(S11) Travel Technology

Uber:  Innovation Travel Technologies  Uber's been in the news quite a bit lately.  What is Uber all about?

Part 1.  Describe Uber from one point of view.  Choose one, identify which one you are describing A, B, C etc  (No more than 5 student entries from any section.  Read to see what others before you chose):

A.  The drivers.  Who are they, qualified?

B.  The users.  Who uses this service?

C.  Who is the competition?  How is it affected?

D.  The dangers of driving or using / the cons

E.  The benefits / the pros of this service

F.  The way it works.  Describe in detail

G.  How is Uber different in the US vs other countries?

Part 2.  Explain how this might impact travel in the future overall.  Be imaginative!

    b) The people who use Uber are usually not able to afford a true taxi service, so they turn instead to Uber.
    c) The only major competition that Uber has is Lyft, which is different from Uber, as it allows their drivers to use the cars they already own.
    d) One example ties into Uber's workings; the score system. In order to get a better score, the drivers will sometimes give candy or some kind of small, easily given-away treat (like a pencil, notebook, *sex*), which they could potentially drug.
    f) A person with the Uber app selects what kind of ride they want and where they want to go, and the app sends out a signal to a nearby driver; the driver finds the signal, picks up the occupant, and takes them to their requested destination.

    2. This is an interesting concept, especially for preparing society for the eventual conversion of the taxi service to fully automatic. By the time taxis are made fully automatic, society will be used to the idea of sending for a taxi using your smartphone.

    1. Oh, whoops, I saw "no more than 5", I thought that meant I had to select no more than 5 topics to discuss... oops.

  2. 1. F: A customer will first download the Uber application if they haven’t already, create an account and link their credit card. Once they need a ride they can select which size of vehicle they need, and where they would like to go, and they will be given a fair estimate of what the cost will be. A nearby driver will be notified and come pick up the customer and drive them to their desired location.

    2. Once self-driving cars are lowered in price and become widely available it’ll be amazing to see what comes of taxi services, such as Uber. In the near future we’ll be able to have a car come pick us up using our handy dandy smartphones, and have it take us to our destination, without any possibility of accidents. Using our phones we’ll not only be able to order a ride, but pay for the service with a mobile payment system.

Any customer can easily order a taxi from their smartphone, and not have to worry about hailing one or calling one, and they can do this from anywhere. The drivers don't need to worry about fares being unpaid, or them being cheated out of their money, as all transactions are done online. Also, the business, and other imitation businesses, have made it so there are cars driving to smaller or poorer neighborhoods, which can help with some unfortunate people getting public transportation.

2.) Uber might make it so other forms of transportation are made to work towards the user. Bus stops could have an App that tells when there's people at a certain stop. I feel Uber is going in the right direction for public transportation. Maybe in the future we'll have taxis that are remotely called in, that are completely automatic and driver-less.

  4. 1. A: Uber drivers are just regular people you would normally see everyday. They become drivers the same way you would apply for a job. If they meet the requirements, then they become an Uber driver and that's that. You won't an Uber driver that doesn't know what they're doing.

    2. It's what the taxi system will be replaced by. Uber is a much more convenient means of getting from place to place if you need a ride. They are always just a button press away, and you won't have to hail them like a taxi or be lucky you can get one in time.

  5. D. According to LA Weekly, "A Superior Court civil lawsuit alleges that the ride-share company misrepresents its driver background checks and thus violates California business and professions codes. The filing also claims that Uber illegally picks up and drops off passengers at LAX while charging fees that prosecutors say are not legit". Additionally, Uber will not comply to injunctions from L.A attorneys.

    2. Future drivers could manipulate Uber, and illegally drive, while Uber does nothing about it. Suppose that I am an illegal driver with a criminal record, and you are a legal driver with a clean slate. I could use your information to get an Uber license, and Uber would never question me once.

  6. 1. d) Of what I read is the a couple of the uber cars got impounded of an airport and some of the drivers were being rude to the passengers. Also that the uber drivers drive drunk.

    2. Uber is a lot more cheaper than the taxis, Uber is about $17 and taxis are about $23 for rides. Think as time moves on, think that they might get rid of taxis and go with the Uber cars. The Uber is 40% more cheaper than the taxi. Also that you can do a backaround check on your Uber driver.

  7. 1F). After downloading the Uber app, if not previously downloaded the customer must create and link their credit card to an account. Once they need a ride they can select which type of vehicle they need, and where they want to go, and they will be given an estimate of the cost. A driver will be notified and come pick up the customer and drive them to their selected location.

    2. As soon as "self-driving cars" are lowered in cost and become widely available it’ll be incredible to see what becomes of today's taxi services, such as Uber. In the future we’ll be able to have a car come pick us up using only our smartphones, and have it take us to our destination. By using just a phone we will be able to order a ride, and pay for the service all with just an app based payment system.

