4. Tracking Technologies

Electronic Tracking.   Good?   Bad?

Tracking technology is widespread and growing. Read and explore each of these 3 tracking technologies:

What is good about each type of tracking unit?

What is bad?

Be thoughtful in what the future implications of these technologies might be.

  1. FIRST!

All three of these tracking devices sound like they could really make people's lives a little easier. My favorite of the three articles is the black box in cars. I'd love to have information about both vehicles when an accident occurs. As for the online shopping, I wouldn't mind stores tracking what I shop for to perhaps make it easier when I come into their store. Lastly the pocketfinder seems like a great tool for tracking where you and your family members are at all times. This would be perfect for when we usually split up at malls or events.

  2. Pocketfinder is a great device, always knowing where your car or any item is. Insuring location at all times, allowing you to relax and not have to worry about theft. And over-all, makes life easier. But... The information is NOT just available to you, it can be seen by the host itself (PocketFinder) and anyone who has the website log in information. This could impede privacy and also make the conspiracy people freak-out.

The EDR technology (black-boxes) that are installed in several cars, and may be mandatory before 2014 has its pros and cons. If positive data is collected, it could benefit you from insurance. And same goes if negative data is collected, then insurance companies may boost their costs.

Giving away personal data, which is intended to benefit the stores, can harm you. Especially with the retail tracking technology. Although you are not physically or even mentally aware of the data collection, in the long run it cause invasion of privacy without consent. Which limits and breaks our humane right as an individual in America.

Wrapping this up, electronic track can have its benefits, but is it worth information thats traded? Personally, I will not use any of the above devices, unless I am aware of the terms, conditions, and agree with them. For now, I do not trust them, and nothing will change that.

  4. Pocketfinder is a personal GPS that locates you personal objects and people such as your loved ones, pets, and vehicles. Their mission is to keep families connected when they can’t be together and below are real-life success stories. I'd say there's nothing bad about this.

Basically the EDR, or black boxes are small GPS like trackers that are located under the dashboard. Automotive black boxes are different than the kind that are in airplanes, which continuously record audio, mechanical functions and location. Black boxes tramsmit information like the vehicle speed and brake activity. I'd say there's nothing bad about this.

Attention shoppers: Retailers can now track you across the mall. This is acatually true, the retailers in shops, malls, and even gas stations can now track you. Creepy. Most everyone thinks this is the wrong thing to do and I have to agree with those people who disagree with this. I think this is not nessesary.

  5. On iTalk® – Talk About Your PocketFinder, people seemed very happy about it. For example, I read about a story where they put a tracker on their daughter's car and they found out she was speeding. They told her to stop. A few weeks later, the parents found out that their daughter's boyfriend was speeding and crashed really bad. He had to go to the hospital. They could have possibly saved their daughter's life. Unfortunately, I makes it so the kids can't feel secretive and free. We have to experience freedom early on to help with life lessons later on.

There are Black Boxes in cars. It is wise to check your owner's manual to see if your own car has been spying on you. The New York Times reports 96 percent of cars now carry some sort of black box under the dashboard, and the National Highway Traffic Administration wants the technology standard in all vehicles sold in the U.S by 2014. Recorders capture vehicle speed, brake activity, crash forces and even seat belt use at the time of the event. Unfortunately, many people say they can easily be abused. There needs to be protections to prevent this abuse.

For shoppers, and the fact that retailers can now track you across the mall. Retail stores will soon be able to follow you around the store – or even outside the store if you just walk by without entering – using the WiFi antenna built into your smartphone. Unfortunately, retailers can misinterpret data and may falsely accuse people of stealing or trespassing.

  6. 1. Pocketfinder is helpful for locating loved ones. For example if your dog runs away pocketfinder will help you find them and reunite you with them. But this can also be bad by sometimes giving wrong locations or sometimes even tracking the wrong thing, so this can be both helpful and hurtful.

    2. Black boxes are helpful for when you are a good responsible driver, and is also hurtful when you are irresponsible by raising your insurance.

