Why is this so? We believe that it is because the largest group of stakeholders in the process has been ignored - the students.

    2. Students are a major group in the school system, yet they are often not consulted on matters of educational reform. They are some of the most valuable resources of technological information, yet they are not considered when a school plans to make major moves technologically. Many new innovations in technology have occurred with very little done by the school systems to implement them for one main reason, there is no consultation with the students.

    3. The mission of GenYES, is for students to learn more about technology while at the same time, implementing those new ideas into the classroom. Students can also assist teachers if they have any trouble with the technology in their class. GenYES hopes to help bring schools into the technology age with the assistance of the students knowledge and skills.

  7. 1. In time, GenYES students start to work on Teacher Assistance Projects (TAPs), helping teachers throughout their school use technology in classrooms. These TAPs are requested by teachers when they need help with technology. TAPs can be simple tech support requests or requests for a GenYES student to help plan and create a larger curriculum technology project that the teacher wants to use in their lessons.

2.Taps are a huge part of genyes, they are very important to helping the teachers out on campus.

    3. GenYES is an innovative program that creates 21st century leaders and learners. GenYES students help teachers use technology in classrooms, supporting effective technology integration school-wide. Fourteen years of research proves GenYES empowers students and changes the way teachers integrate technology in their lessons.

  8. 1. The question is how to harness the students' technology expertise and at the same time, expand their learning opportunities. This scaffolding method, of taking what a student already knows, and building on it, is one of the basic tenets of education, and has been proven time and again in research and in practice. How to take this theory and make a real working model out of it is the secret of GenYES.

    2. So true, I think its up to us as students to teach those none technical humans out there a little more of what we know and even keep learning about technology.

    3. The mission of GenYes is to have students start teaching our community more about technology.

  9. 1. "100% of advisors agreed that TechYES is a good way to ensure middle school technology literacy.
    * TechYes advisors, peer mentors and students felt that there was significant positive change in the knowledge and skills of all those involved in TechYES.
    * Advisors saw growth in their students' technology skills, in peer mentors' skills as effective leaders and tutors, and in their own abilities to teach technology.
    * Advisors reported a significant improvement in their own abilities to teach technology and use project-based, collaborative methods. "

    2. Although this is talking about TechYes and not GenYes because we clearly know GenYes is better :) I think it says some really important facts. One of them being that TechYes obviously helped the teachers students significantly with technology. I'm not surprised because it's a great program and starting with younger kids is amazing.

    3. I think the overall theme of GenYes is to help students aspiring to learn more about technology and become more involved with it at their very own school. So, while the students are such experts, they are doing sort of a two job class without knowing it because they are learning and having fun while also giving back to the school in unrecognizable ways.

  10. 1. GenYES is the only student-centered research-based solution for school-wide technology integration. Students work with teachers to design technology-infused lessons and provide tech support. GenYES students learn life-long technology and leadership skills and teachers benefit from on-site, sustainable technology integration support.
    2. GenYES is a class that has students work with their teachers to create a lesson using technology. Teachers and students will all benefit from this.
    3. I believe that the overall mission statement of GenYES is to incorporate technology into our everyday learning, and not only teaching the students about technology, but our teachers as well.

  11. In TechYES, students show technology literacy by creating projects that meet state and local technology proficiency requirements. As part of TechYES, a structured peer-mentoring program assists the teacher or advisor, and provides student leadership opportunities that serve to further strengthen the program and enrich the learning community....

2: This program is to get kids to help teachers with technology and also too get us to help the community learn about our tech world.

3: To put technology in our schools. Have kids and the community to know more about technology and help others like teachers and others.

    2. The teacher assisted projects are a way for students in Gen Yes to help and educate teachers in technology. They also serve as a way to help the teachers understand that technology is a good resource in their curriculum. The TAP’s also influence the teachers to use that same technology more and make it a part of their classes.

    3. The mission of Gen Yes is to educate students and teachers in the use of technology in the classroom. This helps modernize the school system and also supplies new tools for students and teachers to use in the school. They do this by using the student’s knowledge and ability to help the school by creating a more modern curriculum.

  13. 1) College YES is a 5 year federal Department of Education Investing in Innovation (i3) federal grant. Working with the Alliance for College Ready Public Schools in Los Angeles, Generation YES will implementa Student Technology Leadership program in the 17 Alliance middle and high schools to support the goals of grant. Generation YES will also provide training, site support, an online web environment with proven resources, new tools related to CollegeYES goals, and an online community aimed at increasing communication among Alliance schools.

    2) Genyes is a terrific class for middle and high school students that have an affinity for technology but when they graduate they are forced to look for college programs that match the level and scope of Genyes classes. This program is a great way to further the passage of students in Genyes and allow them to continue with the unique hands on experience they have in the high school. It further prepares them to enter the workforce with the necessary skills to succeed in technology oriented careers.

