(S9) Tablets vs. Textbooks

Digital or Physical?

In today’s digital world, many things are transitioning into an electronic or    online format, which is somewhat controversial. Check out: Tablets vs. Textbooks

1. What is a pro and a con for reading online?

2. Do you prefer to read a paper or online book?  Why?

3.  If you were running a school what would be your plan for textbooks and electronics...

52 comments:

  1. 1. A pro for reading online would be the possibility to store 3500 books within a measly four gigabytes that a tablet could possess. For a con, there’s the idea that tablets are a lot more expensive than a book, but it’s cheaper than buying several ginormous text books that you would have to lug around town.

    2. I definitely prefer to read online, as it’s quicker to find the information than if you were to search for hours looks for one little piece of information within a book’s pages. The books that we have at our school are also torn up and often missing pages, and there’s no possibility of that online, well unless you throw the tablet on the ground, than that’s another story.

    3. If I were a fabulous billionaire who owned a school, I would deck the place out with technology. During today’s age there’s no real point to killing trees and using their flesh for text books when you can store thousands of books on a tablet. With the use of tablets all assignments could be done online, with no need for silly papers, and still be easier to grade for the professors teaching said students.

  2. 1. Reading online gives access to more than just textbooks; it can also give access to lesson plans, extra resources, and visual aids to lessons, not to mention homework, with no need to spend the extra money on paper. However, if the free version of a program is used (which might happen at some point if the company does not provide an educator's version of the program), the program may be riddled with bright and distracting advertisements.

    2. As often as I can, I use the Gutenberg Project or a similar free online book library for many different reasons. The first reason is time saving; say you want to look for a quote, but you can't remember the page number... with a physical copy, you have to search page after page after page to find the quote, but with a digital copy, you just hit "Ctrl+F", type in key words from the quote, and you can copy it immediately.

    3. If I was starting my own school, I would not hesitate to make not just the textbooks paperless, but to make the entire bloody school paperless. Every student would have a tablet distributed to them at the beginning of the year, all of their textbooks would be downloaded directly to their tablets, they would all be up to date as it's easier to update a digital textbook than a physical one, and all of their resources would be completely digital.

  3. 1.) A few pros of reading books online would be that you can easily store a high number of books in a 1-2 pound piece of technology, whereas with normal books you would need each individual one weighing however much they normally would, and would be more difficult to carry around. A con would be the fact that not all schools would potentially have tablets replacing textbooks because some schools would have more money available to spend than others, which would lead to some schools getting them and some schools not.
2.) That would depend on the type of book, because normally I prefer reading out of a paper book just because I like certain things like actually being able to see the progress I make in it, and also because I would be able to access it faster when I have free time in class, unlike an E-book or something that would require it to go through start-up stuff and all that. However in the case of a textbook, I might prefer reading one online simply because reading normal textbooks are far more boring than reading a normal book.
3.) I would probably have something like if you have a device that is able to look at the textbooks that are being used, then it should be fine to use it, if not then a normal textbook would have to be used instead.

  4. [1] Definitly some pros to online reading, it saves tons of trees, since paper is made from trees. Two it can be way much easier to do, and less heavy since textbooks are heavy. Two cons that could happen is if the tablets came into play then, students could maybe not even paying attention to the lesson and do something way different. Second children could cut thru their work or cheat on a test.

[2]Well im between, both since I do read manga online but I do read hard cover books as well paper back manga so I just have to say both :/

[3]This is a tough question hmmm, well Can I say both? For tablet reasons they can go to the special education kids, and teachers because they could used that for many things and for us students just normal textbooks but if we lost them, maybe allow to use a tablet like a kindle for school work only.

  5. 1. A pro of online reading is less weight also easier access to materials. A con is that textbooks don't have to be recharged and don't require internet.

    2. My honest opinion, I'd prefer books to online reading because with a textbook I don't have to worry about losing a file or having an app crash, plus hardbacks are just fun to read for me.

    3. I'd have to say save the tablets for at home use for example, lets say a student has to miss coming to school because they're sick so instead of just laying in bed all day he/she can just take out their electronic device and catch up on what they're missing in class. Textbooks will be used the same way in your average class.

