2. Website Design

This week as you create (or improve) your portfolio websites, spend some time and consider the design elements.

Many of these sites linked below are made with flash, Photoshop or other sophisticated software, but you can replicate many of the design ideas and layout using google (pvlearners) sites.

The idea here is to spark more creativity into your sites!

1. Evaluate the design in some of the worst websites.  Pick one and describe why you think it's awful.  Did you find any in their list you actually liked?  Yikes!

2. Take a look at some award winning websites.  Really look around!  Pick one or two sites and describe why you like it and if (or how) you might integrate some of the ideas you saw into your site.
     Very Nice Sites

3.  What do you want your site to say about you?

PLEASE NUMBER each of your responses in your comments.  Don't forget to login using your pvlearners account.

  1. 1. Lings's Cars seemed to be the worst in my eyes, information and graphics are spread out everywhere and it just looks terrible. First look gave me a headache, and I just wanted to die. The Ron Oslund's Website had the least amount of strain on my eyes.
    2. The MIXD (http://www.mixd.co.uk/) website was absolutely beautiful. The coder was truely an artist. The simplicity, user interface, and experiance is awesome.
    3. Personally, I want my website to make the user feel comforable and wanting to continue through the site. In other words, I want it to be interesting, simple, and not give the user an instant headache.

  2. 1. The afterlife site seemed to be non informative and hard to navigate site that is very uncomfortable for me to look at.
    2. The Cellar Heat site was very informative and organized. It was comfortably formated to be easy to navigate for people not used to technology.
    3. I want my website to be as simple as possible for the viewer and hopefully it will make them comfortable. It will be easy to navigate and professional.

  3. 1-Id say out of the top ten worst sites, my least favorite was the unorganized blob that was Arngren.net. And as for my favorite of the 10 worst ones was designs 23, it really was not all that bad, it was just really bland. But other than that the set up and organization seemed fine.
2- One site that i really liked was http://adaptd.com/ due to its really flashy nature and color schemes. From reviewing the site i really like their tabs as well as their organization. The second one that i found really cool looking was the http://retinart.net/graphic-design/50remakes-ag/ The qhole set up and design really caught my eye and was fun to browse though.
3-I honestly just dont want to end up on either one of these site, but ending up on the best sites would be cool, but im nowhere near the quality of these other sites.

  4. 1. The Afterlife is the absolute worst website in my opinion. It showed no purpose whatsoever and you would have no reason to be on the site in the first place! There isn't even anything interactive about the website, like a flash game or something that follows your mouse, it's just wallpaper. Each website got worse and worse, none of them were good.

    2. The best website I saw on there was the Hanger, the website looked absolutely beautiful. At first I thought the website showed no purpose, but then upon closer inspection, I found out it was a very professional site with videos and pictures of their work. I would definitely want the moving background to be on my website.

    3. I want my sight to show that I am a very fun and light hearted person.

  5. 1. The worst website to me is Ling's Cars I couldn't read it because I kept getting distracted by the overproduction of adds.
    2. The best website to me is Alma Latina. Its organized, nice template, and it makes it feel like everything fits together
    3. I would like my site make me look organized, professional , but still show that I'm a funny guy and I'm fun to be around.

  6. 1. Arngren looks the worst to me. There is way too much stuff to even look at. It hurts my eyes. The things they are selling are completely random. They're vehicles, RC toys, Backpacks, Bicycles, airplanes, and Star Wars crap. There is just too much stuff going on.
    2. A lot of these Websites are super simple, easy to understand, and to read. Oil Lisher has a nice look and feel to it. It has simple visuals, gets straight to the point, and isn't super cluttered with crap.
    3. I would want my website to be exactly what the person needs. Easy to read, my skills, and straight to the point. I don't want it to be super cluttered or hard to understand or uninteresting.

  7. 1. I really dislike The Afterlife. It is horribly designed. I have no idea where text could be put. Entirely unorganized, messy, and childish.I found no websites that I liked in that horrible list.
    2. I really like ShyLand, it has an amazing design. It gave me a nice base or model for the website I want. Very organized, clear, and neat. I like how it goes from neat at the top to complex towards the bottom. Just like the way it should.
    3. Your site should explain your personality to everyone who visits. It has to look professional and nice. The more time you put into it, the more rewarding the visitor's reaction to your website will be. And that person might just be impressed and thus hire you.

  8. 1. I find that Lings's Cars is very hard to look at. There are words everywhere confusing my mind! Well, i don't know where there are links and where there aren't any. Too many objects moving!
    2. I love Narfstuff because it's look is so simple and cute! It clearly tells you what pages are where, as in which words are linked. That was confusing. The little bear-vampire is sooo cute! it's just very straightforward and looks nice.
    3. My site has to have a professional look with conveying what it need to. It has to be visually nice looking and straight forward, but being detailed and interesting.

  9. 1. Lings Cars was one of those websites that was about as pretty as a sandstone tower in Minecraft. It had no sense of direction, looked clustered and ugly and made me want to throw up. I think it got me more than the others because some of the others looked like they actually wanted to make it look bad. This looked genuine, like it was serious about what it was doing.

