1.  In your own words, what did you discover about this organization?  What seems to be their philosophy? Goals? Projects? Are they successful? What is your opinion of what they are attempting to do?  Research all the tabs and get a real sense of this company.

2.  Pick a game to play.  Check first that no one before your blog post has chosen it.  There are 135 games.  (If you replicate a previous choice you won't receive credit for this question!)  Play the game all the way through until you feel you've accomplished all you can.  Evaluate the quality of the game and what you learned.

  1. 1.) Games For Change (gfc) is a bunch of games that are meant to be social, enjoyable, and educational. What is the public saying about it? They say “At least two generations of people have grown up with games and … it is part of their DNA to want to express themselves in that form. The bandwidth [of video game emotion] is usually tension and competition—a sense of aggression. That’s changing.” Their philosophy or mission, is the socially impact people through digital internet games. One game they made called "Half The Sky" is about turning oppression into opportunity's for woman worldwide. they've recently received 1,000,000 players and over 400,00 dollars in donations for this game. They are very successful in that they are just making internet games.I feel that several other people have tried to do what they are doing, making people feel social for playing a game, dont get me wrong, its a great idea, but they will probably fail with what they are trying to do.

2.)For this, i chose "plague inc.". Plague Inc. is an eerie pathogen simulator that lets you become a deadly disease set out to infect everyone on earth. Players start off by picking a country, trying to evolve their pathogen from a nonlethal disease into a highly infectious epidemic capable of ending life as we know it. Players earn DNA points by infecting more countries, which they can use to add certain attributes to their pathogen. Plague Inc. highlights the different ways that diseases can spread depending on environmental factors and specific countries’ economic status. I learned that even something so small can cause a plague this big. Quality- look like they worked hard on this one.

  4. 1. Games for Change facilitates the creation and distribution of social impact games that serve as critical tools in humanitarian and educational efforts. This site contains a ton of games, hoping that people will play them. The way in which the games are designed, they are meant to positively benefit the society. It is supports to help out and inform about community issues and how to fix them. In my opinion, they are very successful and they are doing a very good thing for anyone who would like to be taught a few things about problem-solving and educational purposes. They receive an amazing amount of donations. It's a good idea, but I highly doubt they will get any more successful than they already are. Personally, I would not play this in my spare time.
    2. 4/10 It's a game about educating teachers on how to treat students with certain problems. You have to recommend to a counselor who needs help. This is a really crazy game. It was meant to be educational, and for that I respect it. It is meant for teachers, so I am simply the wrong audience.

I'm going to experiment with a few other games, that seem more popular and enjoyable. All in all, great site with great games, but I don't think we are the right audience, thus the games aren't as enjoyable as they could be.

  5. 1. Games For Change is an organization that makes and collects games that show social problems and dangers. The games are supposed to be fun, understandable, and educational. They have a philosophy that games can change someones view on something and help change (games for "change") that problem or danger. The public says that a ton of people have played with and grew up with games. This makes people feel more for games and maybe understand them more. Their goal is to impact people in a way to make the world a better and more friendly place. I think what they are attempting to do is good, but not everyone plays video games and most gamers play big games like Smite, LoL, CoD, BF, GTA, and other big popular games out there. With all those amazing and addicting games, they probably wouldn't go on a site like this to find a game to play when they have those other amazing games. For that reason, I don't think they will be very successful and impacting.

2.I play LIM. This game was supposed to show how blending in with the crowd is more dangerous than just being yourself. It is a simple game. You are a block that keeps changing colors and you have to navigate through a maze. In the maze, there are other single-colored blocks that try to get in your way or beat you up (bullies). You can try to sneak by but you start to be unable to hold it in and you burst into yourself while next to the other blocks, making it near impossible to make it to the end. I encountered many glitches such as me fazing through the walls and not being able to make it back inside (maybe this is intended and is supposed to show how you feel shoved away from everything else?). This game was very quickly made and not very fun unless you like to be mad or want to gain stress. I rate it 4/10

  6. Games for Change is an organization focusing on entertaining as well as interactive gaming while being very educational. They realize as the times change, students are not learning as well solely from text books. These games quickly grasp the focus of the student's brain, making learning an enjoyable experience as well as much more efficient than traditional means. They appear to be very successful in this approach, as they have been featured in the press such as "The New Yorker," "The Guardian," and even "USA Today."

