(S10) Virtual Reality

A Virtual Age

Virtual Reality has many uses and may become a major part of our society in the future? What do you think?

1. We looked at VR last year, but there have been many advancements.  And hey, we haven't said "Occulus Rift" in a while!  So, what did you find in the articles above?  What's cool today about this technology? Discover and share only one aspect that impressed you.  (No repeat ideas please)

2. Name a pro and con to this emerging technology.

3. What's the difference between VR, AR and IR?

  2. 1. In the fourth link I discovered the idea of “The Super Worker”, using virtual reality to assist you while you’re completing your task. Once VR advances severally, to remove motion sickness and other complications, than this technology will help advance us even further. Even something as simple as a HUD could be a massive help while you are working for your employer.

    2. A pro of VR would definitely have to be the potential to explore all sorts of fields, and still having the chance to use it for personal use, such as playing video games and watching movies allowing you to chance the point of view. A con would definitely be the current issue with VR such as head strain and motion sickness.

    3. VR is virtual reality, allowing you to view content as if it was in real time, as well as in real life, tracking your position and movement as you interact. Augmented reality (AR) is the idea of producing an object as if they were in real life, while they’re not really there. IR, or Infrared technology is a type of wireless communication between devices.

  3. 1. The concept was talked about in both the first and second links, but the ideas of what could be done in the film industry with the introduction of virtual reality. Think about it: a full, 360-degree view of what's happening in the movie. You can proceed along with the story and interact with the movie in a new and engaging way, or just take in the wonderful job that the designers did with their computer-generated environments and cinematography.

    2. Virtual reality is going to be a massive game-changer in all kinds of markets. One of the main pros is that of immersion; you can put on the goggles and equip whatever other peripherals you have, and be transported into an entirely new world. However, that can also turn out to be the technology's biggest con; if you get too absorbed into the world of whatever you're doing, you can quickly and easily become detached from the rest of the outside world, a digital hermit, if you will.

    3. VR is "virtual reality", a method for a person in the real world to interact with a virtual world using 1:1 scaled movements. AR is "augmented reality", a very different concept entirely; it blurs the lines of the physical and the virtual, allowing people to do things in the real world that translate onto a digital space (usually used for virtual treasure hunts). IR is "infrared", a wavelength of light that is just long enough to not be instantly perceived by the human eye, and is frequently used by a lot of virtual reality tech, and sometimes by augmented reality tech.

  4. 1. The use of Surgery training through virtual reality seems incredibly useful in training and priming new surgeons for the medical field. Making errors on the job in the medical field is life threatening. So using Virtual Reality to train is just so simple of a concept but makes such a huge impact in the field.

    2. Pro is obviously training and priming people into surgery. I can't exactly see a con in using that. Perhaps someone might feel more comfortable doing it in the virtual world that they'll mess up while operation on someone.

    3. Virtual reality or VR is just a world in the virtual plain that people interact with. Augmented Reality or AR is a blend of both virtual and real life. While Infrared is a wave length used in technology.

  5. 1. Business Teleportation is where you can have a conference or meeting without leaving your home. Through virtual reality, you can put yourself in the conference room and be able to see your coworkers and hear what's going on.

    2. I feel like virtual reality will open up whole new aspects of our lives that we could only imagine before. We can put ourselves in worlds that used to seem completely fictional and unreachable. However, I feel like we could easily lose ourselves in these worlds and be unable to come out, as in we don't want to come out.

    3. Virtual Reality is simulating being in the virtual world. Infinite Realities is literally putting yourself in the virtual world through scanning. Augmented Reality is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

  6. 1.) In the first link they are using virtual reality to step in someone else's shoes. Through this type of technology you can see what it is like to be the other person that you are doing an activity with.

2.) A pro for this type of technology is that things wont be self centered anymore and you can get a feel of someone else's perspective. On the other side a con is that as the producers said it is very laggy, which means that it may take a while to figure out the kinks in it.

3.) VR is a simulation of you being in a certain environment. AR is a real life setting controlled by computers behind it. IR is your actual self inside of a virtual world.

  7. 1. I found it really cool that virtual reality could allow the disabled to "live" again. With only an outlet, these disabled people could live in a different life- no disabilities, no misery, nothing. Everybody deserves to live a happy life.

    2. A pro of virtual technology is that it allows new doctors, pilots, etc., to practice their job skills, without putting themselves or anyone else in danger. However, one con is that virtual reality is currently being wasted on video games!

