All About Google

The fourth QUAD group finished their unit on Google search functions this week.   So for this weeks blog, let's check it out some fun stuff about Google.

Explore the links below.  Then select TWO of the links from 1-5 to report on.  Find something cool that you discovered, perhaps in a sublink or a product or a story, about something you didn't previously know about google, on each site.   Be sure to read other student comments before you.  As always,  if you repeat a comment, you won't receive points for your post.  Have some fun with this.

  1. Google is an amazingly large index that has become a ubiquitous tool applied in everyday life. They have scavenged across just about the entire web database and collected tons of information. An interesting search filter that you can use on websites would be the word finder. By typing [command+f], followed by typing in the desired word/s, you can locate those specific words on the web page. This is extremely useful on websites like Wikipedia that consist of a bunch of information. Another interesting aspect about Google is their working environment. Some employees are allowed to take off an hour of their own work day to relax and think of new exciting ideas. This helps enhance the Google work place and brings out a lot of new innovative ideas.

    2. The first one was something I already knew, but the second fact was found on the life at Google website under job life.
Here's a replacement for the first one though.

      1) I went under the Google Products page and looked at the Google Patent search. Looking up patents for previous inventions can be essential for innovators who strive to make new and improved inventions. Looking through these patents can help them determine if what they're improving will be allowed by law and assist them with designs.

  2. I read about fun Google tricks, and funny google. The link Fun Google Tricks showed me the 109 best tricks in Google, and some fun easter eggs, too. I learned about Google Zerg, a mini Google game where little "o's" attack your search results. Outrageous fun! I also looked at funny google, and it seemed like the perfect google search for a teenage boy looking for funny things.

    1. Also, to get me to over 100 words, I took a gander at Google Green. Google has been using less energy to serve the people of the internet. Fun fact, it takes the same amount of energy to show Youtube continuously for 3 weeks as is does to do one load of laundry!

  3. 1. I choose Google Products as my first link. There are many products of Google I have barely even heard of, it is really surprising! Google pretty much has anything someone might need to do anything on the web, and maybe off he web as well. They even have a place where you can make 3D modeling and go out and write code. I knew that Google had many different things that you could do with it, such as Google Voice and such. I was very surprised to see how many Apps that Google has!

    2. The second link I decided to look at was Fun Google Tricks. Once again I was surprised! I knew Google workers had a very good humor but had no idea that they ent out and did this. Google is awesome!! I had a TON of fun messing with all cool things that I could do. For example, I made Google do a barrel roll for about five hundred times, and had tons of fun trying to get rid of all those o's that attack the links, although I think it's possible to win -.- Also, I love messing with the gravity search!!

  4. 1. My first search is Fun Google Tricks. What I found was "The 109 Best Google Tricks, Easter Eggs, April Fool’s Day Jokes and Pranks" On this site I couldn't understand whats going on but the only
thing I like was the 8-Bit maps of the world.

    2. My second was Funny Google. What I found was a search engine. I really didn't know what to type
so I pressed search and found nothing.

  5. 1.) My first chose was funny google because i thought that it would show funny pitures of what ever you typed in but insted it was just a regulare search engine that looked weird \:

2.) my next chose was google products. What i found was that google owns YouTube! i never knew that! Also google owns blogger. Im glade i chose Google products because i never knew what Google actually owned. I thought they only owned anything that said google in it (google docs) and the search engine. you learn something new every day!

  6. Since I did the Google QUAD Project I learned a bunch of things that I had no idea you could actually do with Google. For an example the first thing I learned and thought was really cool was the filetype search when searching for a certain filetype in Google (PDF,MP4,ZIP ext...) you can put that into a certain search query and it will bring up the filetypes. Never knew this before.

The second on I chose would be when looking for a certain word but you know another word is going to be in your results and you want to tell Google not to look for that word, then you make your search query a certain way and Google will know not to bring it up when it gives you your answer. I thought that this project was pretty cool, and just leaning about Google was awesome in general.

    2. 1) I check out how you can send an e-mail and not be late... I saw on Googles best tricks that you can set a certain time when you want to send an e-mail. Meaning if you wanted to wish someone a happy birthday right at 12:00 AM you could set your e-mail to send it at that time.

      2) I also found out that you can look up the weather in a different state or country and it's pretty acurate actually. I found that it's pretty cool since I travel a lot during the summer and when we have breaks. So, now I can check what the weather is going to be when I get there.

