7. Innovators

Who do you think is the coolest?  Why?

There’s more than one way to read these stories. Sure, the subjects are inspiring and creative people. But these are not merely personality profiles. They also illustrate the most important emerging technologies of the moment.

A short blog for a short week.

One question, but elaborate about why you chose the person that you did.

Happy vacation this week and be inspired!

  1. I chose the second person on the list, Lars Blackmore. I chose Blackmore because he seemed to have the most interesting ideas in my opinion. Blackmore is trying to reuse rockets, instead of throwing them away after one launch. If Blackmore could pull this off it would save the space programs insane amounts of money, which would give more money to the government to invest in something other then space programs. Out of all the people on the list I chose Blackmore because it seemed like he could help a lot in investing money.

  3. I think that most innovative person on the list was Jeannette Garcia. It was really difficult to choose which person's innovation was the most useful because they were all pretty amazing. She has created a new material similar to plastic that can be used to replace out current plastic that is stronger and recyclable. First of all, if this idea is expanded upon there could be the possibility that a plastic-like material that is as strong as steel and that is recyclable could replace metal materials used to manufacture vehicles and other metal-demanding products. Second, the material is stronger so we could use it to replace the plastic used in current plastic items so with things like plastic toys or the casing on your phone would last longer because of the durability. Third, the material is easier to recycle than current plastic so we can easily recycle the substance with no worries. Don't worry, be happy :)

  4. Zhen Gu, I appreciate that he is researching the a way to make injecting insulin more convenient and comfortable. He made patches that you place on your skin that injects insulin, rather than a needle. I have a friend who has type 1 diabetes and she hates having to pull out a giant needle every time before she eats. Its painful, annoying and embarrassing. I am going to introduce my friend to Zhen Gu to she if this is something she would be interested in.

  5. Gozde Durmus., as cool as everything looks and seems it seems flawed, as in dead cells do not become cancer cells, cancer is when the cell is building to much of the cell to quickly like a regeneration but instead can kill you depending where the tumor is ( areas where the cancer is spliting to much)
o my question is, Where did she get this info from, yahoo answers?

  6. Rohan Paul managed to create a sensory walking cane for people with blindness. Many people with blindness can be afraid to do walking around alone even thought they have their cane. What Rohan did was extraordinary, yet simple. By engineering a cane with a sensory system that vibrates near obstacles, Rohan created something that affects many people. You can customize the colors when you buy it, and also can retract to fit in a purse. I really like this product because even though blind people don't make up a large part of the population, people still need to be taken care of. This product can be life changing.

  7. I chose Yevgen Borodin because he created a way for blind people to surf the web on there own. His software (Capti Narrator) helps blind people look at sources from Dropbox, Google Drive, Web pages, and e-book. The main reason why I chose him was because he made a software that can help people that are blind. There are many people who would not do this, but he did and I find that amazing.

  8. 1.Jamie Shotton why a man who was called in to Microsoft in a secret team working on a new video-game control system of moving meant with individual human body parts in a video stream and allow people to interact with a game using nothing but their bodies but Jamie Shotton think that to show distant than color to the motion sensor for Xbox360 but it had a step back because Jamie hand gesture control software was debut in HoloLens Microsoft's forthcoming augmented-reality device but Jamie was working on something thing different allowing even basic depth-sensing webcams to interpret subtle hand movements to let the user can zoom in with a simple pinch or a password using nothing but hand signals.

  9. I choose Gozde Durmus as her invention will save thousands of life in coming years. Her invention of levitating cell to know their kind like if they White Blood Cell ( WBC) , RBC or they are cancerous cell; So now instead of waiting days for medicine to react, you can know that same information within an hour with that invention. So now on doctors will be saving atleast 24 patients around the world in a day with that technology, and most important thing it take her less than a $1 to make the magnetic microgravity on a chip cell detector which is extremely cheap in medical field.

  10. 1) I chose Jamie Shotton because he made something that gained him a lot of attention from big companies, like Microsoft. He wanted computers to identify different objects in a moving video. His plan was to divide the pixels into segments according to segments, for example separating a goat from a field or a bookshelf from a desk. He gained a massive amount of attention from Microsoft that they personally called him up to join a secret team that waqs creating a game system that only needs your body motions to interact with the game/console. That system is what we now know as the Kinect.

  11. I choose Jamie Shotton he's invention give a new way the computer can see the world he made the computer be able to identify different object in a moving video. by dividing pixels into segments according to color the software could separate. Jamie realized that instead of using segment for color he thought the movements like the camera from the kinect.

  12. I choose Cigall Kadoch because she found a possible way to cure cancer, or certain types by replacing parts of a cell that are not working properly with working parts, killing off the cancer cells. She may have discovered the answer to cancer.