    3. The difference between virtual reality (VR), artificial reality (AR), and IR technology is that virtual reality does not have a physical form, artificial reality adds virtual objects to the real world (such as a Kinect), and IR technology is using telecommunications to gather and store information.

  8. 1. I like in the first link that the Occulus Rift help autistic children benefit from similar techniques as a virtual world gives them a time to pick up on social that may have been missed. Another thing I like is that the Oculus Rift its used by the UK company that simulate surgical procedures in the chaotic world of an active battlefield.

    2. Some pros are that the Oculus Rift is helps out the military people out in the battle field and also help autistic children if they miss something.

    3.

  9. 1.Virtual reality gives the ability to train people in a very unique way. They can fly a plane or preform surgery with no experience in either of those fields. It is also employed by the military in training exercises.
2.Pro would be hands on training without the repercussions of failure, being able to screw up and for it not to matter a bit
3.Virtual reality is putting on a mask and entering a different world. Augmented reality is like a hologram and putting an object as if it were in real life. Infrared tech is just wireless communication

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1.) One interesting thing would be the idea that NASA is using an Oculus Rift in order to control a robotic hand for space missions, and the fact that once that technology is refined enough, they can start using robots to man space stations.
2.) A pro of this would be that it would take less people in order to control things at space stations, and reduce and possible casualties that might very rarely occur there, although a con would be that the robots might not be the best thing to use in case of certain emergencies unless they are programmed with any and all possible circumstances before hand.
3.) VR would be computer simulated environments that simulate physical presences and can recreate each of the 5 senses. AR is a way of showing different views of reality, and allows things made by a computer to become interactable with things in the real world. IR is a type of tech that allows pretty much all of the different reality types of tech to be possible, because the IR can see the person’s movements easily and allow it to be used for the different techs to change things.

  11. 1. The upcoming advancements in virtual reality allow the user to travel the world from the comfort of their home. A majority of the world is unknown to the average individual, not everyone has the time or money to take month long trips to go see one part of the world only to return again after the excursion. Virtual reality headsets, such as the the Occulus Rift, fix this issue by giving anyone the ability to visit the locations in an almost first person experience. Aside from traveling the popular tourist locations, users would be able to explore areas that could prove too dangerous for the average human to survive in. Caves that could be filled with hazards, or the depths of the ocean, anything could prove to be accessible with this technology.

    2. Future possibilities using virtual reality technology could lead to the progression of more discoveries in the unknown, leading to more jobs for the majority of the population. Anyone would have access to explore the unknown, and could bring inspiration into the minds of the upcoming generation. While the effects brought from virtual reality may bring a large technological leap in progression throughout the world, it has many adverse effects that are brought along with it. People could become too attached to the devices, and could never want to leave the virtual worlds it presents. Examples of this can already be found in modern society, with many people becoming addicted to the ability to escape from the troubles of their lives and return to the ever expanding world of the internet. Virtual technology is an advancement and a setback, it all depends on how the user wishes to perceive it.

    3. The three main variations on the technology are all similar, but contain a vast amount of differences between them. Virtual reality enables the use to immerse themselves in digital worlds brought through the use of technology, but is limited by the lack of movement detection, and mainly offers vision through the device. Augmented reality offers the ability to bring the digital world directly into reality through the use of cameras and clever detection systems on devices. From the cameras input, the device will export an almost lifelike object or image onto its surroundings. This is mainly accomplished through the use of the devices screen, but can also be done through the use of lighting effects to bring an almost holographic image into the world. Infinite reality technology combines both virtual and augmented reality, bringing the most interactive and immersive experience to the user. The senses from the virtual world are given to the user, reflecting the use of virtual technology, while movement and input are captured directly from the user, allowing the interactive ability offered from augmented reality. Altogether, the three variations bring the most lifelike experience into the digital world.

  12. 1. What I found really interesting was the fact that one may explore other places with virtual reality. In real estate, clients may no longer need to visit houses that their agents have found for them- instead, it could be possible to simply put on a headset and explore the house that way.

    2. One definite benefit to virtual reality is the fact that humans can experience things in more than one dimension. Take video games. No longer are we limited to simply watching a screen and listening to the sounds of the game- it is now possible to become completely immersed in a life-like situation, or a fantastic dystopian world. That said, as programming becomes more and more advanced, there might be a time where humans have trouble distinguishing the real world from the virtual one. If this occurs, then the fabric of society could be at a real risk- interrogations could take place in virtual dungeons without the suspect actually becoming aware of this fact.

