Worrisome Websites!

Below are 10 strange websites.  But some are stranger than others because a few of the websites below are totally fake! The info is totally wrong and the whole website was designed to fool you!  But...hey you are GenYES you won't be tricked!  Right?  Your task is to determine which ones are real and which are fake.

Part 1.  Make a list of the sites.  For example:  Fake = 1, 2, 3..  Real= 4, 5, 6..

NOTE: You can fool your pals here by posting bad information and then re-posting a revised list at a later time!  This assignment is all about foolery! Make sure your final list is the real one though because you will be graded for "right" and "wrong" answers out of the ten websites.

Part 2.  Give an explanation of how you determined which ones were real and which ones were fake.

Part 3.  What is the "lesson" of this assignment?

The Websites:

1.   Giraffe Mania

2.   Fishcam

3.   Northwest Tree Octopus

4.   Pantagonian Mara

5.   Safe Cloning

6.   Leafy Seadragon

7.   Angora Rabbit

8.   Pen-Tailed Tree Shrew

9.   Floral Body Sculpture

  2. 1. I don't understand how it could be fake or real? Is it real if it actually has a million pictures of giraffes or not?

    2. Definitely Fake because the reflections and fish can't swim upside down and through a few images it definitely looks like they are.

    3. This is fake as well, all of the links lead off to Wikipedia. and you can tell that the video they have was a load of B.S.

    4. Real they are definitely real mini donkeys and such stuff like that.

    5. Fake. I am supposed to invent this. And you can definitely do gene splicing to prevent mitochondrial disease. But you can't do that to yet.

    6. Real the Leafey Sea Dragon is a legit fish.

    7. It is real because as far as i can tell the check out option goes through really far for it to be fake.

    8. Real but it doesn't make sense on the websites categories. It is technology and then science i think its kinda random.

    9. Fake this is definitely not possible because the genetic engineering has not been developed enough to be able to do this.

    10. It is fake. and the person who made that website did a crappy job of it too.

Pretty much Like Ian and Riches but with one notable exception.

    2) You can check Validity of the site buy checking news articles with reliable sites like CNN or (sometimes) Wiki. Other acid tests-Do the links work? check the URL. Google the articles name or the name of the site to see if any forum posts have revealed the true nature of these sites (scammers/hackers/4chan inside joke. (/b/)

The "lesson" is always take what you read on the internet with a grain of salt, you never know what some of these webdesigners are up to or what false or rumorville info they can fill their blogs or fake sites with (the onion)

Pretty much close to Jon's, but with one or two changes.

    2. Some of the sites you could tell the pictures were obviously photoshopped. Others, I googled to see what other people's opinions were on them, and I checked to see if any of their information was on multiple sites.

    3. The lesson is to learn the difference between a real and a fake site, so we can get more reliable information when researching for projects and such.

  10. Some of the websites regrading animals I looked up else where on the internet others could be determined based on the proposerous nature of their content. Some where harder to get and I ended up guessing.

This lesson shows that while the internet has anything and everything on not all is true and you have to be critical when surfing the web.

  11. 1) Most of the websites are fairly easy to determine weather they are fake or not but some like website 10, looks really fake but can have real information on. I say it was fake but i could be wrong!

    2) The lesson of this assignment is to not get fooled by fake websites because when you do research you dont want to get false information.

    1) Pretty much what Ian and Rich except for the last one. I researched these mostly on wiki. Some of these are easy to detect if their real or fake but number 10 was a tricky one.

    2) I think the lesson is how to determine real info and fake info. This comes in handy like when you do a project or write an essay because nobody wants to look stupid with false information.

I basically did the opposite of Tanner, but did investigate some to make sure I was on the right track.

The lesson is for us to be able to know which websites are out to get us and to help us learn the difference between legit and illegit sites.

3.It shows that you can't believe everything you hear. You should do research before you jump on the bandwagon of anything.