The game I tried out from thus site was "Quandary." Quandary, the word, simply means being uncertain of what to do in a given situation, which is exactly what the game revolves around. Going through the game, you get to know a few members of this tribe taking place off earth. The game introduces a main conflict, and then the townspeople's opinions are revealed one by one on the matter. They state facts, solutions, and other opinions. After sorting the comments into these categories, the top two solutions are picked and evaluated. Then, you pick which solution you think works best for the tribe. The "council," like the government from Earth, reviews the decision as well as the people's opinions on the idea, and comes up with an idea of their own. You then predict who will agree and who will disagree. In the end, it shows the new technique implemented and everyone living happy. From this game, decision making, careful reading, consideration of other people and even social skills can be absorbed. It is not a game I would play for fun on a Saturday, but as far as education goes it is an intriguing and a lot can be learned from it.

  7. 1. I discovered a lot about this organization. Their Mission? "Catalyzing Social Impact Through Digital Games". Unlike the commercial gaming industry, they want to have entertainment and engagement for social good. Games for Change convenes multiple stakeholders, highlights practices, incubates games, and helps create and direct investment into new projects.

2.I chose the game Uplifted and I played it on the Ipad. It is a cute little puzzle game which can be addicting. In the land of Happ, everything was fine until the Viroids showed up. The Viroids destroyed the land and deprived them of their joy. In an attempt to right these wrongs, one member of the Happ, controlled by the player, sets off on a perilous journey across 20 challenging levels to make things right. Uplifted aims to help players recover some of their own happiness as well. At the end of each level, the game asks the player three questions about their happiness. It helps players understand themselves and the game gets to know the player better. It shows that even simple games can be your best friend.

    2. The game I chose was Mission. Mission is a game about the 4 stories of 4 different homeless men that were helped very significantly by The Ottawa Mission those 4 mens names were Andre who was born in Panama in 1964 and came to America to start fresh. Jean who was born in Africa in 1954 and wanted to be a Biochemist but was unhealthy and the Ottawa Mission helped him acheive his goal.Gordon who was born in British Columbia and worked at Mcdonalds for 15 years and Roger who faced challenges throughout his life such as beginning high school at the age of 12, buying his sister a house and overcoming addiction after 33 years. The Ottawa Mission has helped these 4 people hugely and helps those in need that do not have the necessary resources to help themselves. In 2011 The Ottawa Mission helped 7,100 homeless people and gave them many opportunities to succed

  9. 1. Games for Change is a nonprofit organization that promotes games that have some sort of social relevance or impact. Their philosophy is that if these games hit the mainstream, then huge social changes can take place, and that the games might even educate their audiences.

    2. The game is for windows, so I'm going to switch it over to that right now so as not to lose my answer for number 1, will reply with the answer to 2

    1. I played the game Cart Life, a game that has the black and white pixel graphics of a Game Boy. The character that i played (of two available at the beginning) was Andrus, a Ukrainian immigrant who comes here to work at a newspaper stand that he purchases in the beginning. When working at the newspaper stand, you have to make sales and when you do that you have to make change with little to no direction on how to do that. The graphics make it a little bit difficult to tell what you need to do on your first sale, and when i did my first sale, I lost the customer because I took too long. The game is pretty cool, the music is just my style, and the graphics really suit it well. The game teaches the user to make change under a time limit. Overall, a pretty cool game, not one I would play for fun or in my leisure time, but it was alright.

  10. 1) Games for Change is an organization that appears to have all people find new games. Games with meaning and story, ones with symbolism. Not blood and shooting and stealing cars. They want gamers and computer interneters to get along and join alike. To realize that there's more than that and connect with one another through games.

    2) The game that i "reviewed" is The Cuckoos of Computers. It's a game. A game about the fears of sitting in front of a computer if you've never done it before. SOUND FAMILIAR?! (that's me) It's a game that takes about 2 minutes to get through, since it's like little mario party esque mini-games that teach you how to use the mouse and keyboard.

  11. 1) Games for Change is an organization, founded in 2004, that works for the distinct purpose of distributing and creating educational games for schools as well as for social purposes, such as sending a message.

    2) I played Energyville, by Chevron, and it taught me about all of the different types of energy a city has to create as well as consume, such as nuclear plants, solar plants, as well as providing energy to thing such as oil refineries. The game was pretty cool and it had an impressive art, but it was mostly just text, and something I could have just gotten out of a a textbook if I wanted to. Other than that, it was a pretty cool semi-simulation, and I would recommend taking a look to any class it could apply to.

