6. Tech Questions

Ten Common Tech Questions...
and Their High Tech Explanations

1.  Read through the TECH ARTICLE.  Read all ten questions, all the answers.  Which answers did you know already?  Which answers had some new information for you?  (I'll be honest, I learned quite a bit from this article!)

2.  Think about technology today. Come up with two new questions, that "un-tech savvy" people might have about technology.  After you write your questions, describe how you would answer them.

  1. 1) Actually a new one for me is you can conserve your battery life as long as you dont overcharge it by having it plugged in while its at a hundred percent. But what i already knew is that joining open WiFi is making your device vunerable to be hacked.

    2) One of the main questions I get is "How do you screen mirror or What is screen mirroring?", and I tell them that when you screen mirror it shows the screen of your phone almost like projecting your computer on a screen. And on Android you go to your settings and go to the connections page and go all the way down it clearly says screen mirroring and once you click that you have to connect to the device you are trying to mirror

  6. 1: I knew the parts about resetting your router regularly, and public wi-fi, and also the bits about malware and trojans. I honestly did not know about why we need to eject USB drives, and that was good info to know. About the HDMI cables, I have never heard of that site but holy cow that is awesome to know for the future.

    2: Q: How can I make my Wi-Fi faster?
A: by turning off or disconnecting as many devices connected as possible. Especially devices that are streaming something like netflix.
Q: Why do I want a password on my phone?
A: you never know when you might lose it, and if there is not a password, it makes it ridiculously easy for somebody who stumbles upon your phone to steal all your personal information.

  7. 1. I did not know that leaving your charger in when you device is at 100% battery is not healthy for the battery. I did know about Viruses, Trojans and Malware. I did not know that people on public wi-fi networks could steal your information, that surprised me. I was aware that ejecting USBs was safer than just pulling them out, but I never knew why. I was aware of e-mail spam, and how people scam you with links. I had no idea that people charge so much for HDMI cords just because they know you will buy it, I thought there was something more to it. I also checked that Monoprice site, they've got some neat stuff for nice prices. I know about password strength and how easy it is to loose your log in if you're not careful. Waiting 10 seconds then rebooting your router was a trick my dad taught me and explained to me how it worked. Again my dad taught me about Torrents, he told me that the people putting the torrents out are of higher priority than those downloading them. A while back my dad got a World of Warcraft account and my brother and I loved playing on it. But my dad told us not to talk to anyone in the chat, because some people put links in the chat that memorize your password next time you log in, or they just tell you to download this addon that helps with beating a certain dungeon. So just to be safe I steer clear of any addons for my games.

    2. "How do I make my internet go faster?" What I mean by this question is when people ask how to make their browser load faster. The problem usually is that the person has too many extensions, or maybe there is some malware on the browser. My problem solver for this one, is clearing out the extensions and search engines in chrome. For Malware I use a program called "Malware-bytes." Another common question is "I forgot my password, what do I do?" With most logins now they have a simple "forgot password system" but it can be overwhelming or scary to an un-tech savy person. With most forgot password systems you only need to know your username to get a new password emailed to you. But what if they forgot their user name too? Well some forgot password systems don't have this, but putting in your email can also get you a new password.

  8. 1.) I already knew 9, 7, 6, 4, 2, 1. I didn't know why cables were so expensive, and #5 was really informative, and I thought it was really interesting to learn about it.

2.) "How do I stay safe from viruses" A good way to prevent yourself from getting viruses is to not download anything unless you are 100% sure what you are getting is safe. Also get a good antivirus like Norton or Avast. Antivirus software can protect you from things that you had no idea about, and warn you when something is coming in that is not trusted.

"How do I organize folders to store my pictures?" You can either save them directly to a folder on your hard drive, or put them in the ready-made "My Pictures" folder that is set up for you to store your photos. You can just drag and drop your pictures into there, and even create folders and sub-folders to organize them (Just press the keys Ctrl+Shift+N to quickly create a new folder).

  9. 1) I already knew that you dont have to completely drain your device's battery before charging it to make it last longer. My mom makes me and my brother charge our phones (if we get new ones) before using them. If we get our phones on a Thursday, we have to charge them overnight and we won't be able to use them until Friday.

