2 Website Design

Portfolio Websites!

Your website is your digital resume.  This week we will be designing websites.  Your website should reflect a digital representation of you.  Your personality.  Your interests.  Your projects.

This is an expanded blog project today since I am not in class. Please follow directions carefully.

This assignment is worth 100 points (50 Homework and 50 Assignment DUE TODAY).

BAD SITES: Open the link below.  Look and read about what makes a bad website:
GOOD SITES: Open all the links and explore each carefully.  What website styles appeal to you?  As you find sites that you like take screens shots of them.  Evaluate what sites that you personally feel are some great websites:

Number your responses in your blog answers:

1.  In the BAD SITES link, which is the worst website in your opinion?  Why?

2.  In the GOOD SITES links provided above. Which three websites did you find that you like the best?  Look at many!  Take screen shots of your favorites.
  • Open this link: Website slide show and complete as instructed
  • When you finish it place your slide show link as the answer to this question
  • We will look at your website choices tomorrow.

3.  What pointers did you read in the articles?  What makes a good website? What are the pitfalls and mistakes people make in creating websites?

This blog is DUE by the end of class period today.

  1. 1. Out of all the atrocities I witnessed blinkee.com was by far the most unholy. Not only is the midnight-black background in combination with the flashing colors enough to cause you to have an epileptic attack. But Half of the entire screen is MISSING!!! Also the merchandise they sell seems to parallel the quality of the site.

    3. I think its easy to mess up on a website, a very easy mistake is too much info, or too little. Also picking a nice color pallet and theme. There is so many steps that need to be taken carefully. A good site is one that is visually appealing with smooth animations, colors, and fonts. You also to have just the right amount of info not so much that the visitor is overwhelmed and not so little that the visitor is left confused.

  2. 1. The High School website was the worst because it had way too many links in such small font.

    3. A good site has to stand out from the others and have eye catching backgrounds. It is very difficult to make a site that people want to come back to so we have to appreciate the good ones and give the creators of the bad ones advice.

  3. 1.) My opinion about those websites is that they had creativity but lack professionality. They would be fun and all but these websites are just so.. boring… Like we want a website that is easy to read and easy to navigate. Like yeah its cool beans and all but seriously get real!
    2.) http://www.gnosh.co.uk/
3.) In this all I have learned that you need to make is organised and not splattered. You really need to keep it professional to keep its max coolness. Try to keep the colors in tight and not have goofy colors everywhere. So in all total try to keep your sites all clean and super easy to navigate. Also keep the font at a good level so people don't have trouble reading it.

  4. 1) I think that Ling's Cars is the worst website in my opinion. The website had too much going on and all of the different colors almost gave me a seizure. I also think that this is the second weirdest website I have ever been to but that is a discussion for another time...

    2) I think that Mixd is my favorite website. It has a simplistic design along with straight forward navigation. Mixd happens to be a website design company, so this is a wonderful representation of their products. The only thing that this website needs is a vending machine.

    3) Some pointers that I picked up throughout the websites are that we need easy to understand navigation and a matching color palette. With a matching design the website will look appealing to the eyes of he viewer. A good website also usually has easy an easy to navigate structure. Websites like Ling's Cars were confusing and hard to navigate while websites like Mixd were very easy to understand.

  5. 1.) Blinkee.com was definitely the worst for me, I hate having everything flashing like strobe lights. All the pictures are so small it's impossible to see them, and all they do is keep blinking. Very hard to look at.

2.) I have no idea why http://www.patimex.com isn't listed as a good website, its the best thing ive ever seen.
http://www.bondmakeover.com/ Bond Makeover seemed like a very good design, very appealing to the eye. But for some reason the site killed itself, and is now owned by a Japanese company that sells soaps and massage oils. k

http://www.distancetomars.com/ How Far is it to Mars? Is a REALLY cool website that is very nice to look at, as well as informative. Definitely recommend visiting this site.
    http://i.imgur.com/RduNpnH.png

http://aestheticapparatus.com/ Aesthetic Apparatus is a very cool site for art, commercial use, and printmaking. Its pleasant to look at as well as a useful service, it seems. Plus it has one of my favorite bands on the home page, Cake.
    http://i.imgur.com/ySeCFrd.png

3.) By looking at some of these sites, I realize whats appealing is mostly flat colors and geometric shapes. Plain and flat websites are "all the rage" right now.