  8. 1.F: Uber is an American international company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It develops, markets and operates the mobile-app-based transportation network also called Uber. The Uber app allows consumers to submit a trip request, which is routed to crowd-sourced taxi drivers. As of March 26, 2015, the service was available in 55 countries and more than 200 cities worldwide. Since Uber's launch, several other companies have emulated its business model, a trend that has come to be referred to as "Uberification".

    2. This can change transportation drastically. If you can have a driver at your assistance at any time then why own a car. This provides more driving job opportunities and very available for anyone.

  9. A.Uber drivers are as qualified as pizza delivery drivers, over 18 no traffic violations its pretty simple
B.The users are anyone who needs a ride but it was initially made so people who get absolutely wasted from drinking have an easy ride home.
C.The only competition would be taxi services they could very well go out of business.
    D.The same as a taxi
E.It is easy efficient and cheap
F.You download the app you press a button in the app and boom, nearby drivers go to your location and pick you up.It could not be more simple
    G.It is essentially the same
2.Taxis are basically screwed in the fact that uber is super easy to use and it is very cheap next to standard taxi services. Soon enough it will become even easier like being able to pre-plan a drive so you could tell a driver to be at your location at a specific time and they would know where to drive you

  10. 1. E: It makes using a taxi-like system very easy and much more convenient to the user. You can just order a ride, pay from the linked credit card (so you don't need it on you i believe), and have them drive you where you wanted.

    2. Taxi services gotta step it up or bring something new that is an alternative for this. Other than taxi's at airports, there's not much reason to have taxi's when there is Uber. Uber is much cheaper and convenient than a typical taxi or bus. It's like a personal driver.

  11. 1B. Uber is for people who want a transportation service that's easier and more convenient than taxis.

    2. I'd like to imagine that Uber is bringing us to a future where friendliness, happiness, and human cooperation is at an all time high. I'd like to imagine that, because of Uber, the human race will be sing and dancing and holding hands and crashing their cars and dying because they were distracted by all the singing and dancing and holding hands they were doing.

  12. 1.F. First a person who wants to be picked up by uber will use a app from uber to call a driver. The time and money will be calculated on distance and how long it will take to get there. You will have to put in a credit card. You will then arrive at your destination.

2.Being able to go distances without using your car could be useful. Maybe you will not need a car and it would just be getting pickup by uber.

  13. 1. C. Uber’s three major competitors – Lyft, Curb and Sidecar – are catching up. By coverage, Lyft appears to be Uber’s chief rival, with drivers in over half as many cities. In two cities, Lyft faces no major rival while Curb operates in four cities without a major competitor. Seven cities are now home to all four competitors: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, Charlotte, Seattle and Washington, D.C. . taxis are a competitor also

    2. this could impact the future for taxis drivers and then there would be less jobs in for taxis and more jobs for uber drivers

  14. 1.) E. There are many pros to this service, and they include: using your phones GPS to connect you to the nearest available driver, it's cashless because the driver is automatically paid with your credit card on file and the receipt is emailed to you; it has reliable pick-ups, you can track where they are and you receive a text once they've arrived. These are some of the pros to this service.

2.) This is a very efficient way of getting a ride, it's fast, easy, and practical. I see this becoming larger and larger towards the future. Uber is convenient and cheaper than normal taxi's, so taxis might become extinct and Uber could rise. Uber is already around the globe, and expanding (it's even in Hawaii).

  15. 1.} A- What is needed for people to drive uber is they need to be 21, and older. As well You must own a 4 door car that is year 2006 or newer in most cities* 2000 or newer: Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orange County, Providence, San Diego, San Francisco.
2.} Well it will changed how to get around, lets say you have to wait a very long time for a taxi, but with the uber app, you can find someone who will come, or is already near by to take to your destation, and it wont be that different from a taxi cab, since they are both friendly or not strangers that will take you where you need to go.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. B. The Uber app allows anybody with an internet connection to quickly call for transportation. In many cities, taxi cabs are a large method of transportation, but they aren't always there when needed. The innovation behind the Uber will quickly bring transportation to anyone, anywhere, quickly surpassing the flaws of the original cab system. All the users require is a connection to the app, which almost every individual has a method to do so. It is a convenient way to traverse long distances without a personal vehicle, and can be seen as a better service overall when compared to other transportation services.

    2. With the service being available to nearly all members of the population, the transportation business is quickly changing towards the new cab system presented by Uber. As anyone over twenty one can apply for the job, the availability of the service continues to rise. If more users continue to join the Uber system, the methods of transportation will be forced to change. Old taxi services will be left unused as other, more convenient, forms of transportation arise, beginning a new era of transportation. Everything will be connected, and some people may find the service more convenient than their current forms of transportation. With those points being the main focus of the Uber, other methods of transportation may decrease. Roads may be open more, while city congestion could decrease, the effects would change the everyday lives of everybody.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1f). Uber works in a way that is almost like a call in cab, anyone who has internet/wifi at the time can call up a cab from one of many drivers available. The customer only has to call and pay for the cab. It shows on the site that is creating many jobs for the average american that can drive.