    2) "How do I connect to wifi or other phones with bluetooth?"
"How often should I charge my phone?"
To connect a phone or other device to a wifi network, you must first access the settings. Once in the settings, there might be a tab labeled "Connections" or "Wi-Fi" or "Bluetooth". Click on whatever tab applies to your device, and switch the wifi and/or bluetooth on. With wifi, different networks will show up so select the network you wish to connect to and if a password is required, enter the password and then you should be connected. With bluetooth, other devices with their bluetooth turned on will be available for pairing. Select the device you wish to connect to and you should be paired with it.

I recommend to charge your phone at any time it's at 10% or lower. Charge to at least 80%. If possible, then to 100%

  10. 1. Most all of the question’s answers were somewhat new to me. Like that your battery doesn't really matter when you charge it as long as you don’t leave it charging over 100%. i knew that charging it over 100% was bad, but not exactly what it would do. I didn't know that public wifi was so unsafe, lucky for me I never use it. I did know about the hole USB situation and how you should always eject it, as well as how to tell if an email is spam or not.

    2. Well one of the best questions for the this generation is, “should I have a social media account and why?”, as well as, “is it safe to have one?” I would not really know how to go about answering this question, for I know my way around a computer and the internet, but I do not have a single social media account that I have ever used.

  11. 1.I Already know how viruses can bigger than you think and how many viruses can go through 9 and 8 i know a little bit of it but i didn’t know many people would see our items we use and how they could and would steal items from us. 1 that many people will not care about for Facebook they would just say no one is going to my count and they will and steal anything they had and more. but didn’t know about how number ten how you can make your laptop unhealthy by putting on there plug for too long .6 i couldn't believe that people will spam email to us and how they won’t care for anything they spam and won’t care what we buy 2

2.If no one think about this can many screensaver could have a virus on in it or not my answer would say maybe but in a screensaver it would have a danger of a virus inside but would like to help and check and see how you got a virus in a screensaver and i would tell them there is a virus or there is no virus screensaver second question is how did i got virus in my iPhone 4 i would say that maybe you click on something that wasn’t allow to click and you did i would help and rest it and start and show what may have virus and fix it.

  13. 1. I did not know that it was unhealthy for the battery to be still plugged in while it is at 100% battery. I did know about viruses and trojans and how they worked to attack the computer. I knew that people could steal information through a public wi-fi connection, but I did not know that they could see what you are doing. I did not know about why it is important to eject USB drives when taking them out. I always just assumed it made sure nothing was lost, but never knew that it queued up downloads. I knew about spam and how to check to see if it was legitimate or not. I have also received spam from friends, like it says it can do. I did not know that people sold cables for so much just because people are uneducated on it. I thought it had to do with quality. I knew that hackers could get people’s passwords from websites, and that it is good to have multiple passwords. I knew that routers could crash due to being too busy and overheating, but not about why you actually need to wait to plug it back in. I did not know people could easily see if you torrent stuff since I don’t try to. I knew that people should protect their personal data because it just seems like common sense.

    2. "How do I create a backup?" It depends on the computer that you are using, but it can often be found in the control panel in the System and Security tab, at least on Windows. For Mac which I have never tried it on, I would assume it is in the computer settings.
"How do I stop programs from opening on startup?" In the Task Manager, there is a tab that is called Startup Processes. Go here and disable any that are not useful. Doing this is useful since it can help speed up the startup speed of the computer.

  14. 1. The only one I didn't really know for sure was how to save your battery life. There is always so many people saying to do different things so it can be confusing what to do. If I wanted to, I could have just tried to look it up but I haven't really bothered to. Over the years I have just learned everything else either from experience or by others saying that stuff.

    2. The main questions I get are how to use a USB port or how often should I charge my computer. The answers would be to use a USB port, you would plug in your device and then search for your device if it doesn't pop up. I usually just tell people that I keep mine plugged in almost always but that they could plug there's in when it gets to about 60%.

  15. 1. The majority of this I knew about. Only Trojans and torrenting things. Only because I never torrent anything and don't know how it works. And I've honestly have never heard of a Trojan before. So that was pretty interesting to learn about on how it looks like a harmless program and how it sends harmful codes to your computer.

    2.
Question 1: "How do I copy and paste?" (Honest to god, I've been asked this by my parents.)

Answer 1: You can either highlight what you want to copy. Press Control c to copy it or command if on mac side. Then press Control v or command if mac side.

Question 2: "The internet isn't working. What do I do?"

