(S8) Video Entertainment

This week, as a final transition about video gaming (obviously a popular subject in your blog submissions) we will explore how trending interests in video entertainment industry are changing, based on the habits of your generation.

The author of this blog challenges us to explore the popularity of "video game watching" vs actually playing.   I'm going to challenge you with a bit more.

The purchase of Twitch by Amazon for close to a billion dollars speaks volumes about this popular activity.  Many of you indicated last week you've visited or know quite a bit about Twitch and other similar game viewing sites.   Your debate last week was very divided about eSports too!

So let's consider what is really happening here.   Is entertainment shifting?   Many of you said "Sports like football will never be replaced by video gaming."   Video gaming was not a contender five years ago and now look at the packed stadiums.

This is why people watch people playing video games

Why would anyone want to watch people play video games?

1.  What do you think of what you read in the links above?

2.  Do you watch others play video games?  Which ones?  Why?   If not, why not?

3.  How do you spend your leisure time?  Take a look at the chart below.  Consider how you spent your fun time in the last month or so (outside of sleep, eat, work, school)  And mentally circle or choose the top five things that occupy your time.
What are they?  List the ideas in the boxes that appeal the most to you, and if you can, list them in order of importance to you.  If you chose "something else" describe it.

4.  Which area (Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue)  do you predict your peers will be the strongest in?  Which area are you?

  1. 1. I think these are fairly accurate articles because, they said that people watch games for: buying advice, a community built around a streamer's personality, or the chance to observe professional grade skill I personally watch some of these people because they are playing games that I am or am looking forward to playing so this helps me with parts I am stuck on. Twitch is very helpful and a great idea.

    2. I as I said before watch them play games to get help on parts I am stuck on, am looking to buy that game, or I just enjoy the commentary of the person; like SurrealBeliefs he is one of my favorite commentators and I saw him playing Far Cry 4, a game I just bought, and I like the way he does what he does.

    3. My scale is from 1-5 1 being the most time spent and 5 the least: 1. Playing Sports 2. Watching TV 3. Movie 4. Youtube 5. Gaming

    4. I would say that most in GenYes will be in the orange I would like to say I am in between Yellow and Green.

  2. 1. I found the first of the two articles to be much more interesting. The fact that watching people play video games isn't just to "have to wait for your turn to suck" is much more interesting; I actually found myself shouting "F you, buddy!" a number of times at Mr. Luke Burbank, because much of what he talks about is that he's confused at how popular Twitch and YouTube are for video games; he's stuck in a world where the latest video game advancement is the Super Nintendo. Gaming has evolved, to the point that people can make a living sharing their best or funniest moments of playing a game, or recording and playing a full game live -- the best, funniest, and boring parts all together, or informing all the consumers out there and giving the consumer their personal advice on the best way to spend their money.

    2. Yes. I watch lots of people who play video games, usually just for the entertainment value; one of the strangest games I have ever watched and may ever watch was a collaboration between a girl named Dodger, and a guy named Cry, on a Korean dating simulator called "Dandelion: Wishes Brought to You". The completely organic reactions of the two to the situations in the game, the wacky voices that they gave to each character, and... oh man, the fangirl screaming from Cry... priceless, priceless.

    3. In order, for right now, is 1) music (because I do it no matter what I'm doing), 2) writing stories, 3) watching videos, 4) playing games, and 5) reading online.

    4. Personally, BIG TIME orange for myself and most of GenYes.

  3. 1. As the speaker from CBS said watching commentators is a boring activity, he doesn't seem to be the right enterprise to give this opinion, surely it is the kids and teenagers of this age that love to watch commentators play the games we love. I think it’s the commentating and the enjoyment we crave from watching livestreams, and other YouTubers. It was a right move for someone to buy Twitch, maybe Amazon wasn't the right company, but still a good move overall. Twitch is also a fun experience for those who aren't fortunate enough to purchase the games, and personally the topic of video games has become less and less fun for me lately. Though I don’t watch commentators on Twitch, I still watch a tech podcast on LinusTech every week, and occasionally an artist who goes by the name of GonzoSSM.

    2. Occasionally, I watch PewDiePie play videogames and commentate, but I personally focus on the technological side of YouTube. There are some other YouTubers that I enjoy that play Pokemon on their 3DS, but nothing more than that. A few years ago I would have had a HUGE list containing all the people I watched, but as I said the topic of video games hasn't been very intriguing lately.