  6. 1. These websites are extremely terrible, out of all of them I think that High School in mississipi was definitly the worst, the website was super cluttered and to separate ideas they did negative colors which looks terrible.

    2. https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1IAmuk0NF78nddKLEGzulWuCAd4UQeflsaYuccn72CsQ/edit?usp=sharing

    3. Some of the pointers I read throughout the articles are that its generally easy to make an mistake on a website without knowing it until someone else recognizes it. A good design and info on the site without being clustered makes a good site in my opinion. Some of the pitfalls on websites are the clustered material, having way too much information clustered on one page for no reason, another pitfall can be bad design and terrible colors to the humans eye.

  8. 1. Most of the websites I saw were poorly made but than I stumbled upon Penny juice it was a bright yellow which already started to hurt my eyes but later it was a whole rainbow and my eyes hurt badly the first page is almost blank.

  9. 1: WITHOUT A DOUBT http://www.patimex.com/ is the worst. I didn't even know it was possible to make my ears turn themselves inside out just by clicking on a link. Let me give you a demonstration on that song: "HERBUGABUGABUGAHABA!!!! *insert incomprehensible words probably in a different language*." On top of that, you can barely read the website title with the obnoxious flames going over it. And don't even get me started on the devil-coming-out-of-the-grill logo flashing bigger and smaller.

    2:

3:The key to having a successful website is keeping the colors and background not be distracting to the content of the website. This, in my opinion, is the most important thing you can do to make your website good. There is a lot you can do to make a website look terrible. Examples include over-packing, too little content, flashy and hard to read text, ect. It's all about balance.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. I think the worst website of them all would be the High School sports in Mississippi that reason being because there are just blocks of information thrown everywhere with all the wrong colors it just simply has a red white and blue theme with white text. Also everything is just smushed together with too much information the website literally has all the information on one page so instead of having categories for links leading to the desired info they just said "lets just pack the whole front page with information" so we can take a half hour trying to figure out specific information.

    2. https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1AQK8J9eIgsg0gb2bUfKEXiiYQBFDHbk4uBb1_Y7SHQw/edit?usp=sharing

    3. I know now that it is kind of a complicated process because you cant have too much info and also its all about the appeal and thats easy to mess up because you may add too many pictures or not add enough so its pretty easy to make your website bad

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1) In my opinion, the most disgraceful site shown was the Suzanne Collins Books website. The least they could do when creating the site was show a summary of the book. Give me some information like ow much it costs or where i can buy it. SOMETHING!

    3) A good website has some sort of a hook to intrigue you once you get on the website. Then information on whatever is on your website is obviously necessary. Determining how much is enough is a whole other story. The amount of information you have may appeal to some viewers and not to others.

  12. 1.) I feel like the worst site in my opinion was probably the Mississippi Sports one, since the colors were so badly matched together, it really reminded me of my website’s first drafts, which were so bad in comparison to how it is now. Plus the fact of having way too much information on just the homepage, links really would have helped in that case.
    2.)https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1FxEq2nA06oLON6SvgNioryIQ0i5T7TLIP1gZ7aABQ3Q/edit#slide=id.gb881eae15_0_35
3.) I mainly read some of the more general tips, such as color usage and layout of the sites. A website can easily be made bad in so many different ways, I know I have various problems with trying to change one thing on my site and it ends up removing my background picture, so it just takes a bit of trial and error before managing to get it right.

  17. 1. Ling's Cars, not only is it worse in my opinion there but it is also the best. I can see this site in a pop culter like Japan or somewhere where designs like that are common. But really, it's just a cluster to the eyes and is confusing. But it's because it's confusing is why it also makes it so great to me.

