11. The Internet

As you signed on to this homework blog today, did you even consider how easy it is for you to access the Internet?

Explore some interesting and informative insights about the web:

Take a look at each site.  Read some, skim others.  Interact.  Then elaborate on what interested you the most.

1.  Identify the two sites, from the links above, that you liked the best.

2.  Discuss two things you learned and how this information affects you personally.

3.  Think about what you read.  Intelligently share your thoughts.

  1. 1.The two links i like was the The internet map and World internet Users because they gave more information and gave interesting thought out the world and they show us how it look out in the maps of the year of 2015.

    2. What i learned 1 there was different maps to the diagram of the earth to internet was showing the displaying of the scheme objects than mountains or roads but there would different maps to show those type of maps. 2 When i went to the first website you show us The internet map i read into it i was amazed that we were the biggest one to be on the internet at the most.

3.To say my thoughts out i would say that to the Digital attack map we would all ways be attack and to be the largest that is just crazy because we will at all times we would have to step our game and have a big firewall to take all of those attacks and have see what would happen at a early time to see what would happen.

  2. 1. I chose the Internet Censorship one, and the Internet attacking map. The Internet Censorship talked about how other countries are not free to use the internet as we are. It is amazing how even China, who has the biggest population, has barley any internet access. Us as Americans can't exactly fathom that idea. The internet attacking map was a map of the world with lines showing where countries were attacking over the internet. It was interesting because most of the lines were either going to or from the US.

    2. The Internet Censorship site made me a little confused as to why other countries were blocking certain elements. I feel that if countries like (for example) India have access to the internet, nothing should be blocked. The internet is a very resourceful tool where people can state their opinion. Another example is China, they block everything except new laws. The Digital Attack Map was a big surprise to me because I did not know that either everyone want's to attack the US by internet, or everyone was being attacked by the US. It makes me feel scared that our own country is attacking other countries over the internet and that we are being attacked over the internet.

    3. Over all, I find it weird that the internet is not as I thought it was. I learned that it can be a weapon and an ally. Even on the internet, you don't think about other people on the internet or other countries because it is just not custom to think about people dying in Africa. Instead, we are crying over a random animal that died while on video. As we all know, the internet is a dangerous place, but us as Americans, we should feel lucky to not have all this censorship on our internet like some other countries do.

  3. 1.) I choose the map of the internet is the most interesting, and the digital attack map, the internet map because i think it is interesting to be able to see what websites are most popular from every corner of the earth, that uses the internet, i chose the attack map because i think it is interesting that attacks are most often seen in south Korea and the U.S. and even more interesting is that most of the attacks from the U.S. and South Korea are directed towards themselves.
2.) I learned that there are many foreign websites that are completely unknown to us, but are basically as popular as google in their country. I also learned that the U.S. and South Korea are large targets for digital attack.
3.) I find it intriguing that the internet is more complex than it seems, it goes much farther than just google, and all of the sites we know, there are millions of trillions of websites we have never heard of, foreign or not.

  4. 1. As I started looking around the website’s, I found that the U.S is the most used internet destination in the world. As american’s, we use internet everyday. If we look at the time of the late 1900’s, We had to buy this big ol’ clonky machine that was very loud called a desktop computer and it changed the world forever. It led humans to larger discoveries that changed the human race forever. Not only that we had the phone become mobile, That changed everything as we see the phone.
    - With computer engineering that changed the way we live, It led to thumbscanning Identification for your phone. Like who would think of that?!?! That’s freaking awesome!! Of coarse that was in 2014, but having a DNA scanner inside your mobile device not only scared the public but made some think harder to how anyone can think by going deeper inside the scanner to change other accesories like face recognition and eye recognition. Even though that’s already a invention but it would be awesome to have all of it inside one phone.
    2. I think this article made me think harder of what I have today and how I have to think about what surrounds me. Not only the internet to think about but thinking about the deeper components like your home button being a DNA scanner while it is still a button to access a feature on your phone is insane! Like holy crap!! Thats F!#@*%$ awesome!