    3. The order I would arrange these in would be Four, Two, Five, Three, than One, as I don’t find enjoyment from sports, nor am I good at them.

    4. Personally I would be in between orange and yellow, so an orangey-yellow? I love to watch Netflix, use Facebook for messaging, and while I still seek to watch television shows, because who doesn't love The Walking Dead?

  4. 2. Yes I watch people play video games some of them are, Vanossgaming, IAMWILDCAT, Yogscast, Markipliers, etc. I watch them to see what games are out on the market, if they are worth buying, and overall just to see them have a great time playing the game.

    3. I spend most of my free time playing online games with friends, watching others play online, listening to online music, Youtube, Social Media, or watching movies on TV.

    4. For my peers id have to say Orange/Yellow area, me I'm an all Orange because none of the other topics really interest me other than reading a book.

    1. 1. The speaker from CBS was right its boring to watch someone else play games, but for others it can be fun, they might not have enough money to buy these games so the next best thing is watching someone else play through it. While they may not get the full experience for themselves but at least they get to see what the gameplay is like and how smooth or not the game runs.

  5. 1: in the links above, I thought the first one was interesting, and it brought up a lot of factual points. I did not like the second one because it was just another adult seeing something we enjoy and calling it stupid and boring. When we do the same things we get grounded.

2: Not nearly as often as I used to. I watch mostly open ended games or comedy games. I watch people playing games because you get to see what a game is like, while still having funny commentary and unique viewpoints on games.

3: In order, I spend my freetime playing games, social events, skateboarding, reading books, and playing guitar.

4: It's a tie between orange, blue, and purple. I try to balance my time.

  6. 1.Luke Burbank is an idiot and makes quite an ass of himself in his article. He lacks comprehension of all forms of modern gaming and has put no research into understanding twitch and why people go onto twitch. He also demonstrates a very single and closed minded form of arguing, not willing to debate at all over a topic.
2.I occasionally watch other people play games but mostly to watch how other people accomplish goals in games but I do enjoy watching groups of friends play together.
3.The top five things that occupy my time are simplistic. A.Working on cars and whatever else my dad is fixing B.Working on homework
    C.playing games
    D.watching YouTube videos
    E.Hanging out with the family
4.I would say i'm a purple since most of the colors are kinda broad, but i am close to orange and so are all of my friends

  7. 1. The links provided are interesting, but hardly cover the drive behind watching Twitch broadcasts. Both sources focus on what the game is, and why someone would want to watch a game. Fans of a broadcaster rarely watch because of what game is being played, but instead watch specific broadcasters because of the ability to communicate with them in real time. People play games with their friends in communities, or alone, while others have devoted it to being their job. Those who use the service as a job rely on their fans views, and try their best to make the experience the best it possibly can for the viewers. Neither site covered the the connection between the broadcaster and the viewer, and instead focused on the general biased views that people are there for the games.

    2. I occasionally partake in the past time of watching Twitch broadcasts, but it isn't based upon which game is being played. While I'm performing other tasks on the computer, videos and livestreams an be played on my other monitor. I rarely watch television, its all rehashed from previous shows, and the hidden people that livestream and record for themselves are a source of true comedic value and entertainment. Its interesting to watch, and at any time you can communicate with the person behind the video stream, its a perfect service that anyone can take advantage of.

    3. My free time is generally devoted to tasks on my computer. Occasionally it may be watching videos or livestreams, or playing games, but is generally set on whatever I find interesting at the time. After doing any work, I might work on a small project or two, ranging from programming to game development. When I am not using my computer, I read books. Books are an excellent source of entertainment, and contain more value than that of digital literature. Above all else, I bake. Starting from nothing and being able to create a finished product is what drives the passion behind anything I do, whether it is with digital or with food. The sense of accomplishment is amazing when its finished.

    4. My peers are most likely strongest in the Orange area, with the modern generation being able to access technology anywhere.

  8. 1. Those are cool links but why do people watch people play games, I think its a wast of time of watching people play games. Its more entertain if I play video games instead of watching people play video games. Video games are very fun to play but again why watch people play games.
    2. I don't watch people play games, its really not that fun watching people play video games. I rather play video games, its a lot more fun to play games instead of watching people. Watching people play games make me bored to death and feels like time is going slow if i don't play video games.
    3. I sometimes play online video games with my friends if I don't have anything to do. I mostly go to sporting events and play sports, going to the gym, watching hockey games and baseball games on tv. I love going to spring training games, by the way spring training starts today. I also like to go to the coyotes games those are fun seeing players fighting. I also love to paint and draw on my free time, I like to listen to music a lot.
    4. My list, 1-5. 1.playing sports or going to sporting events 2. going to the gym. 3. watching sports on TV 4. watching movies 5 online video games.