  13. Out of the list provided, my favorite innovator was Rikky Muller. She is researching implantable devices that could interpret and disrupt signals in the brain that cause mental disorders. I chose her because her research combines two things that are of personal interest to me: neuroscience and technology. Her innovation could have endless applications. Through this device and research, she could help cure certain mental illnesses. Even if she cannot cure them yet, she could collect valuable data about how they function within the brain. On a larger scale, the device could study how the brain functions as a whole and how it interacts with the body. For as important as our brains are to our lives, there are still quite a few mysteries that we’ve yet to solve. Because I am looking to study neuroscience in college, Muller’s ambitions are something that I would certainly support.

  14. 1. I would say in my opinion the most inventive person is Lars Blackmore. I have always been a fan of space and space travel, so for someone to think of a way to fix one of the biggest problems with space travel, cost and litter. He thought up that, it would be a lot cheaper if we could reuse rockets, instead of dumping them in the ocean after launch, then it would be a lot cheaper. So with the necessary software and an ocean platform, He made a way for the rocket could land backwards on the ocean platform, which sounds nearly impossible,(based on my experience with Kerbal Space Program), that's impressive.

  15. Out of the list of innovators, Zakir Durumeric is the most impressive beccause of his practical pursuit of internet security. Bad security systems in the last few years have caused billions of dollars in damages mainly with the release of clients personal information. Durumeric pinged every device connected to internet and discovered some easily fixable flaws within security systems and shared his fixes with major companies. His actions can keep our personal information safe next time we log online.

  16. I believe that Yunji Chen is the most impressive, because he not only entered collage at 14, but is trying to further human technology and artificial intelligence by taking the massive, expensive technology Google has and simplifying it so that the everyday smartphone can be as smart, much like my grandfather.

  17. Of all of the innovators on the list, I think one of the best ones would have to be Patrick Collison. While there are many great innovators and innovations that they are involved with out there, a great one is Stripe. This is because it gives people a secure way to make online transactions. In my experience, I have bought quite a few products online, whether they are digital content or just ordering something to be delivered to my house. It is great and different from others because it allows for businesses to have a form of transactions for their online products, while keeping the customers’ and businesses’ banking information safe. This is important because nobody would be willing to purchase stuff online if they could have their payment information stolen, and that would just ruin the online market, which has a huge part in the overall economy.

  18. I think the coolest innovator there was was Richard Lunt. He has invented invisible solar cells that we can use in place of regular solar cells if the right amount are used. They may have a smaller charge than regular solar cells making it not to so great for everything but a few phones and small devices that are able to use them effectively, but these cells are able to be place right on a screen so that they absorb energy for the phone anywhere. He is working on making them much better than they are now so they can be used for more of our electronics and be more useful for larger devices. I think he is paving a new road for a different kind of energy use that may even be good for the environment. I'm sure many more are trying to expand on the idea and invention of these invisible solar cells to find a new way to use solar energy.

  19. In my opinion, one of the coolest innovators is Jamie Shotton. He worked with developing a way for computers to distinguish between different objects like separating a sheep from a field. He was able to work with Microsoft on creating the Kinect while it was in its early developmental stages. That would be a dream job for me. Also, as our society gets deeper and deeper into a fully automated world, it would be important for it to distinguish between an empty background and a person. This kind of technology is being applied towards the Microsoft HoloLens and will probably be put towards technology in the future.

  20. I think Travis Deyle is the coolest, because he can build robots that can be controlled wirelessly that can defuse bombs without risking someones life and it can be used for war or even helping old people get around safely.

  21. Out of all the innovators on the site I think the coolest is Saurabh Srivastava. One of the problems that still around today is limited literacy. People with limited literacy don’t have the ability of obtain information like everyone else. Srivastava can change that with his idea. With Voice and gestural interfaces people with limited literacy can easily figure out what they need to know. Another good thing about Srivastava’s idea is that it could also help the medical business. In Srivastava’s recent work he helped with a system that showed pregnant women that might have medical problems with free tests or services. Srivastava’s idea can help a lot of people with reading/writing and help the medical business.

  22. I found Jimi Kim to be the most inspiring for how large of a background she has in the Health care buisness. At the age of 34, Her life might not have seemed interesting but it became more than just interesting. On November 2013 she recieved a call that was going to change her life couse from a awesome job at google to a awesomer job at the White house. And dont forget this was at 2am by the White house! Like that would be crazy! When this called was taking place, They had asked Kim to help manage Healthcare.gov for people that didnt have health insurance. She had made a site to help them get insurace. After long amounts of time, She had enrolled 8 million people get health insurance. She has wasted a marathon of hours and all of it for all these people and that seems like a miracle to me. Kim later on gained insight that had eventually made crucial of her own Health care analytics company

  23. I found Lars Blackmore to be very cool because it will be easier to space travel if rockets were made that could be reused over and over again. They are trying to use software that will be able to make the rocket land backwards it would save a lot of money for space programs and make space travel more common.