  18. 1. The judiciary committee website is without a doubt the worst of the listed website solely for the way it tackles important issues such as immigration and problems within the Capitol with GIFs. It looks more like a pathetic Tumblr blog than an official government website. There needs to be a certain degree of seriousness and professionalism in a website taking on issues of this caliber and that's the biggest thing this site lacks.

3.I've discovered that a website must have a certain theme and structure around them in order to be eye catching and successful. Important information or big articles should be front page while lesser articles should be stored lower or archived for later use in a working menu interface.

  20. 1. Within the link showing the bad sites, I considered Ling’s Cars to be the most vile website possible. One explanation for this was the constant movement on the screen. I could never focus my eyes on one thing, whether it was the chicken, the blinking title or many other weird and random objects. Also, the page just goes on and on. By using tabs, this person could have made their site much more concise and better. However, another downside was all the ads this site has. I had to search through the pictures to find what was actually relevant.

    3. One pointer that was quite important was being clear and concise. People don’t like to search around a site for the content they want. Another pointer was keeping your content in front of them. This became important to business sites as they want you to buy something so they have to make you feel like you need it. While both those pointers makes great websites, making sure your content isn’t too flashy and distracting is important as well. Another item that makes a good website is keeping the ads to a minimum as it distracts from your content. People who make websites fall into the pitfall of flashing things on the screen because it will grab attention. However, doing this with multiple colors and items becomes distracting and looks unprofessional. Also,it had the danger of triggering neurological attacks like epilepsy, causing your site to get a bad name. Another failure of people designing web pages is putting too many ads. People become overwhelmed when ads start popping up everywhere. Also, if your site had lots of ads, it becomes less reliable.

  21. 1. High School Sports in Mississippi is the worst site for me. Not only is it too long and plain looking, there are a ton of links everywhere with little direction or sectioning. To make it better, I'd personally have a link to each pitch scores so that everything underneath it will not overload the page.

    2. My favorites are RedRain, Distance To Mars, and Holler. RedRain has a mouse-scroll page system. It is also very beautiful to look at. Distance To Mars is a point and click website with only one place to click at first. It takes you from Earth to Mars, 3x the speed of light. Holler has a very simple design compared to the other two. To find out more on the site, you have to click the very bottom arrow to get to the next page, and has a very straightforward layout.

    3. A good website is simple and easy to navigate. If you have too many things (links specifically) going on, the viewer wont know what to look at and it will reflect badly on you. Colors are also a big matter. If there are too many colors or too few, you either wont find anything or everything will look the same.

  22. 1. I think out all the website. I think Ling's Cars was the worst because their was to much random this on it plus it had bright color. I got a headache from it. The website had too much ads and fake news report which is bad for the website that could led to slow process.

  23. 1. I think the worst website would be Lings's cars. It hurts the eye with its background and all its fake adds. It also doesn't focus on the main part of the website which is cars and you have to explore it to find the cars. Also at first glance you don't think its even a car site.

    3. Some pointers I read in the articles is that color is very important. Without good color someone may just leave your site due to it not looking good to the eye. Another thing is easy navigation, without it visitors won't know whats on your site. What makes a good site is easy navigation, good colors, and things that are about your site. I think pitfalls in making a site is that people don't focus on the topic of your site, but what it looks like (which is important). Also another thing is putting things unrelated to your site.

  26. 1. I thought that LINGsCARS was the worst because there was too much of the random art and pictures everywhere that had nothing to do with cars. Also it had its content super condensed and it is just a scary site. Plus we can't forget that there are fake ads and news reports and the sort and there was barely anything about leasing cars, at least it was very hard to distinguish where it was.

    3. Some pointers were that the page design should reflect the content of the page and should never be of something that does not relate to it and they should make the site easy to look at and navigate through before completing it. Good websites look and feel nice and are extremely easy to navigate to find what you are looking for. Also a good website may have some nice art that goes with the content of the site. Some people overdo it though and screw up their website thinking it needs something more while putting in random pictures and gifs.