  5. 1. The World Internet Users website was very very interesting. This site shows each region's amount of internet usage and growth. The Web is dead, long live the internet. This site show statistics of how apps are being used more than the World Wide Web, and the numbers are staggering.

    2. I am personally affected by the internet usage site because Riot makes Oceanic servers a higher priority than NA servers, but this site clearly shows that NA uses significantly more internet than Oceanic. I also learned that I use more apps rather than the WWW, I use the YouTube App on my phone more than I do just going to the website.

    3. Intelligently share our thoughts? Hmm. Well other what I have said so far, Africa uses more internet usage than the middle east and Australia combined! Also the growth of internet usage from 2000-2015 was insane, 806%!!!I learned that the usage of the World Wide Web is declining as the usage of apps is increasing.

  6. 1) The Web is Dead, Long Live the Internet article is really eye opening. I never thought, in my everyday routine, that I didn't use the web. It never even really hit me that the internet and the web were two different things. The Internet of Me is actually an idea I had stuck in my head for a while. I thought that someone sat at a computer and "monitored" my "likes" on facebook and sort of personalized my feed. I never really thought that it was true.

    2) Like I stated in the previous answer, someone looks at your activity on social media and personalizes it to make sure that it has stuff that you'd be interested in. It kind of worries me that someone could have this image of me and how I am in their head without even talking to me let alone seeing me. Something else I learned is on the Internet Censorship website. It says that the US is "free" which mean that very little internet activity is tracked (compared to China and Russia). This was a slight surprise to me. I thought that our government would be stricter with internet activity but they're not thank god.

    3) All i can really say is that the Internet is taking over. I'm pretty sure that this was already noticed by many, many, people but it took me a while to process this information. Like it was there in my head but now that someone "said it" out loud made it stick I guess. And I learned the difference between the Web and the Internet. Good for me.

  7. the websites that caught my attention the most were
    http://internet-map.net/
    http://www.digitalattackmap.com/#anim=1&color=0&country=ALL&list=0&time=16733&view=map

the reasons behind that is the first one is about how country use the internet and how much of it majority is thanks to the USA which doesn't surprise me in anyway but it shows how we use the internet to how much is being used and this kind of table can be used for other things in a way.

the second one shows DDOS or Distributed Denial of Service during January of 2013 to present day of October 30 2015 and a DDOS is when you over whelm the internet with info causing it to crash entirely which almost happened one year but it can show whos using alot of the info much like USA to the UK/europe

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1. I like both the The Internet Map and the Digital Attack Map.

    2. One interesting piece of information I learned is how massive the web is. AS cliche as it sounds, I mean that I didn’t realize the amount of websites that existed. Whenever someone give an example of a website, it’s always Google or Facebook. However, there are websites like pokermix.com, a website that few have heard of but it still exists. Another interesting factoid is that the US actually “attacks” itself a lot, otherwise known as gathering information within its country. For two hours, data was gathering within the US, showing how much information the government really has on all of us.

    3. What really interested me about all these articles is they showed how the once simple web has grown to such a massive size. Even more expansive than that is now there are apps that use the internet but not web browsers, demonstrating how ingrained the internet is in our society. It’s become a part of government activity as there are now national cyber attack between countries. It just is crazy how large this once small internet has grown.

  9. 1) I like the Google transparency report and also the Internet Map
2)From what i learned from the google transparency report is that Google is getting many request from governments to give them user data and that effects me personally because I dont want the government invading my privacy and looking at what im doing 24/7
2a)What i learned from the internet map is that its not a literal map but its composed of circles and what makes up those circles are cites and the size of that circle is determined by the traffic of that site
3)Well what i can say from learning these things are the internet is slowly taking over but not just by the people using it but it could be by the government because as years go by the government keeps pushing for user data and personally i feel thats a no no.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. The two most interesting sites to me was the digital attack map and internet censorship as both of those sites I learned something new about the internet in our country and other countries.