  7. 1. I was unaware that Google had this many locations. They started from a dorm room and a garage but now they have over 70 offices in more than 40 countries. Just simply unbelievable. Also no two offices are the same!

    2. I also looked into Google wallet. I have hurd about it before but I never have seen it or used it. All your credit and debit cards are stored on highly secure Google servers. Use them on your phone or computer. If your phone is equipped with NFC you can pay in-store by tapping the back of your phone to an NFC point of sale terminal at checkout.

  8. 1) i went to "fun Google tricks" which leads to a site that put together almost all of the quirky and fun stuff that Google has done in the past years to mess with people. Most of the ones i have heard before, such as "do a barrel roll" or "what is the answer to life the universe and everything" which for those of you who have seen hitchhikers guide to the galaxy will know that the answer is indeed "42".

    2) I clicked on the Google as a company and found this little tid-bit of information that i have no previous knowledge of "Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University in 1995. By 1996, they had built a search engine (initially called BackRub) that used links to determine the importance of individual webpages."

  9. I clicked on Google Company and found out that there are over 70 google offices in over 40 different countries. I also clicked on All About Google and found out that google has created a web for a better environment by supporting renewable power, so every time you use google, you're helping the environment!

  10. 1. Google funny is probably the biggest waste of programming ever. All it is is the google search engine that allows you to type in a different name that displays itself in place of the colorful google sign.

    2. I also checked out life at google and looked at the video called working at google. That's probably the most amazing looking job ever. Its like an office job but there's weird stuff everywhere and there's not really one boss person you have to listen to. People express their own ideas, and if everyone likes it they do it.

  11. 1. I chose funny google and fun google tricks
    2. On funny Google i didn't learn anything nothing really happened
    3. on fun google tricks i learned that if you plug in an equation into google it will graph it also that you can find kangaroos on street roo

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1. the first thing i clicked on was the google tricks. i didn't realize how many tricks google has and how long they have been doing it.

    2. the second article i read and vid i watched was the google i/o. its really cool not only the look of all the things google comes up with but the wide variety of people.

  13. 1.) I chose "Google Products" as my first link. I saw their wide array of products for your web browser and apps for your smart device as well as their own tablets and other devices. In particular their maps app and service stands out as an excellent GPS and direction service. They also have a medley of other tools and apps to make your browsing experience more pleasant.

2.) I also chose google tricks as my secondary link. I couldn't stop laughing at my all time favorite google trick. If you type chuck norris into your google search bar, and press "I'm Feeling Lucky" it will take you to a page that appears to be a no results found screen but upon further inspection it reveals a series of threats from chuck norris instructing you to "run while you still can".

  14. I chose fun Google triks for the first one. I chose Google street roo to report on. basically Google took kangaroos and attached a three hundered and sixty degree camera to its head and a tracking chip so they can map out the outback.

the other article I chose was an artickle called route to 2025 its an article about what Google expects in 2025. some of the things it expects are payment form moble devices moire customer say so in products and a ll of the products in real time

  15. 1. i went to google company and learned that google was founded 1998 and built a search engin that used linkes to determine the importance of websites. it was initially called back rub.

    2. next i went on about google and learned that googles mission is to organize the worlds information and make it universally accessible and useful. they have tied from the beginning to make the best user experience as posible.

  16. 1.) I clicked funny google, what it is is a site where you can write down what you want the search bar to say. it changes the google logo.

2.) i also clicked the google tricks, it is a site that shows you all the funny easter eggs google has put up on occasion.

  17. 1. I went to Life at Google and clicked on a link called eight pillars of innovation. In the article they talked about having a mission that matters and how failing to do something can actually beneficial to innovation. This is because when you fail you learn something you didn't know whereas when you succeed you don't learn anything new.

    2. Next I clicked on fun google tricks. I found it really interesting that google has a sense of humor. I really liked zerg rush, which caused a bunch of Os to attack your screen and destroy everything on it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The first link I clicked on was the best google tricks and I can't even begin to explain how many different tricks I learned. Googling "zerg rush" was one of the many things that I found cool because it makes it so that O's go all over the screen and its basically a game! There was also a site that you can hear what your pets are saying! I also looked at the funny google, which I can not explain how many minutes I sat there messing with people. It was awesome.

  19. The two pages that I chose were life at google and 113 tricks. In the 113 tricks, the things that I liked the most were the beatbox google translate and elgooG. In the life at google page, I liked the idea about looking to the future instead of what's hot today.

I learned that Gmail began on April fools day in 2004.
    2. I clicked All About Google then went to Google doodles.
Apparently it began at a festal and grew very popular so the
    continued.