  24. I think the interesting person I found is Rebecca Steorts. Mainly because she like History and she made a pretty nice reference to LoL by saying "Big data could cut through the fog of war." But I find her cool mainly cause shes a professor at Duke University. She also wants to help human rights witch is pretty cool beans. She found out that people were making "Database of Death totals". So in all total shes pretty cool in those ways in my opinion.

  25. I found out Bars Blackmore to very more because in this day today we have made one of the best successful rockets ever and since we made this rocket to explore our solar system like Mars, outside of Planet Earth. We discover lots of new things out their and I am surprise that we did all these research on the stuff about rockets and our solar system.

  26. Gilad Evrony is the most interesting person on the list in my opinion. I think he is interesting because I love learning about neurons. I think the human brain is so fascinating. He has found a way to pinpoint the specific error that might have gone wrong whenever someone has a mental disability, such as epilepsy. I want to learn more about how neurons interact with each other, and the work this man is doing seems so cool to me.

  27. Yunki Chen cause he is such an interesting person cause he is a iconoclastic and cosmopolitan, is sporting an untucked flannel shirt and sipping a mango smoothie at an Italian coffee shop in Beijing. He is talking about how he can make deep learning, a hot field of artificial intelligence, far more useful to people.

  28. Duygu Kayaman is really interesting because she has a really significant disability and she's still successful. She made an app for the visually impaired so they can still learn like any other kid. Dispite her impairment, she's a sales specialist for microsoft. She should be a role model to any kid, blind or not.

  29. 1.) I think one of the most interesting of the innovators was Rikky Muller, who made an invention that zaps the brain at correct times in order to fend off certain mental disorders. This caught my attention mainly because I am slightly interested in things like mental disorders, and the fact that this invention helps to keep them away is interesting because there can be a lot of good that can come from reducing the number of people that have a mental ailment that would be halted because of the device. The tech is now used clinically and it is theorized that it can pinpoint seizures in the brain, which in certain situations might possibly save someone.

  30. 1) I think CONOR WALSH is the coolest hes a 33 year old inventor/robotics researcher he has invented robotic running shorts that are soft, lightweight, and flexible so people can wear them to enhance their abilities. These running shorts are part of a exosuit for the legs. Sensors in the suit measure a person’s movement and then tell a motor to pull on cables attached to the fabric in order to assist the muscles at the right moment.

  32. 1) I think Adam Coates is the coolest hes 33 year old artificial intelligence developer who is also working on voice recondition software for smart phones. His goal is to make smartphone talking software better like your having a conversation with a real person.

  33. Rohan Paul because of his invention the electronic walking stick because it will help so many people in the world today plus its really cool.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jamie Shotton because I really like his idea of being able to interact with games. I think that that is really cool and it opens up a lot of new possibilities for the gaming industry. Even industries other than the gaming industry can use this technology which is really nice. I also like how he knew nothing about the project but took up the team on their offer and went after it. He tried his best and it really paid off. This is why I like Jamie Shotton.

  35. I pick Zhen Gu and just because I am diabetic. I pick him because I have always liked helping people and I like seeing people helping people. This patch he has come up with is amazing! It is such a cool idea and the way it works is creative to say the least. Injecting is time taking and cumbersome, and can be painful just imagine sticking a patch on your leg or arm and being on you way. TO BE CONTINUED!

No messy bags, no needles or pens, no pumps to worry about, and no getting caught out at 10 o'clock at night by a police officer with a bag full of syringes! (not fun) The way he is planning on solving this problem is different, creative, unique, and cool. That is why I chose Zhen Gu.

  36. I think Zakir Durumeric is the coolest because, after learning how to hack any computer connected to the internet, he decided to find a way to fix it so they couldn't be hacked, instead of doing something malicious. He was able to hack into bank safes, ATM's, and power plants, among other things, and instead of doing something like taking money or whatever else he wanted to do, he decided to inform people and website owners how to fix these bugs.

  37. I think Gilad Evrony is the coolest because he has done something very important. His discovery on how not all brain cells have the same genetic code and how this will help find a solution to brain disorders such as epilepsy and schizophrenia is really incredible. I also find it impressive that he found out how to decode the genome of an individual with neurons from cadavers and mapped the origins of the mutations he found. Very surprising that he managed all of that. This will probably hep a lot of people too, as well as researchers. Plus he has a beard so that automatically makes him cool.