  9. 1. I can see why people say it's a waste of time. But I disagree, me personally it's pretty entertaining seeing what happens in others games. Everyone's play style and strategies are costumed to them personally, and I think that it's good that we are able to witness that and see how well other's style is. It is also good for judging a new game coming out. Such as, if it's worth the time and money, is it fun or not.

    2. Yes, I usually watch League of Legends. I watch to see how other fail and succeed, also is the closest to playing League since I don't have a computer at home to download it yet.

    3. Usually playing video games, watching videos, texting, playing with my cat, and rarely my parents play video games with me.

    4. I think that quite a bit of people in here are in the orange as well as I'm.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1.) I found the first one to be the most interesting because it had the most content. The second article talked about how boring it was to watch people play video games but if you think about it, its the same as sports watching people play something and watching them.

2.) Yes I do I watch league of Legends streams or tournaments because I like to study other players play styles and see how they are applied to the current match. And watching these unique play styles helps me improve because I have studied what works and what doesn't.

3.) Everything in orange is what I do almost everyday in my leisure time. I don't really have many interests outside of orange except maybe a few time I will do something else but not often.

4.) Everyone in my group are orange in every way possible I can think of Maybe some have something different but orange is highly predominate.

  11. 1 & 2. (I am offended. I find nothing wrong with binge-watching ¨Orange is the New Black) I can definitely relate to Burbank's view on how watching video games is boring. When I watch people play video games, it is usually because it is a game that is not familiar to me, or I want to size up my peer's gaming skill. And chances are, I'll ask to play, and do rather well on the game. But to pay one billion to watch video games? That is a bit much.

    3. 1- Something else (I like to make video games on paper. DON'T JUDGE ME!); 2- Participating in a sport (Tennis); 3- Social Media; 4- Music; 5- Video Games

    4. My peers are DEFINITELY in the orange zone (my friends know who they are), and I'm probably in the orange zone myself, though I also edge towards the green zone.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1. I feel annoyed with the newscaster's closed-mindedness with people wanting to watch other people play games, and his complete lack of research toward the subject. He never bothered to delve deeper into why people want to watch others play video games, he instead just finds it weird and dismisses it. And that pisses me off....

    2. I do watch other people play video games. I watch the more well known people on YouTube like Markiplier and The Creatures. While on Twitch, I watch Dyrus, mang0, Sky, and TheOriginalWeed. I really enjoy these gamers and I love to watch them play and react to the games they're playing.

    3. What I do in my leisure time is play games, watch people play games, play ranked and competitive matches of Counter Strike and LoL, talk on Skype, and listen to music. The computer is my life.

    4. Me and my friends are more so in the orange area. We really love everything that's online.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1.) I think people like to watch people play video games is either they want to know about the game itself, or they want to watch people react to it.

2.) I watch lots of videos of people play video games for entertainment but I don't watch people who don't react well to it.

3.) Most of the online things and the Drama, and fine arts.

4.) Most definitely the orange zone. As am I.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1) People watch games online to see different reactions on the game if they've played it and or just because they like that person. They also may want to find out about a game in real time by asking the person play.

    2) Yes I do watch others play video games like FNAF 1, 2, & 3, Binding of Issac Rebirth and many more. Why? Because I am genuinely interested in the game that is being played, and it's also because I most likely cannot acquire the game myself.

    3) Everything shown in the orange category of boxes is what I do in my free time.

    4) Orange zone just like myself.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1.) I think the first link was more or less true, because those really are some good points as to why someone might watch another person play, although the second link would I think be a bit different because he seems to use his own experiences with video games to judge something that millions of people do all of the time, so he made it a lot more personal rather than look at other things, but I do agree with some things about it toward the end, like in saying life will be the most interesting “game” we will play
2.) I usually do watch one person play video games, and that would be a commentator called Sinuyan, and I mainly watch him because his commentary is usually pretty amusing and he typically plays horror games, so it’s always fun to get scared every once in a while with watching those videos.
3.) The top 5 would probably be (in order of importance) Online Video Gaming, Online socializing/chat, Online Movie Watching/Youtube, Online movies or shows/Netflix, Reading a book.
4.) One of my good friends would probably be in the orange area mostly, although another would probably be between Blue and Orange, depending on circumstances.