Answer 2: If it doesn't work. Try restarting the computer. If that also doesn't work, restart your router. If all else fail. Just give the computer a day to rest.

  16. 1. One of the fact I didn’t know is that it is better to not fully drain or full charge your battery. It is actually better to keep it within the range of 60% to 90%. Another interesting fact I learned was how many different malicious programs there are. I knew about viruses, trojan horses and spyware but I had no idea scareware and worms what they did or that they even existed. I also didn’t know that when you unplugged something to get it to work (like a router), ten seconds is not just a random number. It actually is the shortest amount of time to discharge the capacitors that are usually the problem. While I did learn a lot, I also already knew why ejecting a USB drive was needed as it finished some of the needed projects in the queue. Another is determining spam emails from the normal ones.

    2. One question that most people don't know is why apps say in the App store that they are 10 MB but when looking in the memory after a couple months, it is taking up several hundred MB. This is a problem I stumbled upon as I felt like I had no memory left all the time. I learned that the apps store cache data from pictures, animations and so much more that are downloaded over time so the initial download time is almost instantaneous. The way to solve this is by deleting those apps and reinstalling them. This will clear the cache data. It works well on social media apps as all you have to do in log back in. However, on games, you could lose data so be cautious. Another question was why after downloading a OS on computers, the computer was very low on memory. The reason for this is that the old OS is still on there but the files are stored away within the bowels of the system. For example, when I updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7, my memory was so crunched only to realize that a folder called windows.old was in my hard drive, taking up over 40GB of my memory. While deleting this folder is an option, you will not be able to restore back to the previous OS so I recommend keeping the folder around to see how you like the new operating system. If you like it, delete the folder. If you don’t, do not delete the folder.

  18. 1. I didn’t know that it is harmful to keep your battery charging after it reaches 100%. Like a lot of other people, I knew trojans and viruses were bad, but had no idea what they did or how they worked. I had no idea that using public wifi had any effects, I thought wifi was all just wifi. Before reading this article, I didn’t know there was such thing as ejecting a drive, I always just pull the USB out. Now I know not to do that anymore. I have also never really thought about spam, as my email takes care of it for me. I didn't realize what kind of harm spam can cause. I have never bought a cable before, so I did not know they cost so much. I will be sure to look into finding a cheaper cable if I ever need one. I knew that hackers could get your passwords, and that stronger passwords are more secure. I didn’t know that it was important to wait ten seconds to plug your router back in. I had no idea that you could get caught torrenting so easily, most of my friends do it. I knew about the importance of internet privacy already, and the consequences that can happen.

    2. My mom often asks things like, “Why won’t my music play on my phone?”, and I just look at the phone, and there is usually some volume bar somewhere turned down, or she is not connected to the internet for spotify. Another question I have gotten is “What is the difference between all these different cords? Like USB, HDMI, etc”. I usually say each type of cord is used for transferring different types of information, and each one is important.

  20. I knew everyone of these except for "What do Viruses, Trojans, and other malware actually do?" and "How can I tell if an email is spam?" I may know what obvious spam is, but sometimes it's hard to tell when someone actually sends spam that looks almost like it's real. Also I never really looked into Viruses and all that ever, even though I've been very curious for several years what it comes from and is actually trying to do to your computer.

    2. One good question that my mom always asks me is "How do I move all of my old files and features from one computer to the other? Pictures?" I've helped her several times, but she still doesn't really get it. How I answered this question was you can either send the information through usb drive slowly a few things at a time or send it all at the same time through a process using a usb drive connecting to both. Also a good question "How do I connect to the internet?" This is a simple one, but I have had lots of older people ask me this. I will tell them to look at the bottom right of their computer screen, click on the icon that looks like a signal and choose the network that is your or that you want to connect to. Type in the password in the box that appears if it requires one.

  21. 1. I knew everyone knows what a Viruses does but sometimes people don't know what they do to your computer. I can tell if their is a Viruses on the computer because you get a butch of random ad's on the computer plus it slows down the computer. I never ever what a Viruses does but I do know what it does to your computer.

    2. My mom really doesn't ask any question to me like in any computer stuff like she has other plans to do rather then computer stuff she use her computer for school only.

