S5 Tech Home

Home of the Future

Take a look:

  • 1.  Which companies, do you feel, have the best ideas in the development of high tech homes for the future? Discuss the features that you like the best.
  • 2.  What does the IoT have to do with all this?
  • 3.  How does the main control system work?  Would you build a high tech system in your home?  Why / Why not.

  1. 1. The top innovator in Smart homes is Honda, with their Super efficient house, with more than halving the energy usage of a typical house.

    2. IoT will allow all of your appliances to be intelligent and connected (Granted they wont be able to do your homework yet sadly.) Your fridge will know what you took out of it, and it will be able to suggest dinners.

3.The main system keeps track of all energy usage in the house and divides it out for max efficiency And YES! i would put a high tech system in my house, without a doubt i would love being able to interact with my house.

  2. 1. An Ecotech house in Oklahoma makes an ultra-green house system that can capture rainwater for its sprinkler system, dole out said sprinkler water only on the plants that need it and takes account of naturally obtained rain, tells the owner if the garage is open after dark, turns on the fireplace it is dark before 10:00 in the evening, and is made from an abundance of recycled material. To top it off, the basement has the original bar and decorations from the bar "O'Connell's". The house is also purchasable, unlike many other smart houses that don't leave showroom floors.
    2. The IoT, or Internet of Things, is the wireless connection between the technology in the house, what they monitor, the tags the monitored objects wear so that the technology can identify it, the network, and the systems that anywise and crunch the collected data. This connectivity between item, home, and person is what makes a smart home a smart home.
    3. The main control system is the brain of the house, monitoring the info, distributing energy and maintaining energy usage, dividing work, and running systems automatically. I would personally love a smart house, considering it makes household tasks easier while using green technology to lessen and diminish electricity bills.

  3. 1 I would say it would be the outside of the house because this house would take more energy in the winter than in the summer and in summer the windows have polarized combine in the glass of the windows so there would be least heat gaining in the house.

2 the idea of living in a smart home that takes care of itself. But have five complex item inside the house that would be The sensors , The identifier , The network , The data analyzer and The thing
these would have be given that much of the technology exists already, you might think building an Internet of Things is really quite a simple task, but putting everything together is likely to prove much more complex. One problem is that the whole concept has been hyped as a massive commercial opportunity, so lots of different companies are rushing to develop and market competing technologies. That raises the immediate difficulty of getting rival systems to talk to one another.

3 I wouldn't build a height tech house because all that technology would be time consuming and it would be expensive and there would be so many errors in the system . I would have to pay someone to redo all of the system that would be a lot of money to pay for someone to do that. main control system would work as like a motherboard because that motherboard would have to control to all the system in the house.

  4. 1. Well I looked at some really cool smart houses, the odd question in this situation of which company is best in a product not too commercialized, I would say Honda. Honda is most the most innovative company in smart houses, with their super energy efficient smart home.

    2. The IoT, or internet of things, is a wireless connection that connects technologies all around the house. They apply a certain level of intelligence to your everyday appliances.

    3. The main control system works as the brain of the house, keeping track of info and managing the output of electricity and energy around the house. Having a smart house would be ultra cool, I wouldn't know the start of building one though, I rather just buy one if I ever got the money. There a slice of the future, a hint into the kinds of houses we’ll see in the future.

  5. 1. The Hiscox Home is a really interesting idea, it is less about having a computer that is also a house, and more about the way the surfaces are made. Using new tech to make "self cleaning" counters or "self healing" floors which fix scratches themselves. It is very interesting to see innovation and tech not based in plastic and silicon.

    2. The Internet of Things have everything to do with. The point of a Smart Home is to make life easier, The point of the Internet of Things is that everything is connected.Instead of needing to remember what you need to get at the store your fridge will just tell you e.g. "Man, I had a hard day, standing here keeping ur stuff cold n such, how was ur day? PS we r out of milk."