    1. 3.The mall tracker can be a great thing if someone shoplifts then you know where you are and can be bad if you want to be alone such as a celebrity they are always being talked an tracked and do not want to be bothered by a noisy teen manager at a mall

  7. 1. Technology like this can be good for tracking both lost things and perhaps even criminals. I think that is more than reason enough to call them beneficial.

    2. These technologys may also be bad in that it violates peoples privacy, so it is widely considered to be bad.

  8. 1. Tracking devices like these are good ideas for tracking down people you may be suspicious of like the housemaid story. It's a good tool for keeping an eye on kids if they're sneaking off and such.

    2. Technology like this may be misused. Car trackers that the police can use can have good benefits, yet it can be a misuse of power if it feel into the wrong hands.

  9. 1) The black boxes can be useful to assist in investigations related to cars such as accidents, drug-related crimes, and even murder cases. The pocketfinders are a useful tracker because it can be used to bust a lying associate/employee/etc., be used to just keep track in general of someone like a driver, and it can even be used to find stolen property. The retail tracking will be a good thing because it will make loss prevention officers' jobs loads easier.

    2) The bad part about the black boxes is that it will make drivers worried about their own privacy when it comes to their speaking habits while driving. The bad part of the Pocketfinder is that it could be used for the wrong purposes such as spying on an enemy or something. The bad part of the in-mall tracking system is that it will be making everyone in the mall feel like a criminal for the few that are actually criminals.

  10. 1. The Pocketfinder is personal locator that can track your family, pets, vehicles, or other possibly stolen items. It is easy to install and anyone who has the right info can access it. It also offers security purposes. The only bad thing I can think of is that other people can track you.
    2. Cars may be forced to have EDR technology, or black boxes installed. They can record speed, location, audio, brake activity, and even seatbelt useage. It can help insurance companys find out your driving abilities, like how progressive has that "snapshot" discount. But they also maybe use it to find out what drivers patterns are and adjust prices accordingly.
    3. Store tracking is interesting. It can also track potential identity thefts or other crimes. It could also track employees. But it could also have the ability to be misused. It could steal information, credit card info, etc. And people are already being video recorded in most stores.

  11. On the Pro side of Tracking systems it could lower crime rate, and locate family, vehicles and lost phones.
However on the Con side of tracking systems People could be robbed of their privacy and be tracked by strangers, who can know when and were they are at all times.

  12. 1.Pocketfinder is good because it can find stolen cars and it can let you know were your valuable items or things are. Pocketfinder is bad because it can invade peoples privacy and people may complain about that.

    2. Black Box is good because it can show why events or car crashes happen and it can help others solve problems easier than normal. Black Box is bad because it could not work and it could break easy.

    3. Store tracking is good because theft can be prevented and it can be easily solved with store tracking. Store tracking may make people mad because they have no privacy and it's weird to be tracked all the time in the store or mall.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1) PocketFinder appears to be a good app due to the fact that the user has complete control over who can view their location. The only con to this would be, how secure is this truly? You would never know who works for the company with access to your "private" information, or how secure the data is kept.
    2) The main idea of these black boxes is a good one. It allows the owner of the car to be able to get more information regarding their car's functions in the event of a collision. However, having this an almost public source is not the way to approach it at all. Insurance companies or police officers should not be able to collect this data under any circumstance without the prior consent of the one who purchased a car including the black box.
    3) The idea of tracking traffic in a store using a device's wifi antenna is a neutral idea for me. The good about this is there is no effort that goes into this tracking by the user, and everything remains completely anonymous about the customer's visit. The cons however would include the store using the wifi antenna of a phone without the user's consent to track them when they may prefer to not be tracked, anonymous or not.

  14. 1. The tracking unit on a car is smart the reason being is to see how reckless a driver is being. Such as new drivers this technology can make statistics on how many car accidents there are in general. The government having this technology is good because they can catch a criminal faster using his car tracking device.

    2. This technology could become very valuable giving a location on anyone at any given time. Dirty cops could easily give tracking information to criminals which wouldn't be good. Overall the technology that's coming is going to be a violation of privacy and will ultimately be banned.