  25. 10. I knew that it was unhealthy to leave your battery to charge overnight or past 100%, but I didn't know that lithium ion batteries performed better when in between 40 and 80 percent or that a battery should be discharged once a month to recalibrate it.
    9. I knew quite a bit about trojan viruses and malware beforehand and about the false security malware programs provide.
    8. I knew about the dangers of using unsecured wifi networks but I didn’t know that businesses were allowed to use their networks to monitor customer traffic.
    7. I didn’t know that Windows performs other tasks in the background while copying data.
    6. I know how to spot a scam and have received several phishing emails before.
    5. I knew that cables were unnecessarily expensive and that they could be purchased for much cheaper(I typically get mine for 5 bucks or less).
    4. I didn’t know that hackers had full access to usernames and passwords of users.
    3. I knew why I had to keep hard resetting my old router.
    2. I understand how to protect myself when I pirate movies or music and the legal ramifications if I get caught.
1 I understand the importance of protecting all my information whenever I am online.

“Why is my computer so slow?”
This is a very generalized question as there are several factors to it. You need to check through installed applications and delete any unknown applications as they could be virus bearing programs. Another major factor is dust. Computers slow down when overheating and dust is a great conductor of heat. Dusting out the computer, modem, router, and the area where the computer is stored can drastically improve performance.
“Why do I have all these toolbars at the top of my screen?”
Older people don’t actually read through what they’re agreeing to when updating or installing necessity programs like Java or if they use ask. When updating these, the client will ask if the user would like to install various toolbars or other applications using a checkbox to verify their response. These boxes are almost always autochecked and older people don’t realize that you need to uncheck the box in order to avoid installing those applications.

  26. 1. I already knew 90% of the tech article points, yet some of them seem a bit off. The fact the cables are expensive just because they know that you will but them is what surprised me. I thought that HDMI cables were more expensive because of ho they were mad (An all inclusive cable).

    2. Some questions that a new customer to a product might have are:
    - What browser should I use?
If you know anything about computers, you know that all browsers are only created to search for Google Chrome download. It works with all software, auto updates, and is very fast for the common people.
    -Why doesn't this link work?
Most people don't even realize that you do not need [https://www.] in a modern browser, or that you the URL bar can usually be used as a search engine. They are confused when their site doesn't pop up, and it is most likely because they don't notice the typo in the address bar.

  27. 1. I believe I knew most of the answers except for one that really caught my thought process when thinking about it. It asks “What do Viruses, Trojans, and Other Malware Actually Do?”. I found out that Viruses are programs that duplicate itself to infect a computer, also a trojan is what seems like a normal program but let’s another person control your computer and put more than just one little virus. They could put LOTS OF VIRUSES and probably kill your computer ;(.
    2. “Why is my computer so slow?!” Well miss/sir, (*silently says in mind* Your computers a dinosaur as you can see) Your computer seems to be slow by out of date components. I reccommend getting a new computer or upgrading your inside components to give it a boost in speed.

  28. 1. Something especially interesting that I learned was the facts about extending/depleting battery life. I have heard many theories about different ways that batteries work. The article discussed a lot of the ideas that I have been told and also disproved a lot of them. I learned a lot about Malware. I knew that names of many of the types and the basics of how they worked, but not how they spread or their origins. I did not realize how dangerous public WiFi is or how to best protect myself. I had knowledge of spam and how to avoid it. And I also knew to always eject USBs or else you would lose data due to the way files are stored on the USB. Finally, in all honesty, I had never really thought about the price of cables.
    2. “Why isn’t my app working?” - I would first tell them to open up their settings and ensure that they are connected to WiFi. My grandma has often asked me this question, and the answer is usually that they are not connected to a network that the app requires. If that does not fix the problem, I would then check for any updates for the app in the store because sometimes the older versions become outdated and cease to work properly.
“How do I get my pictures off my camera and onto my computer?” - I would check what kind of camera they have. Certain cameras use a cord to upload where others can upload directly from the SD card. If it requires a cord, I would explain to them how to connect it to the camera and then to a USB port on the computer. If it did not require a cord, I would tell them to open the battery cover and remove the SD card. Then find a card slot on their computer. Most laptops have them on the front part under the mouse pad. After the camera and computer are connected, I will tell them to open the camera in their computer (it should pop up when they plug it in). They should then copy the photos they want and paste them into a folder on their computer. Then they can delete the photos off their camera if they do not want them on there still.