    3. I for the most part would, it is a very interesting idea and is going to happen sooner or later, so why be ahead of the curve. The one I would not add to my home is cameras, yes they CAN do good but it seems like the bads out way the goods. I like privacy and if people can see me in my home 24/7 that is not privacy, just imagine what hackers could do if you had cameras in your house, yes with a smart house they can turn on and off stuff but at least they can't see me.

    1. 3.5. The main control system is exactly what it sounds like. It is the big computer keeping track of all the info that your appliances, A/C, and security systems are getting at any point in time.

  6. 1.) The "smart home" market is pretty small at the moment. Out of all of them, I think Honda has the best head-start, but it's still a pretty small list of companies putting stuff out there right now.

2.) It seems like right now, everything that is being developed is with Bluetooth or internet. You can control you air, lights, alarm system, all with a touch of a button. It makes your house somewhat "smarter," but I feel like these sorts of things just make it more vulnerable. Soon hackers wont just be able to access a bank account, but also your house.

3.) The main control is something that acts as an overseer to everything going on in the house. It monitors every statistic from the house, and can control it. I would not bring something like this into my house, it seems unnecessary and way too underdeveloped to want it in my home.

  7. 1.) One that kind of seemed to have interesting ideas, though at times it went a little bit far for functions and such seemed to be Weston Homes, as their house seemed to be a little promising for the idea of a smart home. Although since it still is rather early and unheard of somewhat, there are likely going to be better companies in due time.
2.) The Internet of Things is basically what ties the whole idea of the Smart Homes together, as without the IoT, home devices wouldn’t be able to connect and therefore, it would pretty much remove the “smart” portion of “smart home”.
3.) The main control system basically manages all of the technology involved in the smart house, as it constantly monitors and sets up many of the devices in the home. I honestly don’t really see myself having a too high tech house, I’m just too classic in some ways, things like that I prefer to have normal, and also it would probably be rather expensive to maintain, so it doesn’t feel like I would have as much use for it.

  8. 1. I believe that Honda has the best ideas in development of high tech homes. I believe that their comprehensive home development in the future. Their attention to detail in the features provided with the home are what won me over. The fact that they included emission-efficient concrete and furniture in the house was incredible. I also loved the touch of the different colored lights. Not only were they more efficient, they were also another way that the home could become more in tune with the humans living within it. I also loved the heating/cooling system. I have always been a huge fan of geothermal energy and have wondered why is was not being used more globally. I was glad to see that they incorporated it into the design of the house, along with the solar panels. I also appreciated that the car was directly connected to the power grid of the home. Again, this just further allows the house to become connected to the humans and their everyday lives.

    2. The Internet of Things has a lot to do with making a smart home, well, “smart.” It allows all the components of the house to be interconnected through sensors and tags. It allows the windows to “know” when to close based on data from outside sensors. It also allows the home to “know” when the car has been plugged in to charge, so that it can send power to the garage. It even extends beyond technology-technology connections. A refrigerator (a technological machine) can interact with the items inside it, such as eggs, cheese, juice, etc. Those are not technological items, but the refrigerator is able to identify them through tags and inform the human of when they need to restock. Without the IoT, a smart home would just be a regular house with really cool individual gadgets.

    3. The main control system is the central unit to the home. It controls and monitors all the electric components. Each piece of the home is wired through this control system so they can be turned on and off at given times. It also manages the energy usage in the house and how it is distributed. It functions much like the brain of the house as it monitors all the data that comes in, interprets it, and then sends out directions about what to do. I would not build a high tech system in my current house because I believe that if you are going to own a smart home, you need to build it from the ground up. If you try to embed such an advanced system into a preexisting house, I believe that you miss out on some of the features and are more likely to have issues with the integration of the technology. I would certainly own a smart home but would not try to make my current home one.