    3. Store tracking is just weird why would you track people across a store or mall. I could understand if someone is shoplifting but then why do we have cameras. I guess this technology could have more advertising through out the store to make more sales but that's really the only benefit.

  15. 1.) The Pocketfinder device could be useful for locating lost items and quickly locating them before they get too far away. One bad thing about it is that if the person who takes the object knows/suspects that the item in question has this device, and if they are smart enough, then they could disable it or remove it to throw the person off and lose the object.

2.) The Black Box can be useful for giving people important information when they get into a car crash so that they would know the damage that was done and if it was serious or not

3.)I don't really like the fact that stores are able to track down people who walk in there because it invades their privacy and may cause customers to get paranoid and not want to go there because the store is pretty much stalking you because it knows if you buy something, how long you stay there, etc. so this should not go on or else stores may lose their customers.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. The Pocketfinder device is useful for finding items that are lost and tracking them before they get out of reach. Something that is bad about this is that anyone who has the item would know that it has the device and destroy/ disable it.
    2. The Black Box could help people in a car crash or on the high way so the people at the hospital can evaluate the situation and act accordingly.
    3. I disagree with the fact that any store can stalk you if you walk in it and then get your information as easy as a few clicks online. They also are disturbing the privacy of the customers therefore destroying any trust with the company.

  17. 1. The pocketfinder tracking device has many good qualities including that it can help you keep in touch with loved ones, help you find important devices you need, and allow you to know where your loved ones or pets are at all times. It could probably also be used to help someone in need if it was used differently like put in the hands of the police.

    2. The Black boxes could definitely be helpful for when someone has committed a crime and the police need to catch him on his way home or it is nice to have if someone has gotten into an accident people will know quicker and be able to help. Though some people may not like it because it invades there privacy of where they go everyday.

    3. I don't agree that stores might be able to stalk what you do, but it could be helpful in a shop lifting incident. Also if it was used just for families to track each other.

  21. 1. Having a tracking device on your phone can help a lot of people. Specifically if someone is lost or the parents want to make sure there kids are where they say they are. Or in the car where you can track when who is going to be where at this specific time.

    2. People may not want to be tracked. It is kinda creepy knowing that some random person could track you down wihtout you knowing the first thing about it. As long as it can be disabled it could be a good thing.

1.Being able to be tracked is cool but that means that whom ever has a computer an internet connection and some hacking skills can track you that is dangerous. Pedeos, murderers, any criminals could find you and that is scarey.
Plus I don't want to be tracked by anybody the gov. my parents or random people.

  23. 1. Pocketfinder is a program that helps you track your phone,IPod,tablet, and car. If you think you left it somewhere or think someone is using it you will be able to see where it is
    2. Black Boxes i think is creepy. They let the police be able to track your car anytime they please. There are also up sides like if your car gets stollen they can track it down and find the person who stole it.
3.The fact that retailers are tracking us is really creepy and messed up. Because that means they can raise prices on the most popular items and there in your business and seeing what your buying.

  25. 1. PocketFinder has a very good potential. It can be used to track important possessions like cars or even people. Although I have to say, some of those stories are a little absurd.

    2. From what I understand, the Black Box is a tracking device hidden in most people's cars. What worries me, is that the public hears almost nothing about this. Without this article, I probably still wouldn't know.

    3. The shopper tracking doesn't surprise me at all. I don't really like it though, that the stores could be recording this much information about its costumers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. I think pocket finder is the best out of all of the others, Because it can track everything you want it to, and lets your loved ones know where you are.

    2. Black Boxes is alright, only use is if your car gets stolen. It's just for cars so really doesn't help people know where you are, whats more important, your life or your car? Take a pick.

    3. Only use I see for the shopping tracker is if someone shoplifts or a small child is lost.

2.) they are all good but tracking devices disturb me because i have issues with someone being able to track you.

3.) terrible, because tracking people is a little overboard.