  29. 1.) I feel like I had already known at least a small fraction about questions 10-8, maybe 6, and then probably 1. Although despite knowing a little in those questions that I mentioned above, I still learned a good amount of information from each of them, considering for 9 I only really knew the name and general idea of the virus type mentioned. On the fifth questions I didn’t know that the cables were that expensive to buy, although of course that would depend on the type of cord bought and what it was made out of.
2.) Q1: One question that comes up a little frequently at time is something like “why won’t Netflix work?”, to which the answer would be to see what is not working on it, and then depending on the problem, do something along the lines of uninstalling/reinstalling the Silverlight plugin and try from there.
Q2: How can I make this site/whatever go faster?
There are a number of reasons that a site might be slow. One suggestion would be to reduce the number of tabs that are currently open, and to keep as little other programs open on the device that would require wifi, as that would slow it down as well.

  30. 1. After reading the tech article I learned a lot of new things about technology, but I also know how to fix some of the problems they stated. Some of the problems I know was the batteries (10), the viruses and trojans (9), spam (7), and protecting my privacy (1). I learned that public wifi is not safe (8) and that almost anyone can look at its information. Another thing I learned was that you should eject your usb before taking it out (7) because you can lose its contents and I don't always do that. The last thing I learned was fix routers (3) with slow internet..

    2.
Question 1: How do I stop or make sure I have no viruses, malware, or trojans.
Answer 1: You can stop or make sure you have none by having an antivirus software. The one I would recommend and use is malwarebytes. All you have to do is run a scan every few weeks or months to find if you have any viruses, malware, or trojans.
Question 2: How can clear more space on my computer.
Answer 2: There are many ways of clearing space on a computer. One way is to delete things that you no longer need like a game, applications, or clear your downloads. If you need all your stuff, then I would recommend ccleaner as it cleans your computer of files you don’t need. If you still have no space then i would recommend buying a external hard drive to put your files in.

  31. Actually I learned quite a bit, I didnt knew about were 9). What do Viruses, Trojans, and Other Malware Actually Do?, 8). What’s Wrong with Using Public Wi-Fi?, 7). Do I Really Need to “Eject” USB Drives?, 5). Why Are Cables So Gosh Darn Expensive?, and 4). What Happens When a Site I Use Gets “Hacked?”; Other than that i knew all of them.

    Question I always get are:

Question 1) Why my PC is running slow?
Answer : It might be because of you have so many things running you PC, right click on Task Bar then go to click on Task manager and select things that are usless for a while and then click on End Task, that might be helpful.

Question 2). How do I compress my files?
Answer: Right click on the file that you wanna compress, then hover over Send to (Option) and then click on Compressed (zipped) Folder.

  32. 1. I knew most all of them except for 5. I've never really went out specifically to get any cables, but I have noticed that they are often expensive.

    2. "How do I change the background?" Depending on the device, you can change the background in the settings area. for a computer, you can either right-click the current desktop or go to settings at the home button.

"Why doesn't my keyboard or certain key work?" You probably have a sensor being unresponsive because of damage, or the cord connecting the actual keyboard and the computer has a fault. The easiest solution it to buy a whole new keyboard, or you can bring it to your local tech store to get it fixed.

  33. 1) I knew about how to make batteries last as long as possible, what different types of malware does, how to tell if an email is spam, that a cables price doesn't give it better quality, resetting a router, torrenting, and internet privacy. I didn't learn that much that I didn't know from the website, although I read a lot of things like this so I have already heard most of this information.

    2) Question 1: How do I make sure I don't get a virus on my computer?
Answer 1: You can very simply get an antivirus program that automatically makes sure you don't get a virus, or you can get a program like malwarebytes which, although it doesnt automatically scan, is one of the best programs to protect your computer against viruses.
Question 2: Why is my computer so slow?
Answer 2: Chances are, you have a virus. There are many services you can use to check for one, and possibly the best is Malwarebytes. If Malwarebytes doesn’t show your computer as having any virus, it could be a hardware or software issue.

  34. 1.I didn't know that you had to eject your USB drive I usually just take it out.Now I know how to keep my data safe when I take out the USB.I also didn't know that you could get caught downloading movies and such.I also didnt know that some time thew will punish you by slowing down your internet.I knew everything else though.
    2. One of the questions could probably be how much memory does my computer have.My awnser would be if you check the memory or setting you would be able to find out or even the box.
The second question could probably be like how do I store things in a file or maybe how do I upload pictures to my computer.my awnser would be just plug your phone in to the computer and it will give you and option and just download the videos or photos and name the file.