    3. VR stands for virtual reality. Virtual reality is a three-dimensional image that one may interact with in a seemingly real way, by the use of a special object, such as a glove or helmet. AR stands for augmented reality. Instead of creating an entire three-dimensional image, it simply overlays an image onto the existing reality- like a projector. Finally, IR stands for infrared. Infrared waves are emitted from heated objects, such as humans, and can be tracked with devices such as Kinects.

  14. 1. One of the possible uses that most interested me was about the Movies and Television because the thought of being in a Star Wars reality or a Lord of The Rings reality, both movies I loved as a child, would bring back some happy memories from my days as a sprout.

    2. The pros are: more realistic movies, a closer first person point of view, you can look at it like you are there. Cons are: you won't get up and go to the movies and get at least a little bit of a walk, it will probably be more expensive, in scary movies it could get WAY scarier, War movies could cause or make someone's PTSD worse which I speak from experience is a very bad thing.

    3. VR is virtual reality, allowing you to view content like it was in real time, as well as real life. Augmented reality, AR, is the idea of producing an object as if they were in real life, while they’re not really there. IR, or Infrared technology is a type of wireless communication between devices.

  15. 1. i found that Virtual reality is changing gaming, but systems like Oculus Rift, Project Morpheus, Google Cardboard and now Samsung Gear VR have huge potential beyond entertainment.

The big attraction of VR headsets is the ability to feel as if you are within a game’s environment, whether that’s exploring huge immersive worlds or executing swarms of nasties in all manner of cruel and interesting ways.

2.pro• VR is imaginably more personal than electronic mail or instant messaging, or even a letter or a telephone call. con-• an inescapable aspect of social life is the formation and maintenance of interpersonal relationships.

    3. AR is basically If you use your smartphone to film a sign right next to you, and have an app auto-translate the sign for you, replacing the text on the sign as you look at it in the viewfinder, you are really experiencing AR. VR on the other hand, can’t really be done with a smartphone. To achieve a virtually real experience, you’ll need to submerge much deeper into the new world presented. you’ll need a holohood that more or less completely shuts out the “original reality”. IR is inferred and the definition is Of or relating to electromagnetic radiation between microwaves and red visible light in the electromagnetic spectrum, having frequencies between 300 gigahertz and 400 terahertz and wavelengths between 1 millimeter and 750 nanometers.

Space exploration! That would be an amazing aspect to control robots or any kind of system aboard the ISS with a tool like the oculus rift.
    2. Name a pro and con to this emerging technology.
If it was integrated to everyday life to society I can see many communication issues between people in that future.
    3. What's the difference between VR, AR and IR?
AR is producing an object that doesn't exist irl as if it is irl. IR is emitted from objects, such as humans, and can be tracked with advanced devices.

    1. 1) Maybe even be using the Oculus rift to pilot unmanned space shuttles to take equipment from place to place. There are so many applications for this technology in space explorations IF there is necessary funding added to the equipment.
      2) People could be more retreated into their houses and avoid human contact if they can experience it in Augmented reality online and create their own world. Pro in the medical field would be that doctors can preform surgeries from across the planet via oculus rift connection and a robot with appropriate tools.

  17. 1.In the first link, I looked at all the other uses for VR then gaming. Before reading it I thot of VR as mostly just for gaming and the such, But the fact that it is being used for health care and movie production just to name a few, is really cool to think about. By the way I still think we should get an oculus rift for genyes, for you know, educational stuff.

2.Pros would be the fact it could provide some very realistic training to jobs like fire me and police workers. As well as it just being a huge step in future technology. The biggest con would be for it to blur the lines of reality too much and take over peoples lives.

    3. VR is virtual reality, Being able to react and see things in a program as if they were real. AR is augmented reality, it is the appearance change or augment of a real object throw a program. IR is infrared tech which is used a sensor for programs.

The Articles I looked at was the Six ways VR is changing the world. People could make films much better using VR to tell the producers and even film like that

    2. Name a pro and con to this emerging technology.
Pros are that people have more fun but at a very big con which is Money nothing is free
    3. What's the difference between VR, AR and IR?
VR would be computer simulated environments that simulate physical presences and can recreate each of the 5 senses. 19. 1. I learned that oculus rifts could potentially help autistic people in the future and could potentially help people with PTSD cope with what happens. The people in charge of the Oculus could make a situation where the person was and they could figure out why and what happened.