  27. 1. The worst website I can see on the terrible websites page is Ling's Cars. Someone vomited rainbows on the background, and then in the middle there is a strip of blinking ads that threaten to blind you. It is impossible to even see what they are trying to say because of the rapidly blinking neon ads all over the page, in some of the worst fonts ever.

    2. https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1hNjwSSy-DdT5KKk3HsnDBJFiUvIP81g-mbtaDm5gYsI/edit?usp=sharing

    3. Some of the things that make websites not so good are lots of blinking lights, bright neon colors, and colors that really don't work well together. Some of the things that make a good website, as far as I can tell, would to just do something simple. Not something very complicated with a million different distracting things on the page, but something well designed, with good colors, that looks very good to the eye.

  28. 1. The “Yale University School of Art” website was simply appalling. On top of being a terribly made website with repeating backgrounds, odd color choice, and vary amacher design, the fact that is is made by one of the most highly rated colleges like Yale, an art college nonetheless is almost unbelievable

    3. The biggest thing in making a good website is making it easy to navigate. Make it clear what someone needs to do to get where they want to get. And use colors that compliment each other, but not too many. Keep it simple.

  30. 1. Out of all of the websites in the bad category http://www.hssportsms.com/ was my least favorite. It had no background information what so ever and most of the information that was on the website was not even accountable. No one visit that site unless you want to waste a good minute of your life.

    2. https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1efAT8KkLsvYy2_92zhPsegY-4_0NdGaV1Yc02kqDjBk/edit?usp=sharing

    3. A good website is well thought out and well spaced. There can not be too many distractions and the information needs to be readable. It cannot be boring either though. Images are what makes a website good. There needs to be relevant images but not too many.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. I really disliked the High School Sports in Mississippi because it just has text everywhere! It is just so disorganized that it is physically impossible to find what your looking for.

    2.https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1qoEouCj86I3dGIvlJfMgJnbVekwXwjBKUJJrlZgQlK8/edit?usp=sharing

    3. I read the major points in making a website good. For example, using only a couple colors that go well together. And also making sure that you size your text well so it's easy to read. You should also have a good navigation on your website so you can find everything your looking for relatively easy. It's the major things that make or break a website.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. In my opinion, of all of the bad websites, Blinkee.com was the worst one. The idea of putting a bunch of flashing colors on a pitch black screen is not easy to look at. It is too distracting from the actual products, which is supposed to be the main purpose of the website. Also, the fact that half of the screen is just unused and empty is really annoying.

    2.https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1hqmVTlZ2I8FX5nqidvBDVbSemUDKkRDvHJosJsytlb4/edit?usp=sharing

    3. When making a website, it is important to remember not to overdo it. It can be fun to put in tons of animation and colors, but it does not end up looking good. Use anything that may be distracting sparingly, such as gifs and animations. Also, use colors that compliment each other and blend well together. Do not make it hard to read or look at any page. Lastly, use the empty space divided well.

  33. 1. I want to say that Ling’s Cars is the worst just because it is so, “WOW!” However, even though Ling’s website is random and ridiculous, it is his own business. In my opinion, Yale’s University of Art website is the worst of the worst. This is a site that you are expecting to be serious. I mean, it’s Yale! You are met with a moving background that distracts you from everything else on the page. The text is all highlighted with a different color underneath because the background makes it so difficult to read. There were points where I couldn’t even read the text. The site is a little difficult to manage if you do not know what you are there for. A site for an educational institution should be easy to navigate and showcase the best of their work, not a gif of twirling dinosaurs.

    2. https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/1NxDf7ixhRc3zb8dYngw-hYcXukSe9crbS6rMeceXnZI/edit?usp=sharing

    3. You must know what you are trying to do with your website! If you want to ensure that your viewers will purchase something, make sure that the site is compatible with online purchases. Make sure that your sight is eye-catching but not distracting. Many people put too much thought into making their site eye-catching, that they take away from the actual content. The site is a reflection of you, or your business. You must make sure that is showcases your best qualities. And always, always, ALWAYS remember that the design is a method to acquire the content of the site, not the content itself.