  35. 1. I knew most of them but one that I didn't know was the one about coords being expensive. I never knew that they were coated in gold and I thought that was pretty interesting. 2. Something I would ask is why were the cables coated in gold? I would answer it by saying that they were coated in gold because of how new the cables were back then and how much we wanted them to look good. Another question I would ask would be which is the better suggestion about usb ports, I would answer it by saying that usb ports could be used either way and its your preference.

    1. 2. Q. Why is my computer acting slower then usual.
      A. Most of the time the reason for a computer acting slow is because you either have a virus, or theres too much storage on your computer and theres too much files. You can fix these by either downloading an anti-virus software, or cleaning out your pc by deleting files you don't use anymore.
      Q. How can I upgrade my computer to make it go faster and work better.
      A. You can upgrade your computer by re-building it and adding better computer parts.

  36. 1. I knew most of the facts, but the battery facts were new.

    2. The first thing I would ask them before they told me what their problem was is whether they turned their device on and off first.

  42. 1) i know most of these questions like Why Do I Need to Keep Resetting My Router? its just common knowledge to me. The only one I didn't under stand is Will I Get Caught If I Download a Movie on BitTorrent? because I had no idea what BitTorrent was

  43. 1.) I learned a lot about technology after reading these articles but one thing that I had no idea about was Why Do I Need to Keep Resetting My Router? It is hard to keep a good signal every day all day at my house and I did not know that i could just reset the router to make it better.

2.) How can I use social media?
First you download the app that you want then you make a profile in the app and then all you need to do is find friends ang go from there.
Why is my phone dying so fast and running so slow?
All you need to do is completely exit your applications.

  45. 1. Like Chrissy Vaughan, most of these are common knowledge to me.
    2. I have heard almost every question possible from a "un-tech savy" person from the "where is the power button?" To the "I'm watching a movie and the colors come out green, can you fix it?" Or "the vacuum cleaner isn't working, what's wrong with it?". Reason I have heard these questions is because I have grandparents and they are up to date with everything tech but my uncle works 12 hrs everyday so when ever I am free they call me or they visit they ask, in the summer I'm stay with them and I help them, most of the time I don't know what the object is but I learn it then I show them how to use it. So now, they have a big screen tv with 2 computers and a touch screen phone :)

  46. 1) Only 10,7, and 3 really held new information for me. I have always been puzzled on why I needed to eject USB flash drives, reset my router, or how to keep a mobile device’s battery in good health. 4 and 2 also held some information that I was unaware of but it does not seem useful to me because I have never or ever plan to torrent property like those darn pirates ravaging the the 3 W’s of the World Wide Web and I have never been in a situation where a website that I regularly visit is hacked.
    2) Question 1: Why does my computer get gradually slower over time?
Answer 1: It is not necessarily any computer parts wearing down and getting slower but it is the software that makes the computer run that updates and gets more demanding on your computer’s resources as time goes on.
Question 2: Why are computers so gosh darn expensive?
Not only are you paying for the functionality of the computer when you buy one, but you are also paying for the materials that make up the components of a computer. Rare earth materials go into computer parts such as gold, copper, zinc, etc. If you are buying a store-bought computer you are also paying for the 100 dollar operating system.

  47. 1. Only 7 and 3. I always eject my USB anyway because I know it is important, but I never knew it was because the computer doesn't copy all the data over until you push the "eject" button. I also know that my router needs to be unplugged for a reason, I also knew that over heating is the main reason why you have to unplug your router. But I didn't know it could be caused just by having a crappy router. To be continued.

  48. 1) I already knew the answer to questions 9, 8, and 2. I learned about 9. in a project about viruses I did last year, 8 on the news, and 2 from a website where I found information about it. As for the rest I haven't really come across any related problems because I am not familiar with them.

    2) Two questions that I think un-tech savvy people would ask are "Why do I lose connection to my wifi?" and "Why is internet explorer always despised?" For the wifi one, you connection can drop from the radio signals of various different electronics in you home interfering with your wife signals, such as phones computers TVs, lights, or really anything that takes up power. You can solve this problem by changing you wifi channel or repositioning your router. As for the internet explorer one, it is because it is much slower, is more targeted by scams, viruses, etc., has more bugs, forces you to update flash(which is very buggy), and it also has buggy browser extensions/plugins.