    3) The mission of Genyes is to give kids a change to fully embrace technology and partake in education that goes beyond fact memorization and regurgitation. It teaches kids how to be independent in both trouble shooting and project follow through that are essential in the real world.

  14. “Although not all American adults feel this way, the United States seems to have more respect for the rights of parents, schools and authorities than it does for the rights of children. And this includes control over what children can see and where they can express themselves by limiting access to certain websites including (in the case of schools) social networking sites. And while I fully understand the inclination to protect children from inappropriate content and disclosing too much personal information, adults need to find ways to be protective without being controlling. That’s a tough balance but one worth thinking about as we struggle for ways to parent and educate in the digital age while respecting the rights of young people."

I think that this paragraph says it all when it comes to being over protective. I think that most parents are over protective because they don't want their kids to make the same mistake as they did when the were young.

I think that GenYes allows kids to put their knowledge to good use by letting them help others with their technical problems.

  15. 1. Schools hoping to provide up-to-date technology opportunities to students often face a no win situation. As they try to encourage
innovative uses of technology by students
and teachers, this creativity hits the so-called
“bleeding edge” of technology. Lacking sufficient bandwidth, and thus unequipped to dealwith anything out of the ordinary, less imaginative, overworked technical support staff
may unintentionally end up discouraging the
provocative use of technology. They find themselvestaking a defensive, circle-the-wagons
Maintaining a thriving, leading-edge learning environment requires a reliable base of tech support. But building that base is no easy task.
Students thrive on being given responsibility
    for improving education using technology.
‘Without the students, we couldn’t possibly
afford the level of technical support
our teachers have come to rely on.”

    2. I feel that this paragraph is stating that some schools just dont have the resources, thats why we all are lucky to be part of it at Shadow, because adults are jumping at the idea of a tech filled school here. The paragraph is saying that some schools just dont want to give the effort too. They are also saying that teacher are not as advanced as the students, therefore our job is in a sense to help them so they can help themselves.

    3. I feel the mission of GEN YES is not only for us to spread the word on technolgy and to even learn more for ourselves, but it is to help others so they can help others. We are here to make life easier i guess, it ia always nice to have someone who knows what they are doing around, which brings me to being a leader. BEing a leader is required in this program because we have to guide others to and understanding..

TAPs can be simple tech support requests or requests for a GenYES student to help plan and create a larger curriculum technology project that the teacher wants to use in their lessons.

    2. GenYES takes a huge role in helping teacher with project or problems with a computer and its software.

    3. TAPs help teachers understand what GenYES is about and how they can help them inprove the classroom or just help understand the software.

With a strong research base and 14 years of experience, Generation YES projects and programs offer win-win solutions that benefit students, schools, and communities.
    >Its good that GenYes has 14 years of experience so they know what there teaching
    >Its also vary cool that we solve problems in or school and community with technology because we almost never use technology in other classes around school

  18. 1.The GenYES student participates in a GenYES class or club at their school. In GenYES, students not only learn technology skills, but also collaboration and project management skills. They learn how to support the technology in their school, and how technology can be used in the learning process. They learn how to be mentors and leaders in their school by taking on responsibility for helping teachers use technology in every classroom.

2.Kids taking GenYES learn technology skills and find ways technology can be used for leaning. They learn how to take a leader role for projects and also help teachers as well as students when they have a problem.

    3. GenYES helps you learn skills you need in life such as learning how to fix problems and how to work with people. It also helps with management skills where it be with time on a project or managing a group of people to work together.

  20. The blog won't let me post for what ever reason,
but I don't want to just blow off the assignment.
So, here is my blog post.

    Peter Gruber wrote:

    1. "New requirements of the No Child Left Behind legislation mean rethinking strategies for success.
What creative solutions are schools and districts turning to?" In the June 2003 issue of Technology
& Learning magazine, Gwen Solomon explores 12 proven strategies used by schools all over the country.
Our favorite? "Strategy #8 - Relying on Students". "On average, using GenYES services runs
about half the cost of the next low-cost option, online courses."

    2. I can't believe that Gen YES, on average, is cheaper than the increasingly popular online courses.
I would have thought it was the other way around. I also agree on the statement that no student should
be left behind because they can not perform at the same speed as everyone else. I have been in this
situation, and the first person I would go to is a fellow student. I would do this because I could better
relate to someone my own age. Gen YES is definitely taking a step in the right direction to help the
    average student succeed.

    3. I think the mission of Gen Yes is to bring schools up to speed with the newest technology, and how
to utilize it. I don't think we fully understand the versatility of what we have at our disposal, and it is up
to Gen YES to figure it out.