  12. 1 "Catalyzing Social Impact Through Digital Games" this is what games for change wants to accomplish in a nut shell. they are trying to take a more direct approach to enriching many peoples lives and games are the way to do it. they want to touch many peoples lives and i agree with there motives of connecting to these people. Games are very personal things but i believe that this isnt the right approach if you want someone to take away knowledge from a topic it should be direct and to the point

    2. the game i chose was WAY it is a 2d plat-former that pairs you with a random player from across the world, you start out navigation g the world alone but as you progress you find the other player and you must learn to communicate none verbally using gestures and expressions to help solve a set of puzzles

  13. 1.) This organization is all about educational games and building a successful environment for them. There philosophy is that gaming is not a bad thing, but when you combine that with educational gaming you get a whole new concept. Founded in 2004 games for change is a unique organization that wants to socialize gaming for entertainment and for the general populace. There games are teaching kids and adults information that they didn't know before through entertaining educational games. Some games teach kids about being autistic and provides the empathy towards them.
2.) I picked catchment detox and in this game I learned how hard it is too actually manage an environment. I would give this game a 10 out of 10 because it teaches kids how to manage life. You start with 100000 dollars and a big land scape with plenty of water. There are 1000 inhibitors on this land and you are given the task of managing the land. You can change the water conserving level and what is being built. Also you can manage the nature. This game will teach kids hoe hard life actually is and it will help kids realize life is harder than they think.

    2. I chose Akrasia, This game was very good 8/10 It is based on the abstract concept of addiction, which is expressed metaphorically throughout the game. My problem with it is that it was to short and easy to figure out after a couple of tries. This game reminded me of Ib, Ib is a very good game, I love so much, good story and really attached to the characters in it, mostly Mary and Ib. Both Akrasia and Ib are alike due to that the ending of the game depends on how you play the game. And it made me actually want to read about the games, Akrasia is like I said about addiction and that it can kill you in the end. And I know so much about Ib that i'm pro at it, know most meanings, endings and extras in game. but I really loved how the game play of Akrasia reminded me of Ib in a way. Best Blog Ever, Ib & Mary FOREVER!

  15. 1. Games for change facilitates an accessible way to learn about humanity and real world issues that young people will face later in their lives living on our planet. The organization is one to see children as our most precious resource, and they want them to be taught these lessons early on. The organizations main goal is to use income from their contribution to the world to help others, and ultimately give their money away to help others in a myriad of ways. For example, they invest their money to give to new projects that help the worlds well being in other ways.

    2. The game I played is called Thirst. It was created in 48 hours during the 2013 game jam, and its underlying theme is not immediately apparent. It is meant to illustrate the effect of a lack of water in third world countries. The game uses a charming and simple style to hide how truly horrible the point of the game is. Basically, when one person fails to cross the desert, the next will take what resources they can from the latter, but still fails to accomplish anything. Even with all the resources they pick up, they only make it so much farther. This is a perfect illustration of the problems that plague other countries that can't come across enough stuff to survive on. Without the things they need to survive, how are they supposed to thrive like other economies while they have nothing to SURVIVE off of. It is truly a sad thing, and the game sheds light on the fact that we need to help, or nothing will ever get better over there.

  16. the organization is geared toward teaching kids using video games and also showing teachers and parents that some games can be educational.

2)___________________________________ the game i played was data dealer and i was about an underground system of networks that was hacking profiles of people and your thumbs down meter cant get to high or you'll bust and be turned in. Yes some people might say that it promotes hacking profiles some might say yes others no just your personal take, this game was also listed under 14. so you basically trie to hack as many profiles as you can and you start out with a set amount of money and then try to hack as many profiles as you can

  17. 1.This organization is using games to help teach, work out, and make us better well rounded people. it is awesome and beautiful what they are doing. It is organizations like this that change the world.

2.The game I played was Zombies RUN! my bro had it on his ipod touch anyway so i asked if i could borrow it. With no GPS in the ipod i used a treadmill and there are towns and other people that just add to the game it really makes you want to run when there are zombies or stealer behind you. all together i think it gets a 8/10. It is really fun and I'm not sure I will give the ipod back.

  18. 1. The games for change organization is creating games to help teach kids that there aren't just games that have violence that are fun too. I believe this site will help today's generation to not be as violent from the games people make today.

    2. The game that I played was Re-Mission 2. This game is about killing bacteria and making sure you don't get sick. Or get a disease and die. You could probably get it on the app store on an ipod, phone, or computer. I think overall this game to me is a 9/10.

  19. 1. Their Mission is catalyzing social impact through digital games. I found that they design games for educational results. The Half the sky project is a mobile device and facebook game that was developed by NGO, Top Facebook developers, and the games for change executive. This game immersed players into a virtual world were their in-game actions affect real-world donations. They were very succesful with the Half the sky project. The game has more than 1 million players who have contributed over $411,000 in direct and sponsored donations. Due to all of the success and positive goals, I think what the Games for Change company is doing is a fabulous idea. As long as I the games have some fun to them.