  22. 1. The link i clicked on was "Life at Google" and what i learned from it was, people that are interested in software and want to work with computers, usually work at google. Reasons why are, because the people who work there are very very good with computers and they hire the best of the best. People from just graduating college, people who already have had other jobs, and more. They said working with google is fun and everyone always comes up with brilliant ideas.

    2. The other link i clicked on was "Fun with Google", because i've always thought it was interesting discovering new ways and short cuts that you can use on google. It just makes the whole experience with Google so much more fun and i think all the ideas are brilliant, because it draws in more and more people. The snake is my favorite one because you can just press the down or up key on youtube and you will immediatley start playing snake.

  24. 1.) I clicked on "funny google, and when I entered "cats" into the search bar, after a side by side comparison, I got almost the exact same results. So, I think that "funny google" ins't exactly much different from regular google. So, to recap, Google funny isn't That different from regular google.

2.)My second selection was fun tricks with google, where they demonstrated and showed us the many uses and fun little do-dads of google all through out the history of the site google. I learned that when asking google" what is the meaning of the universe, life, and everything" google replies, "42" I also learned, that you can still play pac-man by going to "google.com/pacman" So as a result, there are many fun things you can do with google still today, with more to come in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. For my first selection i picked funny google because like it suggests i thought it would be funny. But to our surprise it seemed almost normal, almost exactly the same as google, but to further examination I noticed a small gray bar on the bottom saying enter new name. So hoping of a surprise I typed in a name and "boom" a new title.
2.For my second topic I chose fun google tricks thinking because i already now a few but thought it would be cool to see how many there were. There were a lot! From cool spinning screens to weird little "pranks" google has pulled on us in the past. My favorite would have to be "binary" if you want to know what it is, Google it!

  26. 1. Funny Google Tricks: This website compiled a load of funny or interesting tricks that you can do with Google Search. The ones I find the most interesting are Zergling Rush, which is based off of the Starcraft game series, where Zerglings are the most basic unit, and they are often used in mass rushes. Another I really enjoyed was the 8-bit Google maps that they did on April Fools' Day. The map was based off of the Legend of Zelda, and the maps were very accurate. I enjoyed the style that they put it in, as I'm a very big fan of retro games and 8-bit art, so the 8-bit maps were a welcome joke for that April Fools'.

    2. Funny Google: Funny Google is the exact same thing as regular Google, except you can change the name of the logo on the website (Example: http://www.funny-google.com/?name=Rustled%20Jimmies). The website is more for novelty, and doesn't have many of the same features of regular Google, as it only has a Web Search function.

  27. First I looked on fun tricks you can do with google. Something I learned you could do was in you type in "elgoog" then your google page goes backwards. It was fun to search things backwards. then of course there are the others like "Google Gravity" and "Google Moms" but I liked something new for a change
    http://elgoog.im/
then i tried the Funny Google and i typed in "hey" then i clicked on a link from the urban dictionary and it gave the funniest and most truthful definition ever: hey means "A contraction for "Hello, I find you attractive and would like to dance with you, share some drinks with you, and then perhaps have sex with you. Nothing serious, of course, and I doubt that this will result in a long term relationship, but I would appeciate you considering my proposal."

  28. 1. I liked the Fun Google Tricks especially the gBall — its a Australian Football got a lot more advanced when Google released the gBall, a computer chip-containing, vibrating football that gives you kicking tips and suggestions as you play.

    2. I think the Google Gulp article= Google Gulp — In an attempt to monopolize the beverage market along with the internet, Google Gulp, the world’s first “smart drink” was unveiled.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1.) Google company it really intrigued me to see who the founders of google were. I never knew they were that young of age, there both 39 and by the names of Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They both went to Stanford university and met in 1996. together they formed the company we know as the leading search engine. The name Google comes from the mathematical word googol which means 1 with a hundred zeroes behind it.

2.) Google products I didn't know how many products google had and by the way it looks they doing pretty well owning dozens of products. Google seems to have a very bright future ahead while even though being one of the leaders in technology still always strive for more inovation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1 I went to life at google and found an article about how they hire, and the type of people they want working at google. It was callee how we hire, and discussed how they look for leadership and teamwork as traits for a great work environment. Google looks for the type of person you are, rather than what your grades and transcripts say. This is to see how you will work creatively, and adapt to whatever situation google puts you in. Google allows freedom, and seems like a great lace to work.