  6. 1. Some pros reading online, its saves lots of trees, paper is made from tees. Tablets are less heavy than the textbooks. Cons about online reading is that the tablets cost a lot more than the textbooks. Another con is that the table as apps so the students can be doing other things than focus on their work. Kids could also cheat on their test if they have the tablets at school.
    2. I like to read a paper book than a online. An online book you have to click to go to the next page when I rather flip a page from a paper book.
    3. Maybe both, I would give the students the textbook. Its better to have the textbooks than the tablet, the textbooks cost less than the tablets and that if you lose a textbook the school always have more textbooks. A tablet for me seems hard to replace since of how much the cost.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1.) Pros for reading online are less money overall, faster research time, more portable, less trees being chopped down, easier on students. A con might be eye strain but that's not that big of a con.

2.) I read a online book because its easier reading off a tablet is really simple and not difficult to deal with like books. With things like marking your page finding a new book being uncomfortable those kind of things.

3.) I would only have tablets for textbooks because its less room to store them, there cheaper to buy, and easier to manage. I would not have a single textbook because I don't need hundreds of textbooks taking up storage when a tablet would take up about one fifth the space.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1. There is an idea of implementing tablets for digital reading of textbooks in public schools, however there are some who oppose this idea and have some reasons for doing so. One of those reasons is, having tablets in schools would too distracting for the children. However implementing tablets and digital textbooks in schools come with, reducing the printing of paper for book.

    2. Reading online and reading a physical book have not a real difference of the impact of the literature to me. However reading online is easier to find books and buy them, it's also cheaper, so I prefer online reading.

    3. If I was running a school there wouldn't be much of a difference from any other school in the US, other than having a very neat and organized computer lab and provided tablets for each classroom for reading books for the class.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1.One major pro to using a digital book would be space.Having a crap load of information on a very small tablet.A con might be cost, supplying hundreds of irresponsible kids with tablets.
2.I like paper more since it is simpler and arguably quicker depending on who is using it.Also they are easier to obtain.
3.If i were running a school i would stick to paper since the government finds spending trillions on defense and militarization of the police i would stick to paper since tablets would cost a lot to buy and even more to replace since i know for a fact plenty of them would get taken

  10. 1. Some pros of reading online is improved standardized test scores and less weight. Some cons of reading online is that online devices are pricy, and are likely to be misused by students.

    2. I prefer to read a hard copy book. My reading comprehension is already bad, and it only gets worse when I read online text.

    3. If I ran a school, I would have hard copies of books. Kids already seem perfectly capable of bringing their own technology to school, and how would I be sure that they would use those devices for school? I would have a computer lab, but only for basic computer skills, such as keyboarding and website design. Classes like GenYES can wait for college.

  11. 1. The largest pro of reading online through a tablet device is obviously its mass amount of simplified storage. Long gone are the days of having to store book upon book on a giant shelf. Now, one can store thousands of books (based on their storage space) on an easily accessible tablet. Reading digitally also allows for one to get access to any book they wish rather than having to search around multiple libraries and book stores for an obscure book they wish to check out. The largest con for reading digitally is the chance of potentially losing all of those books you purchased if a hard-drive could malfunction or your device could be damaged. Though, if your books are stored on a cloud this shouldn't be a huge issue other than the pain of re-downloading your books. Many publishers also fear publishing digitally rather than traditionally due to piracy.

    2. I like to consider myself a connoisseur of comic books so my reasoning for how I read focuses on that. While I tremendously prefer actually holding a paper comic in my hands as I read, I find myself reading primarily digital comics for a multitude of reasons. When reading, I read on my phone so the transportability of my books increases ten-fold. I also won't be judged or looked at strangely if I look at my phone rather than carrying around comics (I don’t care much about this but it’s an added bonus). Probably the largest reason I read online (I always feel quite terrible about this) is because it allows me to wear an eye-patch, have a parrot, and steer a large ship when I can't afford what I want to read. Peg-legs are harming the comic industry tremendously and I hate being a part of it though it is currently my only means of enjoying what I love. I've told myself many times that once I have a decent income I will buy back every comic I have read without doing so.