2).This could be the new thing, instead of a taxi service it would just be a huge network of hundreds of thousands of phones connecting to other phones in the cars of the driver notifying them to pick up someone. This could be bad, becuase if the human race gets super lazy then they will decide to not pick people up.

  18. 1. first of all, I will be using this video for examples on my thots of Uber. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYDMceG2-g8

no. the background check is done by a third party that only consists of filling out your name, address, DL and SSN online. and thats all the check is.
People who either can't afford a better taxi or are looking to get laid.
The only real taxi company that competes with Uber is Lyft letting the taxi drivers to use cars they already own
These drivers are random, unchecked people who you really don't know anything about, thats scary.
There are none, this is nothing more than a company that does not belong in this world.
A person with the app decides that they couldn't do any better in terms of transportation and call over the type of ride they want
In other some countries that realised that, “oh, this is a bad thing” so they banned it.
    2. Hopefully, humanity realizes the mistakes it has made by making Uber, and that we are never doomed to repeat again.

People who may not afford to rent a limo company for Prom or a night of debauchery. A cheap and simple way to look good in a sports car or fancy car. People who dont want to get in a dirty taxi that has had hundreds of other people in the same seat they are in.
    2) It could deal a blow to conventional taxi companies or limousine rental companies. People can build friendships and network with the drivers or just pay them. There are few possibilities and controversies but it is sure that you can look good being drivin are in a bently for cheap with this service.

  22. 1. D : So It says that all drives have background checks, to make people safer. People or should i say drivers are checked and put on the streets after the tests. People give feedbacks on the drivers on the app. The drivers cant see the comment, but the company can. The drivers also have profile so you can know more about the person transporting you places. Fees are automatically so there is no trouble there. I think Uber is not that safe, I have my doubts about the drivers and such. I think its just one of those things I need to live with a grow with the times changing. Uber is a wave of the future.
    2. I think like anything when something new comes to play, things are replaced. Like phone booths and mobile cell phones. We as humans evolve. The question is, is this a good evolution. Will our technology and a new form of taxis, be good for people. Or is it just a new way to get a buck. I think it is a interesting concept, especially in a place like Phoenix with little taxi use.

D.) Just as long there are checks from time to time, it'll be fine.
2.) I think it'll become over run by another company that'll feature more. It's just part of the Business wilds. You make a great idea, another one takes it and adds more things to it and eventually the original company will not even exist in the subconscious area of people's brains.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A.) Uber does extensive background checks by checking if they have state, federal, or a state-to-state crime. They also keep checking and making sure that all their drivers are always qualified.

2.) It could change everything. It may be possible that eventually that when self driving cars are popular and a lot of people have them that you could just have your car pick you up where you want when you want. Which would be pretty cool to have because it can stop you from having to walk through a dark parking lot on a Friday 13th.

    ReplyDelete
  26. C. Who is the competition? How is it affected? As you know Uber is a taxi system accessible by anyone at anytime through an app/website.This would be extremely competitive to normal family owned or normal taxi businesses. Most people would just call this easily accessible company instead of taking the time to look up and call a taxi. This company offers much easier transport and unless other businesses can come up with better ways to be accessible than they will soon go out of business.

    2. This can change transportation drastically. If you can have a driver at your assistance at any time then why own a car. This provides more driving job opportunities and very available for anyone.

  27. 1. A. Uber drivers are volunteers who activate the app on their phones, then pick act as a taxi service and their clients send them a pick up request through their phones.

    2. I think this could create other volunteer apps for phones, things like handing out newspapers or public service. These apps would work similar to Uber, Volunteers are paid for their service hours.

    ReplyDelete
  28. A. Uber drivers are people who present their location on the app and act as taxis and are requested by clients who select the driver on the app.

    2. Uber can impact the world by creating a new form of transportation that can be accessed through a mobile device. This makes it easier on clients as they can choose which driver can cater to their needs more than a taxi driver.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. C The competition is Taxi's. Taxi company are greatly affected by this app because it takes many of their customers away from them. Instead of calling for a cab or simply waiting for one you can go on the app and see if anyone is near you and if they are you can tell them to pick you up.
    2. It can greatly effect us because many people might start taking advantage of this app and work full time and possibly make a lot of money or it can simply be as a second job. It could simply replace the Taxi's.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1) B: The users are usually people who cant afford and ordinary taxi so they get an uber instead because its cheap and effective to there purposes. They also may not have the time to wait on the side of the street for a taxi to come by that may already have people in it.

    2) It can greatly help the future of travel because all someone has to do is pull up the app and call for an uber taxi and one will be on its way in no time.