    2. The digital attack map really shocked me as I didn't think the U.S would have the most DDOS attacks going in and out of it. I was shocked by this as I thought Russia or South Korea would have more DDOS attacks. This affects me as streams that I watch get DDOS every once in a while or even websites and services I use get DDOSed and if they do get attacked my info could be leaked. The internet censorship also interested me a lot. With us being free on internet we don't think of the other countries that aren't totally free on the internet. I was honestly shocked that not more countries are fully free on the internet. This affects me as I am fully against censorship and believe that that the internet should be not censored in other countries.

    3. From everything I have read I am starting to see that the internet is diffidently growing every day, but I also think the internet is going to start being censored more as it grows. To me the internet is a place where things shouldn't be censored anywhere. I also feel that as the internet grows we lose more privacy on the web. The U.S already wants user data and is probably going to get it. If the U.S government is able to get our user data most likely other countries will follow in getting their user data.

  11. 1. I found the “Internet of Me” post and the Internet Censorship map the most interesting. They really make you think about just how much the internet is part of your life. As well as how the internet has caused the government and corporations to become more involved in the lives of individuals.

    2. One thing that I found fascinating was learning just how expansive the Netflix algorithm is. I had expected this from sites like Facebook and Google because their main priority is to provide the information that people are looking for, whether that is information about your friends’ interests or research for a paper. I had not previously thought about the fact that services such as Netflix would use systems that are just as complex. It makes perfect sense as Netflix is a corporation so obviously they would want to make you come back as often as possible and they would do that through personalizing your experience. It really makes you reexamine all of the online services that you use. The second source was interesting to me because there seems to be such a great divide between the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere. The Western Hemisphere seems to have largely more free access to the internet. This seems to be correlated with the type of government that the country has. It could also be a result of the proximity to other countries and how they censor their internet. It is an interesting concept of how you could evaluate the overall “freedom” of a country based on their internet.

    3. I think that the internet it such a large entity in our lives today that there is no simple way to view it. I have always been wary of the internet but have used it anyway. The thought of how much information has been collected about me, without my knowledge, is simply mindboggling. It raises the question of just how much privacy people are willing to sacrifice in order to use the internet in the most efficient manner. Personalized browsing has definitely made things easier for the average user, but at what cost? I have been raised in a family that values rights and privacies above much else. That includes anonymity in the government and in corporation. However, we still use the internet on a regular basis. The question is, would humanity be able to return to life without the internet if their privacy was encroached on? Or has the internet and the risks associated with it become permanently ingrained into our society?

  12. 1. I really enjoyed reading "The Internet of Me" article where I was able to learn a little about how our searches and websites we go onto are going to be personalized based on our interests. Also I read "The Web is Dead, Long live the Internet' article that showed me that many people are not really using the web anymore over their apps that they can use. These both definitely make you think how far the internet and the web have changed over time, once being harder to use now we are able to easily do many of our daily tasks on them.

    2. While I was reading the article "The Internet of Me" I learned that many websites and apps on the internet are really trying to show you what you want to see all the time so you have more incentive to come back. Many sites have been able to personalize information you specifically see based on what your profile has been doing on that site. Though google doesn't use the same algorithm as these sites as it uses one that bases the information you see off of how relevant it is to the search. I personally think that personal effects on a search or what a website shows you is not that amazing unless it is something I am really into at the time, I would rather see something that is new to me that may interest me. Also on the article "The Web is Dead, Long Live the Internet" I noticed that they believe that not as many people are using the web anymore while they are on the internet. Though I still use the internet quite a bit when I am looking for specific information rather that going to the library to find a book that may have the same or better information. So this does not really apply to my life when they say that most people aren't using the web.