2 I found a fun google trick, which I saw once and forgot about until now. Google changed their homepage to be an interactive snthesizer for Robert Moog's 78th birthday last year. It is awesome to see google take time to create fun pages like this one to honor people who effected our culture, as Robert Moog was a pioneer for music with his extremely widely used invention.

  31. 1. There is several different things google has within the products. Documents, Videos, and google also has Youtube products since they created a partnership.

    2. When there is an event to that certain day, google may create something to their logo to make it go with that certain day.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. The first link I looked at was Fun Google Tricks. What I found was a Google "Product" called TiSP. TiSP is connecting a commode-based TiSP wireless router to the to one of thousands of TiSP Access Nodes via fiber-optic cable strung through your local municipal sewage lines. This made me face palm at google for trying to push the idea of getting wireless internet from the sewage system.

    2. I found out that if you work at google and you are a new parent, google will let you have more time off and some extra money to spend. I think that is a really cool that they give you more money and more time off to spend and take care of their child.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. I clicked on "Fun Google Tricks" and found this thing called Meow Me Now that tracks nearby kittens! I want to go and hug them all! I also found out if you type Chuck Norris on Google it says that you can't find Chuck Norris, he finds you.

    2. I also clicked on " All about Google" and found all the Google doodles. They were really cool. Another thing I found was a video about jobs at Google. On the video there was this really cool robot they made that went around and shook peoples hands and reacted to the environment.

  34. 1. I first clicked on "Life at Google." I eventually navigated to a page that went over the power of speed. It was interesting that they found out that a "400ms delay leads to a 0.44 percent drop in search volume." Just interesting.

    2. The second page I clicked was "Fun Google Tricks". This was so much fun. The best one was when you type "zerg rush" into Google, you have to defend against invading O's which I thought was just fun.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1.The first thing I clicked on was "Google Products". Then I went down and clicked on "Trimble SketchUp". It is a modeling system were you can build anything. There is a lot of great features like making thinks go from 2D to 3D and being able to walk around your creations in a first person view. Also you can paint your different creations.

2.Then the second thing I clicked on was "Google Tricks" then I found out about Zerg Rush. When you Google it your links are attacked and "eaten" by Os you have to shoot them to defend the links.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1.) The first site I went to was the Google Products site. I learned about a google product called Picasa. It is basically a photo editing program created by google. I learned that this program existed, I never knew google had this.
2.) The second site I went to was google tricks. I looked at the section on 14 cool Google search tools. There I found out the is you needed to know the definition of a word all you have to do is type in "define:" and then the word you need to be defined. For example if you needed/wanted to know the defintion of the word animal all you would need to do is type in "define: animal" and it will give you the definition, it will also give you links under the definition of sites you can visit to see more definitions.

  38. 1. My first choice was Google Company. Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University in 1995. They had built a search engine that used links to find certain webpages. They launched Google in 1998 and, ironicly, Gmail on April Fools' Day in 2004.

    2. My second choice was Fun Google Tricks. They have over 100 different Easter eggs, Jokes, and other neat things. I never knew that you could type in Zerg rush, a reference from a game I used to play. It spawns in little Zerglings, but they use little "O"s instead. You can also type "do a barrel roll" and it makes the screen do a flip. Theres April Fool's Day Jokes, such as 8-Bit google maps, where it uses 8-bit graphics similar to the game "Legend of Zelda".

  39. 1. The first link I chose was Google Products. Google provides a service called Code. This service provides resource code and APIs, which function for starter code for languages such as Java.

  41. I clicked on Google Wallet and Panoramio. Google wallet is totally awesome, Google Wallet app supports all your credit and debit cards. Carry them with you on your phone or computer. Shop faster, smarter and safer, in-store and online. That is an app I will check out for sure! The other one I clicked on was Panoramio. Panoramio allows you to Share and explore the world in photos! Panoramio is hands down my favorite app i've seen so far.

  42. 1.) The first link I choose was google products. I thought it was really cool how google was incorporating things like holidays and promos into their title for the day, making an interactive experience for the user. It was also very interesting. They make a regular google search interactive and have a game base which not only is a great marketing technique, but a great way to get people loyal to google.

2_ my second choice talked about the start up of the company, which was interesting. It gave you a sense of the humor that the company has. Like how they launched Google in 1998 and, ironicly, Gmail on April Fools' Day in 2004.

2.My second link choice was that of the Funny Google link. This led me to a google search that the name of which could be changed to anything. I would give it a 3 for not being very useful and also for not being intended to be useful in the first place.