  9. 1) I have not really found any technology that I feel profoundly changes anything that happens today. The people that I thought did the best job were Philips, Nest, and Honda. The Philips Hue bulbs combine energy-efficiency with personalization that people enjoy. The ability to control not only if the lights are on or off from an app but also the color of these lights would allow for much better utilization of lights in different scenarios. At parties, you could change the lights to signify specific rooms or just for fun. The energy efficiency in the bulbs themselves as well as the app makes sure that even the most lazy people will be able to turn off their lights. Nest also has the right idea as the thermostat learns your preference and daily cooling and heating schedule and tries to apply it or make suggestions. These suggestions could help people who spend tons of money on cooling and heating as it would adjusts when they are gone and use the app to start cooling or warming their house when they are almost home. Honda has the great idea of using solar energy that can power the whole house and an electric car. Honda has it best as they realize since our technology is going to the hippie, I mean, electric, environmental side of the spectrum that a house that produces its own energy would also need to power the car and still have some left over.

    2) The IoT, otherwise known as the Internet of Things, is crucial to this whole ‘smart home’ process. This is what allows these apps and internet application to connect to all the smart technology in the house. It uses RFID tags and electronic sensors to communicate what they want the appliance to do. This has been going on for years with intruder alarms. All it needs is something that is tracked, an identifying tag, a sensor or multiples, a network and a data analyzer. The thing being tracked is what we want to monitor so it could be yourself, a pet, a home or bigger. The intensifier is something that tells things apart and the sensors detect and identify what each object is whether it be a thermometer to reed switches. Then, a network connects these sensor and tags to computers and phones. Finally, the data analyzer takes data by the hundreds, thousands, or millions. Then, it can be used to improve or fix the system for yourself or for companies.

    3) The main control system does what the name implies. It controls the whole system of the smart house. By doing this, it can communicate and distribute the energy where it is needed. It can also conserve energy by taking it away from other places and move it around. This kind of system would need to be built into a house during its original construction. That way it could be wired directly in the house and quite easily instead of ripping into walls of a current house and still not making it perfect. With a new construction, there is a much better chance of total integration as it can be put in inconspicuous places that can be planned around.

  10. 1. I think right now that Honda has the best ideas right now for the development of these new smart and high tech homes. They are trying to make their smart home efficient in a variety of different ways. It could have occupants use less water without sacrificing their quality of life, but only by cutting certain consumptions like when someone uses the sink, shower, or baths. Also this house would be in the use of mainly green energy from the use of solar panels. They also designed a Home Energy Management System which would be found in the garage. This system is supposed to monitor the consumption of energy within the home as well as control and optimize it. I really like how they are trying to incorporate solar panels more it would really make a difference in the energy we use on a regular basis. Plus it would probably help cut down on the electrical bill. I love these kinds of ideas they come up with, these houses will be amazing to help people with their everyday lives.

    2. The internet of things would have a huge part in this since it would be the main reason that the smart homes would work. The internet of things would have everything in the house be interconnected so it could react in certain ways. Take a refrigerator for instance being able to recognize the items within it and be able to tell you what you need to go buy or even better it would be able to order the food itself. Also another feature would be the temperature within the house, the thermometer could send you how hot or cold it is and you could control it from where you are in the house with something like a smartphone.

    3. The main control system is the brain of the home, monitoring and adjusting as it sees fit. It monitors all of the electrical components of the home and makes sure the electricity is being used efficiently. I think I would like to have a system like this just because it would make the house much more efficient and have everything connected to it.

  11. 1. I think the best smart house company on the market at the moment is Honda. All of the smart houses have similar features, where everything in the house is connected and can be controlled with the touch of a button. The thing I like with Honda is just that I like how their houses look. I like the simple yet elegant look of the houses. Other than that, though, I do not notice any other really big differences between the different smart house companies.

    2. IoT, or the internet of things, is what allows the smart houses to have all of the appliances to work together. All the electronics in the house, such as the lights, the A.C., the T.V., or anything else are all connected through the IoT. This allows for all them to be controlled simultaneously through the use of a single control panel or remote type of thing.

    3. The main control system works by using the IoT to connect to every electronic appliance in the house. The user can then very easily control the entire house. I would most definitely get a high tech house system if I could afford it. It would honestly be so much fun to be able to sit in one place to use any appliance in your house. It would also be cool to have your house talk to you, kind of like Siri. It would be cool but creepy at the same time.