    2. Racket.com? While I think this site is not up any more and I couldn't explore it, the home page was very beautifully conducted and it almost had a literary sense to it. I may be cheating but I was so interested in it I actually went looking for it and none of the other websites were as interesting as that home page so I decided on this one.

    3. That I like film and that's what I want to do in life.

2.Ali Felsiki is awesome it is so beautiful I loves it.

3.My website for my use of minecraft says how I got in to the game and how I make maps and mods.

  11. 1. 6. Constellation Seven was one of the worst I've seen. This is because somebody took a tiny picture and had it repeat to make a backround.

    2. http://deborahcavenaugh.com/ their website is really artistic. She used kids art as a border around her website. She also makes the links on her website sea shells which relates back to the border. http://www.sketchin.ch/en/ this website has a video going in the backround that it's a man scrolling through a magazine on a iPad. There website explains what they do which is translates italian magazines from italian to english.
    3. I want my site to say that im a guru when it comes to technology. I want it to also say that I'm a very innovative person.

  12. 1. http://www.arngren.net/ Is the worst I've seen ever there are so many pictures of different items on one page and just looks horrible that way. It is also in a different language and is not comprehendable to anybody.

    2. http://www.meomi.com/ Is a great website due to all of its products and the way the homepage looks, as soon as i saw this site i almost dropped my laptop im writing from it was that good. This website explains what a cloud house and how it works. It is a kid friendly site with many fun and creative games.

    3. I would want my site to look like the previous one I described, to have games and be helpful and to have its fair share of information and comedy. I want my site to portray my love of sports and technology and portray me as a person as well as a technology expert.

  13. 1. The Afterlife, this is just stupid, has no meaning what so ever. Nothing but random crap flying everywhere, how is this even considered a site? I don't know, but all I know is this is terrible.

    2. All these sites were nice, clean and easy to read. I liked http://wherehaveallthewildlingsgone.com/ because Iv'e seen Game of Thrones, but haven't kept up with the last few episodes of season 2, so I guess this site is a fun way to show who belongs to what house and if they are dead or alive in the series so far.

    3. I would like my site show that i'm a professional and a gentlemen in a weird black and red twisted way. And to show what iv'e learned and know in technology.

  14. 1.)I gotta say that the Afterlife does look a bit interesting, but nontheless it is terrible, no real text at all, just one look at it and you are not sure what it could be saying. It is also very disorganized and the guitar in the baby's hands is pointless (he-he).
2.)I believe that Komodo Media is a well put together website. It has plenty of color, design, and creativity. It is easy to find what you are looking for and it is very interesting to look and see what you will find in this website, it even has a random section for random current events.
3.) When people go to my website, the first thing I want to accomplish from them is their interest. I also want them to enjoy being on my website while streaming through what I have done in my time in the genYES program.

  15. 1.)Afterlife was probably the worst website I have ever seen just by the fact that it has absolutely no purpose at all. I mean seriously you go to the page and its just a bunch of animated gifs!

2.)I personally like josh Johnson's site because it is sleek and smooth and easy to navigate. it has lots of work put into it and id love for my website to have as much detail as his.

3.)When people go to my website I want them to see what I'm capable of doing while I'm in the GenYES program. I also want my website to be able to capture someone's interest the second they go to it.

  16. 1. The Lings Cars site seems the worst out of all the sites, because of all the ads and over production of the home page, it needs for pages, that would make the site easier to use and more organized.

    2. Meomi was a creative, organized, easy to use site. It was not over populated with ads or info, in fact the home page was inviting.

    3. Whomever sees my site, I want them to that I have a creative and eager attitude. I want to be their number one got to guy for Tech problems.

(But I still know so little)

  17. 1.)The site Arngren.net was the worst site that I have seen so far, it is very unorganized with the pictures on the site. It is very hard to find anything on that site and is not the best out their.

2.)Jiri Tvrdek has a really good site, he has a awesome design on the site and it gives me good ideas on any future sites. He made it very organized and I can find everything easily.

3.)I want my site to show people what i'm really interested in and how i'm going to get better at that interest. My site should show my skills with my interest and give people an idea on what I would like to do.

  18. 1)The Arngren.net site was terrible. The pictures are all clustered, words spelt wrong, everything in one place and is hard to navigate.

2)13creative.com was a good site, pleasant to look at, descriptive, easy to navigate, and does not have a lot of information crammed together.

3)I want my site to show that I do want to pursue a career in technology and that i can be organized and dedicated.

  19. 1) Ling'sCars.com has to many moving objects. It's disorganized and you are constantly looking around not taking your time taking it all in.

2)deborahcavenaugh.com Is a great website. It's organized, very easy to look at, pleasant to the eyes, and easy to navigate. It personalized specifically to the person and it shouts their name right at you.

    3) I want my website to describe me. I want it to have people know that it's my website without even seeing a single picture of me.

  20. 1)Lings cars is the most annoyingly active website I've ever laid my eyes on. Everything is cluttered together in a way that prohibits you from concentrating on one part of it, and it just ends up confusing the website's vistors.