    3. If I were to run a school I would most definitely not implement school-wide tablets. Students simply can't be trusted. Heck, I couldn't trust myself not to goof around and browse the internet rather than using the tablet for its intended purpose. Electronics are extremely expensive and not difficult to break. Textbooks are significantly cheaper and much more sturdy so I wouldn't have to worry about students harming or misusing tablets and costing my school large amounts of money. I may allow a small group of students in a class such as GenYES to use electronics, but for the masses to use anything other than monitored computers would be ridiculous. While it would be awesome, the majority of students could not be trusted.

    1. It costs about $175.00 to supply each high school student with paper textbooks. Cost is a comparable factor now.

  12. 1. The pros to reading online it is that there are so many books you could read. Even books you can't get in the US. The cons are that you can get easily get distracted and that staring and a screen can hurt your eyes. Over all I think the pros over come the cons.

    2. I like reading paper books more just because my eye don't get hurt staring at paper. Although if I was given the choice I would take an audiobook any day because reading makes me sleepy.

    3. I would make a plan where the student could choose Ebook or Paper book. If they chose Ebook they would have to keep there tablets on the desk at all times as to make sure they don't goof off. Based on whether or not we where reading together I let them choose audiobook as well. Ebooks could also only be chosen by student who are known to take care of school property and have a A or B in that class.

  13. 1. Reading online offers a wide variety of options not offered in paper books, including instant access to your entire selection of books on a singular device. On top of the variety, you can often mark or highlight digital books without damaging them, perfect for in the classroom. While digital books may offer a strong set of features over paper books, paper books feel more genuine. Paper books involve the reader more, separating them from the technology and situations in the modern day. Digital books may be a better selection for use in schools, but paper books are stronger for leisurely reading.

    2. A common crave for technology drives the modern civilization, and chances to cleave yourself from the addiction shouldn't be taken for granted. Paper books can often cost more, and generally are harder to come across than digital versions, but offer many things that can never be reached through the use of technology. The interaction between the reader and a story is genuine, they can feel the book between their hands and become connected to the world of the novel. Reading at leisure is more in depth with physical copies of books, and should always take precedence to the digital distributions.

    3. If given the power to influence the selection of book distribution in schools, I would always choose both. Digital versions of the book are great for people that prefer it over the paper copies, and can be accessed anywhere a device can be found. Paper books offer access to anyone, and students can benefit from having a physical copy to carry where devices are unavailable. Each class would have a class set of paper books for the students, both for school and at home. Digital books would be made available for every student, but to use it at school they would need to use one of the devices that stays at the school, and at home they can use their own devices. This offers a wide selection for every student, and gives access to a choose between the two.

  14. 1. My mom is an active kindle user, while I am a hardcover book lover. In my opinion, it's just personal preference whether you like online books more or actual books. I enjoy being able to physically hold the book and turn pages and that new book smell they have. On the other hand, my mother enjoys her kindle because of it's accessibility and the ability to read whatever book she wants, when she wants to. However, books don't run out of battery, so there's that.

    2. I love to read hard cover books. To be able to hold a physical copy and turn the pages is much better for me, than to just look at a screen and read.

    3. As much as I like hard cover books, I believe physical textbooks are uninteresting and less engaging to read. If I were running the school, I would get rid of all the textbooks and instead have students read and engage in their books online.

  15. 1. a pro is you could get a lot of free reading content for free a con is that sometimes people can put a download link and it can cause a virus
    2. i prefer to read on paper because i know that the book im reading has been reviewd by very decorated people that read books to see there the truth
    3. i would allow i pads that the school provides to the students to be rigged to only be able to go to the authorized school text book website so that they can study in a new form so that they wont get bored

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. A pro of reading online is the amount of information you have access too. A con would be for me is that you can get distracted maybe even reading a wrong article.

    2. I am fine with both but it is easier to hold a tablet than a big book.

    3. First textbooks are only good for science and math. Second it is better if we update the textbook because there are times when it is less distracting to use a textbook. Third is that technology is for more hands on learning when the teaching gives you something to do and you have to figure it out because of the vast amount of info. . I would use both in their benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. Although the upfront setup costs of buying tablets and e-readers is ridiculously high, it would make the long term cost of buying updated textbooks much simpler and cheaper.