  34. 1) personally me I thought Ling’s Cars was the worst because there's was way to much color and In your face stuff. there's also a lot of crazy advertisement, I kind of look like a website you would click on and you immediately would get a viruses. not to mention that weird Chinese guy all over the website. all the cars are the same just listed over and over again.

    3) the key to having a good website is not having to many bright flashing lights it has to have the right colors and enough info in what the website is about. also having a good fan base is good to getting connected with lots of social media. you might want it easy to navigate though.

    3. What makes a good website is good artwork and the mistakes that people make are not being there self just be yourself.

  36. The worst website in my opinion was the field sports in mississippi one. The page looks like a neon spider man exploded and hus guts morphed into a computer code and it hurts my eyes.

    3. What makes a good website is a colorful clean design with easy to click on things and provide easily accessible information. The common mistakes people make are hard to find information and a bad color scheme. Or it is simply plain.

  38. 1. In my opinion. I think that Lings car's was the worst design due to how much color they used on the sight.. if they were trying to get my attention, It worked. But not what they would really expect.

    3. What caught my interest is how you are able to use your own vivid imagination to build your site ( It just has to be school appropriate, of coarse ). Making a perfect site is close to impossible, Its just the thought that counts. Some of the mistakes people make are sometimes noticeable but they can always be fixed to make a great site for others to go on.

  39. 1.pennyjuice.com, it's just one that is so special and and terribly designed, that they had no intention of attracting people to the site in the first place. Literally the very first page is just empty space with a picture that anyone with a copy of ms paint could make, and then you go too "what is penny juice" and its just so hard to read due to all the random colors.

    3. websites are suppose to be a clean window that you can see your reflection, as well as product or information, not a window that has been shattered in one corner with the rest of it covered in different shades of vomit green paint splaterd on it with some clusters of cobwebs in the corner

  40. 1) The one I hated the most was the Yale University one, because the other bad websites were made by beginners and amateurs, but Yale's website was made by professionals specializing in art and design. Any art university having a bad website is humiliating, let alone Yale.

    3) A good website needs to be pleasing to the eye, invoke the intended emotions from the viewers, and guild the viewers seamlessly through to where they want to go. Many websites either have too much one one page, or too little, and add to it by picking colors that clash with each other.

  42. 1.) My opinion about those websites is that they had creativity but lack professionality. They would be fun and all but these websites are just so.. boring… Like we want a website that is easy to read and easy to navigate. Like yeah its cool beans and all but seriously get real!

  43. 1. In my opinion Ling's Cars is the worst site. It is hard to even explain or define why it is bad. Everything is Everywhere, and it all moves. You don't understand that statement until you see this website. Ling's Cars is a assault to all senses, and literally burns ever fiber of my being. But yet, I can't stay away from it, it is so bad and cringe worthy that it is fantastic.

    3. Out of anything I have learned is that if you think your website is good, It probably isn't. Ask people how it looks if you need help ask for it. Designing a website on Google Sites can be hard because of how simplistic it is, Just ask for help and don't stop till most people would say it looks good. Refine recreate, and make your website perfect.

  44. 1. In my opinion the worst website was lings cars because when you firs get on the website you cant even tell what the point of it is. Also there are so many graphics that you cant concentrate on the car information whatsoever.

2.the best site i saw was Red rain because the site was very simple and pleasing to look at its functionality is also very smooth an thought out

3.The most helpful tip i read was that the sites colors corespond with each other and are easy to navigate i also learned you should try to avoid underlining or highlighting to avoid confusion

3.ome of these websites looked nice and didnt cause harm to the brain or have viruses on the website its self.

  49. 1.) I think the worst website is http://www.pennyjuice.com/htmlversion/home.htm (MY EYES!) because of the color scheme, it just gives me a headache by looking at it, i mean its quite easy to read, but just too many colors at once.

    2.) https://docs.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/presentation/d/15UolgJVqZOu-SnWiGPa4kEC63Q7A50z7lJytHzDaOwg/edit?usp=sharing

3.) From what i have read, a site needs a good balance of colors, not too busy or too much movement, an easy navigation, and an artistic take on the basic website design.