    1. 1) The first article is pretty good at describing why people watch games. The only thing I would add is people watch it for inspiration. Someone could have completely lost hope/interest in a game until they watch someone else's perspective of it. The second article doesn't spend much time actually researching why people watch. In most cases, it's why people watch wrestling matches. Yes, it can be entertaining, but when you are competing yourself, it's good to see how people win, and when they screw up. Knowing these things can help you not only win, but overcome obsticles you thought were never possible.

      2) I watch people play LoL, Dota 2, and Planet Side 2 in order to learn knew techniques, when and when not to do things, and so on. Although I watch a lot more of entertainment type videos. Friends having fun playing a rediculous game, or people playing horror type games that get my heart pumping. It's fun to see how they react in certain situations versus how I do.

      3) I play video games, watch online videos, attend social events, attend music events, and work out.

      4) I'm mainly an orange, but I do things in every catagory. All of my friends are mainly oranges as well.

  17. 1. The first article seems to be more informative and unbiased than the second. Unlike the second, which is a biased, uneducated opinion article, the first does not explicitly take a side on whether watching people play video games is or is not a waste of time, but rather an exposé on why others enjoy the activity.

    2. I do spend copious hours on YouTube watching various gaming channels, most notably Rooster Teeth and all their various shows that have inspired me to become a video editor in the future.

    3. 1) Online video game watching 2) Online video gaming 3) Online movie watching/Youtube 4) Online movie watching/Netflix 5) Drama, Singing, Creating Art

    4. Undoubtably orange, orange.

  18. 1. i thought that these things can be true depending on the situation i thought the guy at the beginning of the second article video caught my attention because it is the most true thing i have heard in the last 20 minutes.

    2. No not anymore at least. i used to a lot about 3 years ago when i had a lot of time.

    3. in order from greatest to least would be 1) working out, 2) Participating in sports, 3) going to social events, 4) Going to sports events, 5) Online movies or shows on Netflix

    4. most of the Genyes people are orange but my friends would be in the green and i'm also in green and a little blue

  19. 1. The first link I thought was on to something with its explosion on why people watch gaming and such, like to see reviews and opinions to see if its worth buying, or the fact that the people we are watching are entertaining. As for that other guy, he's clearly talking out of his but. He has no experience in gaming at all, and is contradicting all his points.

    2. I do, I watch many people but most regularly I watch Markiplier and the Game Grumps, though I watch many others on less regular times.

    3. it would be , 1. online gaming or gaming in general, 2. game watching, 3. online movie or show wating, 4. participating in sports, and 5. surfing the web

    4. of all my friends, i would say orange

  20. [1] I'm pretty amaze about both links and how to see many reviews and opinions on such about gaming. The first one talk a lot more and the second the guy is talking about gaming when he doesn't have any experience!

[2] Man I watch people online mainly to see whats out there, if I want to play it, or find cheat codes but above all to see people screw over their friends. and people I watch man that's a lot but main is, OMGitsfirefox , Aureylin, The derp crew, The creature hub, Seananners, MrSark, Gassymexican, VanosGaming and his friends.

[3] 1- Online Video Game Watching 2-Online reading 3-Watching shows on tv 4-Something else 5-Working out

  22. 1. I think the leaks really do a good job of explaining why people watch video games. A lot of people watch them to learn new things about the game or even watch their favorite pros play on the field. I think most of the time, people watch games because of someone they love is playing that game, pros, friends, etc. In my personal opinion watching people play a game a love is like watching my favorite movie over and over again. It entertains me and gets me excited to watch it again.

    2. I do watch others play video games, mostly i watch League and a lot of those famous zombie survival games, as well as Destiny. Watching these people kind of gets me back into a game or gets me hyped to play that game, most of the time i will go back on that game after watching them for awhile. Most of these people inspire me to keep playing video games and give me great ideas on what to do in those games, no matter if it's a strategy or a fun idea.

    3. I do everything in the orange, I attend some sporting events, watch shows on T.V, and sometimes I attend social events.

    4. Mostly i'm an orange and almost all of my friends are orange as well. Which is a great fit for me since I do everything that's in orange as well.

  24. 1. I think the first link shows why some people watch others and how much money people make doing this and that there is a real market out there for it. The second link shows that it is not for everyone just like watching sports.