    3. I kind of figured that the internet was our best and most useful invention when it was created. I think the internet is a good and bad thing though since many people hide behind it to get what they want or to hurt people, and that is not OK. The internet will probably be a large part of our lives for years to come though since it has become so ingrained into our lifestyles, many can't live without it for even an hour. I think it will become an even larger part of our lifestyle with all of the new personalizations that are being made. Everyone will just use it even more... wait a minute I'm using the internet right now. :/

  13. 1. The two links I like the best are the internet map and internet censorship because this two give the most information and are the most interesting

2.The internet map shows the amount of internet use in every country and the internet censorship as made a virtual Private Network so when you travel it provider IVPN and it is based on year-old data this don’t affect me very much.

3.I find it very interesting that so much internet use by china and india use a lot of the internet and it is no surprise that the number 1 that use the most internet is the USA and it is cool that we have invented a private way to use the internet when you travel

  14. 1. My favorite two links from the list were the “Digital Attack Map” and “Google Transparency Report.”

    2. I learned that there’s a lot more governments that want users personal data than I thought, which affects me because it is personal data that the government doesn’t really need to know or have any right to know unless they have a reason to need it. I also learned that a lot of things on the website “learn” about me by collecting data such as what I search or pictures I linger on, and use this data to make recommendations for me or show ads I would be more interested in.

    3. Governments should not take users data without reason, although they do it anyway. They have no reason to hoard data from innocent people without their consent and without cause. It should be against the 4th amendment, but governments still count it as legal.

  15. 1. The two that I liked the best was the World internet users, and the Internet censorship. They both had some interesting information I didn't know, or that I thought wrong about, like the amount asia uses the internet over us.

    2. For one thing, I was really surprised at the percents of internet usage in reality. I learned that we use the internet about as much as Africa, as well as the fact that Asia is almost half of the world's internet usage. I was also surprised just how little internet Oceana uses. Other then that, I learned that not just China and North Korea have blocked internet, I know other places had it too but not where.

    3. I thought that north america would be one of the bigger internet users of the world, around 15 or so percent, but I guess I was wrong. In the end it makes sense that Asia would have the most users of the internet, but almost half was a number that surprised me.

  16. 1.digital attack map and internet censorship.

2.That some places in the world search some websites more than others. Also that most of the places that we visit such as you tube and Facebook will mostly be apps and not on the internet.

3 I expected the United states to receive the most DDOS attacks so I wasn't surprised also i expected china to be sending out the most DDOS attacks. I was also surprised that Asia had the most internet users but I also noticed Americans will be on the same websites as others.

  17. My two favorite sites from this list were the internet map and the digital attack map. I likes these two sites because they were simple, interactive, and very interesting. The internet map was especially cool because it showed the most popular sites right now.
One thing I learned from these two sites was that anyone can see what I am actually doing on the internet at anytime. It is not hidden. If the government wants to see what I am doing on the internet they can. Another thing I learned from this activity was just how popular google, facebook, youtube, and yahoo are. These four sites are by far the biggest circles on the map, meaning they have the most visitors. There are no circles that come even close to their size.
This shows how important it is to watch what you are doing on the internet. You are not as anonymous as you think you are when you are surfing the web, so be careful what you say to other people/ Do not give any personal information, and also do not be mean on the internet, as your identity can easily be figured out.

  18. 1. The two sites that I liked best from the list are the Internet of Me and the Internet Map.

    2. One thing that I learned about is how the government becomes involved when it comes to censorship. I knew that there could be serious consequences to online speech, but I had no idea that this kind of censorship was in so many countries. I always felt like it was only a serious issue in a few countries around the world. It is also crazy to learn about the percentages of users on the internet from different regions. I never would have guessed that North America ranked 4th. I always assumed we would have been one of the higher amounts of users, but I guess other places do have larger populations in total, so it makes sense.

    3. One thing that I found very interesting to think about when it comes to the Internet is the whole idea of not actually using the Web as often. Everybody is turning to using apps, rather than going onto the Web and searching for whatever they need to use. It does make sense to use apps, since they are more convenient and easier to access, but it is crazy to imagine what will happen to the Web. It will always be used, but how often will people really be on it in the future, when there will be apps for anything anyone could possibly need to do. It is a really cool realization to think about and read about.