    2. I prefer to read print text, as I am easily distracted when trying to read digitally and also it kinda hurts my eyes a bit.

    3. I think I would first set up some sort of infrastructure to make sure that the use of tablets and e-readers could work. Then I would see if it would be possible to link all the e-readers to a single account so all the textbooks can be bought only once and still work. Then I would have the one e-reader checked out to each student, and a fee for breaking or stealing the devices will be set so as to prevent an vandalization of school property.

  18. 1. reading online is a lot easier then having to pull out a single book. you can have all your books in one location and its a lot more convenient. A con would be that your tablet can run out of battery while your book doesn't.

    2. I would prefer a tablet. because you can see the words better and it is more fun then a book. turning pages is a lot easier on a tablet then an actual book.

    3. I Would probably use tablets because they seem to be becoming more practical as we advanced more into technology.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. Some pros for reading online are that all of your books are in one centralized location, and this location is very compact. However, online books do not have the same feel that paperback books have, and need a device to access them, usually an expensive one at that.

    2. Personally, I prefer using actual paper books. They simply have a feeling that cannot be replaced by online books, and I do not have to worry about damaging the device I would use.

    3. I love using online textbooks due to their lack of weight and their accessibility, so I would not hesitate using them. I would also provide for a great deal of technology to be used at school- however, I would make sure to include policies that would attempt to discourage the students from mistreating the technology provided, because I find this to be very common and saddening.

  20. 1. Online can present you with much more information than books all at your fingertips. Yet it can be a strain on your eyes and depend on how you use tablet/computers you can develop carpel tunnel.

    2. Personally, I don't mind either way. You're reading either way.

    3. I would allow people to choose their own method of reading. Why limit and restrict to one format over the other. Why even debate about this. People who likes to read out of books should just do so just as people who read online. It's their own choice and they should be able to do so without the pressure of debates.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1) The pros are that it can hold millions of books in the space of one book and the cons are that they are very expensive and that you need to charge them often.
    2) I prefer to read a paper book because they don't really hurt my eyes and that i'm just really used to it.
    3) I would probably use regular textbooks for my school but I would have no problem with students using online books during there free time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1. A pro about reading online it won't be lost. Books can be lost, but what's on the internet stays on the internet. Also, there's no need to deforest an area for wood to make paper and allow there to be more trees and wood for different objects/objectives.
    2. I like to read online so that I don't have to constantly change the page, hold the pages down, have a physical bookmark or fold the pages, plus I can read in the dark that way without having to have a bright light on. Online reading is just easier and more convenient.
    3. All the students are loaned a tablet and each tablet is monitored and protected from whatever i want to not be allowed. If one of the tablets isn't returned, the student would have to pay for the tablet so we could buy a new one. Each desk would have a charging station as well, so there's no "out of battery" excuse.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. A pro of reading online is you can take your book everywhere and it will fit in your pocket and a con for reading online is a book doesnt have a battery.

    2. I prefer to read online for the accessibility anywhere you are

    3. If i were running a school my plan for textbooks and electronics would both of them online so they could be accessed at any time

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. Pros for reading an online book is: It might be free, you don't need any sort of special lighting, thousands of books can be taken anywhere, its light and portable. cons could be: it has a battery, and it might need a certain amount of space on the hdd, although you could use the cloud or something.

    2. I prefer to read online since it's better on my eyes, accessible, I can take a lot on one device,, it's harder to damage a kindle, I dont need bookmarks, I can use lots of the features (like looking up a word definition, highlighting, copy and pasting, dont need to turn the page). There are lots of good things that make me prefer the online books.

    3. My plan would be: students would get a tablet for the year where they could get textbooks, do math, science, art, maybe photography. I would definitely get students tablets because I think it would make them more efficient and help them out a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1."College students who study with digital textbooks perform just as well on tests as do their peers who use print textbooks, but the digital books pose some problems, according to a recent study at Indiana State University." pros of reading on line is that you can store an incredible amount of books in just a tablet, rather than the heavy books we have to lug around.