    2. The game that I played was Stop Disasters. It was a very interesting game, you would fortify homes and prepare towns for natural disasters. The game was very well set up and easy to use, and quite fun. I learned that disasters cause millions of dollars of damage to culture, life style and memories to cities. I think it was a positive experience, aside from all the destruction.

  20. 1. G4C (Games For Change) is an organization that wants the world to be a better place through the use of gaming. The have festivals all over the world for game creators and people to meet up and inspire change in the world. Organizations and charities all over the world can enter games to their websites to help earn money and awareness for their cause. G4C has been wildly successful in helping to create a better world to live in, all with the use of the digital one.
    2. I played the game Darfur is Dying, which is an eye opening look into the genocide that is taking place in Darfur. The game's goal is to raise awareness about the 2.5 million refugees who live in the Darfur region of Sudan. This game was created by students at the University of Southern California who won the mtvU’s Darfur Digital Activist contest with this prototype. This game is very educational to help you learn more about the struggle the people go through in Sudan and also instructs you on ways you can help.

  21. 1.) Games For Change is a non profit organization that was found in 2004 that helps creating and distributing social impacts of games that are critical tools in certain ways, such as education. Games For Change uses entertainment for social good.

2.) The game i played was called The Riverbed: An Eco Noir Mystery, and it was about a fictional murder mystery that took place in a land that was having a very bad water shortage. Much of the elements of the game, such as the water shortage, setting, and characters, were based on real world cases. The game was fun and the controls were limited to point and click much like a game called Scratches and the game had a small amount of creepiness in it because of some parts (such as going in a cave like area and seeing blinking red eyes) and it had a few puzzles which required certain items (flashlight to go in a dark room, crowbar to open a locked door, etc.). The game shows players the crises of water shortage and helps them better understand situations like this.

  22. 1. This organization makes educational games that are for all ages. This company's philosophy is that games are able to make a difference in the world. Their goal is to change the world for the better using the power of video games. Having already 1 million players, this company is looking very successful in terms of a player base. Games for Change are trying to enlighten us to real world problems using the power of video games.

    2. The game I chose was Vigilance. The game has you being an overseer of a city to make sure everything is perfect. This game, however, goes all the way, using real life situations that you have to detect and stop. For example; littering, theft, jay walking, drugs, alcohol, prostitution, public masturbation, and the list goes on. At first I thought this game was just for laughs. Then I realized, most of the problems happening in game, happen just as frequently in real life. It really opened my eyes when I had the epiphany and for that, this game gets a 10/10 in my book.

  23. 1. Games for change is an organization that seeks to showcase awesome games that can teach people valuable skills, and benefit their education through playing fun games. This style of learning works well because it can be so entertaining that you forget its educational. Games for change is also expanding not just a website, but as chapters in largely populated places around the world.

    2. The game I played was the Republia Times. This game takes place in a heavily government controlled country that hires you as a part of the local news printing corporation. You have to print articles about varying subjects to bring in more readers and to please you government. After all they hold you family in a "safe location" while you carry out your duty. During the game a group of rebels asks for your assistance in the war by printing negative government articles. I think this game was actually really fun. I also learned about how media has such a large impact in society.

  24. 1.) Games for change is a non profit organization founded in 2004. They focus mainly on teaching real world problems and educating people via games. I believe that what they are doing is very good considering half of there games really do teach and educate you on real world problems.

2.) The game i chose to play was Enercities. Enercities focuses on showing you how a city relies on many benefactors such as energy, happiness and so on. The game is basically a version of sims where you build your city to try to get to 500 populatin or level 5 before the date reaches 2110.

  25. 1.) What i have discovered about this website that it is a site that it is a site that has however that visits it to play educational gaming and the games that they give you don't even feel like educational gaming because you are having so much fun while playing them but you are learning at the same time.

2.) The game that I played was international racing squirrels and what i have learned from it is life skills. In that game you gain nuts to buy squirrels (you need to feed them some how) and you train them to be able to win there races and you are able to buy power ups for your squirrels to pull ahead.

  26. 1: Games for Change is a company that seems to be attempting to take everyday gaming technology and create simulations with it that help to spread certain knowledge about problems and disabilities of the modern world. They seem to be doing successful, and have a very wide variety of games already, each one a new and unique experience that is used to convey a message to the player.

2: I chose the game BlindSide, a horror simulation in which you are completely blind and play through deadly scenarios using only your sense of sound. This game allowed me to look through the eyes (no pun intended) of a blind person in a way that was previously impossible, providing a new outlook of the matter. While the game was short, it was fun and engaging.