  19. The 2 sites, I found interesting was World Internet Users statics and Digital attack map

I didnt knew there are many people in developed nation who dont have access to internet, while on other hand that internet users growth is more than 1000% in Africa. I think everyone should get access to internet as its very useful in a way, while
digital attack map shows how data is being stolen from where and when, I was surprised how many people download stuff illegally. This doesnt really affects me.

After reading that, I think all people should be able to access Internet and dont download stuff illegally. and the Internet map
so colorful reminded me of a game ( Agar.io) and was very informative, well it shows data what country got most sites on the Internet. and was surprised by the 6,839.1% growth in Africa who have access to internet

  20. 1)I believe that the two map sites, the Digital Attack Map and the Internet Map, were the best because they give visual information on how not only specific areas of the world but the entire world operates in terms of the internet.

2)I learned from the two sites that most websites are under servers in the United States. This affects me personally because that means because I am in the United States information from websites and game servers arrive to my destination quickly with little to no delay. I also learned that most cyber attacks on the United States originate from the United States. This affects me because that means that the United States is one of the most dangerous places for cyber attacks to occur.

    3) From what I have read I have discovered that many cyber attacks originate from unknown sources. This creates a huge problem in internet security because without knowing the origin of an attack, there is no way to stop it. There also seems to be a large concentration of servers located in the United States, which correlates with the amount of websites and cyber attacks in the U.S. Within the internet map there is an large increase in usage of internet everywhere in the world, showing the rapid globalisation of the internet.

  22. 1. The Web is Dead, Long Live the Internet and user internet status were my favorite sites.Because what I thought I knew but I learned.

2.I learned that the USA does not have the most internet users it actually is Asia. Most people actually don't use the World wide web, but use the internet instead.People use the WWW when there on there laptop or pc,but people who use their phones are actually on the internet not the WWW.

3.I personally think this is amazing information I originally thought the US had the most users on the internet but we aren't.I also thought when I was on my phone I was using the World Wide Web but im actually on the internet.

  23. 1. Out of the links provided, I liked the Internet Map and the Internet of Me articles the most.

    2. I made the connection from both the Internet Map and the internet usage article which featured Asia with the most internet consumption, but with the United States as putting out the most websites produced. I also learned more about internet customization or custom search filtering, which I have experienced first hand through Google search results.

    3. I think mostly about how the Internet has completely changed the world in just barely 30 years of existence. One of the articles mentions Internet Censorship and which countries have free use of the internet. Only a few decades ago, something like this would not even remotely be necessary and now multiple nations around the world have already legislated its use. I also noticed on the Internet map, just how much pornography made up the internet as a whole. The internet brings in a whole new age of communication and sharing of ideas, and one of the first and now biggest things it’s used for is the distribution of pornography.

  25. 1) One of the websites that I liked was the Digital Attack Map. Mainly because it shows what places on the map is getting attacked through internet. I find it really cool because it just shows who is getting messed up the most. Like if you look at the U.S. you can see the wide attacks we get from other places. It´s pretty funny cause North Korea is getting bombarded by everybody. Another good website that I liked was the, The Internet Map. This is pretty majestic because it shows you a whole ton of websites that you can go to. You could also find things that you have never heard of! So this place is pretty cool I got to mess around with it to see whats in this Galaxy of links.
    2) I think the one that mostly made connect to was the Digital Attack Map mainly because it shows me what place is getting hurt and what place is not. I just find it super cool that you could actually see what is under attack and what is not.
    3) What I think is that these sites are changing the world every time mainly cause of all the new places that are being added every minute. I just think that the internet is gonna grow HUGE! and it will not stop until it gets forced to be shut down.

  26. 1.) The internet map was a really cool website to look at. It provides a little way to look at how the internet would look visually on a grand scale, and tons of websites are shown. You can probably find you favorite website on this map somewhere.