  29. 1) The black boxes and trackers are good for security and protection, as long as they are being tracked by the right people! The fact that stores will be tracking you is a but unsettling though, and It's one of the reasons I'm reluctant to getting a smartphone.

    2) The black boxes and other tracking devices could go horribly wrong, if gotten into the wrong hands. Criminals could view where police cars are, stalk people, and cyber criminals could pull off some pretty dangerous stuff, such as sending police on a wild goose chase by messing with signals. (I'd assume that's not just in movies and that we actually DO have cyber-criminals :P)

3)As long as they don't start tracking me, I'm fine. Other than that, I really don't care what they use these for. They'd be good for criminals on parole, among other things, and I can see them implementing them into other vehicles as well, such as aircraft and boats. Tracking is a good way to stop crime, but we do need SOME privacy.

  30. 1.) I think that all of the trackers are good but the best one is the one where retailers can track you because now stupid people can stop getting away with shop lifting. *Pfffft Some peoples is stupid*

2.) I just think they will all backfire and people can get there hands of the tracker and come to your house and kill your family.

3.) It will be bad in the future because people will be tracked all over the world an that really freaks me out.

  32. As with all tracking devices that ever have been and ever will be, there are various pros and cons that will be associated with. The main problem that comes up in discussions about such devices is that of the violation of privacy. While this is a legitimate concern, the help that such devices often times provide is much more prominent, therefore lessening the worry of privacy. Overall, there will always be those who agree with such devices for their help and those who disagree for the problems that might arise.

  33. All three of these are good but shopping markets can really be annoying if they start calling you and sending you text. The first two are extremely good for safety but then one day this could get out of control. None of them are a bad idea though.

  34. All three is these very cleaver devices used to track a person's car/ item through a GPS system. Even with it's simpleness and usefulness, there are some issues concerning the right of privacy for citizens. We have a right to our privacy, and if violating it means safety, some may find that it is worth it. After reading all about these items, I feel that if this continues, the government may have too much power over our individual rights.

  35. WEeeeelllll it deleted my post so i'll just write it again.
All three of these innovations have the potential to be really useful when used correctly. I see the pocket finder as being the most controversial because it could be used incorrectly or illegally to track a person or object. However business owners could use it on company vehicles to trace them to make sure employees are doing their job. Or families could place them on pets so that the pet never gets lost. I believe the black box could do a lot of good, anytime a car company receives feedback on its product is another chance for something to be fixed. Also law enforcement will be able to have a clearer picture in car involved cases. The Ip mall tracer could be used to help stores improve on product placement making it easier for people to shop for exactly what they want.

  36. Hmm...well this could be good for stolen items...or lost items. You see, if you're a person like me who forgets where they put everything, then this could be very useful! I mean, everyday I think my phone warped into some unknown void, never to be seen again...3 hours later I find it under my pillow. Although, this could be bad in regard to privacy. I mean, I don't want the government tracking down EVERYTHING I do! This idea would be great if you had the choice of having it or not. Like, I get a bike and I want a tracker in/on the bike, and I would just pay extra for it. Or having the option to turn it on or off on your phone. This could save/ ruin a lot of lives. People could be framed for something they didn't do, simply because they were at the scene of the crime. Although, if someone were lost in the wilderness, other people could find them.

  37. 1.) 2013 Project Check - This stuck out to me because it helped me organize my time effectively. The blog basically acted as a mom, checking up on my homework progress. The motherly values showed major interest to me.

2.) 2012 Does it blend? - At the first glance of this blog, I thought of cool stuff I could blend, such as a laptop and a guinea pig. But after reading the entire blog, I had nothing to do with blending, instead, it was relating to school learning. Totally mind blew me to another planet, like dang.

3.) 2013 Tracking Technologies - I got to wonder what information the NSA holds? And after reading this blog, I came to the conclusion, the government is life. It is impossible to find a something the government does not monitor; if your in your backyard, the government knows, if your in your bathroom, they know. This blog helped me realize that.

    P.S. 162 words, Great Job Anthony! :)