  12. 1. Honda made a house that is eco friendly and safe for environment this house can generate its own power and you can live off the grid the weather for the house is conditioned for heating and cooling

2.The IoT is the smart home and Internet of thing was the first in the 20th century to of a machine for living in and slowly metaphor and turned it into reality

3.It is controlled by built in sensors and programming. Yes I would build a high tech system in my home then everything would be easy and you would have all of your appliances connected throughout the house

  15. 1. I found the Ecotech home to be the most interesting. With how they had used left over supplies to build the house. I love that they had actually cared for the house.

    2. Back in the 1900’s, a brilliant architect had described a home to be a “machine you can live in”.

    3. You have to plug everything into a small control unit and you would control everything by a House code that is plugged into the Control unit.

  16. 1. The company that has the most interesting ideas was the Welsh School of Architecture's Solcer house. The house is so interesting because how much energy it makes compared to how much takes. The house also looks good which is a huge plus.

    2. What the internet has to do with tech homes is that wi-fi allows people to wirelessly control their house from devices like the ipad. It connects everything in your house to one device.

    3. A main control system works by connecting almost every electronic thing in your house to one device. If I could build a high tech control system I would. I would because it allows me control my whole entire house from 1 device which is cool, but it also adds security to my house which is a different plus.

  17. 1. I feel like one of the best companies when it comes to smart home ideas is Honda. Their video on TechKnow about the house of the future shows their prototype/idea of a house in action. One part that really interests me is that the solar panels on it can generate two times the energy needed for the day if it is sunny. This means that there will be no energy consumption that comes from somewhere else. The house will power itself using natural conditions. The use of water for heating and cooling is just insane. It is such a cool idea, and all of the ways they save energy, such as using drain water heat to heat up colder water, is just so inventive. It is also interesting how much the Honda smart home is similar to a regular home, just with some added pieces that only make the experience better and more efficient.

    2. The IoT, or Internet of Things, has to do with smart homes because it is used to control the house appliances. Right now, there are already many appliances in homes, such as lights, locks, alarm systems, etc., that can be used and activated through a wireless connection. This means that the house can be controlled as if there was someone there when there really is nobody home. In a house of the future, people plan on connecting every appliance to the Internet of Things, making it all connect and work with each other to make the living experience the best and the safest.

    3. The main control system works by using wireless connections and sensors to connect all of the appliances to one main system, which can be just a home computer. The computer can then get a program put onto it that allows the user to create commands and macros that will automate the appliances. They can turn certain appliances on or off at set times of the day with this, or just do it instantly. At this point in my life, I do not think I would build a high tech system in my home. I spend most of my time in my room playing games, and I do not need to control my systems from different areas. It would not really affect my life too much. It may become more useful to me when I actually own a house and am responsible for every single thing in it.

  18. 1)I feel that Google and Samsung have the best approach because they have a more open approach in making everything compatible with each other. Samsung has some of the best features as they link all of your smart appliances together to your phone.

2)the Internet of Things is not only where all of your appliances and devices are connected through the internet, but it can also be applied almost anywhere making every system more efficient and having millions of applications.
    3) The main control system uses many sensors connected to appliances and devices to collect data that is sent through a network and compiled together so that it can all be viewed in one place whether it be your phone or a laptop so that your lifestyle can be more efficient or "smarter". I personally would not implement such a system because it is not the norm and would be confusing in a world where everywhere else there is hardly an internet of things in society.

  19. 1. The company I feel had the best idea and already created item was Textronics. I thought it the most needed and most useful because of how it works. Textronics made comfortable sports bra's and other accessories with sensors that can detect heart rate, they also said you could make clothes detect things such as breast cancer and other sicknesses. If they succeed in making clothes detecting such things it could stop a lot of problems in peoples lives where they develop such diseases, if these sensors could detect something like breast cancer in its early stages it would largely benefit the user.

    2. the IoT is one of the main parts of these things, the IoT controls such electronics to do certain things. IoT's purpose is to control electronic objects such as vehicles, buildings, and other things that involve electronics. Considering smart homes are the topic, IoT has a huge deal with this, they are the network behind the smart house machines and allows them to function.