The Digital Attack Map was also interesting to look at. To see where all the attacks are happening is really cool.

2.) I learned how popular certain website are, I had no idea reddit was #8 most used. I also learned how many attacks are happening, and how many of them are in Korea.

3.) These websites are really interesting to check out and read, and provide insightful thoughts and commentary about what we do and do not know about the internet.

  27. 1. I liked the internet map and internet attack map, because I like imagining the internet as a world and trying to figure out what would be the countries and cities and such, so the maps in general were interesting, but the internet attack gets bonus points because you can see each attack for whole timelines and having loads of intractable information.
    2. I learners how many attacks there usually were at any given time, and that I still had much to tern about DDoS attacks and viruses in general.

    3. The internet as we know it is constantly changing, and even hen we begin to think that there can't be anymore progress from here, we've already innovated all we could innovate, more comes. I am excited and terrified at what the future has to bring.

  28. 1. The internet map, And world internet users
    2. I found out that asia has the most people useing the internet and that facebook is the second largest website in the world.
    3. I think that way too many people use the internet

  29. 1) I liked The Web is Dead, Long Live the Internet and World Internet Users
    2) in the article the web is dead, long live the internet it says that we use apps on the internet and we are not on the web that's true because I do it all the time. in the article internet users I did not know that almost half of the worlds internet is used by Asia
    3) I cant believe that are growth in the us is only 190.4% and there's 7,260,621,118 people in the world to day

  30. 1. I choose the Web is dead because I think the way website are today there are lots of them are fraud and some are legit.
    2. In the article of the website is dead that long live the internet its says that when we use apps on the internet and we are not on the web maybe that's not true but i willing don't know I really don't use the internet all the time but I did't know most of the internet is used by Asia.
    3. And I really cant believe that the grown is 190.4% and there's over 8 million people in the world.

  31. 1. The two sites I liked the most are world internet users and the digital attack map. The world internet users site was nice since it allowed me to see how much each country actually uses the internet compared to others. The digital attack map was cool to see and is a nice visual compared to the other websites.

    2. I learned that the United States is the worlds largest user of the internet (even though I already new that). I also got to see some of the other major users of the internet which would be the United Kingdom and China. I also got to see the three major sites that are used which are Google, Facebook, and YouTube. This doesn't really surprise me even though Facebook isn't that popular anymore.

    3. Overall, I was kind of intrigued that a lot of the world doesn't have access to the internet which means that there is so much that they don't know is going on which is crazy since they obviously don't cover everything on tv. I also think that so many people in the world are using the internet that they forget about what is happening around them and that we do not connect with each other as much as we should. We lose so many opportunities that we have by just using the internet too much which is really too bad.

  32. 1. The digital attack map and the internet map were my favorites. I just like seeing how big each site is compared to the rest.
    2. I found the article on who's attacking who the one that impacts me the most, seeing where is being hacked the most useful. Seeing who is hacking who. Sources from Korea and Brazil are the most where they hack into other countries.
    3. It's great to see what sites are most popular in which countries and internationally.

  33. 1. I used "The Internet Map" and "The Digital Attack Map" as my two websites and they were my favorites for these reasons.

    2. The information really affected me in these websites because they had unique things that I never in a million years would have guessed. There were things such as little maps or graphs showing how many websites had been up in 2011 in all sorts of countries and the most shocking part of it was seeing that the U.S almost tripled the next highest area.

    3. Well the things I learned was websites can either be very similar or very distant on the "Web Map" and all of the similar sites can be connected in some way like springs. This keeps them close as far as information but also keeps them from being to close or identical.

  35. 1.) I personally liked the internet map and the internet attack map because the internet map shows how big the internet is and every web site in it and the internet attack map because it shows that their are a lot of people attacking everyone every where
2.) I learned that there is a lot of people using the internet and we are being attacked and other countries are attacking us using the internet.
3.) I read about everything and I was amazed by how much we use the internet and how careful we need to be because we could be hacked by anyone any where.