2)I love the way that Ye Old WebBlog of Bradford Dillon id organized because of his inclusion of archives right next to the current one. I also like the simplicity of design implemented by Chris Spooner in his website, and how open it feels.

3)I want my site to tell people that I am not yet an expert, but I am a proffesional and I am willing to learn.

  21. 1)the after life there was no point what so ever to this website just a bunch of gifs i honstly think it was made buy someone with no friends and nothing to do

2)i liked fieldwork just cause the simplicity of the site not alot of things going on and good graphics

3)I want my web site to be simple yet have everthing i need and that i am not an expert on man tech subjects and that i do not have a specific field of technology

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1)I think that lings Website was the worse by far, The description detailed it as a gag but i don't think it is. What makes it bad is that the website is trying to get people to buy something but the website does not do his company a justice.

    2) Personally i love http://deborahcavenaugh.com/ because she is obviously an artist and she incorporated her own art into the actually display of her website which i think is very unique.

3)I really want my site to be appealing to the eye,and to be able to get my point across in a professional but still personal way.

  23. 1. What I noticed about these websites was that they were really busy, both with onscreen icons and wallpapers. I think some people make their websites look like that to intentionally draw people to them. I actually liked the last one, but only because it was professionally redone.
    2. These award winning websites are very pleasing to the eye. They use creative layouts along with pleasing wallpapers. I think that we could be able to duplicate these with a bit of Photoshop.
    3. I want my website to show that I am very professional and that it is creative in showing my resume.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1) Most of the websites listed had a cluttered feel to them. They used colors of which competed with each other, and there was no cleanliness involved in the making of the sites. The worst offender I would say is Arngren.net due to the fact that it is so visually cluttered that it becomes too much to look like and does not deliver the product in a successful way.

    2) The websites listed under the award-winning category all deliver information in areas that are visually appropriate. They are filled with information, however, separate pages or content boxes isolate different objects. They have a clean feel overall with a cohesive look.

    3) I want my website to show that I am a clean, organized person. I want it to show that I am professional, but allow my personality to leak through as well.

    3) I want my website to show i'm not immature but a professional worker

  28. 1.) The Worlds Worst Website Ever was definitely the worst website I've ever seen. It was definitely not professional. It doesn't really look finished, the background is horrible, and everything is everywhere.

2.)http://blog.pinkandyellow.com/ looks really nice. I think its one of the cleaner better more professional website. I like the layout and everything is clear and easy to read. All together i would say that its a pretty great site.

3.)I want my site to be very professional looking. I think I could make it pop yet still be easy to understand, navigate around, and show that i know what im doing.

  29. 1. Ling's car site was definately the worst site I have ever seen. It hurt just to look at all the ads and try to comprehend the point of the site.

    2. I really enjoyed where have all the wild thing's gone? website mainly because it was clear and concise and pretty cool to navigate.

    3. I would like my site to be simple and informational. Not to the point where its a brain overload but more like and quick fact. Graphics are also pretty important to catch the eye.

  30. 1. Even though it wasn't meant to be serious, The Worlds Worst website is a great example of what not to do when designing a site. Throwing a bunch of things onto one page, isn't always a good thing. Actually, it never is.

    2. I liked the eyegix website. It was clean and simply designed. It has easy navigation, and an overall great format.

    3. I would like my site to show people what I can do. I want to make it so they can get my information without the annoyance of grammar mistakes and distracting designs.

  32. 1. The Ling's Cars site is terrible, way too flashy and in your face. Sometimes you need simplicity and a good form, which is what most sites are doing now a days.

    2. I really liked Chris Spooner's website. It was pleasing to the eyes and VERY easy to navigate, which is always a big green tick-mark in my book!

    3. I want my website to say that I'm fun, energetic, creative, and able to get things done. I want to show that I work well in a pair, so Keith and I have designed our websites to be viewed back-to-back with a very similar art style and layout.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. The Ling cars website was really bad. There was way to much moving on the screen at a time. Also there was no guaranteed safe purchases.

2.I loved the spooner website a lot. I could easily navigate it and my eyes didn't hurt when I looked at the screen.

    3. I would like my site to be very easy to navigate and pleasing to anyone's eyes. Also I would like my site to be very detailed so people would not get confused.

  34. 1: Each and every one of these websites was awful, all for different reasons. I would say that the worst out of them all would have to be the afterlife, seeing as it provides no help and serves absolutely no legitimate purpose.

2: I believe that the website "RedRain" was quite an amazing site because of it's very unique layout. This layout was professional, easy to use, and fun, overall providing this website with a very nice feel.

3: Personally, I would like my website to truly express me as a mature person that would be helpful for technological needs. This would help me come across well to those that are looking for this sort of help, which is what I intend.

  35. 1.) I think the afterlife is an awful website because it keeps flashing, it is at an auto scroll, and all it is is animations. There was nothing i liked about any o the sites.
2.) I like deborahcavenaugh.com because of the design in the background. It is so colorful and with pictures that she most likely drew and put on the website.
3.)I want my site to say how good i am with technology because i would have learned most things about technology and this site will help me in the future.

  36. 1. The top worst website was not organized it hat totally random things and random animations. The adds are in the middle of text.