  27. 1. I discovered that this organization, Games for Change, makes games to show younger people social impacts like depression, homelessness, etc. They seem to want to get those younger people and entertain them, but also teach them something about the social problems we have. Their goals seem to be to maybe prepare the player for what life is like and explain why this happens. Their projects, the games, are pretty engaging to me and really taught me something, Concluding that it seems very successful.

    2. I played a game called Spent which simulated what it was like to become almost homeless with only a small amount of money. During this game you are faced with hard choices that you will not want to even make in the game. I felt like I was really the character in the game that you are and feeling the pressure of having no money to live off of. This game was a well thought out game and even though it was depressing I enjoyed playing it and learning what its like for some people out there. I believe it really got the point across about how hard it is to be homeless and what it does to you. I believe it is very successful at teaching what life is really like now.

  28. 1) This program is focused on educational gaming. they believe in uses games to help solve problems some people have after school such as how they handle their money, how to use their brain in order to solve a faced paced problem.

    2) the game i played was called stop disasters. it is a game in which you build defenses and houses that can be modified to withstand a certain disaster (that you choose). and you only have so much money and time, you can make evac. plans and practice them, you can build sand dunes and wave breaks (for tsunamis) and use your time and money wisely to save as many people/buildings as possible.

  29. 1. Games For Change (G4C) is an organization that gathers games from the internet that they believe have educational purpose to them and can teach children things through entertaining games rather than boring textbooks. They are very successful in their mission as children can become much more invested in a game than any textbook or worksheet.

    2. For this assignment, I chose to play Sweatshop by Littleloud. This game places you in the position of an employee Manager in a sweatshop that produces knock-off brand items in a third-world country. While managing the sweatshop's employees you are required to produce as many goods as possible with the allotted amount of time. You were required to keep the workers from dying but if a worker did die, you were barely penalized and only a fraction was removed from your overall score showing that corporations employing sweatshops care much more about supply of items then the lives of employees. After each level was completed, an interesting fact would be given to you about the state of sweatshops. The game was overall well designed and got its message across very well. My only wish is that the cutscenes weren't so long.

  30. 1.) Games for Change is a program that started in 2004 to promote games that can be educational and/or use critical skills. Their goal is to have a program where kids and even adults can play games that are not only fun but engage the player socially. I find that this project is very successful. The people involved are very committed to their job, to make sure everyone playing is having a good time while also having the opportunity to learn. But due to what people play today, this project has a high chance of failing. It's a great idea, but there is room for people to be uninterested.
2.) The game I chose was The Curfew. It is a mystery game set in the future where the government has issued a new program called The Curfew, where if you're out for too long and/or too late, you will basically get hunted down. The object of the game is to gain the trust of four other people in the safe house with you and choose one of them at he end (no spoilers!). You're essentially the people who are revolting against the government. It is a very fun game, if you like to make decisions all the time! Those decisions can change the outcome of your game, and it isn't always obvious what you have to do. They is one drawback of it though; the game is a little tedious, but that's my opinion.

  31. 1. Games for Change is an organization that implements valuable education into gaming. Their philosophy is education gain through fun, modern computing activities. Their goals are to establish a well build platform of games that are education based to help students succeed. Right now, they display thousands of games that impact the world positively, including myself. I believe the modern world is evolving into a digital age, and the only way to keep education in the loop is incorporating it into games.

    2. I played NarcoGuerra, which puts the War on Drugs into your hands. From this game, I learned so much more. The facts and methods we could use in real life are found in this game. It relates to education because I learned the serious case in which drugs affect the society and how we can stop it today and in the future. The game had a few bugs itself, but the content was great and accurate; I support it.

  32. 1. Games for change is a organization that is dedicated to using games for social change. Its game are considered serious games focused on social issues in the world and its games are focused on education gain for fun. I think in this modern time were kids are focused are games and less on what is happening in the world right now I think this is a good idea and should be continued.

    2. The game i played was Code Fred: Survival mode this game focuses on the body's survival systems like during the first part you have to deliver adrenalin to the important organs so you don't get caught by wolves. then you also have to expel viruses from taking over your system. It wasn't easy at some point but all in all it was a very educational game and I enjoyed it.

  33. 1.) Games for change is a non profit organization that is trying to change the impact games have on society. They try to do this by making and collecting fun educational games. They notice that kids just don't learn as well from a text book anymore so they try to make education fun. The games on there website teach you about the dangers of the world and general education. with big gaming companies in the world most gamers wont visit this site. they make an impact but not a very big one.

2.) I played a game called lim. The quality was decent but it wasn't very educational. the objective was to get a square to the end of the level trying to avoid other squares. It wasn't very fun or educational.