    3. The main control system can be different for all machines, one of the main control systems is a Windows or Linux computer that involves the Computer-controlled X-10 system. This projects main control system is a computer, and it works by setting your own macros that you can control with your computer to turn of lights, turn on the TV, or other sorts of using the smart home object. I would not build one of these high tech systems in my home, or any other high tech systems. The reason for this is because I feel as if it wouldn't benefit my home as much as it says. I would rather not bother of dealing with something like this considering the low chance of a robbery or something similar. The only reason I would install a high tech system is to play with, like if friends were coming over I would flicker lights when operating the main control system hidden and scare them or something else.

  21. 1). I think that Honda have the best ideas for the home of the future and high tech homes. As their designs are Eco-friendly and saves a lot energy through out the day, As the house uses ground energy to heat up water and also uses drained water from your shower to heat up the cold water. And this house is also equipped with the solar panels which allows them to use solar energy and that also reduces Carbon emission. The main feature about this house was that you can control the amount of energy the house is taking and also monitor, where most of the energy is being used up.

2). The internet of things aka "IoT" is what allows you to control your house with one device like your Ipad/tablets or your Phones, which helps you to be more organized and enjoy your Smart house.

3). The main control system is the brain of the home, which monitors and adjust according to the needs, like take the extra energy where the system doesnt need and transfers that to the place where it needs that energy.

  22. 1 The Honda smart home its big it produces its own power, it gets solar energy also it is naturally heated by the sun and the earth and plus it has cool appliances and it has a nice design i like it would be cool to live in.

    2. Well IOT lets you control a lot of appliances and machines and these futuristic houses can also be controlled by a smart device.

    3. The main control system controls everything and keeps track of energy usage and stuff. I would love to do this to my house because it would make a lot of things more convenient and my home would be alot cooler and more cost effective also hopefully more Eco friendly.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1) i really like Nest Learning Thermostat it is made by net it has a lot of really convenient features for your home like heating and cooling systems, including gas, electric, forced air, heat pump, radiant, oil, hot water, solar, geothermal, and Humidity sensors

    2) TIoT it allows you to control your house/appliances with a device like your phone or tablet

    3) i would it might make your home a lot safer but all this stuff is really expensive. also there might be a lot of problems after installation

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. I really like the X-10 system idea because it is really simple and does not require an expensive home that comes with automatic features. I think it is cool that you can just get the system on a laptop or smartphone, and control and make simple patterns for the electronics in your house quite cheaply and easily.
    2. The IoT relates to the idea of smart houses because it is the idea that all devices have a way to communicate with each other and people, and smart homes would be able to control the electronics of the house and mange who is in the house, who should not be, and what people want and need.
    3. The main control system works by some things happen automatically due to the environment and weather, and other things you can set yourself to do at certain times that are the most convenient for you. I would consider installing a complicated system like this into my home if it was cheap because it would make my life easier and it would be less for me to worry about.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. I liked the X-10 idea. It seemed simple but not so simple that it did not do anything. It does not even need an expensive house but it should be somewhat advanced. You can get the systems on your smartphone or computer and control it from there.

    2. The IoT allows you to control these on your smartphone or tablet

    3. I would not do any of these modifications to my home because I just enjoy being old fashioned and doing things manually. It keeps me busy and it teaches me not to be lazy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. The Honda smart home is really nice all around, with it eco friendly was or recycling water used throughout the day, and also using water to heat and cool down the house. That was the most important part of the house, its use of water to regulate the temperature of the house.

    2. The Internet of Things is the idea of having technology in the home that is AI in a sense, aware of its surrounding and preferences of the user. A lot of these homes have technology similar to an AI, but not quite there. Most of them are on a timer, or temperature reactive.

    3. Having this kind of technology in my home would be really convenient for living. It is almost too convenient, as I wouldn’t have to do anything after setting everything up. It would also cost a lot, and I gotta say, way too much for me right now.