2.A pro to the technology is listed above with helping autistic and PTSD victims.

    3. AR is for more things like archicad and VR is for video games and is less realistic, because is does not have to be as realistic.

    1. 2. Cont. A con to VR technology is that it can easily disorient the player of the game.

      3. Cont. AR is very realistic. Could not find information about what IR is.

  20. 1. I find it cool how virtual reality can be used to help surgeons practice on fake people in a safer and realistic way. It's also cool how virtual reality can improve someones quality of life in many different ways, and this is helpful in many different situations. Virtual reality has really improved over the past three years and continues to be more useful as time goes on.

    2. A pro is that virtual reality can be used to help people gain skill in medical situations, and it is useful with many other medical situations as well. A con is that certain people could have certain sickness like motion sickness and that can give people major headaches or other issues.

    3. VR is where people can use their normal motions on a computer simulated program. AR is where things are direct or indirect view of the physical world, and the elements around them are generated my a computer or something similar to that. IR lets you see someones movements and can show you all reality's and make them possible through your own mind.

  21. 1.) The first linked showed me all the other stuff besides gaming that VR can and is being used for. I like how it is being used for healthcare to help train for surgeries, help autistic kids, and people with post-traumatic stress disorder.

2.) A pro to this technology is that it can help with scientific advances, healthcare, and the gaming business. A con is the possible physiological effects of being in a VR for too long.

3.) VR is a computer generated world that appeals to the physical sense. AR is makes things that can be interacted with things in the real world. IR is used as sensors and is emitted by all warm things.

    1. 2.) Another pro of VR is the ability to train surgeons, tattoo artist, mechanic, or any profession that requires you to use your hands. This can lead to a lot of better things and it can go towards experience in that field so they can just jump into that particular job.

  22. 1. VR is a very cool concept considering the technological experiences that you can have. this makes your be able to feel as if your are in a game environment that you are playing. Something else that is awesome is that this could change video watching, from movies to shows to simple YouTube videos.

    2. A pro would be the amount of accessibility you could have with what you are playing or watching, this could change the whole work experience A con would be is whether it is possible for someone to suffer an injury or mental distress as a result of a violent action carried out in a virtual environment.

    3. Vr is a computer generator that portrays something as 3d so we can experience it. IR makes your be able to see heat through dark or fuzzy environments. AR is a technology that changes a way a person would look at something in 3d.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1.) I haven't experienced the Oculus Rift myself...but I know from watching people that it seems extremely real to them, especially the second generation of Oculus Rift, which features 1080p quality and head tracking. I hope the Oculus rift 3rd gen features some sort of suit or something.

2.) A pro would be that technology would have extreme immersion within playing games and giving gameplay a whole new perspective we've all been wanting since we've first heard about video games and wishing to be inside of one. The future is NOOOWWW!!!!

3.) VR is Virtual Reality, which gives the perspective of the player and makes your brain think you're actually inside of the game. AR is Augmented Reality, which touches on the monitors and phones for gaming on a screen. Finally, IR is Infrared Technology and is used to make sensors.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1.) I really enjoyed how people are beginning to use VR for things like surgery and help surgeons practice without it being life threatening. I feel that as VR becomes more and more used, it will continue to improve and society will begin to adopt it more.

2.) One "pro" to Virtual Reality is that we can use it to explore unknown areas and get to experience things without being stuck in them. I feel like it can do nothing but advance all the fields it gets implanted into. There still are "cons", because nothing is quite like experiencing something first hand, but some people may feel left out as they cannot participate due to medical conditions.

3.) Virtual Reality is a program or set of programs that use sensors and cameras to bring the actions you do in real life into the game or simulation you are in. Once it has done that it uses tactile feedback with things like pressure pads and video screens to relay the video. This allows someone to feel immersed or in a false sense of reality.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. I like the idea of Robotic arms being controlled remotely by someone using the Oculus Rift or another type of VR device. The first link led me to NASA's idea of the robot arm.

    2. The pro to this type of technology allows us to preform tasks that could possibly be restricted otherwise. The con to it would be how costly it is to manufacture the technology in bulk.