    2. I watch people play games. All kinds of games even games I don't like to play like Terria. I watch because I think it is fun. Why do people watch sports like Football, Basketball, Etc.

    3. Playing Video games, Making Music/Singing/Raping, Watching People Play Video games, Online Music, Surfing the web. I also spent time outside camping with the Scouts. But yeah most of my time is at a computer, This why I know how one works and have no social life.

    4. Orange I think almost GenYES kids are in the orange group. I am in the orange group too but will blue just to leave the screens for like a hour or two.

  25. 1.) I think that people watch other people play video games because it's entertaining to listen to the commentary and it's also a good walk-through for the game because the player is usually a professional gamer.

2.) I watch other people play games usually for entertainment only, I think some commentators are pretty funny and they can make the game more interesting. I also watch people play horror games since I am too afraid to play them myself..

3.) I like to play video games, watch other people play them, watch netflix, and I sometimes like to surf the web. Most of my time is on a gaming console or a computer.

    4. I think that most of the male freshmen students at our school are in the orange group. Along with everyone in GenYES and me.

  26. 1. I believe that they were interesting comments, and completely true. I personally watch other people play games either for their personalities or for information on the game, and I agree that it is not a fun experience otherwise.

    2. I usually watch videos of other people for information. Usually for League of Legends, along with some electronics tutorials. Sometimes I will find a YouTuber that I believe to be very entertaining, and I will watch more of their videos, but I mostly watch videos for entertainment.

    3. I mostly fall into the orange category and a bit in the blue category, with watching/playing video games being about tied with reading. I also listen to music and surf the web.

    4. I believe that in this time period, many people use the internet a great deal. Some may use it for different purposes, but many people use it.

    2. I watch used to watch people play Call of Duty Black Ops. It helped me become an elite black ops player but now ever since I stooped playing video games I stoped watch others play.
3.I watch Basketball when ever its on television I do tend to play NBA 2k13 a lot with my friends

  30. 1) I think that games are just another way for entertainment and that me personally, think that they are fun.
    2) I watch others play popular video games sometimes. Usually just the ones that are popular right now.

    4) I think that my friends would mostly be in the orange category.

I like the gamers I listed because they all have their own unique way of doing things. Be it for comedy or for tutorials, each of these people has their own unique way of making their videos and connecting with their viewers.

3.) Most of my time I actually prefer spending either playing games, making skins for minecraft (planetminecraft.com/member/lswf126), or doing research or reading online topics Im interested in. Usually I put on Game Grumps in another window while doing these, so I can be playing a game and still hear all the funny jokes and whatnot.
Main things I do: Play League of Legends or Counter Strike:Global Offensive | listening to music | making Minecraft skins |

  37. 1. I think that people have many reasons for playing games. For entertainment, experience or to learn and explore different unthought-of paths to get through a game.
2.I watch many people play games, as I find watching them play to be both a learning experience, a way to pass time, and a new way to learn about the game.
3.I spent a lot more time than I probably should have watching online videos or gaming, but also participated in events with school, like drama and sports.

  38. 1) the second one sounds very criticizing of the gaming culture and just because the author didnt like video games he sounds like know one should like them only because he is bad at them.
    2) Yes, Markiplier, and Chaaaboyy. They are funny happy players that make others happy through their good moods.

  39. 1. I think it’s incredible how much money and popularity people can get from playing games on the internet. The second link made me sad. He called video games a notorious time waster, which shows he is clearly way behind the times. Video games is a way people connect, share experiences and memories, and make their living. What many older people fail to understand is that video games are no longer a waste of time for the bulk of society, but a legitimate hobby like building model ships inside of a bottle.
    2. I follow the NA League of Legends Championship Series from time to time, my favorite team is Team Solo Mid because Bjergsen is the god of mid lane.
    3. Most of my time is spent playing games online, making music, participating in sports, reading books, and Youtube.
    4. My group of friends are all over the place as far as hobbies, as am I. The only category I don’t fit in at all is watching TV.

  40. 1) The information from the links is crazy. The fact that people can make millions of dollars a year playing video games and streaming is wrong. A lazy person playing video games can make more money than someone working hard to support their family. That is what troubles me. I believe that is out of order.

    2) I do not watch people play video games. I believe that it is a waste of your time to watch someone play video games.

    3) I spend my leisure time skating and hanging out with my friends. The boxes that appeal to me is the purple one and the orange netflix one.

    4) All of my friends and I fall into the purple category. I would say most of the Genyes class falls into the orange category.