    2. i personally dont care whether i read from a book or online, i do know i get headaches from being on electronics for to long, and its pretty heard to get a headache from a book.

3.if i were to run a school i would probably have it run on electronic textbooks considering the price of books, and the accessibility of the devices.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1 The pros of reading online is the portability of the mobile device being used in comparison to a book. Since the book is on a mobile device, it's practically pocket sized and can go anywhere and on top of that, the mobile device can get more books after that book is finished.

    2. Online books are more convenient for me because I'm able to read it in complete darkness as oppose to regular books.

    3. I'd have both textbooks and electronic books so just in case there is a problem with the tech, the class would have a backup to go off of.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. One of my personal favorite things about reading online, is the ability to quickly search for information. For example, if I need to write an essay on a certain book I can take the PDF file and use Control+F command to search for keywords. The only cons I can think of for reading online would include its limited use (battery) and the reliance on an electrical device. Honestly they aren't really much of a problem.

    2. I like to use something tactile when reading. I do most of my reading online, but I would prefer the material to be printed or in a book.

    3. If I were running a school and had to set up the reading system, I would issue students kindles. The kindle(s) could be a part of admission fee (if not free). Every book the students would need would be accessible from the kindle. The school could set up an account library to give students access to all the books they need.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1) a pro is Tablets help students learn more material faster and a con is Handheld technological devices including tablets are associated with a range of health problems.
    2) I like to read online because the pages wont fly around, and i can turn the brightness up and down when I like.
    3) I would promote the use of electronics because the textbook is prorably free online so it can save more money. The tudents will be learning more about technology in the process as well.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. Pros for reading online are: you don't have to worry about the store not having the book you want, and there is such a wide variety of choices that you can't get at a book store. The cons of this type of reading are that: if you stare at the stare at the screen for to long it will mess with your eyes, you don't get out, and what you read will always be kept on file.

    2. I don't really like to read but when I do I read a book on paper because I never saw the appeal of reading online and if read online I would be tempted to play a game instead of reading.

    3. If I were running a school I would use electronics because they are being used more and more in today's society also with textbooks kids, for some reason, tear apart the book's and wright inside them and just mess them up. With electronics you can see what each kid is looking at and and you can track which kid has which devise so you can tell who did it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1.A pro would be that you would only need one object to supply one student with all the books they would ever need that year and for many more after that. A con would be that electronics are very expensive fragile objects that you are giving to irresponsible children.

    2. I prefer paper from tablet. I've never really used tablets or any other electronic to read books before so I wouldn't know which is beter. But, I think paper is just easier on the eyes, i'm already looking at shrines and so I dont need to be looking at more.

    3. I would probible keep the school updated with books and textbooks that are up to date, always have the newest and coolest tech to help teach and to have the students mess with, But in the end have all those dreams smashed by the budget committee

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1) One pro could be students have it with them all the time and another con is the students could be doing anything when they are on their devices.
2)I Honestly like tablets more than paper because you can have a ton of books in under a pound so its more travel size.
3)I would still use the normal things like text books and such but I would implement tech into classes

    ReplyDelete

  33. 1.) A pro to reading online is you can have a lot of books on one device and can get them without delay because you can buy them online. A con is you have to buy a device to read online books and they can be expensive, more expensive than buying a hard copy of multiple books.

2.) I like reading both. I like the feel of holding a real book and reading it. I also like how with online books I can read on any device like my phone so I always have and it saves space.

3.) I would use electronics when in the class room but books you have to read for English class so books would still be used.

  34. 1. A pro for reading onlne is having alot of books in one certain device. A con is probably the limit of how much memory the device has so it might have a limit of how many books you can have on it.
    2. Online, I guess its because I grew up with technology being developed and am used to these devices and I do most of my reading online.
    3. Textbooks electronic devices might be a problem because they are way to expensive and probably would be constantly stolen.

    1. 2. Cont. I would rather have a real book than an "ebook", just from preference, but it is also not the same to read an ebook. With an ebook you don't get the same feeling of the paper in your hands it is just something that I do not believe should read books.