3 VR is Virtual Reality as in immersive realities that are similar to real life. AR is Augmented Reality as in cell phones and mobile devices. IR is infrared tech that is used for wireless communications

  26. 1. One of the coolest ideas that I came across was the body hacks for a virtual reality helmet. It's an idea that allows people to step inside the shoes of another person by seeing through their eyes. The person looking through puts on a helmet/ eye glasses, and the person in action has a camera type device worn on. It's not exactly clear if it's looking through someone's actual eyes, like their everyday lives, or if it's more like a movie, watching through the eyes of an actor. The little video included in the Body Hacks section of the first link is a little strange. At times it shows people just walking around, eating fast-food, but other times, it shows off looking through the eyes of a spy killing someone.

    2. I think it’s a really cool idea to have a virtual world, that way we can simulate things that we would normally be harmed in doing in reality. Some things, like creating war scenarios for veterans with PTSD, are a really great way to help people relieve moments. They can use something like virtual reality to simulate surgeries before the actual operation. It’s great to be able to have a fake-real world this way we can avoid tragedies.

    3. The difference between VR, AR, and IR are very subtle, just adding more things upon the other. VR, or Virtual Reality, is best explained by the Oculus Rift. Virtual Reality creates a fake world around the person and they can interact with it in some way. AR, or Augmented Reality is where the real world is used, but hologram like visuals appear and can be modified. The last one, IR, is the use of body movements to be able to interact with a virtual world, with a huge example being the XBox Kinect.

  28. 1) Virtual reality has a lot of good uses in the world today. It can be used to help train better surgeons by giving them more practice. This can also help train people in the workforce. Also pilots and astronauts can practice flying in a virtual world.

    2) A pro about virtual reality is that people can experience things in different ways. It can also help people experience new things. A con about virtual reality is that some people could react to it differently. Some people could experience migranes and become confused between real life and virtual life.

    3) Virtual reality is a virtual world that has been created by a computer. Augmented Reality interacts with computers and other devices to produce a world in which you have more control. IR is infrared technology that interacts with the real world such as sensors and things that track movement.

  29. .1. VR has many good uses that can help advance all of our lives to another level. It allows us to train people more which could help us in certain areas like medical field.
    2. VR can really change our lives a pro can be an average citizen can experience things they could not experience in the real world. A con could be that many people can become addicted and simply lose themselves within the virtual world.
3.VR was made by a computer. AR interacts with technology devices to create a world where you have the control. IR is infrared technology.

  31. 1.) One cool thing that I read is that virtual reality could be used a simulations to help surgeons or pilots learn new skills.

2.) VR is great for many things, but there are still pros and cons about it. Pros would be: Game immersion, possible therapy purposes (for ptsd), the simulations I mentioned earlier, and watching films. Some cons would be: motion sickness and eye strain.

3.) VR is a fake world made by a computer. AR is like the enhancement of someone perception of the real world, like using a smartphone camera a letting a computer fill in the real world with (fake) objects. IR is infared technology, it shows a new spectrum of radiated light that basically comes from heat.

  32. 1. Virtual reality has something to offer to anyone that uses it. Wether your a gamer or a doctor or even a pilot in training VR can help with it all.

2.One of the cons of virtual realality is that you cant really experince something with your whole body, we havent reached that far as of yet. Pro: it allows surgeons to hone there skills without harming any real patients in the process, it also allows gamers to see a gaming world in a different perspective.

3.Virtual reallality is something that is made and controlled a computer that the person uses. Augmented reality is some made with the help of devices and sensors were the person has complete control. Inferred technology uses radiated light to create spectrums after which one can observe these spectrums.

  33. 1) Virtual Reality is a new thing for me. I have never heard of a Occulus Rift So yeah, I am kinda in the dust when it comes to this VR stuff. I after looking at the first and second link was drawn most to the NASA aspect. It amazing to think about the possibilities with space and being able to experience literal out of this world stuff. The life hacks as well. I really enjoy the idea of this technology helping people. I want to be a special education teacher so opening the possibilities for disabled people really makes me want this tech to work.
    2) There are obviously many pros to this growing technology. I think the man pro though would be doctors or scientist being able to expand our knowledge in anyway. A con could be giving someone with bad intentions this amazing technology, to cause havoc. Anyone can cause issues with tech.
    3) Virtual Reality is different from them because it controls your perception on things. Causing you to have a sensation that the other two cant. It has many more opportunities as well. IT causes you to see spectrums. AR helps other tech, sense you.