      3. If I was running a school I would got with desks that have tablets built in to the with the textbooks downloaded on to it. It would be a much different approach, and in the long run cheaper. having textbooks downloaded on to the tablets would make it easier for teachers to see if their students are on the right page or just messing around.

  37. 1.) A pro to have an online reader is that it would be yet another edition to using phones and it would work so much easier and much more efficiently. Especially on the iPad.

2.) I prefer paper because it's much more easier to read it and if you have a small screen like an iPhone -2.5 it'll be a harder screen to read upon while with an iPad it's much easier to read upon so I have kind of mixed feelings about reading on tech.

3.) I would let them do either, however I would have the wifi blocked temporarily just for that lesson.

  39. 1. The pros to reading online are that it takes up much less space in a classroom and that it can be much more convenient to access. It’s convenient to find books online rather than having to go somewhere to find them and buy, and it’s much easier to access online stores. Now some of the cons are that reading on a tablet may urge some of the more troublemaking students to go and steal the tablets, costing the school lots of money each year. The tablets can be broken, and they can be scratched or there’s a possibility of fried batteries or spilled water.
    2. I personally prefer to read books rather than a tablet. I like the weight and the feel of a book resting in my hand, and I usually like to flip the pages through my hand. Something about a tablet just makes me feel strange, and I get easily distracted to go and do something else. Plus (this might be more than just me) the bright light from the tablet dries out my eyes and they start to hurt when I read.
    3. If I ran a school, I would just go with textbooks. They seem the safer way to go, and it wouldn’t worry me to think about students stealing them. They might be expensive to buy so many books and replace them, but textbooks would be safer to keep in an unmonitored place than electronic tablets.

  40. 1) Online reading you can access anywhere as long as you log into the right software. So you could access the school's library from home, or if you are out of state, you can stay up to date with the lessons you are learning. You can have TONS of books on a tablet, versus having to slave away, carrying four textbooks weighing ten pounds. The cons of this is they tablets are far more expensive than books, and on top of that, you still have to buy the books. Far more expensive for replacements as well.

    2) I like online reading more. You can read in the dark with out having to light up the whole room. And in my opinion, they look a bit neater. You can also change the resolution on most of e-books, so you can adjust how much space you want between each letter and words. Although, regular books are cool too, because you can actually flip the pages and hold the book.

    3) If I ran a school I would have e-books. Students can stay up to date almost anywhere they go, so it would be a huge plus.

  41. 1.) Reading online allows you to access your text from anywhere. You don't need to lug around all of those text books if you have a tablet with you, so you can easily switch textbooks in a small tablet. Tablets take up less room than textbooks.
Cons would be alot of things, easily broken, easily stolen, and if the wifi is out, you can't read.

2.) I think for some things I'd rather have a tablet, such as textbooks. But for other things like novels and such, i'd rather have the novelty of having the physical copy. Something about that just seems better.

3.) I would say we should get tablets and read books online, but we'd probably have to stick with textbooks as schools don't have nearly enough funding to buy a bunch of tablets for students.

  42. 1) A pro for reading online is that you can easily access your reading material. It can all be stored in one place and read at the touch of a button.

    2) I prefer a book as it has a nice feel to it and isnt a strain on the eyes. Reading books at night with a light wont put as much of a strain on your eyes like reading an ebook in the dark.

    3) If I was running a school I would use electronics for reading. Students could keep all their books in one place and there would not be a big hassle about textbooks being lugged around everywhere.

  45. 1. One pro with E-books is being able to access and use the knowledge of the books anywhere. A com is not having physical copy to take anywhere to show. It could be difficult and really costly to do E-books.
    2. I prefer a paper, because one it easier to use, I can mark it and write notes, and I also just prefer it because thats what I've been use too. I feel more comfortable, having a physical copy is better.
    3. Well the age of Tech is coming in to education, all school and everything is easier. So I say in a Tech serge, I say with computers and such. Whatever is better for the students learning.

  46. 1) A pro for reading books online is you dont always have to read it sometimes i can be read to you. A con for this is that you have to worry about your batterys or your tablet, computer, or phone breaking.

    2) I personally prefer paper because I like the fell of a book and pages in my hand.

    3) I would give them textbooks because tablets would just start to fool around on them and not get their research or papers done.
